Do you guys think my soon to be 4 year old would have problems playing co-op in R&C All 4 One? The only games he's ever put serious time in on are Disney Infinity and LEGO Batman 2. He's pretty good at climbing the buildings to find gold bricks and such in Batman. He's never played the levels, just free roam stuff.
am I the only parent that has no intention of letting my kids play video games? I certainly don't think it's bad that people do, I'm always just a little surprised when I see it. I'm also surprised a 4 year old could hang in R&C anything, makes my nearly 4 year olds seem like incapable buffoons.

I've put alot of thought into it; I certainly don't want him to be the kid that just sits in front of the TV all day. But in the end I figured it would be kinda mean to deprive him of something I thoroughly enjoy myself. He doesn't play every day, and when he does he only gets like an hour on weekdays and usually 2 tops on weekends.

I am still amazed how many of you guys take video game stories seriously. If I am entertained I just dont care if I kill a thousand "bad guys" and the character I am controlling is supposed to have bad feelings about it. I know that its a video game for my enjoyment and if all I did was sneak around not killing people I would be VERY bored.
for me it's an issue of variety - there's a bajillion games where I can unemotionally mow down hundreds of generic thugs/good guys/bad guys/etc. with my spoilered mention, they made a point of the 'first kill' being an emotionally and physically disruptive point for the main character. shortly after you're upgrading that same character with brutal melee kills that involve a fuck ing pick axe. enjoyed the game, but immediately stopped paying attention to the story after that cut scene because come on.

am I the only parent that has no intention of letting my kids play video games? I certainly don't think it's bad that people do, I'm always just a little surprised when I see it. I'm also surprised a 4 year old could hang in R&C anything, makes my nearly 4 year olds seem like incapable buffoons.
why don't you want your kids to share in the things you enjoy?

I don't have kids (yet) but would be fine with them playing video games we've picked out. Movies and TV will similarly need to be curated. Too much out there with crap gender roles and such that we don't want to expose kids to.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it boggles my mind how much a game's story effects your impression of the overall package. I found Uncharted 3 to be disappointing compared to 2, but it had little to do with the story (though, it was definitely weaker). The shooting felt off throughout. Lame desert wondering, hallucinating, and bad guy chasing sections. Plus a good helping of franchise fatigue (for me anyway).  I realize Blabladon brought up these issues, I was more talking about the guy who said he stopped after a few missions because the villains were cliche or something.

I don't know how many times I've heard people say "I don't like GTA 5 because I don't like the characters". Or Gears 3's campaign is awful because of some silly plot developments. Just silly. Meanwhile games like Vanquish and Bayonetta are held in pretty high regard despite having horse shit stories. I really enjoyed all the games I've mentioned up to this point, I just think it's interesting how some get story weighted against them more heavily than others.

And then of course there are games with pretty lackluster gameplay and a decent story that people love. Spec Ops the line comes to mind immediately. What a chore that was to play through. (I know The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite come to mind for a lot of people around here, but I thought both of those were pretty great to play through).

And finally, there are the games with bad stories and bad gameplay that you guys talk a lot about (final fantasy!!!!)

I'm just rambling now.... better get back to work.

Edit: And of course in the time it took me to write that wrenquest expressed pretty much the same sentiments in 1-2 sentences. Jerk.

Exactly, there's good and bad in everything. I see no harm in letting him run around Gotham City as LEGO versions of his favorite superheroes.

My son is 3 1/2 y/o playing the lego movie game with his older sisters helping him. He was awesome at R&C A41 and it was awesome to have all 4 of us shooting at the same enemy mechanic. He popped a trophy on it earlier and yells hey I got a trophy. haha, start them young.

He loves to go camping and play outside and he thinks he is deadpool too with 2 guns and 2 swords and grenades, lol. He is a cool kid.

In some games, story is an important part of the experience or the developers at least put a lot of effort into it. In others, it's just a means of progression to the next part of the game. Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, and Gears of War are part of the former while Bayonetta and Binary Domain are part of the latter group. It doesn't have to be a black and white thing where story is important to everything or nothing.

Yeah I don't let my son play all the time and really only gets to play when he's being rewarded for good behavior or whatnot. When he does play, we'll set a timer for a hour usually and once the timer goes off he is done. He mostly just plays skylanders or toy story 3 toy box mode and still needs my help at times.

I definitely can't be the huge gamer that I am and deprive him from playing any video games. The wife isn't the biggest fan of him playing them but she understands he does enjoy them (obviously) and they really do help with hand/eye coordination. I feel gaming in young children is perfectly fine in moderation.

How'd you like inFamous Second Son?
I just started playing it. Just cleared the first district. It is really a beautiful game, but something just feels a little off for me compared to the first 2 games. Could be that i am not a huge fan of the first power you get compared to electricity. It is enjoyable and, like I said, the graphics are great.

Edit: also, I let me 4 year old daughter play some games with me, but very minimal. She loved costume quest and LEGO Marvel. We are working on the LEGO Movie Game now. I do not play violent games until after she is in bed, in part because I don't want her to be exposed to that yet and also because I want to spend time with her outside of gaming.

I expect different levels of writing/story depending on what game I'm playing.  If a game is meant to be taken seriously but the writing is laughable it ruins the whole feel.  Likewise, if a game that doesn't take itself seriously has spotty writing it's fine because it was to be expected.

In the end, the writing alone doesn't make or break a video game for me but can be a big factor depending on the game.  Recent discussions of Castlevania come to mind...

One of the coolest things about having kids is doing stuff with them and for them that you also find enjoyable. I love playing games with my kids and seeing them play games. Besides, if they weren't playing games they would probably be reading or exercising which is just silly because my kids are dumb and fat and have no use for those things.

I'm no parent and I believe most of us here game since a relatively young age, but I'd much rather encourage my future kids to read, play sports and play games than watch TV. The amount of trash programming (including all ages) is overwhelming.

My daughters been playing since diapers.  It started small (iPad games, running around in a game) and has progressed up til now where she yells BOOOO YAH! at my wife when she blue shells her in Mario Kart.  So we're at the point of teaching good gamesmanship right now.

Which is hard because I want to rub my victory in her face until I realize that beating a kid isn't really something to gloat about :)

At 7, she can do almost all games (hell, gaming and Pokemon almost single-handedly taught her to read) but she still prefers racing (Forza, Mario Kart) and open games like Batman 2, Infinity, or Skylanders.

This started on the right path, then just derailed and depressed the hell out of me.

Yeah, I like games that dont have killing involved too, but for action games where you know going into it that you will be killing thousands of nameless and faceless hordes I dont pay so much attention to the "emotional" parts of the story. We all know the main character is supposed to feel bad, but will go along killing thousands anyway.

Some of us happen to enjoy stealth games. Some of us also aren't homicidal.
I loved stealth games when I was younger. When I had time to play games 10 hours a day. And one of the only reasons I am probably NOT homicidal is because I get to take out my days frustrations in video games. Whenever you see stories of people blaming games for killings, I would like to think many others dont kill because they have other ways to express themselves and get anger out.

our son goes to karate three days a week, plays tee ball twice a week during the summer. We take him swimming pretty much daily in the summers and also go on hikes almost every weekend. He reads with us every night before bedtime and does workbooks every day after lunch. I think we have the important stuff covered.

I agree with tv being one of the worst things for a child, you can definitely spot a kid that has been raised and babysat by a tv.

Why is it so surprising? Most of us are pretty hardcore gamers; it makes sense to me that we would introduce our children to a hobby we love as long as it's not detrimental to their upbringing. Are you worried about it getting out of hand? He's usually limited to only an hour or so a day and goes days without playing at all sometimes.

My son loves to play games with me and we actually played through Puppeteer together. It makes for some great father-son bonding.

Yea, mine plays outside 4-6pm every weekday, Gymnastics/Dance on the weekend, during summer is in a summer camp where she's either swimming, boating, or having water balloon fights nearly every day. We go swimming randomly throughout. Homework comes home on Monday and she's done it by Wednesday. A book read every day (though I cut her a little slack and a comic book counts)

Edit: And as with everyone, her time is controlled. Computer time is limited to an hour, or games, she has control of her iPad for an hour or two a day but she typically netflixes a show (right now she's watching xmen the cartoon). Moderation is the key to being a parent. But yea.. I agree with above... I like gaming so assuming my kid wouldn't be interested is silly.

I never will get why any parent would want to deprive their child of anything they enjoy themselves.  I let my daughter play video games and watch TV but like any responsible parent she doesnt just sit in front of the TV all day long either.  And when she is old enough she will be able to drink adult beverages responsibly if she wants to.  We cant hide shit from our kids.   That always ends badly.

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement.

Videogames will make a nice diversion until he discovers porn on the internet, which he will ultimately spend and waste wayyyyyy more time doing.

They do - in my case, my family (1 wife, 4 kids under 4) is pretty codependent. We do pretty much everything together and we like it that way. My wife has no interest in video games and I'm happy to keep it as something only I do. So, we'll go to the farmer's market together or play with doll houses or work on making lunch or screw around in the garden or go to the park or any/all of these other things that everyone has mentioned. I just don't feel any need to have video games be a part of their life since it's generally tough for everyone to participate and we have relatively little time as it is. Like I said, I don't think there's a single wrong/bad thing about it and I'm glad people enjoy it, it just isn't something we're planning on doing. maybe when they're older my mind will completely change, it just doesn't seem important.

Meanwhile games like Vanquish and Bayonetta are held in pretty high regard despite having horse shit stories.
BLASPHEMER

I think it was Frisky (?) who said it - I gauge it on how much emphasis the developer seems to place on story. Games like tlou, papo y yo, tomb raider, etc seem to push for story so I'll definitely be more aware of the story and I'll naturally weigh it more heavily in my overall opinion of the game. I'm a sucker for doofy ass stories so I'll always enjoy the story side of games like vanquish / binary domain / bayonetta. My problem comes when they try really hard at story and suck at it. And even then if it's fun to play I'll happily still play through it and skip the cut scenes or ignore the story and go to the bathroom during the final credits.

Talking about compelling stories, Yager, the developer of Spec Ops, should try their hand at another original story.

In part I think it's surprising because (like a lot of people around here I assume) growing up video games weren't a parent/child bonding thing. It was something parents tolerated and metered as a rule but they didn't grow up with it so didn't have much interest. I played Mike Tyson's Punch Out every morning of one summer with a friend up in my room, but I don't think my dad would recognize an NES if he read the logo on the front. The other part is just the surprise of finding out what they're capable of playing and with some degree of success at an early age. R&C is a good example since it requires moving around in 3d space, platforming and remembering what a fair number of buttons do - if I don't play it for a while -I- forget the control scheme.

tl;dr not surprise like "I can't believe the ignorance of you jackasses" but surprise like "video games, parents and children have changed a lot in 30 years". It's neat if it's anything.

This explains your position. Four year olds are just at the age where they can begin to get interested in games. Even that is early if they don't have older siblings. Wait until they get older and have an interest in games. Gaming will be hard to resist both because you'll want to enjoy it with them and you'll want them to shut-up.

Also, if you have 4 children all under 4 years old, I don't see how you have any time to game yourself. I'm guessing after having 4 kids you've determined that sex is something smart to avoid, so that must allow for a few minutes of gaming here or there.

Lastly, for those who are tepid on allowing their kids to play games, there is a lot of hidden educational value in many games. My younger kids have a greater desire and interest in recognizing numbers and reading because of the games they are attempting to play. There's also a lot of problem solving and other skills that just naturally work their way in. There are plenty of other examples I could list too. And this is just based on non-educational games. Obviously, educational games would be even more educational.

where the fuck is breakfuss to point out how my dissenting opinion is being cruelly drowned out by the terrible intolerant masses???

oh wait, calm rational discussion.

The kids explain why he is always gaming at 4am.

We limit our kids time with video games. It's also important to let them know exactly when their video game time will be up. If we are unclear on that it doesn't end well. Sometimes I think it would have been best to not have allowed them to play video games until they were adults. ;) But it's too late for that. Some kids don't get into video games that much. Others get completely obsessed with them. Ours lean toward the latter end so we have to put in limits. Then it's fine.

Wasn't saying they were bad. Their devs just didn't put in anywhere near the effort that Naughty Dog or Rockstar does to make them stories worth taking that seriously.
