Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

They clarify they aren't changing everything but Kitase, Nomura, and Nojima feel since they were involved with the original game that they have the liberty to add / change what they want while still making fans happy.
Well, I expect a canon Cloud x Sephiroth pairing to be the least offensive change in the game.

I just noticed Odin Sphere, Grand Kingdom, and Zero Time Dilemma are all coming out at the end of June. Was thinkin' I'd activate my 30-day Amazon prime trial to get the 20% discount on all 3. And 7th Dragon comes out in July. Might just throw that in too while the prime is active. Should work right? It should autoapply to existing preorders too? For once it'll be useful for everything to be coming out at once.

Does anyone know what happens if I apply a gift card to an order and then the order goes down in price(due to Prime), do I get my excess gift card amount back? I mean I should, but just checkin'.

Oh shoot Odin Sphere is June 7, and 7th Dragon is July 12th. Hmm...But if it works on new releases(within 2 weeks), maybe I can activate on June 13th, and do a price adjustment?
Unless you don't want to use pre-orders, you might as well just start the trial now and order them all today. Amazon doesn't charge until it ships, and the discount and shipping bonuses of Prime apply when you order, not when it is released. As for the price guarantee, if it does drop, between now and release, you'd only be charged the lower cost when it ships, so there's no issue with a "refund". Also, since you are using prime, you might as well do it with four separate orders, since you don't need to meet the FSSS minimum; less hassle if you need to cancel one.

Are the idolmaster games pretty import friendly? I'm considering pre-ordering the new PS4 one. I get that I wouldn't understand most of the management storyline stuff, but can you blindly progress through it and just do rhythm gameplay or is that not really an option?

Kind of the same question about Dream Club Zero Portable on Vita, but I think I know the answer already for that one - it seems to be heavier on interaction choices than rhythm gameplay.

Dream Club Zero is harder to play. There isnt really a guide to go on.

The rhythm portion is import friendly. I played Idolmaster 2 and it is generally import friendly. There is an in depth guide online that is very helpful. At first, itll be a bit hard to understand what is going on at first but youll get the hang of it.

Thanks. I also meant to ask about the Love Live games on Vita - looks like those are pretty easy straightforward like (or even more so than) idolmaster?

Does Dream Club Zero require you to play story mode content to unlock songs or characters or anything? Or can you just start up the game and just choose to play the rhythm game? Or is it kind of like Persona 4: DAN where rhythm elements are sprinkled throughout the story?

The rhythm portion im talking about is for Idolmaster. Idolmaster is an Idol Sim with Rhythm Portions and Mini Games. Love Love Vita is a straight up rhythm game.

Dream Club Zero isnt much of a Rhyhm Game. It is a Dating Sim with a mini games. The only rhythm portion to it is the Karoake segments.

Will get Blanc vs Zombies for $15 later like I do every Neptunia title. They are decent enough but I know they drop quickly and IFI aka iffy (hah) quality. Does look alright though but that game crowd for 3D slash em ups is pretty filled in my backlog including Neptunia U.

I know it's not in English, but are you aware that you could import the PS3 version of Phantom Breaker Extra about $20-30 on Amazon/Ebay? I would agree with you but PB already exists in a physical format, whereas Battlegrounds got screwed out of a physical release. Damn Japan, releasing a retail version with just a downloadable code, just like Minecraft Vita. >.>
I guess you didn't check my point that I already got it digitally on PS3? >.>

Yes, I know what I meant. I'd rather get it physically on X360 though. <.<

Did kiss x sis ever go anywhere? Or did it stay in the will they/won't They territory?
Manga still goes and goes....guy has been with his teacher but doubt it will work. I think eventually he will be like hell I'll be with both and never be married, but pretty much it's hinting that he still might go for his sisters. Just piddling around really.

Are we still doing the monthly backlog game? I liked that idea and I definitely need encouragement to tackle my ridiculous backlog.

I'd really love to, but the problem is I don't really know where to start. I saw a few posts about SAO: Re, but the last thing I want to do is encourage a game that I have and exclude others who don't have it, out of it. I was waiting for a few suggestions, but I guess I could put a few into the box. There's two PS3 games I haven't even opened yet, Kingdom Hearts 1.5, and Drakengard 3, also a bunch of Vita games, Steins Gate, Muramasa, Danganronpa. And of course SAO: RE for PS4, and Onechanbara. And maybe Bastion?

I also have a few suggestions for the discussion thing. I don't really use other forums like Reddit, and I have never checked the CAG forums outside of the Deals Section. But I figured we could put the Backlog discussion thread in one of the other subforums, so everyone has easy access to it. We can designate the game of the month in the first post, and have like a Wall of Fame thing (Like I do for the BBC thread) where we give accolades to whoever finishes the game, or platinums it or whatever. Would also be cool to have like a "history" section.

I also think we should put spoiler tags when discussing the plot. We can also post other cool stuff about the series, like if it was Sword Art Online Re, share some cool fanart or cosplay. Of course, that will be in addition to discussing the game, talking about it's plot, giving tips on levels/bosses/what to avoid, making jokes, criticizing the game's flaws, encouraging one another to stick with the game even through the hard times, and lastly, recommend what other games to go on from there (sequels/similar genres.)

One thing though is that I realize not everyone has the same gaming platforms, (I only own PS ones) so I'd hate to exclude others, and have them wait an entire month just to maybe have a chance at the backlog thing again. Same for people who might not have that particular game. I was thinking of doing one section for each of the new platforms, and maybe that will open up more choices and additional games. The problem is, is that it might get a bit messy.

Anyway, I'm always up for more suggestions, you guys can even tell me it's an awful idea and I'm an idiot, and I'll shut up and go back to lurking. Thanks for reading!

I think that sounds good! We could look for games that are on multiple platforms even the PS exclusives tend to be on multiple PS consoles, just a thought.

I already have some stuff on preorder that I was hopin' to get adjusted when the time comes. Can't cancel my ZTD watch preorder after all.

This is the Japanese niche thread. No one here has an Xbone.

Around here, popularity is like PS3 > Vita > 3DS > PS4 > everything else.

We can always do one per Sony system per month, and people can choose.

I also have KH 1.5 that I never played. Been meaning to go back to Steins;Gate. Left it off at Ch 3.

I must be in the wrong place.

Oh yeah, there was another idea I had. I see a lot of amazing first impressions/reviews by Elessar, Draekon, Sovereign, and things like reviews of soundtracks and stuff. Some of these reviews are better than what I read on sites like IGN and stuff, but they get drowned out by newer posts. I would love to post them with spoiler tags on the first post of the Backlog thread, so that others can get a feel for the game before they play. Or maybe if anyone in the future would use the thread as a way to search for games to buy/play, they can always reference those reviews. It would also be cool to have a poll for our opinion of the game's rating, at the end of the month, and put it up as well.

Therealdeal19 had a great idea that I didn't even think of, there's a ton of multiplatform niche games, Senran Kagura, Virtues Last Reward, Conception 2, Arc Sys fighters, etc. It would probably fit more people to consider some of these, or at least ones on all PS platforms. I guess Neptunia/Atelier Remakes and Originals could also fall under one category, as well as things like remasters, FFX, Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil, and the 17 versions of FF7.
