I just told you that you can buy a GTX 970 for $309 right this very moment -- maybe cheaper if you're a CAG ninja.. If you want to debate whether or not $9 turns a card into a different category of card, then whatever. I'm not the guy for that debate.

This conversation is going to be highly subjective anyhow as everyone has an individual budget and specific needs. What card is high/low/mid is always going to be open to debate. More important is the cost/performance ratio that each person must determine for themselves.

All I'm saying is that if you include every card under the sun, then your list is going to be skewed. You can't have a "Performance curve" if the bottom end struggles to run anything but pixel games.

In my mind, there are three tiers of viable mainstream gaming cards:

- low end (runs most games at low settings)

- mid-range (runs many games at high settings)

- high end (runs all games at Ultra settings)

If you're a gamer and you're not at least targeting high settings for most current stuff then you're going to quickly find your hardware outdated.
I'd add another category to that.

-enthusiast end (Titans)

"A man... is expected to have... certain... En-THU-siasms."

"Enthusiasms, enthusiasms!"

970 is mid/high.  Probably high.  980 would obviously be high with 980ti/Titans being... enthusiasms!

You know my favorite sport? Baseball!

Re GPU - oddly enough, Tom's Hardware slots 'enthusiast' between midrange and high end.
Entry = GT 730

Mid-Range = R7 260X

Enthusiast = 970

High End = 980 Ti

If I had to buy a video card right now, I'd probably go with a 960 that has 4gb and is superclocked.  I don't plan on doing 4k gaming, so its 128 bus wouldn't bother me a bit.  It seems like the sweet spot between price and performance when upgrading  my 560.

I don't plan on getting one until the fall or winter though.  I'm hoping maybe the 970 or (very unlikely, but maybe) the 980 (plain, not TI) would be more attractive price wise by then.

I agree with the majority of your post. I have a lesser rig than you do (R9 270X 2 GB and only 8 GB of RAM) and I'm enjoying the game fine. Im averaging 40-50 FPS at 1080p and I will have dips slightly below 30 when theres a crazy amount of things going on, but its not affecting the gameplay for me and for the most part I'm above 40 FPS all the time, even on nutty Batmobile stuff. Im above 60 FPS at times as well. I did have to do some tweaking in the .ini to get it to where I could enjoy it and not think about tech BS. I unlocked the framerate and I have most things on low although I have detail on High.

The biggest issue for me are some ugly textures in certain spots and the motion blur, but running it in windowed no border solved a lot of the motion blur problems for me. I am enjoying the gameplay and I paid about a third of the price of the game for a Nvidia key. The game is good and they'll patch it and hopefully everyone will be able to enjoy it. Its an excellent entry into the series.

The mass hysteria is overblown, but it could've been avoided. There's no reason why the majority of mid-range machines cannot handle this game at a high level had the job been done right. The masses are fuming because the majority of PC gamers are casuals and have budget rigs which one can gleam by looking at the Steam profiles of the people yelling the loudest. Rockstar were able to make GTA 5 look fantastic on even lesser machines, but it took them a long ass time to do. Rocksteady outsourced the PC port of this to a company with a poor track record of PC porting with a team of 12 people for one of the biggest franchises in gaming and rushed it completely. There's so many shortcuts taken with things (espc post-process effects) and weird architectural decisions which were clearly done because they wanted to meet their deadline.

That's just silly. I have a good PC, but it's not an enthusiast-level machine or anything, and it runs great. There are tons of options for you to turn on and off right in the menu if you have frame rate issues; it's not at all a bare-bones port. To lift the 30 FPS cap you edit ONE LINE in Notepad (whew - tough stuff).

I hate that lots of people seem to be having difficulty running the game at levels they deem to be acceptable because the game looks great, plays great, and so far the story is very interesting. So far, the open world from City is a little more focused in parts (like Asylum). It seems to be a good combination of both.

AK seems to be a great game, on par with the first two, and it's a shame it may not be optimized enough for everyone to enjoy it. The real shame, however, is that the issues seem to have created a crowd of people who have already jumped to the conclusion that because there are technical issues for some that it's a terrible game. I can't imagine that these things won't be addressed in some way because the engine is rock-solid and well-tested. People need to chill out and wait to see what happens. In the meantime, people always have the option to upgrade their hardware a bit and bypass any optimization problems.

For the record, my PC: i7 4790k, GTX 970, 16 GB RAM
Technical issues don't make a game bad - it just makes it hard to run. It's one of the reasons that even though I liked The Evil Within a lot - I couldn't run it well...so I tossed it aside, for now.

If a game gets patches, fixed, or whatever - then you can judge the actual game.

Honestly, it should run well on your PC - you have a 4GB 3.5 GB VRAM GTX 970 and a i7, for crying out loud!!

Also, this is interesting:

Eurogamer -> Looks at Batman AK PC version performance + also says it lacks some of the console visual features - such as Bokeh DOF + AO.

Just as baffling is the fact PC lacks key visual effects seen on PS4 even at its top settings. Ambient occlusion is cut from the game, bokeh depth of field is noticeably dialed back, and the transparency layer used for raindrops is cut from all surfaces as well. Gotham City is stripped of a great deal of atmosphere as a result, with areas appearing lighter without SSAO in place - despite this setting clearly being enabled in the .ini file.

Likewise, rain doesn't appear on Batman or the Batmobile as it does on PS4. The reflective, dewy sheen is missing across the city, though specular and normal maps remain identical to the console release. The PC's highest settings show very little difference otherwise to Sony's console, barring a tweak to motion blur velocity settings.

I'd say low end for the bulk of new/modern games at low settings, medium for medium settings and high - unsurprisingly - for high settings. Ultra or maxxed out is what SLI/Crossfire builds are for.

Anything that can't even handle low settings just isn't a gaming card.
Of course the big variable in all of this is resolution. There are cards that handle high settings but struggle at 4k.

Wow, huh?

EDIT:

The Batman: Arkham fans have continually supported the franchise to its current height of success, and we want to thank you for your patience as we work to deliver an updated version of Batman: Arkham Knight on PC so you can all enjoy the final chapter of the Batman: Arkham series as it was meant to be played.

Let's hope that's a thorough reworking, ala (but more effective than) Unity.

It's nice to see that they are doing the right thing. Let's hope the conclusion is a well-optimized game that doesn't cut features found on the less-powerful consoles.

Okay, let's talk about something different. So would you say the Nvidia 970 is low, medium or high end?

In regards to rendering Arkham Knight? It's somewhere between Joker and The Riddler

WB has to learn that if you intend to fuck over a discerning portion of your customers, it must be done very subtly or with yearly updates like AssCreed or Call of Doody. Got to milk us... But like a cow, i think, and not in a porno style way.

Arkham Knight is no longer available for purchase anywhere. That was quick as hell.

Anyone still defending this? First time I think a AAA game has been pulled from digital sales. It's the worst port that I can think of... yes, even worse than Dark Souls 1. There's really no defending this.

There's some post on Neogaf from a user that said the game as using 7.1 GB of VRAM staring at this wall:

Is that a texture pop waiting to drop the texture in, which is common w/ Unreal Engine game?

Or is that texture not loading b/c it is not even there?

Ive already put 9 hours into the game. I am enjoying it, but at this point Im going to wait for the updated version. Rocksteady could've avoided this had they actually put resources into the PC version. Its on them more than Warners at this point. Warner deserves scorn for publishing this mess, but Rocksteady made the developer decisions. Monolith had no trouble producing a fantastic version of Shadow of Mordor for the PC on time with the consoles.

He said he waited there two minutes and nothing popped in/textures stayed the same. But even that aside... 7+ GB VRAM? Plz.

It got pulled but I have a key and will sell it to you for $300 -- totally worth it because it was pulled from Steam!

Obviously, it was loading the city behind the wall. Duh.

Edit: I'm supposed to be joking. But in my mind, I'm really thinking that's what's happening.
