Lets put it this way, if people that have no interest in using these as DLC or displaying them for fun are buying them to simply speculate then turning around and selling them the same day they bought them for 2-4x the price, it sounds like a huge bubble, even more so than limited edition or rare video games themselves. I remember when GameStop had Xenoblade re-printed, there were so many people crying about it because their "investment" dropped in value and they were "promised" it would be rare.

This is delusional. Nintendo isn't going to make DLC without making new copies of the Amiibos. There would be no way to make their money back on the cost of development. They might put the cards out but as long as people are willing to spend $13 on the figures, they'll continue to sell them and make new ones. Nintendo cares more about someone getting their DLC than if your Amiibo is valuable - a lot more because they want to make money.
That again is pure speculation. Right now the outstanding rumor is that they're going to be the NC awards this year aka can't be bought at all

We should open a new "speculation amiibo" thread. All of this guessing, speculation debate and pseduo-arguing is making it difficult for people to keep up with amiibo news (e.g. X amiibo is now available on Y site or Z amiibo is available for preorder now).

Exactly!

Speculation is fun. Gives me something to read why I'm hitting this [add to cart] button endlessly.

"There was a error processing the request. Kindly retry."

I'm kindly retrying.

While I'm really hoping that IS the case, I can see NOA trolling us all by shipping them in the bubble mailers that they always send all their CN rewards in...

So the gold one for gold and the silver one for platinum? The gold is prettier and rarer because most people will be platinum this year. And no one will open the boxes making these platinum Mario amiibos worth less than MSRP...

So here is my horror story,  Went to Gamestop To pick up my shulk on Wednesday after I got my text message that my Amiibo was ready for pick.  When I got there one of the associates refuse to hand it over saying that they were instructed by the store manager to hold them till Friday, which I had argue since I notice no other store was doing that.  I told her I found it fishy but she said not to worry because all preorders were safe.  So came back to pick it up sunday morning to find out the manager had sold it before the 48 hrs of hold expire, meaning he had  sold it the Saturday morning. I got so mad I told him "don't tell me you sold my fucken amiibo. I was so furious he started dialing every store in town trying to get me one.  I waited for 15 minutes and walk outside for a bit because I was at the point I was going to loose it. Came back ask him for his name and the store number.  I told him those were dirty practices and I was going to report him.

Btw this somewhat of a joke but not completely. People are using all their codes. The platinum (silver) Amiibo could be much more common than the gold one if they're actually the prizes. Also, the people getting club Nintendo prizes won't open them making these sealed platinum amiiibos very common.

No, I don't understand why everyone tries to match up the colors with the "perk levels". There's no reason to do that. They'd likely give the "gold" amiibo for the platinum level members (as gold > silver) and the silver for the "gold" level members. But who knows, I'm just guessing here. There's no reason though that gold has to = gold. They're not really related.

Well.... I would have called on Wed when you went to pick it up. And second.... I would not have waited until Sunday. Not saying it's your fault but You gave GS two extra opportunities to screw you and as we all know they only require one chance to fuck you.

Okay hypothetical situation: gold members get the gold Amiibo. Platinum members chose between gold and platinum (silver). Which do you chose?

if nintendo cared about everyone getting the characters then they wouldn't make amiibos rare hard to get. They have hundreds of other amiibos characters to make, they dont' care if little jimmy doesn't have his wii fit trainer or little mac amiibo. They can buy a DLC card if they really want it or buy it from ebay. It's the same thing with these limited edition majora's mask consoles. Boo hoo you can't buy one, buy our next limited edition console, there is no reason for them to make more when they have more editions to produce.

plus how could they not make money if they charge $9.99 for the dlc? They could sell the dlc for rare out of print amiibos and make more money than just selling the figure. It makes perfect sense.

So the gold one for gold and the silver one for platinum? The gold is prettier and rarer because most people will be platinum this year. And no one will open the boxes making these platinum Mario amiibos worth less than MSRP...
if you're platinum level you can choose the gold or platinum award.

I chose both, because I have an account at gold and an account at platinum, for this very reason. I don't know whether to say lol or make a sad face.

since the current discussion of this topic is beyond the general search of amiibos, I felt it was somewhat appropriate to post my overall stats on my amiibo purchases. I'm certainly okay with the scalper label and have used this site for years as a tool to offset this expensive video game hobby. This total includes wave 3 that I have on preorder and expect to be delivered:)

Purchased 43 amiibos for a total of $461.27

Sold 16 amiibos for a total of $652.90 (after fees/shipping)

$191.63 profit with 27 figures that will be part of my collection

I know this might rub some people the wrong way and we certainly don't need this thread to turn into a place of "bragging", but I would love to hear some stats from other CAGs.

oh and for those disgusted by my "scalping", I am giving 2 good couches to charity today:)

Why? If they're giving away an amiibo, why do I need a second one?
Because the program has ended and they offer multiple rewards, usually gold specific and plat specific (with plat members being able to choose between the two). At this point if you had the extra coins its makes perfect sense to have two accounts but I have had two for years now. So if both the gold and silver amiibos were the rewards (probably not going to be) why would you only want one?

For instance, last year they decided to make around 10 games as rewards, 5 on each tier. I was able to get both of the most expensive games (two full retail games) instead of just one.

What do you guys think was the hardest store exclusive to obtain was? I think it was lucario you had to be early in line most stores got only a few. Shulk was the easiest it was avaliable forever and it has another reprint. Rosalina was also very easy most stores got 20 or more. Meta Knight was pretty easy as you could just waltz into a bestbuy last wednesday and get him before release

Is $100 a lot of money?

Because I don't hoard things?

How is it hoarding if you are collecting amiibos and you get one Gold amiibo and one Silver amiibo? They are two different items...hoarding would be getting multiples of the same figure.

Sure, but in the past they've given out calenders which is definitely hoarding because they're trash after a year and I know people are keeping them even if you aren't one of them. And yes, having a stack of out of date calenders is definitely hoarding.

Um no you couldn't just waltz into bb and get mk. Just bc SOME have been able to do this, doesn't mean that it was an error at every bb and you could just do this. Not to mention some stores didn't have it in stock yet.

Im sorry, I have agreed with most of what youve been saying but I dont really follow what you are saying on this at all? You are saying that people who get the gold calendar each year as a reward are hoarding b/c they get a new calendar every year? I have only gotten a calendar twice b/c my second accounts didnt reach platinum but I am sorry, that is not hoarding. Hoarding is when someone gets multiples of the same item and it basically keeps others from obtaining that item. CN plat/gold rewards do not work that way...normal rewards, yes but the gold and platinum rewards they take orders WAY in advance and make enough to cover everyone who ordered them. If those rewards ran out then I could see you making a case for that but they havent ran out of rewards and made people choose a lesser or different reward than what was offered.

No, I mean getting the calenders and keeping them even when they are no good. In other words, you get three calenders three consecutive years but you keep all three of them even though two of them are no longer any good.

And I don't mean hoarding like, "He's hoarding those amiibos". I mean, hoarding like the actual clinical definition of it. I have a family member that literally has a room full of video game memorabilia. Every single console box since the 70's is in there. Empty, with the console sitting under a TV somewhere else. There are graphics cards boxes from the 90's, "just in case". That person would have a stack of Nintendo calenders that were no good if they were part of Club Nintendo too..

edit: I have the Super Starfox Super Weekend flight jacket for winning that contest in the 90's at a store. I have it vacuum packed and will either sell it or let my kid wear it if we ever go to a video game convention. I haven't decided yet. My family member also won that jacket at a different store. That person also has the entire cardboard display from the store stashed in the room. That room in the house is completely non-functional. That is hoarding.

I have preordered or already purchased 60 amiibos. 29 are for my set. 24 have been sold or allocated to friends at cost. I have 7 extras left that, once I do a last call on my forum, will be sold here at cost to those who need them.

I don't really care to make money off these things. This may sound like bullshit but it's not.

Well the thing is that unless you're pooling coins to make a large purchase, you don't get anything extra for adding coins to the same account after you reach platinum. It's less about hoarding and about maximizing your value with coins

Honestly I don't like to judge anyone and this Amiibo craze has brought some of the worst behavior out of people. This is America and flipping is totally fine. I buy as many as I can.... I keep the characters that I love ie; Captain Falcon, Mega Man, Shulk and any pokemon.... the others I use for trade bait or to fund more Amiibo purchases. This is a fun hobby and Nintendo makes it almost unbearable at times. But asshats who don't appreciate these characters and buy up all stock..... yeah fuck those guys

I like Jeff Gerstman but he's a hoarder. If you have a room in your house that looks like this then you're hoarding.

I have no problem with people making a buck either but he make like $200. Do you consider that a lot of money?

Seeing as I've been unable to get any of these at MSRP I'd say they're all equally impossible to get. By the time it became common knowledge that amiibos were hard to get, it was already too late for me to pre-order any of them (those of you that did are lucky as hell, who pre-orders anything anymore? Everything is always out in abundance nowadays). When I went to Target that Sunday morning to try for a Rosalina, there were 7 people in live and 6 Rosalinas. I left empty handed. Shulk is the amiibo I'm the most excited about because I loved Xenoblade Chronicles, yet I was unable to get him at any of the 6 Gamestops near me. I got in a pre-order for the May reprinting, so that's nice, at least.

I was out of town, away from any TRU locations when Lucario released. Meta Knight isn't even released yet. So yeah, I have none of them.

Ahh yeah I got ya, yeah Ill say I am guilty of that to an extent. In that sense of the term hoard, yeah I hoard some gaming and lego stuff for sure. Its just part of the collector mentality. Most stuff I do open and display at some point but some stuff I just cant bring myself to open. Plus if I tried to display everything I had it would just look like shit lol...not to mention my wife isnt having it so for me either open it, look at it, then put it back or just keep it sealing knowing I have it (which accomplished a lot, right? haha). As far as CN rewards go, I have only saved all the plat rewards Ive gotten and Zelda stuff...I held onto some things and eventually ebay'd them.

Probably Rosalina, the preorder window was barely open while the others were available for quite a while. I've never seen any of the exclusives in-store personally besides the Shulks I preordered. Rosalina's getting another release though, so it really doesn't mean much.

Well then what's the difference between hoarding and collecting then? Anyone who's in the collecting game will have a sizable (by normal standards) collection somewhere that takes up space.

Wait, you have a second account just in case they make the gold amiibo for the gold membership?
Yeah. That's EXACTLY what I'm doing right now. I can still redeem the coins to get a code for a game and then redeem said game on my 3DS, so nothing lost there. The only thing I lose is that there's possibly something I can't get because I split those 300 coins on my other account. Where as the possible gains is I don't have to pay an arm and a leg for the silver or gold amiibo respectively that I miss on my main CN account (if they even do it).

I haven't pulled the trigger on this yet, as I'm just trying to make sure I still got 300 coins worth of codes to enter, but I'll likely be doing this this week just for this reason.

Haha yeah this is definitely the form of hoarding he is talking about...its too much for me. :). Id love to have something like that but when I get so much I just have to say why do I need all this? I keep the stuff that means the most to me which I think is a lot but compared to something like this...I have basically nothing lol. I think my wife would just divorce me if any room in our house looked like that.
