Thanks I'll have to look into that. So far the units have last awhile but they do cut into their electric bill.

We just put a window one in over the weekend. And by we, I mean the handyman guy we paid to do it. Not really concerned about removing it come winter time. It barely drops below freezing here.

It's just a window one to keep the upstairs cool at night, but since we're in our second week of temperatures all at 90+ it's a must. We'll look at doing full central air next year.

Shitty as fuck. Had an HVAC guy come check it out and he was impressed with how bad it was. You can hold a lighter about 3-4 inches away from the vents on the main floor and the flame won't go out. Even closer on the top floor. It's definitely an air flow problem.

He checked everything he could and everything is relatively new and in good shape. Only solution is to get improved duct work and increased intakes I think, that doesn't sound cheap buy maybe if I'm going to live hear a while I should just bite the bullet and do it.

If that is what he told you the problem is then be prepared for the unit to also wear out much sooner than it should. Having the right air flow iis a huge issue with how well the unit will last.

Just spend the money to get it working right or you will end up spending a ton on band-aids and still have a problem.

Does your heat not use the same duct work? Does it seem as inefficient on the bottom floor in the winter?

But the heat works ok? My heat comes out the same vents and the same blower/ducts push that out. Maybe the blower motor is going or something? Unless you have baseboards or some other type of heat.

What size (ton) is your system? What is the square footage of your house? Typical rule of thumb is 1 ton per every 600 square feet, but having a split or multi-storied house will effect that calculation. Do you have a heat pump or a split unit and are you on a concrete slab or do you have a crawl space? How many cold air returns do you have? Even if your system is properly sized for your house, if it is old or has a low efficiency rating it will struggle in the summer months if you live in a region where summers are hot.

PS: I keep wanting to type unit instead of system, but y'all would probably take that and run with it.

Edit: By heat pump I mean packaged (all-in-one) system. Everyone calls them heat pumps around here.

Heating uses the same duct work. Seems to work a bit better, but possibly I'm just more tolerant of the cold than the heat (just keep putting on layers, crawl under blankets, etc).

Basement is pretty cold in the winter, but I rarely go down there so again it's just not as noticeable and not as big of an issue. But yeah there is probably warm air flow issues in the house too.

I'd never heard of mini-split before. Intriguing, but I think we'll go the lower cost option for now.

I'd have to be home to answer some of these questions. House has 3 floors, each is about 600 square feet. Don't know what heat pump or split unit is. No crawl space. I think about 15 returns. Don't know the size of the system.

I don't understand this question. My setup is both a split unit and a heat pump.

With that said, with SLC having both extremes in terms of weather, I kind of doubt he has a heat pump setup.

Tyler, split unit means you have the outside unit as well as the inside piece.

I have a big fan looking thing outside that kicks on when I use the A/C and then a big metal furnace looking think inside in my basement.

So you have a splt system with the air handler in the basement. You have 15 vents that air flows out of; how many vents (returns) that suck air in? Hopefully you have one on each level; especially on the top level. If not, that may be part of why your air flow is so poor. When was the last time you changed your filter(s)?

I have no doubts that your furnace works just fine keeping your house warm; after all warm air rises, so even with poor air flow the warm air will gradually make it to the top floor. How an A/C system works is sound engineering, but the actual concept of an A/C system, using cold air to cool a warm house, flies in the face of the the first two laws of thermodynamics; which is why A/C systems cost so much and use so much energy. A poorly designed/installed duct system could be your problem; especially based off of your 'lighter' test.

My master bedroom is at least 5 degrees warmer than the rest of the house. I know its a combo of the ducts and being the furthest room from the AC unit. Can you come over and fix it for me?
