After three seasonal burnouts from lackluster 10pks and super low drop rates of decent covers, I refuse to go hardcore anymore. The prospect of nerfing or rebalancing your favorite team by developers patch is also disheartening. However, i enjoy reading strategies from avid players.
I hear ya. I think I've broken through to the other side of that burnout. I think part of the key is to either not have a favorite team, or have more than one. Probably also helps if you aren't using the character that gets nerfed - Patchneto didn't really affect me because I was missing a Magneto cover and didn't put any effort in him. I finally got around to trying him in the Simulator PvE before his nerf, and definitely saw what people were going to be losing.
As for bad drops, I've come to terms that tokens are shiny junk. Sure, you might get something useful every so often, but it's like counting on a slot machine to pay the rent. The only way to reliably get covers is through progression awards and winning events. And it sucks that to do that, you need the Catch 22 of a good team.
Wow, well thought out and I concur koju. Does being top 100 really take 1000 points each?
I earn 400 to 700 each time. And I don't even have the best roster or the most aggressive playing style. If we all chipped in 500. That wouldmgive us 10000 points. where would that place?
It's hard to say, because you can't scroll the list and the historic leaderboards have been broken. But look at it this way - go look at the tenth place alliance. Right now that's Immortal Rage, and at least half of them are over 1k with a decent amount of time left. Everyone on that team will get more points today. And anyone who wants to take tenth spot from them is doing the same, and that flows down. Teams at the 100 line are fighting over the same placement, perhaps even more fiercely. You can bet whatever alliance is currently 101 is scraping up every last point they can get.
So if you want to break into that, you not only have to get everyone on board for scoring higher than these other teams, but then everyone has to work to stay ahead - nobody is going to tip their hat as you stroll by with a 'Jolly Good Show!', they are going to try and smack you back down into the garbage ranks where you belong, scum.
it is just a game and i really appreciate all the thought you guys put into this.
im getting constantly attacked once i get above 50th place. i usually only shield in the last few hours. should i be doing it more frequently?
Placement has nothing to do with how much you get attacked - it's points and how active your MMR band is. My advice for shielding is that if you ever get to where you want to be, you need to start using shields. So if you get a top 50 spot and want to keep it, you need to shield until the next time you plan to play.
That being said, below around 700 points, shielding has minimal return on investment if there is plenty of time left in the event. If you can fight back to that point level in a few matches, it's more valuable to do that and have positive income (ISO match rewards) over shield expense.
There is also a 'last hour' factor. The last hour of any event is where people change their strategy based on their goals. If you are barely holding on to a reward band, there are people below you looking to gamble on stepping over your corpse on the way up. That's why I tend to recommend shielding in the reward tier above the one you'll be happy with if you aren't going to play that last hour gamble.
All that goes out the window when shield hopping is in play - at that point, you are shielded whenever you aren't playing, and breaking them is a cost of doing business for a top spot.
Actually yes Koju, you're going in the direction I mean for this discussion to go towards. I have much to say & I'll be off on a tangent myself. Forgot daylight savings time, Im not sure if it's almost 3 or 4am now....
Cool. Considering how I work with coverting time in my paying gig, I am amused by DST talking about DST. I'm such a nerd.
