Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

I'm next in line for the Deepdiscount refund. I really just wanted it for more trading cards...I was going to play on PS4 though there is cross save I believe.

I was notified of my Deepdiscount refund just now.  Not really a surprise.

I also just received my Gamestop order for the FE Special Edition.  It came sandwiched between two thin pieces of cardboard with no cushioning material and looks like it was used as a makeshift soccer ball at some point during the shipping and handling process.  While I understand that this is a depressingly common situation, I'm more than a little irked by the whole thing.  A bubble mailer would have been an improvement.  In future, if I have any other options (which I didn't in this case) I probably won't be purchasing a special edition from Gamestop.

 
Root Double Backerkit sent out with short response time to 02/29/2016. I think this is because PC version supposed to come out in March.

Good heavens I hope not. Losing their memories once is an unfortunate accident. Losing them TWICE is flat out carelessness.

Plus they had a job to do. Adol is only going to see them again when he is ready to ascend to Valhalla.

Still, "a mysterious cute girl is stronger and faster than the hero who has at least six world savings under his belt? If this were a western company I would be preparing torches, pitchforks, and rope. But the Japanese, thankfully, favor waifus over Mary Sue bullshit.

Today was a good day. Picked up my Hatsune Miku 3DS and it was the LE version, then when I checked the shelves they had one copy of Senran Kagura DD which I managed to price match to Amazon for $20

The classics are classics for a reason and everyone is so damn antsy about revisiting them that a series that hews to them is almost refreshing these days. Everyone else is overcome with fits of CREATIVITY so we get garbage endings like Dragon's Dogma.

But that's beside the point. Mary Sue bullshit is infuriating not because it's a tired trope but because it is incredibly stupid. Waifu shit is at least par and the Japanese seldom do it bad.

Persona 4 is the waifuiest of the waifushit ever and it's incredibly well-done.

Except for Marie who is trash and probably some of the worst of the waifushit.

I don't know where I was going, I got side tracked. Marie is shit.

 
Stella Glow and Project Mirai from best buy dotd were launch editions. And also terribly packed, even the one that came in a box.

My friend just got his package today, and one of the games had a spider wrap on it for some reason. :p

I guess they don't want UPS or USPS to steal the game during transit. :D

Bandai Namco will release the PlayStation 4 version of Summon Night 6: Lost Borders in English in Asia in May, the company announced.

I'm thinking of cancelling my Senran Kaguara pre-order for the PS4. I just have too many other priorities right now with games, and I'd imagine it will go the way of Onechanbara where you'll still be able to find launch copies at a discounted price months after release. I'm torn on what to do though as I want the game.

I cancelled my order for that exact reason. I've seen Shinovi Versus limited edition for around $20, too. I wouldn't sweat it.

I already have a copy, but I am curious where you found this for $20, because it seems to be either out of stock most places or selling at the regular price.

The video shows quite a bit of gameplay, and it looks absolutely fantastic.

Not a bad thing....if you're not going to play on release or if the game isn't a limited edition and you're on a budget (I am) pass on it till later. Heck I can guarantee Estival Versus both versions will go down in price eventually....likely down to $40 after a few months for the PS4....maybe even bottom out like Oneechanbara Z did. I mean heck if you passed on niche games earlier you could have had P4Dan Disco Fever for about $31 after GCU and Mirai DX and Stella Glow....

I know for March I just have The Division (kind of meh on it but at least 3 friends will be playing) and Trillion (this looks fun and a bit different than the usual Compile Hearts shlock). I may also get Estival Versus but I still need to play #2 and finish up more of Shinovi Versus.

Curious what you do in that situation. Do you cut the wire yourself? Or bring it into a store with your invoice to have them unlock it.

 
Summon Night 6 Asia English release....heck yes need to order that. Barely read that today...also when the heck is that Moe Crystal Play-Asia pre-order becoming active.

I'm not sure what they are made of but I'd be curious what would actually cut them. I've heard wire cutters will not do the job.

All the hype surrounding the Nintendo 3DS exclusive Fire Emblem Fates titles appears to have paid off, as the games have earned the best debut sales wise the series has seen.

 
BTW just my humble opinion but frankly the Fire Emblem Fates SE just kind of sucks honestly. The holder isn't too great, artbook is alright, really the main draw is the 1 cartridge for 3 sides. It's not worth paying an arm and a leg for and the most I would pay is about the MSRP of it.

For MSRP though it is a pretty damn good deal. No downloading the other games, it's just all on one glorious cart.

 
Conquest, Birthright, and Revelation on 1 cart for 63.99 is a pretty good deal imo.

If that wasnt a thing, I wouldnt had bothered with the SE. If they didnt offer the single cart but released Revelation in physical form, wouldve bought all 3 separate games. LOL
 
Hmm okay random question sorry, lol.  Are there any cute (as in like card captor sakura shōjo-ish type of cute?) English games that are not visual novels & not turn-based/fighting & not rhythm & not rpg where you'll have to put hundreds of hours into lol but rpgs around 100 hrs or so lol or even hack/slash/adventury types would be nice too. Seems like everything that I think I'd wanna play is turn-based =( lol

Fairy Bloom Freesia or Eryi's Action maybe? They're not super long, though. I'm not sure what could fit that bit.

Seems like Best Buy has a passion for crushing packages.

  • Persona 4 DAN shipped in a box (not sure how they managed to damage it, I'm amazed)
  • Hatsune Miku Project Mirai+Stella Glow shipped together in 1 bubble mailer (both were launch editions...ehhh)

Surprisingly, my fire emblem fate se arrived in a box undamaged.

 
Shinovi Versus did have cute parts but was surprisingly non cute with it's serious story and heated rivalries. I didn't really find it cute honestly, which is a surprise since it was relatively serious in its storytelling.

The game's serious story threw me for a loop the first time I played it. Minori's chapter was surprisingly emotional. Granted, a lot of the interactions are a bit jarring when people are sobbing while completely naked, but them committing to that story structure just made me respect the game even more.

oops sorry I meant rpg under 100 hrs... or heck even hack/slash/adventurey types is okay too lol do they even exist in english on consoles lol

If you wanted to open up to rhythm games Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove on 3DS is adorable. It's kind of simple and short though.

Having a hard time thinking of something that's cutesy without also being moe/fanservicey. Could you give some examples of something you liked that fit those criteria?

I don't recall exactly... maybe I'm mistaken. I could've sworn I saw it for that price. I remember regretting buying it at launch because I saw it for cheaper.

 
Anybody have a site with good translations of IA/VT menu/options? I tried googling it, but even the trophy guides don't have screenshots of the menus translated.

I kinda missed 90% of the tutorial and have no idea what to press when that spiral button thing comes up. Is it all the buttons? Thanks.
