I used to like them but either I got old and started to suck or they got harder. Or both.

It also doesn't help that I have a couple of thousand other games to play instead of just that one like in the old days. When you know that's the only game you're going to get for some time you kind of get good at it by default instead of saying fuck this and moving on to something else.
Yeah, maybe this is my nostalgia/rose glasses/bad memory talking, but I seem to remember platformers back in the day requiring a lot of memorization, which is fine when you're a kid with endless time and you get two games a year, but who has the patience for it now...then again I always did suck at them regardless, so there you go.

You guys wanna know what I fakeybroed in the last week?

Mount Your Friends

Darkwood

Top Hat

Proxy Blade Zero

Vertical Drop Heroes HD

OlliOlli

Toxic Bunny HD

Shantae

My Ex Boyfriend

Monochroma

Escape Goat 2

I Shall Remain

Frozen State

and some desura/drm free games too.
I like this guy.

Just read up on ship strategy for FTL and apparently the Kruos works best as a boarding ship, which I haven't tried.  Also, apparently the new flak weapons are the shizz.  Going to go give those a run now.

I was never great at platformers.  I think the only ones I ever completed were the original Sonic for the Genesis and Smurfs on the Colecovision :D

Then again, I didn't own a Nintendo for the whole Mario thing and instead played stuff on the Commodore 64 so I had a lot of non-platformer options available to me.  Plus the benefit of pirating games off BBS's direct distribution so when a game was annoyingly difficult I could pick something else.

I could never get used to how much Sonic floats. I've beaten Sonic 3D Blast, the 2.5D isometric game ported to PC in the late 90's, but I was never able to beat the originals. Mario games are a lot easier, in my opinion, because of the tighter controls and ability to see more of the screen. Low resolution + speed = me losing all my rings real quick and not getting the Chaos Emerald.

You'd love the Android ports then.

Actually I played over half of Sonic Lost World on the Wii U...sure he's slower, but I still get a sense of speed while feeling like I have more control over Sonic. So far it's better than the press said it is IMO.

On topic: Is Transistor any good? I played the Bastion demo and I didn't get the rave about it, especially the music.

Same here. I like the idea of the Sonic games a lot, but not being able to see what I'm about to spin into always bugged me. There's no time to plan your next move. With Mario, you could, within reason, since you still had to beat the timer (I'm looking at you, Level 8).

I just saw the red letter media guys discussing sonic this weekend.

I only remember playing a little of sonic at demo setups in stores. Nobody I knew owned a genesis. I remember not liking it at all. Definitely not as good as super mario bros. But I'm not a platformer expert. My last console was an atari 2600.

*sniffle* Leave Sonic alooooone! lol.

Yeah the first Sonic game is quite overrated. Have you seen Sonic fans on sites like Sonic Stadium? If you want to keep your sanity...well...yeah just stick to this forum.

Yes, though I also loved Bastion so I can't say how someone that didn't care for it would feel about Transistor.

->Review<-
Don't get me wrong, what I played was very good; more polished than several AAA games (Ace Combat: AH, Star Trek)...

Maybe the demo wasn't long enough.

When it's on sale again I'll give it another shot. First I need to get all my other games out of the way. Gotta love the backlog.

Oh my god, FTL Advanced Edition on Normal is so hard!!!!! I made it to Sector 8 and the second boss fight on my second run and I think that was a fluke, as I haven't made it past Sector 6 in many subsequent attempts. I think the problem is the AE added so many new options and made certain of the old ones less of a win button (drones are much more vulnerable, hacking messes up everything), so it's very hard to be equipped to deal with everything well. And once you start eating damage your ship can go down fast. Anybody got any pointers?

Prior to FTL I was playing Orcs Must Die for the first time and enjoying it quite a bit until I had to start playing the levels on the easy difficulty setting to unlock the weapons and going back on normal to 5-skull them. Got tedious, feeling like I had to use the same setup on every level. Is it better in the sequel?
ur fualt cyrus u made me play it

The only productive thing I ever did with my ColecoVision Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle was to do the topless Smurfette glitch. I got it for a present when I was 13 and it was the best thing about the game.

I linked my Facebook account and it said it didn't "pass their spam filters". I'm guessing because it's a 'fake' account without a bunch of friends, posts, etc. Nothing for them to data harvest so they don't feel like rewarding me for giving them nothin'.

Weird. I think Sonic 1 (and 2 & 3) are actually fairly easy games once you learn the mechanics of the different levels. I've even beaten them using my laptop keyboard.

Speed is really the thing that set Sonic apart. It was a great showcase for the Genesis (much better than the earlier Altered Beast pack-in).

I guess I was an innocent child who did not know about the seedy side of Smurfette and Colecovision.

And on that note *downloads ROM*

Yes, and the difference is what people don't often see. Not everyone gets to zip around the levels like a badass... you have to earn that! You still have to memorize stuff as most other platformers require, but you have to do it quickly. Doing it correctly lets you skip past a good portion of many levels, so it's also kind of an incentive.

I grew up playing Mario games on Nintendo. Super Mario World is one of the best games of all time, and going from that to playing Sonic & Knuckles and the like left me dissatisfied with the series. It's just the way Sonic is controlled, I guess, since every incarnation of the series has him floating around on his stick legs and ridiculous pterodactylism. Sonic Heroes and Adventure DX made it hard to predict where his wireframe model actually was because it's so misshapen.

My favorite Sonic games are the Transformed racing series, because, well, they don't actually have you controlling that awful character. ;)

Well a laptop keyboard...Not much different from the Genesis pad if you think about it. I remember playing the Mega Collection on PS2 and I HAD to use the D-pad. The Analog sticks always screwed me up for some reason.

I have a long story on why I love speed but if I told that, all you CAGs would be fast asleep pretty quickly.

Wish I could do some of those speed runs I've seen on Youtube but I always get killed. Just a little to slooooow...

If anyone is interested, I just beat FTL: AE normal on my last runthrough, but honestly I'm not sure if my strategy made a huge difference. It had been my plan to get a teleporter ASAP, but right after I did I accidentally lost one of my Lanius guys when I didn't notice that he died while the clone bay was offline. So teleporting wasn't a ton of use to me the rest of the game, as I couldn't find a replacement. I did try out the flak cannon and it was as good as they say, but then I also had some very nice weapon drops early on in the game which made me quite a terror by sector 4 or 5 or so. In fact, all the pirates in the nebula were giving me a ton of scrap to leave them alone, which I've never seen before. I ended up collecting an excess of scrap without a teleport strategy OR the recovery device and had my systems maxed by the last sector, making the final fight pretty easy. Not sure how much was strategy and how much was luck, honestly.

Have you seen Sonic fans on sites like Sonic Stadium?
No, I haven't. What on earth does one say about the original Sonic on a fan forum?

Man, remember that one time when Sonic spun real fast and went through that loop-de-loop and grabbed those rings before slamming into a robot? Dude was always doing crazy shit like that. Classic Sonic, man. Just classic fuckin' Sonic...

....Something like that...when they're not mass-debating whether 2D, 3D, parkour, or even an AK-47 is better...

I fucking loved Sonic comics as a kid. I don't care what anyone says, they were awesome.

And Sonic 1 was a bit weak simply because you couldn't charge up. The rest of the 2D ones are great, and anyone who says otherwise is wrong and should fall in a spike pit with no rings.

I've been playing Dead Island again (pf rewards) and must say it is not as bad as I remembered it.

The main problem I'm finding (besides sides that sound glitch) is that missions are somewhat shallow. Also the world is huge and there's no way to travel it fast (until now at least) and there are no marks on the map unless you select a mission.

Besides all that, I'm having fun with it. Weapons are good, sounds are great, enemies are well made and you get to kick Zombies with high heels.
Dead Island series plays like first-person melee-based ARPG.

Basically, an inverted Borderlands 1 w/ zombies.

Questing is just another way to run around, explore the game world, kill enemies, get more material, and obtain more killer loot.

EDIT:

Of course, the original DI's backwards trailer would lead you to believe it's an emotional story-based zombie-killing game - which the game, for the most part, certainly is not.

Not sure if it was intentional, but you just reminded me Need for Speed: Underground, for which I thank you (come on EA, give me a digital release already).

Oh, I certainly would love a re-release of NFS: UG1+2 on the PC, since I missed out on those.

And they better make sure they have the soundtrack licenses still active, as well.

And if not - renew 'em!

Funny how the writer mentioned consumerism (almost like a dirty word)...what are we doing here on CAG anyway? Looking for stuff to buy, 70% of the time. The rest is either bragging or arguing?

Sonic 3 and K are still in my backlog. Did beat 1 and 2 and loved them...except for 2's special stages.
