I tried it....uh..nefariously. I really want to support it b/c I want more AO games on Steam (better ones) and want there to be a market for them. I didn't beat it or play it very long and just wanted to see if it was worth dumping $20 into. Needless to say, its not.
The controversy is very overblown. Obviously, you're killing innocent people, but its a run of the mill isometric twin stick shooter. The controls absolutely suck, even with a control pad. They may have fixed this as I tried it during release week, but even with it fixed, I cant see it being anything Id stick with a long time. It looks very decent, environments are destructible and fire effects are great. I felt that the b/w was an interesting way to do it, but after I put about an hour into it, it felt like they went b/w to hide defects rather than anything artistic.
Its not the worst game Ive ever played by any stretch and I enjoy the hell out of twin stick shooters so Im biased with any praise Im giving it. But it just got boring. Theres execution animations you have to pull off as its the only way to replenish health, and they get boring quickly. The biggest problem was the controls though, they were just terrible and for a twin stick shooter its necessary for the controls to be one of the strongest aspects.
Basically, its not worth $20 whatsoever and its one of those wait til rock bottom or bundled (although I think AO may keep it out of most bundles). I'll play and finish it when I get it cheaply, but for now, not worth the price of admission.
