A role-playing game (RPG and sometimes roleplaying game) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting.

Sounds like Zelda to me.

In my irrational definition, if you don't have a party of characters, then it's not an RPG (which I consider a shortening of the prototype "J-RPG").

While that is the definition of role-playing game, someone should make a video-game version of the definition. Because the above describes every video game ever made.

Problem solved, every game is an RPG.

On a more serious note, even though Zelda is an action adventure it still feels like an rpg. You gain weapons to gain abilites and reach places you couldn't before, collect money or rubies and buy shit, you open chests with crap in them, you talk to villagers, you have to go place to place etc. Shit Zelda 2 even had a leveling system (I know it's the black sheep but if you haven't played it you really should, it's amazing game and might be my favorite Zelda).  Doesn't seem too far off from most modern RPGs. Not to mention back in the day we didn't have all this overly complex distinction of games. I mean we had like Final Fantasy and Zelda. Is it FF or Chrono Trigger? No but to me it's rpg-ish.

evil within ch 10 boss, how i beat without any upgrades

2 freeze bolts, like 3 sniper shots, and some shotgun rounds to the face. that's all it took. Right when it starts freeze the boss and snipe out the eye and his 2 heads, usually that should be enough to start the 2nd phase, if not unload some random sniper shots, but the eye and heads should pop instantly when it is frozen. then just freeze it again and unload after it changes and shoot the purple mouth with a bunch of shotgun shells. just be careful not to stand too close or it will 1 hit eat ya. and on my speed run i was able to knock out ch13,14,15 in an hour. apartments, subway and asylum again. if you have magnum just save it for the bosses/fake ruviks. 2 sniper shots or 2 explosive bolts will take out safe head. yup

So by this rationale, the God of War games are all RPGs.

Almost every game has RPG-elements of some kind, like backlog said.  People are welcome to think Zelda games are RPG's, that's just fine.  Like stotch said, I'm welcome to think that people who think the Zelda games are RPG's are retarded, that's just fine too.

Any further discussion on this topic is unnecessary because there's no cut-and-dry answer.

I just don't really see what is so different from Zelda and a game like Oblivion which I'm sure most would automatically say is an RPG. If they all say action adventure than I'm 100% wrong. I agree though no cut and dry answer.

And yeah, Zelda 2 is an rpg IMO. I'd never call any of the others an rpg though.
It's also the best game in the series. :D/

And yeah the RPG concept has gotten pretty diluted. RPG used to refer to stuff like FF, DQ/DW, and the like. There's nothing definitive you could point to as a differentiator between RPGs and non-RPGs nowadays, except for perhaps the depth of dialogue.

Yeah, I didn't mean to start the debate of the decade here. Just needed help making a decision.

To me, the things that usually make a rpg are some sort of class/build structure and character development. Plenty of games have rpg elements like leveling up, etc, but do not have the choice of class/build.

Oblivion has statistics with numbers (Strength, Defense, Magic, etc.). Zelda (excluding Zelda 2) does not. Simple.

It's also the best game in the series. :D/
This explains a lot.

When I think RPGs, I think turn-based shit. But that's probably because I'm old. I found it weird people labeled Mass Effect one after I played it for the first time. Everything else, from the leveling and equip and missions is straight RPG shit, sure. But no turn-based shit made it a 3rd person shooter with elements to me.

Apparently preview builds of Lords of the Fallen haven't been favorably received, so the developer responded:

Nope. I first ran into Rancid in the late 90s. I'd never heard of Operation Ivy before it was listed in the thread.
Even though they only released 1 album it's a gem in the Ska Punk scene. They released some bootleg/live albums which I have on CD. The album Energy is great from start to finish. I can't believe the magic only lasted 2 years.

Maybe we can change the discussion to helping me figure out if a thing in the Ps store is DLC or not. I mean I looked all over the top half of the initial page and didn't see anything. I don't have time to read where the descriptive text actually starts. Can anyone help? Or maybe I'll just buy it anyway.

Mid 90s for me back when Let's Go started becoming a "hit" and getting airplay on "alternative" radio.

I remember buying the Op Ivy disc and a Fugazi t-shirt from the "punk" store in the Mall of America back in 95. (Talk about irony)
