Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

PC is an absolute last resort for picking up a game for me. I only use it for exclusives which are generally indie stuff.
Granted I am not saying pc is the best option. Though mod potential does open up for big improvements on games. It'd be nice if someone did a mod for say tales of symphonia to make kratos an zelos both able to be in the party at the same time. Or mod in narikiri dolls.

pc does give options though and more options is always nice. Especially if pc gets a sale. I prefer physical as well so pc isn't my top choice either.

Europe has been getting 3DS steelbooks for a while, at least starting with Majora's Mask 3D. In other words, there's zero chance we're getting them.
well Its a good thing I didn't want them then. I like steel books but for 3ds cases I'd pass. Now if they did a giant case like the bmo one for explore the dungeon because I don't know but was steel book I'd import that in a heart beat.

Honestly, I was hoping Iffy would skip the CE on this one. Collector's editions aren't all that special when *every*single*game* has to have one.
I fell for the original release of this game regretted it, It's not a bad game, just not one I am proud to say I pre-ordered the LE for.

Hatsune Miku Future Tone is officially out & it kicks ass!

Now if you excuse me I have 200+ more songs to finish!

I never really game on PC either, mostly because: My PC is weak, I don't like to play games at my desk and don't feel like connecting it to a TV, I'm too lazy to implement mods, etc.

The only games I play on PC are VNs, likely because most of them are exclusive to PC. So I admit that I am a console pleb.  ;)

The early reviews coming in for Tokyo Sessions FE are overwhelmingly positive. There are also numerous comparisons to the stronger entries in the Shin Megami Tensei series. As someone who is currently hooked on Person 4 Golden, I decided it was finally time to put in a pre-order on Amazon. (I get the Prime discount)

The collector's edition won't be happening for a procrastinator like me. But that's okay. I can only afford so many collectors editions every year, and I already got the Odin Sphere one. I have no regrets, Odin Sphere is my bag, baby.

The level design sounds like it's on par with Mega Man X6,which was so badly designed you couldn't beat some stages if you didn't have a certain armor equipped.
It feels more like X6 without any of the Nightmare stuff. Also you can't wall climb, but you can grab ledges and infinite air dash.

I know we won't get the steelbooks, but I wouldn't mind picking up that N3DSXL if it came over to America.

I am going to play the shit out of Tokyo Mirage Sessions starting this weekend.  So been looking forward to playing a good, new jrpg. Game has a current metacritic of 84; I couldn't be more excited.

Same for me. I generally dislike gaming on a PC. I have a decent one including a Radeon R9 290X GPU, but it doesn't feel as exciting. They're fun to build, and make the most sense for RTS and MMO's though, of course.

Yeah, you can run a long cable to your TV and still sit on a couch but in my setup leaving that cable out is a pain in the same way that disconnecting and reconnecting it every time would be.

But most importantly I like having snapshots of hardware to revisit in the future (since I keep all my consoles) for ensured compatibility and physical media.

I'll acknowledge it's good for some people, but it's just more fun to use a console for me.

Handhelds are sweet, too.

lots of jrpgs are coming to PC now guys...they're cheap, and they look great.

I plan on buying LoH:TitS Second Chapter when it goes 50% soon, perhaps even this week with the Steam Summer Sale.

Maybe i'm uncool but I wont buy sucky games I know suck esp when they're $79.99. Hopefully that art book is substantial.
nope, it is not substantial, it is a 56pages hardcover artbook.

what is with all these thin hardcover artbooks???

i rather have a 100pages softcover artbook.

From the what I played of MN9,it's not even worth playing even if your dying for a new MM game. The game is just the blandest thing. The level design is what kills it;the stages are so empty and lack any life to them. The game also has a ton boring cutscenes (cause a game like this needs those).

Honestly, I thought it would be 7's across the board more or less. A little surprised at the scores it's getting.

If you're looking for something more in line with it, you can always try 20XX on Steam that I think was linked in the thread earlier. A few people on my Steam friends list wrote some pretty positive reviews about it too, but it's a bit of a roguelike mix with similar elements seen in Crypt of the Necrodancer. Plus it's cheaper. Although it's still early acess, but it looks like they're somewhat close to release assuming 1.0 will be the release build and .9 doesn't turn into .10 like many other devs do.

Also has co-op which is kinda nice.

All the footage I've seen looks like this game was made by a college class for their finals in "game design". It's looks decent, but nothing that would be all that appealing to a MM fan. What you have stated looks to be what I was thinking.

Glad I steered clear of this, although I'll still get the Vita physical if it's ever released.

I wasn't sure what to expect. The whole venture just seemed so bizarre, that I had no idea what was going to be coming with this game. Some of the preview videos looked great. Bizarre, but great.

So I didn't opt to go in big on the collectors edition, and took more of a wait-and-see approach, instead of pre-ordering. It was clear that Nintendo was going to be pushing this one pretty hard, as I've been seeing more advertising for it than I expected. But now with the critical response being so high, I'm willing to go ahead and throw my hat in the ring for a pre-order on the standard edition.

A big part of it is the comparisons to the Persona games. I got back into playing Persona 4 Golden a few weeks ago, and I am in DEEP right now. Like every spare moment I'm in that game, and I am loving it. Definitely going to finish the story. If Tokyo Mirage Sessions has a bit of that flavor in the presentation and gameplay, then I will definitely want to have a copy.

I'm guessing the Fairy Fencer LE will be the first LE in a while that I actually don't get, nothing in it seems worth spending the extra money for.

I might get the game later on, likely after a sale or if I have some credit lying around.

I feel kinda bad since I want to support the game too. Like someone else mentioned, I also really like the artist for the game. I might as well get an official art book instead, which would be a better use for the money instead of pouring it in the lacking LE...

There really haven't been a whole lot of good console jrpgs this century.  It has been mostly a number of trash efforts.  All consoles have been severely lacking in quality jrpgs since the PS1.  Yes, even the PS2 era didn't have that much to offer.  Almost all development began to migrate to handhelds when the DS released.  Japan simply isn't as thirsty as we are because they have a ton of rpg games domestically that never make it over here.  Plus, apparently they are fully satiated by just playing on handhelds.

Every year I yearn for more console jrpgs, and this is the year that we are finally getting a payoff. I am buying them all on day1 because I want to see more of them created in the future.  We have to send developers and publishers the right message that this stuff will get supported.

The only thing now is praying that 'I am Setsuna' gets a physical release.  I think i have to forego buying it because I see a physical release as an inevitability.

*Steam product codes for Phantom Brave PC will be sent via e-mail upon shipment of the product.
I just don't understand these releases... If you're going to release a physical version of a digital game, give out PHYSICAL codes. Is it so hard to get some premium paper stock, put some pretty art all over both sides of it and print the damned code on it?

That'd be worth more than a 44 page hardcover artbook IMO.

The 3ds wins on the exclusive jrpgs that are actually good front. As a jrpg fan I have seen literally nothing of note on the ps4 until now. There's going to be an influx of good titles coming out for it soon though.
Personally, I prefer the Vita library of RPGs to the 3DS'. I do understand that many of them aren't technically exclusives to the Vita, but I've always been more about total library as opposed to exclusives. The majority of my favorite games of all time have been 3rd party and not necessarily exclusive to any single console.

Tokyo mirage sessions has always looked good. It getting good reviews is not surprising. Atlus doesn't disappoint when it comes to making good games.

You think there will be alot more of them on the ps4. Though even if there are eventually that's not much of a reason to pick them up except for the people who don't own a decent computer or any other sony systems. As I already noted the ps4 lacks exclusives since it shares the majority of its library with pc and the vita/ps3. Also technically since the vita tv exists it counts as a console.
I think like many console gamers, I'm reluctant to transition over to gaming primarily on the PC. Part of it is what you said, I want to try to stick with physical media as long as I can.

I am sorry but I can't really understand why people can love Tokyo Mirage Sessions so much when it has been censored so much that it loses its flavor.  The only way I am buying tokyo mirage is if it comes to PC, and the likelihood of that is like hell freezing over, as a pc release is about the only way it stands a chance of getting decensored and proper translation.

Just take a gander at fire emblem fates official and fan translation and you would understand why I do not trust nintendo of america to treat any of the games released by them with respect. Not that I think they respect their customers that much as it is.....still I am impressed so many people like Tokyo Mirage Sessions even though they change the context of story  in a few dungeons, bosses and some of the main story characters(mainly clothing and age). However considering how lacking in games nintendo releases over here for wii u I can't blame people for being hungry getting even a decent jrpg.

Didn't Atlus do the translation for TMS? The censorship doesn't really matter to me anyway. As long as the gameplay is good, I'll enjoy it. Also glad to see it getting good reviews after so many people thought it was going to be bad solely based on Japanese reviews.

Is there any comprehensive list of what exactly was changed? I'm aware the game doesn't "officially" release until Friday, but I'd be interested in reading/looking through something like that, if it exists.

I completely understand your stance on this, I have a few friends who feel the same way.

However, I am one of those people who would rather play a censored release instead of not playing it at all. Of course an uncensored release would have been best, but we were all aware that it was not going to happen. As disappointing as censorship is, I will not just skip over a game that I think is interesting because of it. I might be in the minority, but that's just how I feel.

Thankfully, what other people think doesn't matter to me. I buy games that are objectively good and games I like.

First Impressions Mini-Review (ok maybe not so mini) of: Hatsune Miku Project Diva Future Tone on PS4

Let me first start off by reminding you just how much value you're getting with this game!

It's literally EVERY MIKU SONG that's been put into a game minus Miku Project Diva X.

After 6 hours of playing nonstop (must sleep and eat because I'm a feeble human!) I've probably done 25-30% of the songs IF THAT!

Take a look at this:

prgoress.jpg

So that scroller on the left is for the whole song list, I've been going down it on normal & as you can see I've YET MUCH MORE TO DO!

If you've never played the 3DS or Arcade games then you want Colorful Tone. There's so many songs I've never heard or seen the videos for because I never got around to playing all of those. I mainly stuck to the PSP/VITA games so I've seen all of the Future Sound songs that have come up so far.

I won't lie there's a bit getting used to the new controls (mainly hold) the big left and right arrows are like stars on the VITA games so nothing new there. Hold is basically where you have to hold 1-2-3 or even 4 buttons at once. It can be a pain to get used to but you don't have to hold it if you just wanna get a perfect, its OPTIONAL!

The game does seem to be a bit more difficult than let's say Diva F2nd which is widely known to be a bit of a bitch on extreme. This one is probably harder than that or at least on that level of difficulty.

The visuals are amazing! 1080P 60FPS for us console pleebs this is magnificent! You can see the notes flying thru the screen and it took a few songs to get the hang of how fast they were coming in even in normal!

The only drawback so far is that if you wish to stream/capture video to post on youtube the audio of the songs is muted by default. You can't hear it once it's captured or while you're streaming. It seems like Sega has done this in the past so people who knew of this got capture cards to get around it. So that's basically the only way to get a normal video up to show off your perfects on Extreme or Extreme Plus! Which btw sounds terrifying! xD

All in All if you like Miku, GET THIS! The value is Insane.

Also on a sidenote you can use your main US Account to play the game normally & still get achievements normally. You still have to buy it on a Japanese account but it's playable on your US one. It's a separate savefile than the japanese account one if you're using the same PS4 for both accounts!

I remember when I was younger and how many games I had to use shoddy ass translation patches to play, or tried to muddle through in japanese. And now some of those games or their sequels are getting releases here and possibly in the future.

I'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth, and just be damn happy we are getting them at all to begin with.

Hey I don't like Nintendo changing the clothes of the characters in TMS either, but that doesn't actually affect the quality of the game.
