Xbox One - General Discussion Thread

Looks like we get the Headset Adapter on the 25th. yeah! I got excited for the Headphones they are providing, but they appear to be junk. They are $80 for a STEREO headset (at least it comes with the $25 adapter)

Anyone getting the Headset? I think I may have bashed too soon. apparently "most" of these headphones are Stereo, it's just hte processing that handles the sound in them. I may sell my old TB's X11 and DSS to cut the cord running across my room. I figure I was going to spend $25 for the adapter regardless, and for $55 more I get headphones (which I should be able to sell the others for.

Looks outstanding! On the other hand, the functionality and ease of use are now caught up... to Xbox 360.

Would have bought it if it were wireless.

Twitch streaming will be awesome for an online sports league, like Madden for example. The Championship game can be broadcast and others in the league could watch. Very cool stuff.

i hope the quiality is better then ps4 streaming is on twitch. My guess would be the quality is bad because people streaming are trying to stream with really low upload speeds.

Anyone get Thief for Xbox One? Still tempted to pick up my preorder, but I feel like it might just be better putting the $48 to MGS, and maybe the rest towards Shadows of Mordar.

Not doing well on the review circuit, so it's going waaaay down on the to-get list (as in, probably won't ever get it). Or I'll do like TImbo and give her a whirl when I reactivate GF once a few more titles trickle out.

I MAY give Thief: Deadly Shadows from the original Xbox a go, as it's 360 compatible and sitting on my shelf next to Dreamfall. Am still enjoying Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition on XB1 though - which is hella good.

Debating placing an order at MS Store with the 5% off code from mobile alerts, tax kills it pretty bad for me. Not sure where the tax is coming from either. I've changed the shipping and billing addresses and they both charge tax, the first time to my parents' house in Florida, the tax is $33 and to my address in Hawaii its $25. Bullshit.  Cheapest price shipped to me is $497 from them, might as well just buy it from Amazon. I had high hopes for this 5% code.

for some reason I can't turn off my Xbox with voice command. It understands "Xbox, turn off" but I say yes or no and nothing happens i have to do it with the controller. I did it with the controller once and it seems like since then it won't accept the "yes" command to turn off. Anyone know how to fix this?

Shutting it down completely (holding the power button on the console till it turns off) then restarting usually fixes any glitches I'm having. Give that a try.

Totally disagree. With early adoption this is the risk you run. I know it's only 3 months later, but that's how it goes.

It's a slap in the face if you look at how reactionary this bundle is.

The fact is the Xbone sold well. The only problem is the PS4 is selling much better and we don't even know how much bigger the gap should be since they can't even stock retailer shelves sufficiently.

If they were selling neck and neck or if the Xbone was the only next gen console available, then there would be no reason to have the Titanfall bundle. So in a vacuum, I do perceive it as a slap in the face. They're doing it to keep up with competition while the early lifecycle is so critical to creating an install base. Of course, there's always some inherent risk if you buy day one (no pun intended). However, we are talking a mere 3 months here for a system that actually sold well. It's not the greatest example, but Nintendo's 3DS price drop/ambassador program was at least in response to its poor sales. This isn't an issue of the Xbone not selling. It's because it's in response to how well Sony is doing and therefore early adopters get hosed out of a digital copy of a huge release in the wake of the competition for the home console market.

As a gamer I'd be pissed but as a business analyst it makes a lot of sense. It's the right move and as contradictory as it sounds, I think it's the smart move.

It sold well in 2013. It's sitting on shelves in 2014 so far. Every Target and Best Buy I've been to the past couple months has had them in, and I've only seen PS4s once (and only a couple). At Costco on Saturday they had a pallet full of X1s for $479.99 and no PS4s.

That's why the bundle is happening. The overall sales numbers look good, though still behind PS4. But the fact that stock is sitting on shelves 3 months after launch is never good, and they are desperate to get it moving again and not fall further and further behind as Sony gets more stock out.

The Titanfall bundle is a good move in that sense. It should move more consoles to fence sitters as $500 with the game is more enticing than $560 for both. And they need it to move consoles or they're in some trouble as they don't really have another big time, system-seller type exclusive coming soon. While Sony has Infamous in March and The Order in the fall. Maybe Uncharted 4 depending how far along in development it is (I'd be surprised if that came out this year personally though).

That varies by where you live of course.  Amazon has to charge tax in a bunch of states (any they have any physical presence in).  Mine just started this year as they opened a new warehouse or something in Georgia.

While I generally come down on the side of the PS4, I do have to chime in on the current sales disparity.

While the PS4 is currently selling "better," it is not selling better by a very large margin. It's stolen a bit of the XBox One's momentum, but both systems sold considerably better than anyone expected. Right now is not the time for Microsoft to panic.

The primary reason for panic over a considerable disparity in install base is developer support. It's the situation that happened with the first two playstation systems. Sony was able to run away with the install base for their systems that they were able to insure development by default. That is the kind of situation that Microsoft and Nintendo need to avoid. If developers abandon their platforms in favor of Sony's hardware, the XBox One will whither and die. Nintendo can limp along with their first-party development for a while, but even they won't be raking in the cash like they used to.

The issue is how much of a disparity is necessary. And I would say that the disparity that Sony would need for an advantage like this is far larger than what currently exists. The PS2 tripled the sales of both it's competitors combined. That's a hefty disparity, and one that the development community wouldn't be able to ignore. The current situation between the XBox One and the PS4 doesn't look like that at all. It isn't even trending in that direction. The PS4 has a respectable lead, but by no means is it overwhelming. And anyone with an appreciation for the history of the industry could have easily predicted this current scenario.

Now is not the time for Microsoft to panic. If Titanfall falls flat, that would be the time to panic. But early reports of the game strongly indicate that Titanfall is going to be quite good. It should help give the XBox One hardware sales a second wind going into the summer, as well as give the 360 a popular title in it's waning years. Titanfall will also likely be a long-tail title, and should still be selling fairly strong throughout the rest of 2014, and into 2015 as well.

The PS4 is benefiting from a late Japanese launch and decent enthusiasm in Europe. And the price disparity is hampering the XBox One now that the holiday spending season is over. That's what's happening here.

No one has really discussed the availability of this limited edition bundle. There could only be 100,000 of these made to spark interest in both the xboxone and this new IP but in all likelihood I expect about 1,000,000 of these made and will sell out. If they announce a shortage there will be higher demand.

I do think a big difference this time though is the PS4 and X1 are on nearly identical PC based architecture.  Thus there's really no reason for developers not to toss the X1 a port even if the PS4 ended up with a huge sales lead down the road.

In the past, consoles had very different architectures and ports took more time and resources and thus sometimes it wasn't worth porting PS2 games to Xbox or Gamecube.  Now it's just a matter of optimizing the game to run well on the slightly less powerful X1, so there's just not a reason for third parties to not do the port.  So the only 3rd party exclusives we'll see are ones like Titanfall where Sony or MS buys exclusivity.  Of course, having a bigger install base would make it easier to buy exclusivity for less money since expected sales would be higher on that platform compared to the one with the smaller base.  But I'm not convinced the gap will end up that wide, at least not in the US.

The gap will be that wide in Japan. But anyone who didn't see that coming was kidding themselves. The XBox brand has always been a non-starter in Japan. The Xbox One will just be continuing that legacy.

As you point out, the similarities in architecture only increases the size of the gap that would be necessary. Right now the PS4 is benefiting from this, thanks to it's lower price. When all other factors are equal, the system with the lowest price has an obvious edge.

One of Microsoft's biggest mistakes with the XBox One is that they didn't manage to replicate the 360's Live integration at launch. Many devoted XBox Live users were ready and willing to just get a new console with more power and the same Live experience. Instead they got a system where Microsoft was forced to dial back a lot of the advances that they had made with Live over the course of the 360's run. The Live crowd liked what they had, and Microsoft took some of that away with the XBox One. Simple parity with the 360's Live integration would have convinced a lot more of the 360 crowd to upgrade early. A sizable chunk of that audience will likely wait for a year or two before buying an XBox One. And during that time Sony will have an opportunity to woo them away.

Sony's on-line services may have been less robust with the PS3. But Sony did a better job of making PSN platform-independent. They cut their teeth on this approach with the PSP and Vita, and carried over the concept to the PS4. It's been paying off for them. The experience of transitioning from one to the other has been much smoother. The PS4 feels like a step up in every way.

Lack of backwards compatibility probably hurts both a little too.  I'd have gotten a PS4 at launch if it could play my PS3 games.  As is, with the lack of room and HDMI inputs, a PS3 backlog and really nothing on either next gen platform I really want to play yet, there's just no reason for me to take the plunge.

If there was BC, I'd have jumped in just to sell the PS3 off when it was still at a higher value.

Yeah but I want zero wires.
Do any headsets work like that? I thought they all had to be connected to the controller for chat to work. Isn't that the why the adapter is necessary? I only know of the bluetooth earpiece for 360 that was completely wireless. Unless there are some really expensive headsets that work this way.

only thing i hate about next gen is game installs  :whistle2:(. got theif from gamefly and put it and game has 5 gb update um WHAT. At least the game installs while the update downloads.

Yeah. All I want is the Bluetooth earpiece. It didn't suck IMO.

The xbl update beta is dumb. You can't talk to people that don't have the update. Why would anyone want to use the beta unless all their friends have it?

pretty much anyone that put name in for it got in so why not do it. Plus the same way happend on 360 and tons of people did the dashboard betas on that system. Lets be honest the friends list and party chat is complete garbage till after this update. You can still talk to people in game which most of my friends do in mp games thanks to garbage party chat.

I didn't get into the update preview, but from what i've read they've added:

-dolby digital through optical

-change the number the volume changes when you say 'volume up/down'

-disable hand gestures while watching videos

that's all i've seen so far, anyone know anything else?

I got the beta preview and this blows. I specifically bought PvZ today to play with a friend. I can't even party with him now. Had I known, I would have never did this.

Can I still match make with him even though we can't join a party? I'm not opening the game because it will get returned if this isn't resolved by Saturday.

Yes. It said I could invite friends. Their awful forums won't allow it though. Saying, "group not found" or some dumb shit.

So can I do it with PvZ?

It specifically says you can't access features if your friend isn't also in the program. You're going to return a game because you can't match for 10 days?

xbox has never had wireles headset other then the small blue tooth one which sucked.
There's a headset that isn't Bluetooth. I've had this thing for 4+ years. Still works. Charge it once every few days (or about 7 straight hours in one charge). And never have an issue.

I have the Halo reach one and think it works fine. Better than any other headset I've used.
