Official NHL Not 15 (14) Discussion/CAG Team Thread - Headsets On Pants Off! New Team!

I hope Bishop is the same way with his surgery Nate. It sounded like a staph infection for Rinnie though.

Also, Ha Ha Matt.

Also....hell yeah to free!! http://store.steampowered.com/app/312990/

Um, aren't these exactly the same as 14? http://www.xboxachievements.com/game/nhl-15/achievements/
Typical lazy achievement list from EA...

I am guessing that achievement list is for last gen and the Xbox One version will have different achievements.
Hope so, but 360/XB1 Madden 25 had the same list so I can see them doing the same with NHL since it is the first release of this gen. Also Madden 15 list is same as Madden 25, at least for 360.

Cool! Nice find, Gary!

That looks awesome. Does not show up as free for me, though.
It's a litlte confusing because the game it's based on "Broforce" is not free. But Expendabros appears to be some type of promotional game with some Expendables references...and that just says "play now". It also says it only has local co-op though.

I am guessing that achievement list is for last gen and the Xbox One version will have different achievements.
I hope so. Is it just me, or does it seem like developers are barely making a damn effort with next gen? I get that it wasn't supposed to be as big of a leap as Xbox -> Xbox 360 was...but sometimes I feel like there's no difference at all. The servers for UFC suck absolute balls (as I've heard the servers for MLB The Show on PS4 do as well). You still get body parts that clip through each other or inexplicably don't make contact. The dashboard on the One is disorganized and slow as hell (sometimes I don't even check my messages because it feels like it takes 10 years to navigate to them, lol).

Sure, there are more bells and whistles, but the system doesn't feel a whole lot smarter. And that bothers me. In a lot of ways, they just seem like new platforms for these "AAA developers" to keep doing what they were doing. Maybe it's just "first year console" problems. But it's disappointing that more progress hasn't been made.

I already cold boot. I turned off the "Xbox On" feature several weeks ago because yeah, it's not optimized very well and ends up clogging system resources. The dash is still slow though. Just too many steps between getting to what you want to get to. The fact that messages loads up an entirely separate "app" (which kills off game audio) really bothers me.

Maybe it's not so much that it's slow as just there are a lot of steps. My example would be trying to check/send a message during a loading screen or while in a lobby countdown. It just takes way too long to get to it...and by the time I do, I can't hear if my game has loaded or when I need to back out anyway. And you can't snap messages either. It just feels poorly designed.

These just seem like common sense features for something that wants to call itself "next gen". I get that it's built around Windows 8, but it's never bothered me on PC the way it does on the One. Just a lot that feels cluttered and unintuitive.

Duh, Alan. Jets carry blood diamonds.

I do like how almost the entire world hates the Bruins though.

Also, I've never seen this guy's channel before, but this commentary is fantastic.

Usually if I have to check my messages I go right through the app. Also, there is a setting for the snapped app where you can Control which app is louder. I always set it so my main app is louder than the snapped one. I also usually hot the guide button twice to switch to the regular app when I have something snapped so that way I'm not navigating the snapped app like a fool. Just takes some getting use too is all. The preview build is a lot faster for the guides at least and snapping.

I feel they built it around the smart glass. I like it as I do t have to turn the controller on all the time to do something. I use an extra android phone I had that works great with it.

Looks like round 2 of Rift DK2 shipments is now happening. Seems like they're doing smaller batches simultaneously for each region of the world so nobody just gets completely shafted. They said there were something like 12,000 Rifts ordered in the first 36 hours. So, I think they're just now eeking past that. Reports indicate they're up to about midday 3/22 for US orders and as late as 3/27 for Asia.

The bitching is still hilarious. "When Oculus took my money, they entered into an agreement to provide the product by a certain date!" I so can't wait for the follow-up "I can't get my DK2 to work properly! This is unacceptable!" posts.

Hopefully whatever hold up there was this time is over and done with and batches will ship more regularly now (rumors included: further updating the SDK for easier implementation and not wanting a larger audience of complainers in the meantime, new micro fiber cloths because the old ones were reportedly scratching lenses, new scratch resistent coating on the lenses, etc). I'm in between the US and Asian orders at 3/26.

You can't snap messages though can you? (or are you talking about the messages app through Smartglass? ...too many apps, lol). I'm pretty sure I tried to and it said "Cannot snap messages"

The volume problem was when I was looking at my messages in full screen. If that could be changed, that would be great. Even on 360 I use that as my cue to get back to the game. On hockey nights, I'll be looking through the dash and/or responding to hate mail, and then I'll hear Gary Thorne start yelling about something and be like "Oh shit! Time to play!" lol. I couldn't believe going into messages just muted my game audio on the One.

Hell, I'm going to go look right now and see if I can figure this out, haha. Smartglass is great and all, but when I'm already playing a game with a controller, I don't want to have to put that controller down and use a phone/tablet. If that's what they were after, they should have gone gamepad like Nintendo.

EDIT - Yeah, you can't snap messages. Best you can do is pin it to your home screen...but you have to "minimize" the game to get to it...which kills game audio. Kind of lame...but I guess checking messages from another device is an option. It just doesn't make the messaging area on the system itself seem very integrated. You can snap achievements and activity, but not messages. Makes no sense.

I saw that Alan already added this to his wishlist on Steam, but holy crap. This game looks amazing. The developer has already promised Rift support is coming too. I'm almost considering paying the launch price for this. It just seems fantastic.

This is also now on Steam. 0:30 for the best voice acting ever.

Seriously, no sexual jokes? I don't even know who you guys are anymore.

I'm getting out of touch, too much professionalism that I have to put forth at work :(

All right, couldn't resist on Mind: Path to Thalamus. Found a Steam reseller offering it for $8. Too good to pass up. :)
I might have to dig into the reseller threads I guess. I skimmed a Lets Play, and the puzzles seem really cool.

Yeah..it's a great resource to have. And considering the games are gifted directly to your account, you know it's on the up and up. Like I've always said, if Steam has a problem with it they should remove international gifting. I've done business with several people through steamtrades.com too.

It's kind of funny, I actually created a group on my Steam friends with all the resellers. It's like my "dealers" list, haha. I noticed one of them was on this morning, so I just asked him if he had a price on the game. He told me $8 paypal or 4 TF2 keys. Considering TF2 keys are like $2.50 each...paypal was a much nicer option. I can give you his info if you want.

As for the game itself, I played it for about an hour and it's really cool. It's like Dear Esther, Alan Wake, Kairo, and Dream combined, lol. Lots of cool elements to it. And it was very easy to get working in the Rift. It has mouse look and none of the game files are encrypted, so I was easily able to change the FOV. Then, it was just a matter of tweaking settings in Tridef...but after that, you could almost mistake it for native support. The 3D looked really good too.

LMAO...this was posted in the Rust community update this week. So damn funny. Outdouching a douche.

Wow, the Rooster Teeth guys just posted another 7 days lets play and they found some interesting things.  It's a long video but pretty funny.  They ended up in two groups and one group ended up finding a decent building that might hold promise.  The other group tried to hole up in houses at one of the main cities and didn't do so well.  Last 15 mins is the best of it if you don't want to watch the whole video.

LOL...wow. That was crazy. Once again, freaking 7 Days To Die has some of the most realistic gameplay. I mean, maybe not 100% realistic in its execution (dog wrecking the ceiling). But just the stuff that you'd think "man, it would be cool if they could..." and most of the time they can, haha.

It's almost like the game is ready to outthink you. Dig a trench around your base...zombies come from underground. Wall off one house and build a rock bridge to get to your safehouse next door...zombies tear the house down. How in the hell do you not die in that game? lol

In other news, apparently Live For Speed is incredible with the DK2.

Damn...I can't believe this didn't even reach 25% of its kickstarter goal (though I didn't know about it till now either). This is a much more practical next step for VR immersion than treadmills or full body tracking.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTyldwT2isY

I had a similar idea several years ago for movies. Basically fans and transducers creating the 4D effect you get in fancy theaters. But once I got into the coding side of it, it went way the hell over my head. The idea was affordable D-box...without motion. Someone will make a fortune off it, I'm sure, haha.

Guess 7 Days might be our Saturday game lol.

I'm kind of meh about the fan. Considering that the Oculus is covering a majority of your face, I don't think it would have as dramatic effect as a D-Box system would. Also, the video  doesnt really help garner interest anyway IMO; it doesnt really demonstrate any real world application, just parts and development.

Yeah, Alan...but you can take your clothes off. Duh, lol. Those are fair points though. I will say, having a fan on in general does add to immersion. I put a small desk fan on my racing rig to add to driving/rollercoaster experiences. Of course, it just blows constantly (quick, where's Matt with a joke? haha), so you're not getting the differentiation. But I guess you could just get a rotating fan to at least change it up a little bit.

What was a little vague was how far along they actually are with its implementation in Unity/Unreal in terms of getting bursts of wind at the right moments. I know with the motion simulator stuff, the engines actually output a crazy amount of data for different vectors and axis. It gets pretty crazy with all that stuff running at the same time.

Wow, so after Madden releases. Hmm...I wonder if that was intentional because they don't want their initial numbers to look bad from people who only signed up for Madden/NHL and then cancel the next month, haha.

Also, free game for everyone to try. It's really easy. I promise. :)

I'm not saying the Rust devs aren't working hard, but "Johnny made a box" by comparison seems kind of silly. It makes you wonder if they're learning how to code at the same time, haha.

Any of you guys in the EA Access beta? If so do you get invites?
Apparently, the codes are automatically sent via XBL message. I got my Xbox preview approval Monday night and received the latest update Wednesday, but still no EA Access invite. I want it now!

Since D-Box was mentioned: how many of you have tried it? It seems to be fairly prevalent in theaters these days. When I tried a demo of the tech at the Chinese Theater in LA back around 2010, only 16 theaters in all of North America had D-Box capabilities. That number must be exponentially higher now.

The only full film I've seen in D-Box has been Tron: Legacy. The motion plus the 3D was a thrilling combination, even though Tron didn't make the greatest use of 3D. Many Blu-ray discs these days have D-Box code. Hell, even older releases like the X-Men films and a couple seasons of Lost (!) have it. Can't wait til I can afford a D-Box chair to pair with my 3D TV. I can only imagine it working in tandem with the Rift...

I'm not sure that I see D-Box really becoming more affordable (not without a low end competitor stepping in anyway). It's a very high end niche component that not many people would probably see a need for. Similarly, motion seats for PC games cost thousands of dollars as well. A recliner on hydraulics is probably not going to be commonplace in living rooms across America, haha. What you can do for under $60 though is easily add rumble to your seat without disturbing the entire neighborhood with loud bass.

Buy a couple of these

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009RGJ47S/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and an amp to power them (I got this one and it's worked very well...allowing me to adjust the strength of each transducer separately)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0070Z87YO/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1

attach the transducers to your seat (I've heard of people screwing them into couch frames even), and connect the amp to the subwoofer output on your PC or receiver. Makes for a much more entertaining experience...and not a bad massage chair either, haha. :)

Nate, do you have Dr. Pizza as a Facebook friend?

I know it's probably just the sun causing him to squint, but that dude looks very stoned.

I thought about adding him, but then I don't want him commenting or posting anything on my page pretty much ever, lol (I present his Twitter page as exhibit A, lol. https://twitter.com/AllanCaesarIII). And I don't think you can do that without setting up your page to have to approve everything that anybody posts...which would be a pain in the ass.

In other news, if Gary's on tonight, Damned? And if he's not, 7 Days To Die?

Yeah, Alan...so after you left last night, some things happened, lol. Fortunately, I had Shadowplay at the ready. Also, I created a new Youtube channel. I've been considering making some Rift "how to" videos since there's basically nobody on Youtube doing that. Everybody is like "Hey, look how awesome this is!" but nobody really shows how to get things working properly...or how to get non-native Rift games working.

But anyway, if we actually wanted to turn this into a thing, we could change the name or whatever. But for now, it can just be a place to upload our random videos. I can PM you guys the login info if you want.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eaXf_TVmYk

Things start to take a turn for the worse around 7:00....as the sun goes down.

I wish I had a good enough computer to play with you guys. At least most of us have Xbox One now.
Yeah, the One will be good for sports games. But I just don't see it ever having games like 7DTD. Just a different audience. And for me, it's almost like a "once you go PC, you never go back" thing, haha. My Xbox One will serve its purpose, but the freedom playing stuff on Steam has given me is crazy.

Want to rebind your controls? No problem. Want to use a controller in games that don't natively support one? Yeah, we can do that. Want to add mods? Go ahead. Want additional story content? Create it yourself. I honestly think I'm just drunk with the power at this point, lol.

Case in point. I don't even use a gaming mouse, but this type of stuff is going on:

http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/08/06/roccat-nyth-mmo-mouse-supports-3d-printed-buttons-in-a-fully-modular-grid/

Yeah, but we've already been over my computer situation. It's still going to be a while before I can afford a new one, because when I buy a new one, I will invest in one good enough to run all those modern games.

Looks like that old external drive I was using must be dying because the videos I have from last night don't seems to have saved properly.  They are saved but look to be corrupted files.  I have a flash drive I am going to try next time to see if that works any better.
