The Official 2016 Yard Sale Thread

Not super accurate but try

http://comicbookrealm.com/

The values are a bit high and anything that is worth cover price or slightly above is junk.  The Two in One 62 may be quite valuable soon with the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie and the Avengers 2 and 3.  I believe its considered part of Starlin's Thanox / Cosmic story that spanned multiple titles as everytime he changed a title he just continued the storyline in the new title.

So Saturday was kind of bittersweet for me. I went yard saling with some friends because I wouldn't have had a ride otherwise. The sweet part came when we found this and was able to grab it all plus 2 NES's for $180.

The bitter part came when we had to split up the lot. I got a lot that I didn't have yet, but I gave up Conker, one of the Castlevania 3's, one of the Contras, and a good bit else. ::sigh:: So much good trade stock there.

Other finds that morning include Uncharted 2 for $5, a free copy of Wii Sports, and some random kitchen tools.

On Sunday night I grabbed the lot below for $20 from some folks I had met at a yard sale a few weeks back. Not anything super duper amazing there, but it was really nice to have someone say they'll get back to me and actually follow through!

Well I took a lot of pictures on my new phone. Been trying for a full day to get them off of it. Tried via usb, tried via wifi, even added a micro sd, and tried on my pc. I'm going to sodomize bill gates with this shitty windows phone. I never had a problem with my android devices. SO pissed off right now. Insert Cartman pic here.

Upload them to OneDrive and use onedrive on your computer to access them. I do that with my phone except using Google Drive.

Windows phone... Vista... all sorts of great decisions there!
Well my pc was bought in 2008 with 40 or 50% bing cashback. It is vista 64 bit with a quad core :p

I had to update from my flip phone and this phone was the one I could get unlocked for tmobile. I have a VZW prepaid phone and a HTC for virgin too, but this one works for now. All 3 phones were break even if I bought them, so being a cheapass I figured I would try to use one of them. If I wanted to waste money on something I will drop it would be a samsung, but after working for a phone company for years and getting a free unlimited phone, it is tough to want to pay for it. I miss the days when companies paid for phones.

Can't you install Windows 10 though?

Got two small neon signs as a gag gift for dad on father's day (he actually would have loved them) and I broke them both as I was bringing them into the house.  Had them in a box and nudged it on the handle of the refrigerator as I was walking in and shuffled the box, one fell into the other breaking them both.  Only paid $5 each but still pissed it happened.

One was "Live Nudes" and the other was the naked lady like you see on trucker's mud flaps.  The stepmother would not have been pleased since he would have made sure they were in the living room for at least a week.

Did actually have a few decent finds today.  I will post them after Slowdive catches up with his posts.

Welp, I found something today I never thought I'd see at a yard sale. First though, the typical stuff:

IMG_2651.jpg

Ti-83 Plus calculator w/ manual - $5

:xbox: Silent Hill 2 (complete but in generic black dvd case) - $5

(Should've left this, figured it was worth at least $20 but nope, more like $12 on a good day.)

NES - The Magic of Scheherezade CIB - $2

(Never turn down a complete NES game!)

And then, there was this.

IMG_2652.jpg

Atari 2600 Custer's Revenge, complete in box - $10

(mods, don't ban me for posting Custer's naked, hairy little cartoon ass)

Holy shit, it blew my mind just seeing this. And it's in disturbingly good condition too, complete with the inner case, cartridge, and instructions. To be honest, this is probably going straight to ebay because I don't especially want it in my house for a multitude of reasons that should be obvious.

Wow, even weirder - according to the game's Wikipedia page, the publishers actually sued Suffolk County, NY (where I live and found this) for trying to halt sales of the game. Hilarious!

But yeah, how could I not have bought this? Anyone else ever found this game or any others in the same category?

Never found one of the porn games before, they are very difficult to come across anywhere.  Looked the price of this up and it's not as high as I would expect for a game this notorious though you may get a premium because of the condition.

I wouldn't sell that. But if you insist, I would contact whoever grades video games and see what they would charge. Something like that may bring media attention to their services, so you may be able to finagle a free grading. Or if you put it on game gavel (a CAG started that site), you may get some type of featured auction.

Slow day for me today. Found Battlefront II (Xbox) and Republic Commando (Xbox) for $1 each. That's it.

Friday sales kill me. I can't go because of work. I must have heard "we sold em all yesterday" 3 times today. Argh. Almost as bad as "free beer tomorrow".

Had a pretty great day this morning! I locked my keys in my car at one point, but it was a pretty brief interruption. Here's the rundown:

-First sale I goofed on and forgot that they're not doing game stuff until Sunday, but they said they'd hold it for me. Gonna hit them up tomorrow before the kiddo's playgroup.

-Second sale turned out to be one I hit a year or two ago and come away with an N64 and games. Turns out the guy does clean outs so he had some more stuff. Came away with the N64, the Atari 7800, the Atari games and the PS1 controller for $20.

-Next sale had a few games in a box, and I grabbed Play Action Football since it was only 50 cents. Started chatting with the seller and he mentioned "Yeah, that's the only one I could get to work." I tell him I'm good at fixing games, so he went and grabbed the rest of the NES games pictured and sold me the stack for $1. Wooo! They apparently had some SNES stuff, but someone they new was already interested in it.

-DS games were $10 for the lot and are all complete except Kirby.

-I need to test it, but the PS3 with Crack in Time was only $20. They had forgotten to put it out until I asked, and boy do I love it when that happens.

-Shellshock was $3 and my last pick up of the day. Decided to take a chance since it's an Eidos game.

Non-VG finds: A stack of Disney/Kids DVDs for $1 each, an omelette pan, and the Dangerous Book for Boys.

Yeah, this seems to me like a case where a game's rarity and notoriety don't fully translate to value (though don't get me wrong, it's still nothing to sneeze at.). A lot of rare and expensive games are awful, but this one's in a league of its own when it comes to unappealing-ness.

Greatly appreciate the advice. I think I'd be pretty wary about trying to make such a big deal about it though. The condition, while still excellent (considering it's a 34-year-old game I found at a garage sale) isn't perfect. The manual has a little fold, the glue on the inside of the front cover is peeling off, and you can find creases and tiny dents on the box if you really go looking for them. Not sure about grading - I thought the VGA mainly did sealed games? Seems like they would hurt more than help. Will definitely keep GameGavel in mind or maybe shop it around at other collector sites.

About keeping it, part of me wants to because it's such a rare and weird novelty and when the hell am I ever going to see another one. But the other part of me a) doesn't really give a damn about Atari stuff b) could always use a couple hundred bucks and c) thinks it's kinda gross just having it around. :p

Oh and sorry for the thread hijack, everyone.

As far as I'm concerned, there is no thread jacking in this thread unless you start bringing up politics or something.  I enjoy the discussions about the finds here whether they're about games or other stuff.

Didn't get to hit any of the community sales today daughter had a soccer game.

Asked this guy at one sale if he had any games he came back with some Xbox 360 and Wii games. Another guy walked up and was watching me look through them didn't realize he was picking them up aND setting a pile to the side for himself glad I held onto the Halo Wars Steelbook. Halo Wars, Dead Rising, and Dead Space $2 each.

$1 each for Getting Up, Wii Sports, Bratz, Guitar Hero, and Little Mermaid

$1.50 each for Gamecube Controller, Guitar Hero piece, Madagasgar

$2 for PS2 Controller

$2.50 each for Acme Arsenal and Tekken X Street Fighter

$5 Mario Kart

A guy at the flea market had a huge lot of video games and consoles but wouldn't separate wanted $600. Console wise he has an NES, 2 SNES, 2 N64's that I could see. He had an easy $250- $300 sitting on top I didn't look through it as I wasn't dropping that kind of cash.

What's the multiple reasons you don't want it in your house? Your mom won't let you keep it because of the suggestive themes.

Rough week over here. Was only able to go out for about an hour because I had an electrician scheduled for between noon and 1pm and he came called me at 9am saying he was on his way. Hit 5 houses - absolutely nothing. Oh well. Try again next week.

I'd be in the camp of keeping Custer's Revenge just because it could be a good conversation piece. I would make sure to put it on my living room bookcase so everyone could be like - what the hell is that?

Nice scores! Have you played War of the Monsters before? It's super fun.

+1 I fell in love with the demo. Battlefront and God of War were great demos too (even though battlefront erased my memory card). I think they took out the ability to detonate the scouting droid that snipers had in the BF demo. Probably would have been too OP in the final game.

I had a pretty decent morning, despite, for the second week in a row, crossing paths multiple times with the guy that owns the local game shop.  Fiance and the kids slept in, so I headed out on my own for a few hours.

First stop, I ended up with a pile of Gundam models, all assembled, but in box for .50 each.  No idea on the value, but seemed like a good deal to me.  From the same sale, I also got a MegaHouse Collective File DX Naruto figure, NIB for $1 and a NIB Guyver Biobooster Armor Trading Figure #02 for $2.  Out of box, this one is selling for $30+ so definitely a good buy there.

I hit a huge dryspell over the next hour, coming up with virtually nothing, until I went to a sale in neighborhood that had a community sale a few weeks back.  They had a ton of 360 games for $2/ea.  He told me I could take the whole lot for $60 (40+ games), but a lot was so-so or stuff I already had.  I ended up cherry picking the lot - Sims 3, GTA 5, Lego Star Wars TCS, and some other stuff.

The rest of the day was pretty blah until the last sale when I found a Sega Master System by itself for $2.

All-in-all, it wasn't a fantastic day, but it wasn't a complete waste.  It's getting harder and harder since all of these resale shop guys are hitting the sales and sending their friends and significant others to spread out to cover more ground.

I forgot to post it...Chester the molester almost ran me over last weekend. I was crossing the street and he made a left turn and tried to run me down. His mirror almost clipped me.

I've noticed that there are now "buyers" for some of the local collectable stores that I run into. Once store has two guys split up that resell to the store and the other store owner does his own shopping. There is a 3rd shop that has his Dad hit sales. The funny thing is all of them think I own the one of the other stores in the area.

I got a nice GI Joe lot that I have to post, but it was cool to see their faces when they saw I already bought it. (I may have posted that thought already).

Sorry everyone if those paragraphs didn't make sense.

All I heard was attempted vehicular homicide. Damn, yard sailing has gotten hardcore. People are running each other down for good deals on video games?

I've had a member of my distinguished competition almost run me over this past fall.  I've also seen many close calls at community yards sales.  It gets worse every year as more and more resellers are out to try to make a buck.

I never notice competition at the sales I go to. I know people look for video games and stuff, but I haven't really caught repeated competition that I see in my area. I'll see the same old people going to sale to sale with me, but they are usually looking for other stuff.

I have competition in the downtown/hipster area about 15 minutes away from me. I don't go there because it is a disaster. 20 people outside before a sale begins, fighting over boxes, etc. That is why I don't even go down there. Just gets me angry.

I do like when people always give a story about why they want stuff. My grandchildren love Ninja Turtles and old Nintendos, etc. At the town-wide yardsale day one guy was asking about sets of legos, Transformers and the other similar action figures, and old video games for his "autistic son". He loves the old 80's video games like the original Nintendo and Sega Genesis, and the poor dad can't afford to get him alot of them. I almost teared up right there in the driveway.

That's the bullshit line the guy I kept crossing paths with was telling people. "I collect alot of the old game systems for my kids." I almost chimed in at one of them, with "you mean to resell at your shit hole game store downtown?" I bit my tongue, got in my car and hurried to the next sale instead of showing my hand.

AFAIK, he isn't aware that I'm his competition since I usually keep a low profile when I see him around.

Yeah Chester's go to is for his "granddaughter" or he "buys for a daycare".

At one sale a woman said he was creeping her out as he left and I asked: "What was his story? grandaughter or daycare?"

Her: laughs, "He said he runs a daycare, but I don't believe him."

Me: "Yeah, would you leave your kids with that guy?!" laughing

That is why I call him Chester the Molester (with you guys/gals and my family) btw in case I never explained in here.

I ran into a older redneck couple last week buying up all the games. I stood there as he was trying to talk this college girl into selling her DS games for $2 instead of $5. His phone went off with the ebay cha ching in the middle of it. I saw Pokemon logos and star fox but couldn't get a good look. They figured out I was out for games when I bought a ps2 and asked about games and started getting really fierce in their search. There was a sale on a culdesac which I usually just drive around it and pull up to the sale well they saw me and drove right into the driveway and the guy got out and RAN up to the sale. I was thinking "whatever man" and actually got the lead on them for some ps2 games down the street. He came up right behind me and stood there for a minute while I was making a stack of stuff to buy and finally gave up and left. I thought that was the end of it and drove back to my neighborhood. I noticed my neighbor was having a sale and went down to be friendly and introduce myself and I shit you not these people showed up to their sale too while we were talking. I saw these people at almost every sale I went to and there were 3 community sales going on. I was very annoyed but pleased to not see them on Saturday when I found a sale where a guy was getting rid of all his retro games.

Sounds like some folks heard that old video games are worth money. Here's hoping they only know that "Marios and Zeldas" are worth money.

Add pokemon and that is about all I know. LOL I tend to buy everything if the price is right, and I don't really resell games, so I am pretty ignorant on values. (plus I don't use tech at sales) I know a few standouts, but I generally look for, zelda, mario, and pokemon stuff.

Comics, cards, and toys are really what I know most about, but I have a pretty good knowledge of what things are worth money in any category. I'm a little weak in power tools, but in most other areas I know my stuff. I get pissed when people beat me to games, but I can find something of value at pretty much any sale. It comes down to if I want to bother trying to sell it or not.

So a while ago, I picked up a bucket of watches for $1. After sifting out over a while I find this in the bottom.  My question is this: Real or Fake? I'm leaning towards fake but it just may be a rough Rolex. I've not dealt with watches before so this is uncharted territory. Thoughts?

On the competition subject at the flea market theres about 4 regular game guys that I run into. 3 of them I dont mind much, but the 4th guy is kind of annoying. It starts at 5am, but he gets there at like 430 and goes around to everybody telling them not to sell any of there games until he sees them. Hes mentioned to me multiple times he sells on ebay. Ive beaten him to afew good games, but most of the time anything with a semi good price hes buying.

Yard Sale wise I get the whole we sold all the games earlier speech afew times especially around 930-10am. Have only actually ran into 1 person buying games at the same time as me though.

Question

What is the best way to clean NES/SNES/Sega games? Should I just hit them with rubbing alcohol? Do I need to take them apart? Finally got a NES and SNES and as a kid I would use alcohol, but not sure thats the correct way to do it.

91% alcohol (not the standard 73%). Q-tips brand for NES and SNES, dollar store swabs for n64 (they are thinner and fit easier). I can't remember which one is better for genny carts.

Slow's Garage Sale Diary:

There is a new player (pun intended) in my area. He is probably a CAG. I saw him today and he was only looking for games and was wearing a video game tee. I gave him an ocular patdown and determined he isn't a threat. I have logged him into my memory though.

Chester showed up at a sale I was at and he actually wasn't a jerk...He may have felt bad for almost killing me last week.

I bought a huge sealed sports card lot today for $30 (wax boxes, factory sets, and statues). I'm not going to do a pic since it is mostly late 80s-90s junk, but I figured it was worth it based on the tote it was in. At first they said they will give me some boxes to repack it and I was like, "nah brah. I want the tote too."

There's q-tips for cleaning electronics. Wooden handles, or foam heads.

I don't like using normal q-tips, cause they leave cotton every where.

Also, use isopropyl alcohol or wiggy will freak out.

P.S. I don't like using the dry erase sponges because they're actually resurfacing the outside of your cart.

Oh god not the isopropyl discussion again...Also do not use coors light to clean games. ;)

I should clarify that I clean a few hundred carts a year, so I go for the quicker method to get the pins from unusable to not as dirty.

Also always make sure you give the pins plenty of time to dry or you will short the system.

I know we discussed this in detail in the past. If anyone can go back and find it or our list of Gsale tips, I can add them to the OP or 2nd post or something.

Isopropyl is my first choice, but some times there's nothing for it but to open the case and run some 2000 grit sandpaper over the contacts. I pick up a lot of carts with slightly rusty contacts and that's the only thing that really works for those.

For marker on the outside of the carts, I usually use the magic eraser even though it removes some of the finish. I need to grab a clear marker one of these days.

One more tip: alcohol typically doesn't damage NES or SNES labels, but you have to be really careful with anything else. Genesis and N64 labels are really fragile.

Someone in that link mentions not to use Brasso. Why not? I've used it in the past when IPA wasn't enough. It made my Bomberman 2 cart run and look like new.
With all polishes, overuse will wear away the metal connectors. If nothing else will work, I still recommend Brasso as a last resort.
