Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Blame Sony fans and PC gamers. They forced Microsoft's hand. All those "720pbox One" jokes and scathing articles about the Ones performance and hardware from various media outlets since 2013 have led us here. It is what it is. At least we know the new system will be backwards compatible with the 360 and One.

Yeah, it's not Microsoft's fault that they created the Xbox One to be the machine that it currently is.

No one's absolving MS of the Ones shortcomings. However, you can't deny that this gen has definitely been defined by one thing...power. It used to be all about games and exclusives. If it was still about that, MS would be right there with Sony this gen in sales. The PC and Sony crowd turned that narrative on its head a few years back. Go into any...oh, say...IGN article about anything Microsoft related and tell me what the most often lobbied criticism against it is.

Except it hasn't. It's been the games and the marketing like every other generation. Microsoft completed messed up the marketing from day one as they failed to present a product that their audience wanted with a focus on a set-top cable box replacement that was also a digital-focused console when the former market is moving towards cable cutting services like Netflix, Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, etc. while the latter isn't ready to abandon physical games just yet, especially as retailers are fighting tooth and nail to keep their customers away from the digital gaming services. Add in the price coming in at $500 with a new Kinect that still didn't work as originally intended back at the Project Natal reveal, an esoteric approach to self-publishing for independent developers, and many, many PR blunders and it's no wonder that they fell short to a revitalized Sony that was able to take everything they learned from the PS3 to create the affordable machine, developer-friendly environment, and a powerful PR plan that won everybody over.

To say it's only the raw power of the devices that kept the Xbox One from success is a gross misunderstanding of everything that happened in 2013.

And to me that's a load of shit. I have both a PS4 and an Xbox One and with the exception of exclusives, I still get the vast majority of games on X1. I just like it.

I could care less about a usually negligible difference in the way a game looks and whether a game is 720p or 1080P. Performance is almost always just as good on X1.

If there was a huge difference where a game looked like they do on a 360 vs a PS4, that would be a different story.

I may be in the minority but I play cross platform games on my X1 by choice (except when something is cheaper, of course, on PS4).

Clearly all they have to do, is wait for the new PS4 specs, and then make the new Xbox one notch higher in every little thing, problem solved! But seriously it really should be about games.

A notch isn't enough. The same source that leaked the plans to Kotaku and Polygon is claiming MS is aiming for 6 tflops with the Scorpio. They must have some super saiyan technology no one knows about if they are serious about pulling that off.

Excited to hear about Kinect 3.0 and always online and digital only.

Dead light is decent only takes about 2 hours to beat. All you folks who got it on gwg and never played I say give it ago.
But what about the other 60+ games that I got free and haven't played?

I did a check not too long ago and my 360 GwG play count was 17/83. It forced me to play Defense Grid and Assassins Creed 2. Defense Grid is amazing and AC2 was alright too. I forgot what's next on my GwG plate but I'm going in order and I'm still towards the beginning.

#dealwithit

Seriously though, just finished Batman Arkham Knight. Loved it so much I'm going for the 100% complete. Is the season pass worth $20? Wasn't it on sale at one point and time?
I loved Arkham Knight very much but the idea of finishing all that riddler stuff gives me the runs

Let me clarify - all side missions EXCEPT for the Riddler collectibles. This ain't an AssCreed game hunting down feathers. Eff that. Just watched the 100% complete final ending so I'm good

I originally posted this in the Xbox discussion thread:
A lot of interesting Xbox (controlled?) leaks today.

- $99 Xbox branded streaming stick (chromecast, fire stick)
- $150 Xbox TV (roku, apple tv)
- Xbox Slim releasing in August (40% smaller than the Xbox One)
- Xbox (Two) code named "Scorpio" releasing in fall 2017 supposed to be greater than 4x the power of the Xbox One which is 1.2 tflop, they are aiming for 5 - 6 tflop (for comparison PS4 is 1.8 tflop and PS4 Neo is rumored to be 2.3 - 2.5x the power so 4.2 - 4.5 tflop and releasing this fall, 1 year earlier)
- Revised Xbox One controler with minimal changes including a flatter dpad and flatter thumbsticks (included with the slim)

On gaf it is being reported that Microsoft didn't want to launch the Scorpio this soon but are reacting to Sony's Neo, they were caught off guard again and that is why it'll be a year late to the party. Should be interesting especially if it is greater than a tflop more powerful.

Thanks Sony for killing the 10 year console life cycle. I could care less about 2K resolution but if this has any negative effect on game development for the current gen, I think I will dump console gaming

Edit: referring to the rumor that MS is launching the new console earlier to counter the Neo.

Never had an issue with the X1 size. I just hope making it smaller does not increase failure rates. My PS4 sounds like a jet engine while playing Uncharted 4.
My thoughts exactly. The huge vents on this thing make it purr like a kitten instead of a leafblower. The real interesting thing is the 4x more powerful one reportedly in the works. I wonder how much that's gonna cost. Are they offering any trade-in program? Also it better still have a port for the Kinect for those of us that have one.

Agreed. They had great momentum from the 360 and then they not only dropped the ball, they fed the ball to an alligator which Don Mattrick killed and then used to make a fancy set of boots. On the plus side, we now have Phil.

LOL. Yeah, it's not MS's fault at all.

You must be a millenial. You're entitled to everything but take responsibility for nothing.

So ninja turtles any good?
Um, it's very arcade style and really wants you to play it MP.

The game is a mostly open structure where you're on a large level map and are given calls about even happening like a robbery, or etc.
You go there, do whatever the mission says and a bar at the top gradually fills. When the bar at the top is full, you then fight a boss.

Sadly the bosses are told to you when you select the level, since they are named after the bosses. It's very much a pick up and play type of game.

So far the levels are Bebop in the city, Rocksteady in the subway, Slash in the sewers, etc etc. All follow the same formula of having to draw them out, and also there are no over the top platinum moments yet.. unlike Devastation.

Microsoft would win E3 if they hired Don Mattrick to come out and do the Scorpio announcement. Ultimate trolling of the Internet from Microsoft.

Phil Spencer started the conversation about three months ago:

"We look at these other ecosystems out there like mobile, tablet and PC and we see that they have a very continuous evolution cycle in hardware, whereas between console generations most of the evolution is making it cheaper and potentially making it smaller.

Both are meaningful but don't make the games play any better. If you look at PC specifically and see the evolution that happens there, there's no reason why console can't ride that same curve.

I look at the ecosystem that a console sits in and I think that it should have the capability of more iteration on hardware capability. Sony is doing this with VR and adding VR capabilities mid-cycle to the PlayStation 4 and they are doing that by adding another box. I don't mean that as a negative. But it's not changing what the core console is about.

For consoles in general it's more important now than it's ever been, because you have so many of these other platforms that are around. It used to be that when you bought your console you were way ahead of the price performance curve by so much, relative to a PC. But now PCs are inexpensive and your phones are getting more and more capable.

I still think a console is the best price to performance deal that is out there but when you look at the evolution ... I'm not going to announce our road map for hardware ... but what I wanted to say on stage for people when they see this vision of ours and question our commitment to console I want to make sure that people see that what we are doing enables us to be more committed to what consoles are about than we've ever been and innovate more consistently than we ever have. That's the key for me."
I have far more faith in Microsoft and Sony to handle the transition to a more iterative model than Apple or Google, who allow developers to release updates to block customers from playing the games they've purchased because neither cares about their customers on previous hardware from a gaming perspective. Microsoft and Sony do have a vested interest in keeping their customers happy so they'll keep spending money by putting in specified rules to keep developers from shirking the early adopters.

One has to wonder if Phil brought all that to light because they caught wind of Sony's plans and decided to get in front of it and steal some of the thunder.  I believe it was only a week or 2 later that all the Neo leaks started happening.  And if the rumors are true that the Scorpio is a year behind, then they definitely weren't leading the charge on the iterations.

I don't care how long a console cycle is. When a new one comes out, I'll wait until something I want comes out on it and buy it. Spoils of being a well paid adult, I guess. :)

Well second place XBox means I can't wait to pick up the XBox Two when it gets marked down to shit and comes with five games and a gift card! Lesson learned!

LOL. Yeah, it's not MS's fault at all.

Also there tends to be an echo chamber here on the internet with specialized forums. I can imagine you'd have a tough time finding IRL folks that really do care about this stuff. I know more people that have xbox ones than PS4, not a single one of them care about the stuff people bicker about on these forums.

And having both, the difference is pretty insignificant most of the time. PC gaming is where you really notice the difference.

Console life cycle is COMMONLY 5-6yrs...

The 10yr was a mistake during the 7th gen and caused interest to wane, and profits to drop.

Thats just it, its all being designed around UWP (Universal Windows Platform) so this will not be like previous generations where developers have to learn how to develop on a new system and start brand new games from scratch for the new hardware. Its basically the same system, it will just be more powerful. And best of all, with this new system, there will be no more need for backwards compatibility. All previous games will work on all new hardware, natively. So consoles will finally join the ranks of PC gamers in regard to you buy a game once and you can continue to play it for as long as you want, regardless of what new hardware you get in the future. So the new XBox console isn't going to set back developers. They can just continue on as they have been, with the same set of tools that they have been using. They will just have more power to play with to give better textures, better frame rates, etc. And the developers that are just starting to develop a new game, like CD Projekt RED with Cyberpunk 2077 will have a VASTLY more powerful system with which to develop it on.

No more having to keep the previous generations hardware to be able to play the previous generations games or no more need for backwards compatibility. You can just get rid of your old console, keep all the games and keep moving forward buying new games. Again, just like PC gamers have had it all along. As a gamer that keeps all his old games, I find what Xbox is doing to be VERY exciting stuff!!

Honestly, that last bit makes me think that you have a gross misunderstanding of everything that took place that year because Sony had a practically 100% identical platform as MS did and it was MS's horrid reception at the Xbox One reveal that made Sony run back to the drawing board and change everything at the very last minute. Had Sony gone first instead of MS, we would have seen the exact opposite thing happen. The PS4 would have been laughed off the stage and MS would have ran back to the drawing board and changed everything last minute for the Xbox One reveal. Sony didn't have a brilliant PR plan, they were simply lucky that MS decided to go first.

And what is this talk of keeping Xbox One from success? Xbox One has broken every record in the book for MS and the Xbox brand and has even outsold the Xbox 360 up to this point, at the same point in its lifespan. The Xbox One has been a big success thus far, its just not as big of a success as the PS4. Again, its outselling the 360 and that became one of the best selling consoles of all time. This idea that the Xbox One has been some sort of failure is a fallacy and couldn't be farther from the truth. Xbox One had a bad launch and struggled in the beginning but as soon as Phil Spencer came on board, that all turned around and its been doing great ever since. Based on your logic, both the PS3 and Xbox 360 were basically failures for the vast majority of thier lifespans since the Wii trounced both of them in regards to hardware sales. In fact, it wasn't even close the first 3-4 years. The Wii came out of nowhere and just trounced both Sony and MS. Yet amazingly the PS3 and the 360 are now regarded as 2 of the most successful consoles of all time.

I don't know why, but there seems to be a serious shortage of logic and common sense when people start discussing the console markets.

I know a lot more people that own PS4's but I know exactly what you mean.

I wonder if they are making Scorpio so powerful because they would like it to run Rift or VIVE VR headsets. I thought I remembered a while ago MS saying something about using the Rift on your PC to play Xbox games in VR, but this would cut out the middle man. This would also give them a much better VR option what Sony is going to be able to offer

I'm pretty sure you're the one that misunderstood that whole thing if you think Sony had the exact same plans and decided to change it all on a whim at the last minute to win a press conference. If you have proof of that claim, I'm interested in seeing it. From what I had seen, Sony's Adam Boyes talked about them already heavily leaning towards not having an always online requirement before the #NoDRM stuff broke out all over Twitter. The same was already promised right after the reveal by Shuhei Yoshida. They left the online pass stuff up in the air, but announced at that E3 that online play would require a PS+ sub in the hopes of encouraging developers to drop that practice, which largely died off fairly soon after launch. If they were planning to have everything MS announced, their OS would've likely had the same remnants of such features at launch much like the Xbox One OS did before the many updates to fix and tighten up things over the year or so after launch. People are very critical about them being incredibly slow to make significant updates to the PS4 OS, so why would that not have been the case if what you're claiming was true?

If you've forgotten, the Xbox One stuff started well in advance of E3 with their reveal a few weeks earlier where a myriad of PR issues caused a ton of confusion about features and such that nobody on the Xbox seemed to want to or be allowed to set the record straight. This Kotaku recap seems to capture the confusion and lack of definitive info on various topics quite well from online requirements to whether indies were allowed to self-publish at all like every other platform. That supposed battle at E3 actually happened at the Xbox One reveal when Microsoft laid out their vague set of cards and Sony's plans could be more confident.

[customspoiler="Second part."]Xbox One may have had a better start than Xbox 360, but the PS4 started lapping them pretty quickly and has had Phil Spencer and company largely admitting to defeat. Phil has done a great job taking over the burning wreck that Don Mattrick left for him and turning it around, but they lost the market share they had and now refuse to talk sales numbers. Even that big article announcing the end of Xbox 360 production refused to mention how much units were sold, so they don't want people to be able to talk about the numbers now. You don't do that if it's a huge success, as they're trying to change the narrative to the MAU (Monthly Active Users) being the important thing even though it's only interesting to developers and publishers.[/customspoiler]

Spoilered to save some space.

Eh, I really don't care for this mid-cycle stuff. I partially play consoles so I don't have to worry about hardware changes for a while. I went EIGHT years before upgrading my main platform with the 360 and had a great time with that generation. Minor tweaks are fine but such a major change will shaft those of us that choose not to upgrade, if the 4 times power is real.

Just look at the much smaller upgrade of the New 3DS, and Hyrule Warriors Legends. It's a fairly major title and runs like hot garbage on the standard 3DS. Now, I don't buy 4 times the power for a mid-cycle console. They do have wiggle room since Kinect is dead, but I don't see much more than double power being feasible at a decent price point.

I guess we'll see over time. Xbone Slim at E3 makes sense. I think a more powerful system at a presumably higher price point is a hard sell to the average consumer without something beyond higher resolutions or frame rates. PS4.5 has VR at least, even if it ends up being a flop.

Need some help:

Should I buy Dark Souls II and all the dlc for Xbox 360 or just buy Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin for current gen instead?

Can't give a fuck about this console's success versus that console's. There are 3 things I am excited about:

1) Family: Unconditional

2) Sports/Video games : Second to family, but keeps me very excited for each day to come.

3) Work: To provide for the above two.

I'll take my video games wherever and however they come. If PS4 out sells XB1, dont give a fuck - or vice versa. I am not an unbiased guy, by no means. I have spent all my adult life working on MS technologies, I practically spend all day on MS based technologies so it excites me to use MS products/services. Having said, neither of the companies are actually providing for me and my family, so what they sell and how much they sell for, doesnt change anything for me. If I were to own one of the company's stocks, it may change; but I dont.

Many folks are like me; just get caught up in unnecessary debates on interwebs and get fired up taking sides. So fuck the console wars, talk gaming.

ps: I like the mid cycle upgrades, gives me an excuse to buy the new console. Hope they have a cool trade-in offer when these upgraded ones come out.

The main problem is that we barely have any info on what these consoles actually are and that could easily change by the time they're actually announced, so it's not really even worth fussing about now unless you have a moral opposition to what's being rumored.
