So I saw the video of the Giant Bomb review and I heard him say something along the lines of when you aim the character pops up allowing your character to take fire from all sides, and therefore calls it a bad cover system.

Now from all the games I've played that feature cover based shooting, I'm pretty sure this is always the case. The idea of cover based is you're hiding in cover to protect yourself but when you decide to aim and shoot, you risk yourself getting shot from any direction.

Is there a game that I might have missed that this is not the case? How is QB any different?
 
Honestly, anything that Gerstmann says about a game, especially a heavily story-based one, needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt.  This is the same guy that called Shenmue "a fucking bullshit forklift simulator for assholes."

So after each wave of enemies. And then shooting Paul he will put these giant pulse bombs on the ground. You just have to use the LB run to head across the room to find some cover. It's just hard when your fighting enemies and he is doing it. I would just use the dash and sprint as much as possible and do the takedowns to thin the ranks

Man what the heck. Finally got past the 2nd wave and its like the whole room blew up... again. So I can actually take cover from that blast? I thought I just had to run

Yup, sprint to the other side of the room to the biggest cover you can find, the debris and blast will be blocked

I think what his issue is there is no blind fire. With that said, he does say he does not understand why his guy pops up when aiming which is exactly how all cover shooters work. The biggest difference is that QB is not a cover based shooter so if you just stand there not using your powers of course guys are just going to shoot you. I think the best take home message is that the 2/5 score should be taken with an iceberg sized piece of salt. There are 50+ reviews that give QB an 8 or above.

finally finished quantum break, i've been putting off the final act since thursday

sorry but i think it is just a  silly time bending simulator, isn't every game that we don't like some kind of "simulator" these days?

remedy should've focused on alan wake 2, the only thing unique about this game is the live action show and i think it would've been better instead with shorter cut scenes

Just kidding. At least you can trade it in and recoup some of your cash since you finished it so fast. I'm waiting for Best Buy to add a trade value and in it goes. I actually really enjoyed the little show, and I loved the game more the more pieces of narrative or intel I found. To each their own though. I finished the Halo 5 campaign and played one match online... traded that sucker in the next day lol

You indeed missed the point of what I'm saying. Giving 1s, 2s, or 3s basically means the game is broken, not fun, absolutely unimaginative and disappointing in just about any way. Big Rigs, Ride To Hell, that kind of material. Where the game's basic functions don't work, where there's basically no qualities or well done parts, just stupid stuff all around. By all means, if I were to find Quantum Break boring, it would not get a very positive rating (by my standards, 6 is the lowest "good" grade, anything below is just shades of bad, anything above is better and better with 10 aiming for perfection), but I don't think it would get less than 5-6. Why? Because from what I see, the game gets graphics, sounds, functionality, style, etc. just right. Movies and music are a different media than videogames, because there you only have to play by the rules, whereas when creating a videogame you have to BUILD the rules: impose physics, collisions, gravity, animations, sounds, and thousands more things. It is important to judge every aspect of the game because of this, as I like to go for a virtual average, maybe adding or taking 1-2 grades at most. If a game functions absolutely perfectly, looks gorgeous, sounds like I'm in the battlefield with the protagonist, has shitloads of content, etc.... I can't just skim past all of that. That does NOT mean I will give it a 9-10 by default, which is a rating I barely give (in my past 100 reviews or so I believe I gave 9 or above four times), but that I would perhaps give it 5-6 pointing out the many qualities, despite the fact that it bored me quickly. Again, for me, stuff below 5 is simply fundamentally broken, games that barely even constitute as games because they don't really have any fun in it and the main game elements are simply not working or horribly designed and untested. By all means, from what I saw, that is not the case for Quantum Break, which seems to be one of the better expressions of the genre it's representing.

Which, by the way, is another point to consider when reviewing something: the competition. When you review the latest Street Fighter, you gotta consider what the other competitive fighters are doing for a 360 degrees analysis, and you probably shouldn't compare it to an Assassin's Creed or a Forza game in terms of graphics, content and variety, because they have nothing to do with that. Quantum Break (or any game) should be rated in its own context, which is linear narrative, third person action game. Again, did not play it, but from what I saw it looks like a pretty damn solid entry in that genre, and I have to consider the competition's state too. If I were to point out "you mostly just shoot" as a minus, clearly I am not familiar or am no way a fan of said genre, and the review would be wasted on me. I know for a fact I would get bored by, say, Kingdom Hearts 3 long before the end, because I've never been a fan of the saga and most JRPGs also leave me uninterested. Therefore, I believe it would be dumb for me to jump on the review, and criticize aspects all RPGs and JRPGs have to justify a ridiculously low rating. By all means, as a user, I can do this: I could jump on Metacritic and give in 1.0. Sue me, right? But as a professional reviewer one has to balance the good aspects and the bad aspects, and whether you like it or not, the technical side (not just the looks but the actual functionality) takes up a good part.

So no, I would not sell my rating for a triple-A game. If something's a broken mess (see Unity), it deserves to be downrated. On the other hand, if something looks and sounds gorgeous, functions perfectly, has a solid narrative and a generally very well balanced gameplay with fluid movement system and innovative game ideas, well... even if I am bored after 3 missions, all those aspects have to count for something, avoiding the lowest ratings that, again, go for absolute turds of a game that are broken, unimaginative, ugly, badly designed messes.

 
I kind of enjoy watching Jeff Gerstmann videos on giantbomb now and then. I don't think I have ever read any of his game reviews though. I like his sense of humor and his years of gaming experience gives him some interesting insights when he is just goofing off in a game. I do love to watch Yahtzee reviews. He is extremely harsh most of the time and his bias is way different than mine for games, but I get a kick out of his humor.

My process on deciding if a game is worth getting. When reading a review you need to make note of the "opinion" part and just take in the facts about the game (if there are any).  If there are legit complaints about bugs and game play mechanics I appreciate the warning. To get a feel for a game I tend to watch gameplay videos or go to metacritic just to get an idea. I also like to hear opinions from every day gamers like members on this site.  I picked up Elite Dangerous when it was on sale recently following the process I just described.

In the end all that matters is you enjoyed the game in my opinion.

I agree with the other poster's comments, re: value of SP in context of the main game ($60 for 2-3 years of development, $30 for a SP that may extend gameplay by 4-5 hours and took a few months (?) to develop). However, I think we're all aware that $30 for a SP is not going to get us $30 worth of what the main game ($60) gave us, just likely extend the gameplay. The Rise of the Tomb Raider Season Pass, having played all three DLCs, is not worth $30. I paid $15 for it and felt that was a reasonable value (thru the Microsoft Employee Storefront). Including more of the outfit DLC may have helped increase the perceived value, since there are still quite a few you have to purchase separately, but even then $30 is quite a bit. I have to imagine they'll be a complete edition, either digitally or physically, by years' end.

I agree, find reviewers who tend to be into the types of games you are. Don't blindly follow their word as good/bad, but know that everyone is opinionated.

I would say, also check the other side of the conversation too. If X reviewer pointed out a game problem, but everyone was so hype they lost their shit (dark souls 2, a lot of people have reviewed and admitted they got lost in the hype). Just be sceptical, and keep your tolerance in check.

I can list dozens of games that were universally hated, but that has no impact on me liking it. Eh, to each their own.

I think part of the problem some are having with review scores is that most reviewers use the scale like Badoy mentions above where a 6 is his lowest good score - like grades from school everyone is used to. F == 50, D == 60, C == 70, B == 80, and A == 90. A few reviewers use the full scale, and they happen to be polarizing because of that. Like Jim Sterling and Jeff Gertsmann. If Jim doesn't like a game at all he will give a 2.0. Others that feel mostly the same dislike for the game would probably give it like between a 5 and 6. Metacritic then aggregates it with the rest of the scores, weighted exactly the same as the others, and it effects the overall score more profoundly and people freak out. If he gave it the 5 to 6, people would probably accept it better.

And with a 5 point scale, they already are using the full scale. If 1 == 20, 2 == 40, etc., they could never give a score below 3 without the reaction we are getting now. With a 5 point scale, if you want to compare it to other scores, I believe you should weight it something like 1 == 55, 2 == 65, 3 == 75, 4 == 85, 5 == 95 (Bad, Okay, Good, Great, Excellent). Metacritic should do something like that because as of right now they are aggregating apples and oranges.

Personally, if I'm going to look at reviews, I like reading outliers, why someone loved it, why someone hated it. I'll actually read the reviews, don't really give a shit about the scores themselves. Gravitate towards reviewers that I got good info from before. I have liked games that were universally panned and vice versa. I have read reviews where they gave a negative score but after reading the review was more likely to buy the game.

Weird question

Has the BC games on the XB1 improved at all?
I was playing them back during the beta, and around the release, and they all seemed to look hazy, with many frame rate problems.

Games like Mass Effect and Nuts & Bolts were the most notable on these problems.

Has BC quality improved since then, or should I continue using my 360 digital?

I guess they already did their lego sale though so prolly makes sense

Probably just varies by game... Lately I've played Alan Wake, Deus Ex, Lego Star Wars, and various XBLA games and they've all been perfect.
 
Started Valiant Hearts tonight.  I am definitely glad I started it.  I think I needed a chill game with some actual depth of story.  Even if centers around actual deaths.

Went to Family Dollar today, my stuff came to $2.13. At first I gave the guy $3, then I found a quarter after he opened register so Im like here, let me get a $1 bill back. He then proceeded to pull out a calculator.

As someone who has worked a register for retail before, it's much easier said that done. When you've been making change for the past eight hours and your mind is numb and dull, you would rather just grab a calculator than try to jump start your brain again.

I work in a bank and there are days where that transaction would temporarily cripple me. Sometimes counting money all day just takes its toll. I would, however, tell the customer why I am coming across like an idiot and share a self-deprecating anecdote. Standing there like a tree and punching it into the calculator without a word just makes the whole thing worse.

It's a very good game. If you're into the history of that period, definitely search for all the collectibles (or use a guide after beating it) to get more information on the war/soldiers' lives in that period.

Getting away from all this review talk, has anyone played Alice: Madness Returns here? I started and I don't know if I'm going to ever finish it because that game is just fuck ed up and batshit insane.
