And you're completely ignoring the fact the 10 series is coming out and no one plans on buying the 970 anymore
Yeah, the 10 series is coming out for $400-$600. Eventually, Nvidia will push out a cheaper 1060 card. Maybe even a 1050, who knows.

The 480 and the 1070 aren't competing in the same space. If you have half a grand to drop on a card then definitely go get a 1070/1080 and it'll be super swell. Better than the 480, for sure. If you have a couple hundred bucks to drop on a card, the 480 potentially represents a huge jump for people who, well, buy $200 cards. It's not a question of insisting that the 1070 is better -- it is. But they're not going after the same market.

You're right, it just doesn't seem logical to release that 480 now. They should have done it a while ago to be competitive. With the 10 series coming out Nvidia will lower the 980. If they compete with AMDs price, they will win, since most people are more familiar and prefer Nvidia.

Their drivers suck.
I hear people say that but I've had a total of two instances where my video drivers were a problem in six years of using AMD cards. Both times the answer was "roll back a version" but I actually just waited for new drivers which corrected the issue. I've also never been unsatisfied with my performance/frame rate/etc.

I don't care what cards anyone buys but, in my experience, AMD has given me great performance for the prices I paid.

Nvidia won't drop the 980 to $200 -- they're just going to cancel the old lines. Their plan is to put out lower end 10 series cards, not to discount their current line (aside from clearance). That said, even if they DID drop the 980 to $200 --- ummm... still a win for that segment of the market so still great all around. Two competing cards with 980 power for $200.

Im really stoked I picked up a 390x 5 months ago... fuck
You buy things late and then complain when they are outdated or not popular anymore. This is called Smackattacking. I therefore christen you!

Their drivers suck. They are releasing products that have been out for a long time. (All Nvidia has to do is lower the 980 to $200 and bam). AMD has been in the pits for years now. I would love to jump ship because I hate Nvidias gouging the past few years, but there is absolutely no reason to.

Also the 1070 is an absolutely great price per performance. People want progression not regression. 1440 and 4K. To get those results at a good FPS you need a good GPU. Nvidia is doing it, AMD is not.
Okay, sure Nvidia drops the price of the 980 to $200. And then sells out all remaining stock, everyone starts producing the 10 series, and then what? That's where the 480 would come in.

The drivers? I don't know. There's been one game I haven't been able to play in the last 3 years or so, Foreign Legion, so the drivers can't be that awful. I think I had to do a work around to get Just Cause 2 MP mod to run but I still got it to run.

Sure, 1070 is progression, but progression costs money and not just the card. You're talking $500 for a card and then even more for a monitor if you don't have that. I mean, yes, for people who like to be on the cutting edge of technology that's awesome, but there's also a big market who just wants to play games and is fine living off of the technological crumbs of the last gen.

Yea, I've heard both and experienced a few problem. I wasn't trying to come off argumentative. Just not a fan of their steps toward "improving" their products.

People buying $200 video cards probably aren't gaming at 4K or buying $600 VR set-ups or whatever. People who buy $200 video cards will get significant progression from a 980-style card over whatever they're using now.

What did I do to you GOD.......

People on Nvidia cards were crashing out as well that night. I don't think a 3rd party mod is a great test :D
I have an Nvidia card and only crashed when trying to launch the game. Never crashed once I got the game to work. I think they fucked up the mod somehow though, I don't even use Windows 10 and it was a pain in the ass to get the game to launch.

Motoki is still playing his grandma games on his Intel integrated chip and that's how he likes it!
I actually have Nvidia horsepower for my pixel games and flash games and RPG Maker games and Renpy visual novels like the rest of you guys. I just only pay attention to it once every few years when I upgrade and then purge it all from my brain.

I used to upgrade much more frequently, but last several years unless a game I actually want to play makes my setup chug (legitimately; not because of shit optimization) then I just don't bother.

Those cards are good for getting newegg glitches on pack in games though, so keep those coming please.

My GTX 770 was ~$320 when I bought it not even two years ago.   Sometimes I ask myself what is even the point of trying to keep up.  Perhaps it would be wiser to put that $600 towards a high-end 4k TV.

It stinks when you had to buy an expensive component during a trough period.

y u no git gtx 780 free frum valve??

I bought my R9 290X for $250 a year ago.  Thinking about the 480 once it comes out and real benchmarks exist for it.  Usually I keep cards for considerably longer than that, though.

I just paid $500 for my GTX 980 last year, how the hell is it a bad thing that AMD is releasing an equivalent for less than half the price? Lol at being a fanboy of a graphics card company...

Anyway, I'll hold off any judgment until actual gaming benchmarks for the 480 come out. Just a few weeks ago we had Nvidia telling us that the 1080 performs twice as well as the 980 Ti, when it really only performs ~15% better on average.

So Dragon Age Inquisition GOTY is on sale for $20 on Amazon. Is it worth getting now, or will it go cheaper? I'm in no rush to play it, but if this is as cheap as it'll go...

Hm. Looks like Newegg wised up to our schemes.

$20 is a great price for that GOTY. The cheapest the DLC alone has been by visiting Juarez is $6.66, which comes out to almost $21 if you want all three (of the real DLCs, I mean, not the weapon and armor pack nonsense).

On one hand, I think the base price for DA:I dropped to $30 so it stands to reason you could get it cheaper on sale.  But, EA is stingy about their DLC so maybe you won't see the GOTY really drop for a while yet.  Anyway, you'll easily get your $20 worth out of the game assuming you like it.

Uh that's an Alaska address isn't it? Maybe they started adding tax there. Try Oregon or Delaware.
To be that guy, Alaska apparently doesn't have a state sales tax though. Although Ketchikan Gateway Borough does, but with the city + borough sales tax, it should only be 9% or about $0.45.

Unrelated but in talking about taxes, VAT, and such, why do some European countries have a reduced VAT on (select) digital books/audiobooks?

You win the at internets for today for looking up a local borough tax at the frozen buttcrack of murica.

I'm sure that knowledge will come in quite handy for you in the future.

y no one of u lazy cheapasses told me u can get Zavix Tower free after it goes paid by playing it? (it's too late now).
Because no one GAF about that game and it will be in a bundle soon enough that all of us here except you and Tomasety buy anyway.

Off to buy a $35 Steam Link and $35 Steam Controller so I can lazybro it up and sit in my new recliner and tell myself I'm going to play Steam games now.

Oh, and speaking about AMD, they are giving out the new Total War game with purchase of select AMD CPUs. Newegg glitch in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...
I would love to see that...

What? You're running on a 1366 board and built it in 2011? Why you never upgrade to Sandy Bridge? Any i5 Skylake now will be a massive jump in performance for you.
Well...then you can go ahead and buy me an i5 or i7 Skylake for my desktop, thanks. ;)

Seriously, though - I ain't found any games requiring Sandy Bridge or above, so I feel no need to upgrade the processor. I get 1080p at 30FPS / 60FPS (depends per game and also where I cap it for a maximum framerate at) for most games on High-to-Ultra settings here with my desktop PC (i7 950; 16 GB RAM DDR3; 4GB 960; Win 7 64-bit).

EDIT:

Side notes: My gaming laptop actually has a i7 4720HQ Haswell.... :p

...and also has 4GB 960M; 16 GB DDR3; and Win 10, while I'm at it here + all.

EDIT 2:

I'm still running an (overclocked) i7-860 on an 1156 board. Why? Because it's consistently worked and not yet been a barrier to running games. A Skylake processor/board would be a big jump but it also requires a new processor/board/memory so why spend the money before I have to? Price of the new stuff is only going to go down in the meantime.
Amen!

What is this nonsense!? The Summer Sale (game) hasn't unlocked yet. It's now listed as "Coming soon". Way to play with my emotions, Ductape studio.

Link your Steam account to GOG. Get GOG versions of some steam games.

The full list of games will always be available on connect.gog.com, starting with these and more:
- The Witness
- FTL: Faster Than Light
- The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut
- Galactic Civilizations 3
- Trine Enchanted Edition
- Saints Row 2
- Shadowrun Returns
- The Witcher: Enhanced Edition
While GOG Connect will stick around, the available games will come and go. These are limited-time offers made possible by participating developers and publishers, so stay tuned as we bring new titles onboard in the future (and grab your copies before they go away)!

edit: okay, that got yanked extremely fast. technical problems according to their twitter
Awesome!!! :)

So, when's the reverse going to be true so I can have some of my GOG games (that I don't have on Steam) get "connected" and just rolled-over onto Steam?
