You guys remember admiralvic? He used to be an editor or something over at a site called justpushstart.com. Before I even started posting here, I saw that site and there was a post about how they were looking for writers. I submitted an application and Vic contacted me. We had a chat through some messenger program, which he was treating like a job interview. I went along with it because I missed writing since I stopped once Lost ended. So he told me that he got in touch with the head dude of the site and they agreed I could write some stuff and eventually get into reviews.
But I declined the offer because of a conversation we had during that "interview." Basically, he asked me what some of my current favorite games were. It evolved into a conversation of how I like FFXIII more than Skyrim, and him telling me I could never say that on the site because I have to say positive things about popular games or else people wouldn't visit the site. So we had to form our opinions around public opinions. I told him I could never do that, and that if I felt something was shitty, or in the case of Skyrim...boring, I was going to say so.
But I think starting a website with the mindset "We're going to get so much free shit!" is a terrible idea. Start a site because you want to write and talk about games, and maybe the free shit will come someday.
