I like a lot of stuff Publix makes though. I try to buy generic whenever I can, but if I can tell a difference then I will always pay a premium for what I want.
There is nothing wrong with that. If you taste the difference pay the premium. I only drink liquor mixed with soda. So I buy cheap liquor since I dont taste much difference between Ron Rico rum and the expensive stuff. My buddies all drink fancy liquor cause (their fancy) they say its better. Good for you, but I paid less than half what you did suckers! lol

Is this the right beer? If so they have it at that place that has DirtWolf. I haven't managed to get over there yet, but this is more incentive to go. They have 12 oz bottle for $6.99.

Yes it is. It is phenomenal. Pro-tip: just chill it. You do not want it fridge temp or you will not be able to taste all the flavors in it. Ideally if you have a wine fridge that is around 55 or so, that would be perfect.

Im always hesitant to suggest that one unless it is someone like wren who I know loves the Belgian Quad style. Hopefully you will like it if you decide to splurge and get one.

If old man Chewy gets some of that Rochefort before I get to try it I will be mighty upset!

And Gator, I doubt any of us will be able to tell the difference between flavors in 55 and 32 degree beer.  I am pretty sure the La Fin I had came out of a cold fridge and not a wine cooler and that shit was still awesome.

Then let the next one warm up in the glass for a while after taking your first sip. If you honestly do not think it tastes better warmer, I will buy you a beer next time I am in Tampa.

This assumes you are pouring it in a glass to begin with. The aroma being more pronounced when it is warmer is part of the flavor too. It won't matter if you are drinking it out of a bottle.

They did pour it into a glass for me at the bar. I will do the same at home. For sure.

MAGFest was fun yesterday, but I didn't enter any tournaments. Not even the Claw machine. I did sign up, but then my youngest and I got swept up in playing arcade machines like Pac-Man Plus, Donkey Kong, Gyrus, Duck Hunt (arcade) and Excitebike (arcade) and missed the start of it. Most of the time I was chaperoning him around so didn't get to do a lot of stuff I'd like to have, like pinball, but that was OK. We were having a blast. Next year I really need to take them one day and go on my lonesome another day.

And with this post if anybody questioned the beer geek part of my username they won't now....

The type of glass actually does matter here too. I always thought that was bull shit until I poured the same beer in a few different syles of glasses. I thought I was finally going to put it out of my mind with that test, but I did the exact opposite.

Many of the Belgian brewers use goblets for their glassware. Most people wouldn't have those, but a lot have wine glasses which are pretty close. I actually prefer a brandy snifter since it focuses the aroma more. Tulips also work really well, but that is a bit more obscure like a goblet. Any of these would be better than a standard pint glass. With that said if a pint glass is all you have, use it. Just don't drink it from the bottle.

I can guarantee you there are a lot more places in Milwaukee that have that beer. Discount Liquor is the one I always hear about. I would be shocked if they did not try to keep it in stock.

That beer menus site is great, but there are only a handful of cities where you can really trust its results. I seriously doubt Milwaukee is one of those. Chicago and San Francisco it seems to be pretty reliable.

tl;dr

drinking glasses are to beer geeks as record player needles are to audio nerds?

Bonus points if you can explain why there's a difference between the glass of the bottle and a snifter.

I knew this because of these Belgian beers I have been drinking. the place I had St Bernardus at used a Snifter style Goblet. I had the La Fin Du monde in one too at the other bar. So these two bars I went to did it right. Now I may need to go buy one. After the divorce...

We use these wine glasses we have without stems for beer. I also have some traditional pint beer glasses, but I prefer using the wine glasses. I'm not sure if it matters what type of beer, but I do think beer tastes better in them.

True, between Discount liquor and Woodmans I can find almost any beer, and both are within a few miles from my house.

You gave me an easy one.

Drinking out of the bottle you can not smell the beer at all, there just is not any room for the aroma to go. What little there is you put your mouth over when you drink it. With the snifter it is the exact opposite. There is a huge bulb like area of air for the aromas to fill. Then they are concentrated due to the shape of the glass. You put your nose in it when you take each sip.

You ever wonder why a lot of Bud drinkers will say, "I can only drink my beer out of the bottle. It tastes like shit on tap." That statement is because they have a good enough nose to know the aroma is not appealing. Serve it ice cold out of a bottle and they can not only not taste it due to it almost being ice, they can't smell it either. They might as well be drinking water and saving the calories.

The mail lady we got today is the laziest mail carrier in my city. She passes houses so she doesn't have to get out of the truck to deliver the mail. She passed my house and I called her out on it the next time I saw her and she says not allowed to leave the truck which is bull shit. She always smokes cigarettes like it's going to be her last, so now all our mail stinks like I used to 6 years ago.

All the people on my street hate when this lady gets this route. The normal carrier tells me that he always has so much mail to deliver when she gets his route for the day. I told him about how she passes houses and he was pissed off.

All the people that live near me wishes she would just get fired since she does a shitty job and stinks up their mail with her coffin nails.

*Rant Over*

Actually, I was watching Bar Rescue one night and I think it was Milwaukee they were in. And they said that Milwaukee has more bars or beer drinkers or something per capita than any other major city in the states. So I can see Milwaukee places having all kinds of beer.

The difference is Bud is cheap, easy to find and has alcohol. Rednecks dont give a damn about calories. Or taste. Hell, most rednecks I know drink Bud on "fancy" occasions. Otherwise they drink shit like Old Milwaukee or Busch.

The entire state of Wisconsin should be out of the running when anything about beer drinking is discussed. No reason to compare the professionals with all the rest of us amateurs.

I won't say they have the best brewers (although one is near the top of my list) but drinkers there is no comparison.

Probably, but it's way past lunch. I'll just get some on the way home. As long as I bring stella artois with me I won't be drinking alone, but I'm sure we'll be drinking out of the bottle like a couple of bud swigging hobos.
You should drink that out of the bottle, its not that good </asshole>

EDIT: It is not really that bad, but there are soooo many better beers from Belgium. It really is the equivalent of Belgian Budweiser. They are even owned by the same company now.

Pete, you are in Kansas right?  If so, I am guessing this would be really easy to find.  Track down a 4 pack of Boulevard Tank 7.  You can thank me later.

I'm cool with that. Drinking newcastle is my idea of living high on the hog. I'm not really a connoisseur in any other part of my life but maybe beer is where I'll start when I have the future motivation.

Yeah you can't walk 5 feet without tripping over a boulevard tap/bottle. When I was still going out I'd always try whatever new thing they had but I'd always come home to their wheat.

In general, I am not a fan of brown ales. With that said, I actually think Newcastle is pretty good. If you like that and Stella, you would have your mind blown by some of the other things you could easily get your hands on. Start out with that Tank 7 and let me know what you think.

Gator should research and recommend a specific beer for everyone in the thread. He already got me, Chewy and Pete.
Dont forget Tyler with the Big Bad Baptist. I am glad he liked that one. That beer is a bit of a monster.

It isn't just about where you live, it is knowing what beers or other types of alcohol you like as well. Like suggesting an IPA to you would be a bad move. To Tyler or Chewy, it wouldn't be. I am guessing it would be to Pete based on the 2 he has mentioned.

I'd rather not drink at all, than drink shitty Budweiser or Coors.

I love Guinness Draught (Stout if I'm in the mood), Boddingtons, New Castle, & Bass. I don't know shit about have the stuff Gator talks about with beer but I'd respect his choices on new ones to try.

I've gone many night of not drinking because only shitty beers were available.

I'm actually not wild about Stella at all, it's the wife's goto which makes it easier to convince her exhausted ass that we should be drinking beer instead of going to bed.

Definitely will try the recommendation though.

We could tell because you mixed up your he's and she's in the mail story. Try and re read that second paragraph. lol
No dumbshit, our normal mail carrier is a guy but occasionally we get this lazy ass lady. Next time I post a rant I'll make sure to be more specific so I don't confuse you.

I'm gonna go ride a bike, might even pop a wheelie!

Now you have me worried with the not liking Stella line.

If you do try it, especially with the wife, look at the bottle before pouring. If there is yeast sediment in the bottom be sure to pour it slow. Nothing will turn off an unsuspecting victim faster than yeast floaties in their beer. Many craft beers are not pasteurized or force carbonated like others are. That means they actually have active yeast and priming sugar in the bottle. It is a mini fermentation process in the bottle that causes the carbonation. The result of that is dead yeast that ends up at the bottom.

Pour too fast and/or try to get every drop out of the bottle and there will be yeast floating in your beer.

Hey Gator, you ever have the Leinie's Big Butt Dopplebock?  It was my favorite by them, but then they stopped making it.  Just found it at the store this past weekend and it's just as glorius as I remember.

I know you're not totally into the mass market beers, but curious on your take.

I have not had that one since they started making it again. The Big Eddy's Imperial Stout is very nice. I have heard similar reports of the IPA they make in that line, but I have not personally had it.

I tend to stay away from Dopplebocks. They just are not usually in my wheelhouse and I have never really been able to put my finger on why. The only ones from the bock family that really speak to me is the Schneider Aventinus which is a wheat dopplebock. That and its big brother the Eisbock version are both awesome.

It gets bonus points for the awesome glass too.

EDIT: I just realized I am suggesting a wheat beer to someone who's wife has a gluten problem. Apologies, but I assume she has to almost always stay away from beer?

Or I am drunk and dont know it. Did I somehow get a contact drink from looking at all these beers?

Thanks. I'll keep an eye out for those ones. Liquor stores around me have a pretty good selection, but I always feel overwhelmed when I go through the big aisles of expensive four packs. I need to create a note on my phone that I just add your recommended beers to.

See, this one would make me nervous. You seem to only like beers from the UK (apologies to the Irish) which tend to be flavorful, but tame in comparison to US beers. At the same time, you living in California with all the great brewers there and your love for Mary would have me wanting to suggest the dankest of the dank IPA for you to try.

Those beers from the UK use noble hops which are more earthy.

Which one might that be
Have I not mentioned New Glarus enough times for you not to have to ask that question? :)

That is not a 4 pack or 6 pack. That is actually a 500ml bottle. I think that is the only way that one is imported, but I can not say that with 100% certainty. The Eisbock is a smaller bottle because it is like 12% alcohol. I would not try that one unless like the original version and want to have something around for the bad days where you want to get the job done quicker. :)

Oh don't worry about that. She hasn't drank beer since she was probably 19 or 20. Before she had to go gluten free, we figured out she was alergic to beer, because she would get sick and start throwing up after drinking one or two light-weight ones. We tried wine coolers and those pre-packaged mix drink individual bottles (like Mike's and Smirnov things) and got the same result. The we realized it was the malt she was actually allergic to. So no malt beverages for her in the longest time. She hates the smell of beer now because it reminds her of being sick, so I had to watch my beer intake on potentially romantic nights.

Now she usually drinks hard ciders or wine, but mostly ciders. I try to keep up on good ciders for her, and I'm happy to see they are being made a lot more and are much easily available now. She doesn't mind mixed drinks either, just easier to have bottles in the fridge vs all the other stuff.

Ahh good to know. They had a whole section of the cooler dedicated to the 500ml bottles so I'll look for it next time I'm there.
