Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Well, I played through the Grand Kingdom Lite Demo thing and I enjoy the combat far more than I thought I would. Not sure how I feel about the online aspect of it and hope they have systems in place to try and make sure balance exists when fighting in the 'War' as you're matched up against other players squads under AI control. Enough levels and the battle will be sided against you, which kind of sucks. It's a nice way to gain a little extra experience and money though.

I'm pretty harsh on Iffy games nowadays.

Only thing I don't judge harshly are Etrian Odyssey main-line games.
Etrian Odyssey is one of the most consistent game series easily. You go in and know what to expect immediately. Not a lot changes but what is there is DRPG goodness. I gladly support those games too.

IfI games are usually iffy to me and with Trillion really going down badly with me, I will no longer buy their games on release unless I really want the series. Too many cash grabs IMHO.

Compile Hearts games are similar.....I do enjoy the monster games like monster monpiece and moe chronicles and can't wait till asia release of moe crystal, but most of the other games become easy passes at first.

I just don't pre-order stuff that often anymore unless it's been out in Japan for a while and I know what it's like, or it's a Vita game I want since print runs seem to not be as much these days.

Another thought: Nintendo could generate some much-needed good will by developing and selling something akin to the Retron5 that plays cartridges and discs from multiple old systems.  Like a system that plays NES, SNES, GBA, and N64 games.  They could make even more profit on hardware sales.   Now how hard would that be?  You're simply copying an idea that already exists, slapping your brand name on it, and getting many more sales than the generic system has had.  Something that would solve one of the biggest problems with Nintendo ownership which is having too many cords and plastic sitting around and not enough inputs on the television. It would be a much-appreciated love letter to the fans.

Moero Crystal really does need to come out soon, I've almost bought the Japanese version, but then I'd lose all the ridiculous fun of the story. I really like that series, too. I'm curious what it's going to be like when it's set up like a Nep Nep game. Probably not so different tbh, which is fine with me. ...I'm not very hard to please, obviously. Lol.

well that is true especially has more entitled generations come about,

Look I get that in the 80s ppl had limited options for gaming, but we're way past that now. If a company wants my attention and more importantly my money, they need to deliver. Your own post mentions how many gaming options we have now. Nintendo is stuck doing Nintendo things for Nintendos sake in a very unapologetic fashion. I hate to say it but MS stepped up after the XB1 shit launch & they've been TRYING to do right, They acknowledged they fucked up & have been doing better. Nintendo hasn't even acknowledged their fuck ups... You have Miyamoto basically telling gamers to gitgud because the controls on Star Fox are so fucked up..

Definitely seems to be a trend. People tend to devour any niche Japanese game that comes over here. And I get being into that stuff and wanting to play those titles, but it doesn't mean we have to ignore faults or pretend that mediocre games are awesome. It's a double edged sword, though, because we want to encourage that market so we get more of them. But, by doing so, we are also sending a message that we don't actually care whether the games are good or not.
I actually think it's the complete opposite in this thread nowadays. You've seen me and Motaku tell everyone to rethink on DoAX3, and of course a lot of backlash on Trillion and as you said, Nights of Azure. Even Digimon Cyber Sleuth, Corpse Party, and Aegis of Earth has had complaints. And a few older titles like Akiba's Trip, Nactural Doctrine, Omega Quintet, etc. has had bad reps dating back to their release.

Yeah what is going on with this? I am hoping atleast by June....

^This. 100%.

This thread had definitely started taking a turn, which is great, but there is also a market outside of the 15 people that post in here. :3

I think you forget a lot of people buy the CE's of these games and never play them.

I play most of the ones I buy, and for the most part I enjoy them. They may not have the quality of AAA games, but I've gotten tired of most AAA games with how similar they are to each other. I'm bored of all the open world games and I'm bored of all the shooters. They're all so similar I'm at the point where I'd rather play some potentially mediocre niche games because there's the chance they'll at least give me an experience that isn't go accept a mission>collect/kill a few things>go back and turn in the mission. Or the other option, shoot all the things in this area>walk to the next area and shoot those guys>go to the next area and do that again. Frankly, with that being the majority of what we've gotten over the past few years, I'm losing interest in gaming aside from a few specific franchises.

I agree. The popular market is extremely bland right now. That's also why I appreciate and prefer the more niche games. I just want them to be interesting and different without being crappy and mediocre. I don't think those two things have to be mutually exclusive. Haha

And you're right, I don't take that first point into mind. I stopped buying CEs a couple of years ago, sold all of mine, and never looked back. Even when I was, though, I was only buying CEs for games that I thought looked good and worth playing, so I can only loosely understand that mindset.

Even the niche titles are tiring. I don't play them, but aren't we up to five nep and tales games every year now? Shit's worse than CoD.

Yeah, but at least all the Nep game spinoffs are in different genre and styles. There's even talk of a Nep fighting game. That's like having a CoD puzzle game.

You need to learn to appreciate collecting dandelions & beaver pelts. They play a vital role in making leather scraps which you'll eventually need to make the leather for your holster, otherwise how would you ever get one? Buying it from an NPC? pish posh!

I'm really confused why it was made. Guess we're just in the month of online shooters that don't have campaigns.

Another thing in gaming I'm getting tired of.

Big business has a lot to do with most everything that has been mentioned today.  Video game companies are now making money through business plans, then they create the games around that financial structure.  The product comes later as an afterthought to the grand design for improving company valuation and raising the stock price.  It's not about the games anymore.

and yes, we are all entitled.  We have more to choose from than ever before.  Indie gaming has been in-stride for nearly a decade.  There is just so much to choose from that there is also so little to gravitate towards. No single franchise carries much weight.  Gamers are fickle.  We're all caught up with what's coming out next.  What can I buy on sale tomorrow?  They're all by-products of the internet age.   Public interest wanes as fast as the speed of information spreads news.   Everyone is hoping to latch on to something new, something different.  That's why Limited Run Games and Kickstarter have been so popular lately; they scratch a lot of those itches.

Umbrella Corps will likely be terrible, but I still wanna play it.

I remember Operation Raccoon City being pretty bad, but had lots of fun with it at the same time.  The whole digital-only aspect of this game is annoying though, but oh well.

Is this a tablet / smartphone game? The gameplay looks like it.
I think it's for PC currently, and then depending on how well that does, they'll visit some console options. They would probably get more funding with more options, but I understand going the PC route first.

If you pledge $23 or more, you get a digital copy of the game for PS4 or Xbox One. So yeah I guess there is some incentive there, but I think it would make a pretty cool Vita game. I always see games like this and think that, though. But then we get Tennis in Your Face or whatever... I really wish Sony would've backed and pushed as much stuff like they did for Severed, which has been received wonderfully. but I don't know still don't have it. Sorry to be so off-topic...

It's apparently very hard, since the Retron 5 is a mess. I'm all for giving Nintendo shit for things like not releasing a DS Player add-on for the WiiU, but expecting them to solve the biggest problem with long term gaming (and do it badly) is too much.

I'm serious about that DS Player, Nintendo. I WANT to give you money, make it happen.

Yeah we'd all kill for a new Super Gameboy for the 3DS. That has been atop my want list for the last decade. But that seems the least likeliest to happen since they make so much money off selling 3DS hardware.

I really don't think the device I was referring to would make them lose much virtual shop revenue. People either have the cartridge games already or they don't. If they don't, the digital versions are cheaper.

A Nep fighter would be awesome i just hope its on a 2D plane like sf or kof, or a party fighter like smash bros and not like naruto & jstars.

I'm with you. I platinumed Moe Chronicle months ago and have been itching for them to release Crystal. I only hope they do like last time and finally open the pre-ordering around May 25th.

I'll play Umbrella Corps eventually. Operation Raccoon City was worth every penny of the $8 I paid for it. I didn't buy the 2 DLC campaign packs though, especially since it was something like $10 each. I heard the DLC was practically as long as the main story. Kind of sucks, knowing Capcom purposely left it off the disc to rake in extra cash (the main campaign was freaking short too).

Oh well, I typically never pay more than $10 for an RE title, or any Capcom title for that matter.

So uh, what's the consensus on Bravely Second?
If you liked the gameplay of the first one, it's pretty much identical with just a few new classes. I feel that Magnolia and Edea have a pretty good synergy going between their characters. The MC is an idiot, like they frequently are in just about every game.

What I don't like is the lore regarding jobs because of the sidequest system. Plus the sidequests I feel are just a way to bring back old characters for the sake of them being there. Also the sidequest choices are pretty stupid as well. It's often like "Well, I agree with this side... but fuck that the side I agree with because I want their job." You can go back and obtain the other job later in the game, but still I wish they could have pulled them off better. Oh and they completely overplay jokes to the point where it can get pretty grating at times. If it's a NA/EU only thing, then fuck you whoever translated it and decided to add in this endless abuse of overplayed jokes.

I'm about halfway through but took a break to level my town and crap up. Which is done as of today, so I should get back into it again soon. Especially since I stalled Sword of Stranger City pretty much since they drop kicked us in the balls with the 'enhanced' edition announcement right after the western release.

But you do like playing them don't you?

What about buying games in the core series at launch? (RE5, RE6, ect.)

Without sales near launch for the core games, thats how a franchise dies. No revenue, no more franchise.

If the game sucks (Operation Raccoon City) then yeah, vote with your wallet and skip it. But if the game was good (is good, getting good reviews) support them by picking it up new. Or else, yeah. No more games for that franchise.

I pity everyone that bought RE 5&6 at launch.

RE4 wasn't a good of a campaign as RE4 was but the online co-op was fun. Plus Mercenaries was addictive as hell. RE6 was whatever. 5 was fun.

Woohoo Persona!

Nintendo can go fudge themselves with Zelda. I'm done. I vaguely remember them hyping up skyward sword in a similar fashion saying how it was going to be different. Well it was same as all the old ones. A 3 then 7 dungeon design and a magic mode of transportation. I'm done with it...unless they make a Zelda bloodborne hybrid.
