Unfortunately you can't swap out the XBOX DVD drive with a PC one.  Drive  needs to be from another XBOX.  Hopefully you can clean it and it will work.

So I've gathered. Music CDs read fine, but initial cleaning didn't do anything for DVD or game playback - now it's a matter of "do I want to bring my xbox into electronics laboratory and mess around with potentiometers and multimeters, or just wait around until I find a cheap replacement that's in-stock".

A little annoying, particularly because mine's a Samsung sdg-605 - supposedly the type least prone to failure. Either way, I'll definitely be more cautious around these things in the future.

So I had a fairly decent day that had a sour turn at the end.

Sixth Sale

Dark Brown Nintendo DSi Xl System (No Charger) - $10

I was pretty happy with the day until I got home. I guess in my exciement, I neglected to check the condition of the GameCube games.  :wall:

Mario Kart is in great condition... however....

Super Smash Bros is extremely scratched up. I doubt it will play. It can probably be salvaged with a resurface, though.

Paper Mario has some marks, but nothing really horrible. Will probably play fine.

Pokemon Collesium, however, is probably FUBAR. It's covered in scratches, which could be resurfaced... but there is a fatal blow. The center ring of the disc has a crack in it. It hasn't yet reached the inner disc, but I don't know if I can do much with it. If I resurface it, it can probably work... but I'm worried that crack in the center is just going to keep getting worse.

That's not all, though. The DSi XL's speakers aren't working, either. I'm thinking of trying to repair them with a bit of novice soldering... but I'm not sure if I should just sell it as is.

All in all... not a bad day. In hindsight, at least Super Smash Bros can be fixed fairly easily. Pokemon Collesium is likely a dud, but at least I got the box art. I'm hoping I can get the DSi XL speakers working. No clue if the NES is going to work. The rest of the games are all in great condition.

Anyone here with a disc resurfacer willing to do some surgery on my games?

Got a Samsung Blu-Ray player for five bucks today. Can you believe it? Five bucks! Blows my mind how cheap this stuff has gotten. Haven't found any video game stuff tho.

I've thought about the cracked disc thing...What about a non-expanding super glue/epoxy? Spooge (the CAG) seems to have the ability to resurface pretty well. I forgot what machine he uses.

Looking around, the options seem to be "JFJ Products, or a $2000 machine".

It's a bit annoying, obviously I'm not gonna drop a few grand on one for personal use, but I wouldn't mind bumping up to $350-$600 for quality assurance; I'd get the JFJ Eyecon and EasyPro bundle, but there's just enough bad press and reviews weighing against the good ones that I'd want another user's direct recommendation. Again, if anyone happens to know a quality brand/machine, I'd love to know.

Sega Dreamcast System/W cords + 2 Controllers + 1 VMU + Fighting Force 2 and NBA 2K1

$2

I figured the price was so cheap because the system probably didn't work but I figured $2 was worth it for the games/accessories alone.  But luckily the DC booted right and up and works like a charm!  This is probably the cheapest I have (and ever will) pay get a working game system in my entire life.

Very nice catch. I've got plenty 'o Dreamcasts (some working, others not) so I don't need more, but I applaud your find nevertheless.

I haven't been very good about keeping up with posts, but then again I've had a pretty busy schedule and a hard time finding anything. A few weeks ago I did find a 4gb XBox 360 Elite for $25, but that's been about it until this weekend when I had a chance to hit a few community sales. I got beat to some video games right off the bat, but later I did manage to snag a complete N64 and a complete XBox for $5. At the end of the day though, I snagged these beauties for $15 altogether.

Sunday morning I scored some CiB games for the Omni Entertainment System for $8 ($2 each). Never heard of the system before, but I figured they were neat enough to grab.

*******NON-GAMING FINDS********

My first find on Saturday morning was this awesome plastic-molded Halloween lamp. My parents collected this sort of thing so they make me very nostalgic. Gonna be working it into my own decorating.

After the lamp I found this monstrosity: a Carrot Top alarm clock. I got it for $2, because I am an idiot.

Those Game & Watches are such a cool find! I've found all kinds of stuff yard sailing, but I've never found a G&W.

My Saturday wasn't too shabby.

$10- New Super Mario Bros, Just Dance 2014, Kirby's Return to Dreamland (all complete)

$3-   Donkey Kong Country Returns

$20- 3' Blue M&M Store Display

$5 -  Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 for PS3

$3-   Key to the Kingdom board game

$3-  Sony D-FS601 CD Walkman

$8-  1972-74 Hess Tank Trailer in Box

$11- Bronzed Napoleon Bust (Courvoisier advertisement)

Very nice catches on the Game + Watch systems. The Carrot Top alarm clock... maybe not so much.

I have a funny feeling that the clock was designed as merchandise for the ill-fated film Chairman of the Board (to quote Norm MacDonald: "I bet it's spelled b-o-r-e-d.").

Yup, the logo for the movie is on the side. No regrets, there's just some things out there that are so exquisitely bad they're beautiful.

I finally got something worth mentioning this weekend. I got a nearly complete copy Maniac Mansion for $1 including both 5-1/4″ and 3-1/2″ floppies. There’s also a big poster and a Lucasarts product guide that I did not take pictures of. The only thing missing is the “red lens decoder” to use with the anti-piracy booklet.

Also an Original Xbox with 3 controllers (including a wireless Logitech) for $5

The clock is some sort of promo item for Carrot Top's infamous movie Chairman of the Board. Can't find any info on it, but I bet someone would love to own it. Maybe Norm MacDonald: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL0WayC7jW0

So I was going through a binder that I bought and I found a dorm room check in sheet with the guy's full name and SSN (I put it with my stuff to shred at the bank). I also found a girls gone wild DVD in it. I don't know if I mentioned that before, but add me to the pseudo porn finders. I'm actually going to go through a large amount of stuff tomorrow, so I should have more time to post some finds...

Time to start a new sub-thread; Yard sale porn trading thread.

Also, had a pretty decent find this morning. Sale opened at 7:30, slipped in before work. Details in 2018.

If you hook it up and press and hold the power button until you get 3 beeps it should give you a menu or bring up d red screen. If it is a red screen it means it is a hardware problem.

Today started out miserable. I went to like 25+ sales a didn't buy a single thing. Finall, towards the end, I ended up getting a few things.

First Sale

:wii: Mario Kart Wii (Complete) - $3

Second Sale

:wii: Mario Kart Wii (No Manual) - $5

Third Sale

:wii: Wii Sports Resort (Complete) - $2

Fourth Sale

:xb1: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Complete) - $5

:xb1: Halo: Master Chief Collection (Complete) -$5

I didn't really wanna pay $5 for the second Mario Kart Wii... but I literally waited for like 15 minutes for her to go into the house and find it. So I figured why not?

I was pretty surprised to see Xbox One games, especially complete and in perfect condition. They were marked $10 each, but she took $10 for both.

It's been ridiculously hot lately so I didn't stay out long. Considering that, this was a pretty good morning.

[attachment=17799:IMG_5110.JPG]

This was from the first sale I went to, luckily got there just before some competition (another guy walked up and asked about games as I was leaving). They said $10 for the game or $15 for both - strange pricing but I wasn't going to argue. The system looks like it's only been played a couple of times.

[attachment=17800:IMG_5112.JPG]

Another example of weird pricing. This guy had a bunch of overpriced game stuff out ($200+ for a 360, etc) so I wasn't expecting much. But he looked at these games and said "oh, those are older, so how about $5 for all of them?" Gladly paid that and was on my way. Bioshock is missing the figure and Halo only has one of the discs, though.

[attachment=17801:IMG_5111.JPG]

As for these...is anyone who knows Beyblade willing to help me out? I know these are launchers, but that's about it. Took a chance on the lot for $1.

It sounds like it's overheating... you might be able to clean the debris out of it, depending on whether or not you're brave enough to open it. But really, those early George Foreman models typically don't last long anyway. Don't expect miracles.

Couldn't go out last week (brakes got fucked up), so I was determined to get some decent pickups. And I did!...though with garage sales visibly becoming few and far between, it's a little bittersweet.

Picked up Madworld and two wii silicone sleeves (not pictured) for $2.50 off of $5.50 asking; Madworld's a game I've wanted for a while, and while it isn't particularly expensive, the game was immaculate and the lady dropped her price easy. What really makes this one worthwhile, though, is that heeding her craigslist ad dropped me off right next to a different, huge, unadvertised one, which had a much better collection, including a bunch of games for various systems, Pokemon and Yugioh cards, general nerd stuff, all tucked away in a single corner.

Grabbed Silent Hills 3 and 4, RE:Outbreak, and Atari anthology for $10, $12 asking; I was surprised to see the Hills, as most of the surrounding was your standard sports and licensed drivel. There was also a very nice condition OG GBA (glacier clear) I tried to add in for a bundle price of $15, but the mid-twenties dude who was running the corner separate from the normal proceedings thought he was playing hardball ("Nope, these go for a lot on Ebay") so I had to pass. I gave a half-hearted "eh, they're only about $20 on there" but didn't press the issue, as the last thing I wanted was him going and looking up the prices, thus bringing himself to the realization that each SH was worth more than the GBA by themselves. Speaking of, they (and the other two games) are immaculate, have perfect covers and manuals, and in the case of SH3, the OST included. Passed on the cards, as I figured I wouldn't be able to get a good deal on them, though I would have liked some (had a complete Exodia set, they're always big nostalgia bait for me).

Capcom classics was $2 at a different sale, the three Namco plug-and-plays $8 for all, talked the lady into throwing the second Pac-man model one in for free on top of the $4 each she had marked. Arcade classics kind of seemed to be the theme this week, though I'm particularly happy with these - I always wanted these exact models back when I was a vidja-less kid, but Christmas ended up bringing a generic crap 50-in-1 thing instead. They all work perfectly, with the exception of a couple exploded batteries I had to deal with. Lady had a Spongebob, Darth Vader, and Dora one too, but I didn't feel like taking a chance (and they're a bit garish).

And, finally, MMBN5 (complete) and KH:CoM were $15; more than I'd like, but I decided against my better judgement to try out a $5 admission Flea Market being held on the State Fair grounds, despite knowing that pretty much all vidja is boggarted by the vendors in the area, who then sell at $5-$10 below ebay going rate; generally not worth it. There was originally a boxed Pokemon Leaf Green in there too that I planned to resell, but they had the boxed games re-sealed, and after I CiF'd $45 on $60 asking and left, I opened the thing only to find a ratty Pokemon emerald and no wireless adapter, so back I went. Sellers were sports about it though, and though they couldn't find the Leaf Green cart what was meant to be in there, they did keep the better part of my discount on the rest, making it $15 on $25 asking.

This find was unexpected, but competing with the Silent Hills for my find of the day. Lot pictured here was $10, all in a random box at a soccer fundraising sale. Includes PS2 Phat (tested, works!), memory card, 2 logitech ps2 wireless remotes w/dongles, disc binder with lots of garbage (of them, lego star wars 1 and 2 are fun, but I already have complete copies, while scooby-doo NoOF and Namco Museum are decent enough and continue the theming), GBA carrying case with GBA car charger, regular charger, headphone adapter, headphones, multi-function link cable for GBA AND gamecube linking, games (Shark Tale, Monster Truck Madness, Spider-Man 2, Backyard Sports, and Pac-Man pinball), and some weird gba shelf thing with slots for two GBA carts on the bottom.

...missing: GBA. I have no idea why, and I realized too late that I really should have asked.

Either way, I was pretty happy with this, then got REALLY happy when I tested the wireless controllers with my own slim system. First impression's incredibly positive, these things might just become my go-to PS2 controllers. I've never had a non-official controller that felt, looked, and worked this well before.

Kd97nNK.jpg

And, finally, giant Pika. My youngest sister has been begging me to give her one of my Pika-pair I got from a sale a couple months back for a while now, so when I saw this, I knew it would be mine. And then subsequently hers. Same soccer sale as the PS2 lot, paid a buck, washed it, threw it at sister, she was ecstatic, and now I won't be bugged any more. I'd buy that for a dollar any day.

I picked up a GameCube interactive demo disc version 10 for $1. Anyone know if it's worth anything? I figured for the price it would be cool for my collection.

Had another nice little find this weekend. Everything below I got from the same yard sale and was $19 altogether. The PS1 games were free because the guy thought they were missing discs, but turns out most of them are just 1 disc games. The XBox games on the spindle were also free since I mentioned I've been doing a little OG XBox gaming and he'd just backed his up. Silent Hill 2 and Persona are missing the manual and Xenogears plus FFVIII are missing discs, but not a bad score at all! The guy has more stuff he's thinking of getting rid of, but he wanted to research prices on those first.

WTF indeed. Between this and last week I'm thinking maybe all my luck is gonna come out in one big deluge after being so crappy all summer.

Thanks for the suggestion. Took the hard drive out and dusted it off. Since I didn't have a torque 10 screwdriver just took my vacuum and sucked some dust out of the vents. Plugged it back in and works like a charm. There were actually Resident Evil 6 saves on it from the end of July.

Edit: So I didn't realize it but this PS3 is backwards compatible too. $15 well spent

Which BC model is it? 20/60 GB or 40/80 GB?

Congrats! I once used a vacuum cleaner on the back of a Playstation 2 that was overheating. It really seemed to do the trick.

I don't really trust the early PS3s, but as long as it's still working, make the most of it!

80Gb model.

I see what you mean I tried turning it back on this morning and back to the original problem. I have to take it all the way apart tonight. At least I know it works.

Complete bust. Went to an estate sale with listed ninty and sega consoles, finally found them in the basement, was dismayed to see snes and nes each labeled $40, n64 $50, atari $40, ps1 $20, so on and so forth. I called one of the sale staff over, asked where da gamez were at (who buys an snes and only gets football '95? TWO PS1s and no games for them?), she asked her boss, nope, no games.

SO. I walked off, grabbed $30 out of my wallet, got a nice big stack of singles in there, go up to the dude, and start the spiel. "Hey, I'm interested in some of the game stuff you have over there, but they're in pretty bad condition. The dreamcast you have $20 on doesn't have any controllers, so it's unplayable, the NES is covered with gross stickers and is disco-"

"YES, AND THAT'S WHY I ALREADY HAVE THEM MARKED FOR A FAIR, REASONABLE PRICE, AS YOU SAW."

Welp. I still took a stab at it, said "eh, not really,  I usually see a lot of this stuff for $5 around here (true)" then CIF'd him the $30 for three of them. I got something, but it sure as hell wasn't video games. First time I've been stonewalled like that, but there was no winning that fight.

Beyond that, a lot of nothing, a flea market that listed itself as today despite being scheduled for Nov. 6th-8th, and a couple of goodwills with $5 Gameboy tetris carts and $25 Ouya controllers (lol). Figured when even the thrift stores are trying to gouge you it's time to quit, though I did pick up a bunch of Duracell rechargeable batteries (4x 1k mAh AAA, 3x 1700 mAh AA, 3x 2650 mAh AA) and a charger for $2 total. I was hungry for these so it's a nice consolation prize, with all my new wiimotes and game boys/gears and plug n' play consoles I was on the verge of buying straight from Amazon, though again my CIF failed me as I couldn't get away with $1.

So I had a pretty good day. Few sour marks... saw something that bummed me out (completely unrelated to garage saling and something that probably other people wouldn't bat an eye at)... still, it bothered me enough to distract me from noticing games in plain view. Luckily the lady running the sale asked me what I was looking for and pointed them out to me... my mind was pretty much completely unfocused at that point.

Anyway, here's the summary of what I got.

Sale 1:

:ds: Mario Kart DS (Cart only) X2 - $1 each.

Sale 2:

:psp: PSP Model 1000. (No charger, no memory stick, missing thumbstick, but came with battery.) - $3

I regret this purchase because I got home and tested it... it turns on, but doesn't read UMDs. Anyone wants it for $10 + ship, let me know.

Sale 3:

:ds: Crimson Red DS Lite (No Charger) - $1

:ds: Mario Kart DS (Complete)  - $1

The DS is acting kinda weird. Sometimes it doesn't want to stay on if it's not plugged in, even though the battery is fully charged. Sometimes it won't turn on, so I plug it in and turn it on... then I unplug it and it drops power. What seems to fix it, is if I plug it in and turn it on while the shell is closed, then I unplug it and open it back up and it stays on and will behave normally for a while. I will be able to power it on and off normally without having to plug it in. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing these issues?

Sale 4:

:3ds: New Super Mario Bros 2. (Complete) - $5

:3ds: Shinobi (Complete) - $2

Sale 5:

:ds: Mario Kart DS (Cart only)  - $1 (Yes, this was my fourth copy of Mario Kart DS today)

:ds: Yoshi's Island DS (Boxed, no manual)  - $1

:ds: New Super Mario Bros (Boxed, no manual)  - $1

:ds: Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Box only, no game or manual)  - free

:ds: DS Rumble Pak  - free

:ds: DS Action Replay  - free

icon3216_gba.png
Pokemon Ruby (Cart only, no label) - $1

icon3216_gba.png
Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (Cart only) - $1

So yea... aside from seeing something that bummed me out and my two handhelds not working perfectly, it was a fairly decent day.

Ya can't tease us like that and not tell what it is, Slowdive does enough of that in this thread. :whistle2:$

If you feel up to it, give us a story. Season is winding down anyway and this thread veers off topic plenty.

I was just going to post that I picked up 2 boxes of free CDs and VHS/DVDs. Now the pics will be pushed back to 2024 and I will send them by holophone (hologram telephone) which I will eventually invent.

It has nothing to do with yard saleing... not as if I missed out on some games or something. I didn't really want to detail it here because it's not really pertinent to the discussion and most people probably wouldn't be affected like I was. It's just something I was letting off my chest a little. Let's just say I'm an animal lover.

So it seems I've got the DS working pretty much perfectly... but one of my Mario Kart DS games is likely FUBAR. One of the plastic bars is broken on the chip. I dunno if that's salvageable.

Got this stuff for free. I saw a guy post on FB that he had free stuff by the curb about 5 miles from my place.

You can zoom if you want to look at the titles. The 2 CDs in the bottom right corner are still sealed.

PMed you on that PSP

I think I found a place where the Lego and games in my area were disappearing to.  There was an auction house that opened up their doors to the public as a flea market.  They had 3 SNES star wars games in box at $50 a piece and they told me they had sold quite a few others a couple of weeks ago.  They had also just carried in a bin full of Lego from their car.  I'm thinking that's one of the reasons things are bought up as soon as the sales open.

I picked up a Wii with The Last Story for $10 yesterday. It was in terrible shape, though. What can I say? I'm a sucker for hard luck cases.

Like, ew man. Ed Asner is less crusty. However, after a thorough cleaning, the system looked a lot better.

A bit scratched up, but functional. Those Wiimotes are shot to hell, though.

Nintendo hardware has always been built like tanks. I've yet to encounter any nintendo hw that's DOA. Maybe a toaster here and there but thats about it.

I always thought Wiimotes could survive anything. After all, there are those stories of a thrown one breaking a TV that cost several hundred dollars while managing to stay intact.

Got a sweet storage unit last week. I spent a little more on it because I'm a sucker for 2 thinks; video games and records. This unit had the former.

For $180:

Boxed NES Sports set (complete)

PSPGo console (amazingly, with the charger)

~14 NES games, the best being Kid Icarus & Mike Tyson's Punch-Out

6 SNES games (Mario World & Paperboy 2 being the good ones)

A bunch of PS1 games, with FFIX, a few Crash Bandicoots, the first 2 Spyros, and RE3 in the mix

A few PS2 games, including a disc only copy of The Warriors.

2 Dualshock 3 controllers (red & black)

There was also a buttload of fantasy novels, a nice set of dressers, a pool cue I should get $100 for (heads up on pool cues, I've done well with Viking, McDermott, and Mali), and a bunch of CDs & DVDs.

The worst thing about this room was how it was packed. It was a 10x10 and it looked like they put everything in to it, and then added a 2" layer of clothes to the whole thing. Normally people just use bags...

Leaving the batteries inside to corrode can ruin pretty much anything. I cracked open the Wiimote Plus and saw a lot of corrosion built up over the LEDs and surrounding areas. Even cleaning it up didn't help, because it probably spread to the circuits.

Oh, battery corrosion, got it. I thought you were referring to a different kind of wear.

Slowdive asking for pics? Tch....

I've sold a few things, and others are already at the auction house, but I'll take a pic of the rest.

Edit: Instead of making another post right away, I'll just add it here. Like I said, some things have already sold, and others are sitting at the auction house. Dropped off a trailer-full today.

Might as well share a story. The auction house I consign at is about an hour and twenty minutes away. They're open 8am-1pm Saturday. Most of the times I plan on going I stay at my competitor/friend's house (they're much close to the auction house, and I don't trust leaving stuff on my trailer because of the house across the street). It's a husband/wife duo, he's been doing tree work forever, but they both enjoy storage auctions. So, I go there last night, and my buddy/rival wanted to show me some things he'd found. Walking around the barn he had games all over the place! Not a ton, mind you, but a couple here and there and everywhere. There was one tub, everything in it was absolutely vile looking, but it was all game stuff (a couple NESs, Mortal Kombat 3 for Saturn, and who knows what else. as I didn't want to touch it without gloves). That tub they'll most likely sell me. That's not the point of this story though...

I have to get my best buying-pitch together to get something else they have. I saw a Nintendo 64 10-game storage drawer. So, I walked over, opened it up and, wouldn't you know, it's full of games; 2x hologram Majora's Mask, gray cart Ocarina of Time, Kirby and the Crystal Shards, Glover, Buck Bumble, Harvest Moon 64, Mario 64, and two others I didn't bother looking at. Normally they sell me game stuff for a certain percentage of eBay/Amazon value. They seemed like they wanted to keep these though.
