Again, some people are CLEARLY putting way too much importance on being #1 in hardware sales.

Bottom line - The Xbox One is the most successful console to date for MS in regards to hardware sales, at this point in its lifespan, and by a pretty significant margin. Anyone who puts a negative spin on that is either a Sony fanboy, just hates MS in general, or has very little understanding of the gaming market, or business for that matter, as a whole. Again, XBox One had a bad launch and those days are LONG past. Everything since Phil Spencer has come on board has been extremely positive. PS3 had a bad launch as well, due to its excessively high price tag. That didn't stop the PS3 from becoming one of the most successful consoles of all time.

There's a difference between success and profitability. The grand Xbox One plan that Microsoft announced three years ago to take over the living room as the ultimate set-top box to cover your TV and Gaming needs with the help of Kinect 2.0 failed big time. If they had made better choices early on to avoid some of those traps, they could've released a better $400 gaming machine that could've been neck and neck with the PS4 at this point. Instead, they're somewhere around half of what their competitor has done and hoping this new Windows 10/Xbox One plan with the Scorpio iterative console lets them get back where they expected to be three years ago. I'm sure the Xbox One is profitable at this point, but businesses want more than just profitability when they were aiming to take over a few markets at once. No amount of spin changes that.

The good thing is that the execs that let the Xbox One's failures happen are no longer there and the new crew is smart and capable enough to make smarter decisions about their future consoles. The Slim Xbox One should be an easy way to get rid of the extra HDMI input and some of that unnecessary stuff to help it focus on the important features it offers while being a bit smaller box.

The PS3 is not a success by any stretch of the imagination. They blew a shit ton of money making a $600 machine that cost way more than that to produce that put them in the red for years to the point of the company as a whole being in trouble financially with nearly every other division having similar problems. They even had to strip out various bits of hardware from the console with each new revision to save money because it was full of so much unnecessary stuff. The only positives they got out of that generation are Blu-ray's success, PlayStation Plus, indie-friendly policies, and that they learned a lot about what not to do with the PS4. They had a miraculous turn around to be a respectable console in the end thanks to being a worldwide-friendly console, but that doesn't excuse the many mistakes they made with that system leading up to its launch. The only way it could be called one of the most successful consoles of all-time is if due to the vast majority of consoles not having the market presence to even come close to those numbers, though last-gen nearly reached 500 million total units sold while this gen may not even reach 200 million because most of them have been huge disappointments compared to their predecessors.

That's a lot of qualifiers to call the Xbox One their most successful console, especially with new iterations on the way that they'll may treat as a fresh start and a new platform. The Xbox 360 still has ~60 million on it and I don't think that the Xbox One will be around long enough to surpass it. Feel free to call me a fanboy for believing all of these consoles aren't amazingly huge successes, but I'm not going to pretend that everything is just fine the way it is.

Let's not forget the original xbox underground scene made what the xbox 360 and xbox one are today. It was the small guys like myself who helped influence Microsoft to make these systems what they are today (media players, apps, games on demand, indie game development etc). We more or less got the one finger salute from them.

Dropping back into Sunset Overdrive DLC after not playing a long time is very jarring. I really like the game but the control scheme does not lend itself to occasional play.  It s really a very different game.  I am glad MS had Insomniac make it.

The big mistake with their grand plan to have a box on every TV was not introducing competitors for the streaming sticks and boxes that are part of the current set of leaks. Their grand plan for the living room goes back to the 90s when they bought WebTV, with the Xbox line a natural progression of that plan. With the XB1's initial reveals so focused on the media capabilities, I thought they were nuts to not try to package a smaller unit without the gaming horsepower but with the media capabilities as well as Kinect voice controls. Unless they thought they had already dropped the ball by not entering that market sooner and felt the market couldn't handle another entrant to compete with the offerings from Google, Amazon, Apple, Roku, etc. Though that thinking has apparently changed, though the leaked prices that were posted earlier in the topic sound like they're still not thinking clearly.

You are confusing the product announcement with the product launch. All the negative stuff you are referring to happened well before the product landed on store shelves.. A product launch is measured in sales numbers and Xbox One selling 4 million in 2 months.. it was a success. Could it have been more successful without all the nonsense..? It seems like people who fight so viciously on either side are usually trying to justify their purchase or are have some sort of insecurity about their choice. I will repeat myself, the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One are both phenomenal consoles right now. If you really believe that a huge multinational, billion dollar corporation deserves your feverish loyalty on internet message boards, maybe you should be the one looking in the mirror. We play games to have fun, destress, or go to places that we wouldn't normally go. It should be an interesting escape or a hobby.

Not sure if this is directed at me, but I didn't bash the Xbox, just didn't agree with someone's claim that the Xbox has a bigger library than the competition and even with the ones Darby27 listed it still doesn't come close..

I own both consoles so I'm not trying to justify anything, though I wish Microsoft would justify my purchase of a launch console at $500 when they are now giving away a library of games, gift cards, and the console for almost half that cost.. so that would be my only regret.. buying the Xbox One at launch.

I don't understand why people come into the Xbox deals thread and try to bash the Xbox or justify their own console purchase. Both are awesome consoles, and you're an idiot if you don't see that. Personally, I was able to afford one console this generation (College student), and I chose Xbox One because that is where my friends have always played. Now, back games hopefully. I have been playing the Far Harbor add on for Fallout 4. So far I have enjoyed the add story more than the main game. The DLC for these games are always fun though. It provides a small concentrated does of Fallout. Far Harbor plays around with some themes that are far more interesting than the main game. It is also just a ton of fun to explore the island. Has anyone else tried it?

 
I'm not a huge jrpg fan, or I guess have never played one. I've always heard good things about eternal sonata and takes of vesparia. Are either of them good intro games? What are the chances of either becoming backward compatible.

I had bought ToV before and out of the hour I've played so far, it's pretty enjoyable. Unless Pokemon counts as a JRPG, this is my first my actual game from that genre.

If you bought it day one, you've owned it for 2 1/2 years already. You also had a kinect included, which adds $100 to the current bundles. In those two years, you've been playing the hottest new games on fancy tech and the ultimate home entertainment solution (tm).

Early adopters pay a huge premium to get things first and have the newest shiniest toys. The rest of us wait until the price drops to a point we're more comfortable with.
 
You complain as a dayone adopter when I bought it in september for 335€ with a controller (so basically spending 300€ for the console alone) and I've been seeing 1 TB bundles for the same price? I barely earned a few weeks of playtime lol

Btw let's go back to loving each other. I preordered COD AW Legacy for about 50€ and both Pokemon games for about 25€ each, I'm done for physical games this year.

Both the game (physical release, can't recall digital) and DLC have been pretty cheap not long ago. No telling when they'll go on sale again. I'd either wait for a GOTY edition or if the game and DLC goes on sale again, get it then. Depends how you want it (digital or physically).

Damn, son! Also, I've already noted that since adding you, I will never have a chance at being number one on my Overwatch friends' leaderboards. On the bright side, I know someone who I can play with who is actually *good* now, so that's a plus.

Tracer is cool, I haven't really played a hero I dislike yet. I think the key seems to be switching heroes to adapt to the situation. Last night I went 17 and 5 as Junkrat on defense, then we switched to offense and a long distance turret was just dominating me as Junkrat so I switched to Widowmaker and killed the builder with the Sniper rifle and then we could start pushing forward again. I think the worst thing to do is if you keep dying and don't try a different hero. They seem to have a counter to everything so the better you know the various hero skills the better you are prepared to adapt to the various strategies.

There is a lot going on under the skin of this game. I hope they keep adding a lot more heroes.

Yeah, since I've stuck to trying to improve with about 5-6 characters, my mid-game switch game is pretty sucky. Usually I end up switching more because I'm having a crap round with x character than because I see a matchup I can exploit.

I don't know how much I want photo realistic games. In a genre like racing, sure. But playing a game like Overwatch that's like a murderous Pixar movie reminds me how much a distinctive art style can make a game more immersive and fun. Same with something like Borderlands. Even the Telltale games have their own art style that would be sad to lose in favor of photo realism.

Re: graphics and new consoles, I think Sony and MS are in a really tough position. There's what I would assume to be a smaller portion of the overall market that constantly wants better graphics/performance and is willing to pay for them. Meanwhile, PC graphics/performance are constantly improving. Meanwhile, a sizeable portion of the market either is perfectly happy with current performance or is only willing to upgrade if the price is right, improvements be damned. In order to satisfy those who want better performance, you have to create a new console and if you want it to be even somewhat affordable, it will already be less powerful than a mid-range gaming PC at launch.

I like fancy new tech as much as the next guy, but I think it's getting harder and harder to justify new consoles that make incremental graphics improvements at a price tag of $500 or more every several years in the view of most console buyers. I haven't researched this, but my gut feeling is that the majority of console buyers upgrade because they have to since it eventually becomes the only way they can play the new CoD or whatever rather than because they were unhappy with their old consoles and really see several hundred dollars of value in the improved performance of the new ones.

Me, too. I'll never understand the console wars. Without competition, would we have gotten backwards compatibility or a lot of the other improvements MS has made to the Xbox One since launch? I doubt it.
