Wind Waker is the best 3D Zelda game so far* (haven't played Skyward Sword yet so I have to asterisk this in case it managed to topple Wind Waker). The first Zelda is and will always be the best the franchise has ever seen.
Huh? The NES one?? I just started replaying Ocarina of Time on 3DS and I'd have to give it to that one. They just so perfectly realized the previous entries in a 3D environment. They are all brilliant, really. I've been on a Zelda kick lately and am finally making my way through Skyward Sword. Despite some occasional motion control wonkiness, it is also a whole lot of fun (better than Twilight Princess, less than Wind Waker). I also have never played through Majora's Mask despite owning the VC game on Wii. Maybe I'll do that next.

Edit: This has become my new favorite Nintendo thread, by the way.

You might want to consider it, as I've heard it likened to A Link to the Past in terms of fun factor; it's technically a sequel to ALttP, so that makes some sense.

I can't offer personal thoughts on ALBW (yet) as it's still in my backlog.

Pretty sure Link to the Past is the best zelda game and might be the best game I have ever played.
Is that the SNES one? If so I definitely agree with you. I also remember a Gameboy Zelda that was awesome. I do like the older NES titles too though. Never played anything newer than any of these.

Out of curiosity, have either of you played A Link Between Worlds?
Ooops! Forgot that one came out. It's on my list to play too. Can't imagine anything being able to beat the OG though. I need to get on the ball with these.

Yes the NES one. NO TO OOT! God damn thing is the most over rated/over hyped game in the franchise. It's pretty good, but not great. I never really liked it when it released but have since gone back and enjoyed it more. I despised the game when it released because the 2D games were so good there was no need to force the franchise to move to 3D. 2D games will always be better. Always.

As a quick aside the original Legend of Zelda is my favorite game of all time (even better than Chrono Trigger!) so I'll argue its greatness till I'm dead and buried (and probably for weeks after).

You might want to consider it, as I've heard it likened to A Link to the Past in terms of fun factor; it's technically a sequel to ALttP, so that makes some sense.

I can't offer personal thoughts on ALBW (yet) as it's still in my backlog.
I cant unless Sony buys Nintendo or Nintendo gets out of the console biz and starts going multi platform. I stick to one console as I dont have time to play anything else. Besides, no trophies remember? I havent played a Zelda or Nintendo game in YEARS.

Zelda totally jumped the shark with those friendly talking rolling rock monsters.

Is that the SNES one? If so I definitely agree with you. I also remember a Gameboy Zelda that was awesome. I do like the older NES titles too though. Never played anything newer than any of these.
You might be thinking of Link's Awakening (GB), Link's Awakening DX (GBC), Oracle of Ages/Seasons (GBC), or Minish Cap (GBA) when you say "Gameboy Zelda". I remember enjoying the latter three when I played them.

Ah, right. My mistake.

The problem he has is those are all excellent games so he could easily be talking about any of them. Too bad the DS ones weren't as good.

Really? Yeah...I guess the games just won't work without the OLED.
Lol, dug deep for that one eh?

Definitely Link's Awakening then, it was original GB. I had a GB Color but honestly can't remember playing anything memorable on it.

Agreed. I was never a fan of the stylus-centric method of movement in Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, so I welcome ALBW's more classic analog-stick approach.

Wind Waker is the best 3D Zelda game so far* (haven't played Skyward Sword yet so I have to asterisk this in case it managed to topple Wind Waker). The first Zelda is and will always be the best the franchise has ever seen.

I respectfully disagree with you.

I played a few hours of it and it is really good. It actually feels really similar to ALTTP at first since it is uses the same map and you progress through the first couple of dungeons in the same order (obviously the actual dungeons are really different) . I really need to start playing it again I just spend very little time doing handheld gaming.

I think it largely comes down to what age you were when you played it. I had no nostalgia for the original since I think it came out the year I was born (just looked, one year before I was born). So I was 11 when OoT dropped and it was just magical. Just a huge game world to explore.. Z targeting combat.. super clever dungeon puzzles. Good stuff.

I respectfully disagree with you.
Which one(s) is/are better? I'd really like to know. I've played OoT, MM (never finished) and a small bit of Twilight but none of them seemed as good and Zelda-y to me.

edit: oh right, I remember those blog posts

edit 2: someday you and I will come to vicious blows over this disagreement

I know I'm in the minority on this. It's okay. Everyone I know is under the misconception that OoT is the best Zelda. I forgive their sins for it and I will forgive yours as well. :grouphug:
I do agree that OoT seems overhyped. I did not like it that much when I played it back in the day. It was just an okay game to me. Part of that probably had to do with me starting college and getting into "the real world". I didnt have much time to sit and play games. Too busy getting shit faced and failing my first year in college... ah those were the days.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. The first Zelda you play is usually your favorite. Goes for most franchises I suspect actually.

My younger brother is a big LttP fan though and I introduced him to the franchise during the NES era. He may have been too young at the time to remember it, given he was just a few years old at that point. I've literally been playing games since I was in diapers. My first console was the Intellevision and I was born in 1983. We had an NES in 1986 so I had to have been playing the Intellevision when I was about 2. I still remember those days and how much I miss the Intellevision. It's still on my rebuy list along with the handful of games I remember. I can always play one of the re-releases they put out in the last few years, though anyone who has played on the original system will tell you the re-releases don't play the same because they can't. The controller was just too different from anything made today.

Sunshine and Wind Waker were both excellent but I wouldn't put either of them near the top of those series' all-time greats.

Sunshine was probably the hardest Mario game I've ever played though.
I "completed" every Mario game up to Galaxy. Got every star, beat every level, every secret and Sunshine was the most fulfilling to me. After that Super Mario World, then Mario 64.

After that Nintendo may as well have been dead as far as I was concerned.

No love for the NES Marios?? Mario 3 is one of the best games ever made. I could see an excellent debate between Mario 3, SMW and SM64 as to which is the superior game though. Any of the three could be argued as the best in the franchise.

I find this true most of the time as well, and is generally why I prefer the original game in a series more than the sequels (like Arkham Asylum and Bioshock for example). Not true with me and Zelda though. I played the shit out of the original and LttP before the release of the 64.

I think I 100% the first Galaxy, but I didn't 100% Sunshine because, like I said, it was actually really challenging. (Obviously 100%'d every Mario before that because there weren't a million games to play back then).

I think there were tons of blue coins scattered throughout the levels on Sunshine and those are the only things I didn't bother with.

OoT followed by Links Awakening, preferably DX version then LttP. Never cared for any of the others, from just meh on some to couldn't stomach others. I haven't played Twilight Princess yet though and I feel as though I would like that one a lot more than most.

OoT ranks highly for me because of all the kick ass music. That's good shit right there. I somewhat regularly nerd out with a 10-minute-plus metal medley of the songs.

Nerd metal!

RELEVANT!

This is the first I've seen of the Wii U version's box art, and it looks quite good. Did anyone else notice how the titles for both versions have the hidden "4" in pronouncing the word "for", since this is the fourth Super Smash Bros.?

"Super Smash Bros. for Wii U" = Super Smash Bros. 4: Wii U

"Super Smash Bros. for 3DS" = Super Smash Bros. 4: 3DS

TP is arguably the worst in the franchise. It's not bad, just soo boring. One of the few I haven't finished. I got maybe half way through it before I said to myself, 'Why are you playing this if you don't like it?' and I never went back. Liked the graphics, but the game was just dull as dirt for whatever reason. The concept was neat, maybe the execution was the issue. Really a rare miss for the franchise.

Did you play the GC or Wii version of TP? It probably doesn't matter much, but my brother (who watched me play the Wii version and started the GC version himself) said that the GC version felt better.

Isn't that a bit redundant? I mean it does say Wii U at the top of the case.

Pretty sure I played the Wii version and kept the GCN version sealed. Will have to check my library when I get home tonight.

If that's true you definitely made the right call. And since you did, I will happily give you 20 dollars American for your sealed GCN version! Act soon, this once in a lifetime opportunity could end at any time!

EDIT: Yes, got in right between crunchewy's double-post.
