The Official 2016 Yard Sale Thread

I don't know if this has been discussed yet but, one of the best things I've found for cleaning a cart on the actual non stickered surface is packing tape. Take a peice of tape and put it on the sticker and the take it off. It will take part of the marker off each pass. A couple minutes should clean a section of cart off easily.

I had a crazy day today. I had to make a decision since so many sales were going. I scarified an old acoustic guitar to go to a sale that advertised comics.  Dropped $50, but got some decent stuff. The lady wouldn't deal at all, but I got some modern keys and some incentive books.

I went back to a sale that promised a NES, but the husband didn't want to sell it. They were apologetic at least.

I also went to a group of sales at a storage facility. The guy that runs it told me I could check out an abandoned unit, so I went through most of it. Grabbed some vintage paintings and some etchings. A couple were hand numbered and the paintings were marked with hand tags from an Antique store for $50+ each. I haven't had time to research the paintings yet, but I know at least one of the other pieces is worth money. The unit also had 6 boxes of magic cards sorted by color (blue, black, green, etc), so I grabbed those as well as a couple bags of unused ultra pro card supplies. There was also a couple decks in cases, so those may have some good cards in them. There was a cord for a ps1/2, so someone may have beat me to whatever was in there. I also got a made in Taiwan Pillsbury Dough Boy cookie jar from 1988 that was pristine...It's not worth much (around $20), but it is cool.  I put everything into bags and sealed them in case of any type of bugs though everything looked relatively clean.

I did get some games, but nothing amazing in that dept today.

Isopropyl is my first choice, but some times there's nothing for it but to open the case and run some 2000 grit sandpaper over the contacts. I pick up a lot of carts with slightly rusty contacts and that's the only thing that really works for those.

For marker on the outside of the carts, I usually use the magic eraser even though it removes some of the finish. I need to grab a clear marker one of these days.

One more tip: alcohol typically doesn't damage NES or SNES labels, but you have to be really careful with anything else. Genesis and N64 labels are really fragile.
Good tip on the magic eraser might have to get a prismacolor

I might have to try this

Sorry to quote myself, but this also does fantastic on DVD cases with marker on the outside of it on the plastic outer cover.

You do a lot of hunting to type paragraphs describing your finds. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Florida is super dry this time of year.  Not many yard sales but I ended up with about 300 modern comics (about half not in good shape) for $30.  I got most of Endgame and some of Zero Year along with some 3D covers and a few variants so the price was worth it.

Also got Sonic RPG DS for .25 cents and disc only Budokai 3 for .25 cents.

Perseverance finally pays off! I ran across the ginger again but only at one sale but it didn't look like I missed much.

After there, we hit a sale out in the middle of nowhere, which ended up being a flea market type sale.

The third table in, I found this:

4985631463ac404e4e153ffed0c51fa3.jpg

I asked how much, expecting the worst.. she told me "whatever you offer."

I pulled out what I had in my low cash pocket (1.75) and she said that will work.

I have other finds as well, but this is the definite winner this weekend.

EDIT: and yes, it is still brand new and sealed with y-folds

Pretty crappy day today.

Hit up about 15 sales

$8 - GBA SP, DS lite, Mario Party DS

$6 - sealed Marx Brothers DVDs and a collectible book worth about 20 - 30 bucks

One sale had a PS2 w/ a bunch of sports games for $50. I asked about other games just in case, and they mentioned a Game Gear inside. Said I could be interested, but they said they didn't bring it out because they were going to ebay it because it much more collectible than say the PS2 and it even works. I didn't bother having them bring it out after hearing that.

Another sale had 360 games with stickers saying what it costs on amazon. Black Ops 1 - Amazon is 24.98 only 14 here! The other games were all like 10, 12 bucks so that was obviously a bust.

Only went to a few sales today. Got White Knight Chronicles 2 for PS3 and Lego Star Wars The Clone Wars for Wii for $10

Stopped at a sale close to my house, went through a stack of dvds and disc only Tomba was in there. Its pretty scratched up, kid said I could have it for free. Also grabbed Super Mario Advance 2 for GBA for a $1

Nice find! I've never thought of the low cash pocket thats a great tip probably going to use that now.

Here are my finds today. Melee is case only but everything else is what it seems. No time to go item by item but I spent a total of $65 on all of it. Hope everyone had good luck this weekend!

Did pretty well today. Highlights include Monster Rancher 4 complete and mint for $1, a box of about 30 early silver age comics for $3, and an Xbox 360 slim with Kinect in box for $10.

No game finds this week, but I picked up the They Call Me Bruce? DVD for $1.

I haven't seen that movie in years. Looking forward to watching it tonight.

I'll upload pictures from my ipad later they seem to do better then my phones sideways pics.

Day started at the flea market. Picked up 2 marvel comics(they looked old know nothing about value) for $5. Noticed she had a PS2, Controller, and some games. Said $1 each so I bought them. Later asked a guy about his 360 as I do he pulls out some sega games and says $5 each. Ended up getting 3 for $10. Luckily I did because I didn't plan on buying Rock N Roll Racing and to my surprise it's worth a good amount.

Found a multifamily yard sale got the ps1 with games for $10. Another house had bottom 3 games for $2. Casears Palace is still sealed.
[attachment=22642:image.jpeg]

Last sale I got anything at paid $2 each for the games and $1 for the sega wire. I never knew Mario All Stars were in NBA Street Vol 3.

Skyward Sword in Case for $10.00, extra cd slot - no music cd unfortunately.

PS3
GTA V - $1
Dead To Rights $1
Bullet Storm $1
SW Force Unleashed $1
Dead Island $1

Oh yeah - one other thing that I thought was funny/disappointing was a sign for a yardsale that was the Fry - Shut Up and take my money meme. I was sure that would be a sale with games, comics, action figures, something like that. Nope. Some old house fixtures, random pieces of furniture, gardening stuff, etc.

You know what. There was a sale like that this past weekend by me too. They used Lionel Richie's picture with "Hello is this the sale you are looking for?" on their sign. They had another sign with the most interesting man in the world on it that I couldn't read.

Maybe there was a blog, TV show, or something recently that said it was a good idea to use memes. I was going to snap a pic of the one sign, but I forgot. I guess it is a good idea to grab attention, but by the time a person reads/process the sign as they are driving most people would miss the address.

The sale was disappointing, though they did have a $50 PS2 with junk games and some DVDs.

Someone in that link mentions not to use Brasso. Why not? I've used it in the past when IPA wasn't enough. It made my Bomberman 2 cart run and look like new.
I use Brasso with a paper towel application method myself; I can't see overuse being an issue when the games get cleaned once every 10-15 years if even that ;)

Seems like the holiday is killing the yard sales around here. Hopefully the community sales come back next weekend. Hope everyone is having better luck than me!

There wasn't much out today, but I still got one good score. They advertised games, but it was a difficult place to find, so by the time I got there they still had a bunch of good stuff. Cherry-picked this.

[attachment=22743:IMG_6144.JPG]

This was $2.50 a game, so $15 total. Zelda is missing the music CD, unfortunately, but I'm glad to have the game.

[attachment=22744:IMG_6143.JPG]

Another $3 for these movies, from the same sale.

The rest of the morning wasn't fruitful, but I'm glad to have found some first-party Nintendo games. Doesn't happen too often around here.

Same here - I started out alone early again and had a rough morning. In the first hour and a half, I only spent a dollar and some happy meal toys. I didn't run across any competition, but it seems like I kept getting to sales too late. One sale had a Wii and games advertised, and when I got there, they said it was gone, along with a bunch of other gaming stuff they didn't even have out. Someone stopped and asked about anything else and apparently scored big.

About an hour later, I got to another sale and just as I was walking up the driveway, I see a kid bringing out an armload of games - right to a waiting group. They ended up taking an N64, a bunch of controllers for it, a few SNES games, a Gameboy and a few others. I laughed and said that I've been minutes late all morning and kept missing out on the games. As soon as the other group drove off, he told me to hold on a minute and went into his garage and came out with a box of stuff. I ended up with:

2 SNES consoles

Sega Saturn + 2 controllers

NAKI Gameboy Mini Arcade (Sam, my fiance, just had to have it)

Wired 360 controller

He said he may have more, so I gave him my number. Hopefully I'll hear back. Pretty cool guy, that turns out was the guy that won the Intel PC build competition back in 09 by turning an old 1978 Millennium Falcon into a fully functional PC case.

At another sale I ended up getting two NIB Furby's from 1998 for $5/ea and a large framed texture-coated print of 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte' for $5.

Other than that, it was a rather boring day. The Saturn is what saved the day.

I expected it to be dry like it has been the last few weeks.  FL is usually dead in the summer because of the heat and this is usually one of the worst weekends.

I did get some comics and games after not being the first to a few games.

I ended up with

Madden 15 X1 - $1

COD IV X360 - $1

Battlefield III X360 - $1 (Im close to finding one of these a week)

Ratchet and Clank Into the Nexus and another Ratchet PS3 Game - $5 total

At one of the last sales, I was looking through a box and a guy asked me to move my car as he stated I trapped him in (which I didn't, bu Im happy to help).  As soon as I left the boxes, a guy pulled out a bunch of DS games in a holder.  I came back after moving my car and was kicking myself and went to leave.  As I walk off, I see him out the game holder down.  I casually walked back and grabbed it.  The Kid sold it to me for $5, I gave him $9 as I expected it to be a lot more.  I ended up with (highlights, mostly cart only, some with manuals)

Pokemon Pearl (2 Copies)

New Super Mario Bros (has manual)

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon

Pokemon Soul Silver

Mario and Sonic at Olympics (cart stick ripped off, came with manual)

Scribblenauts

Super Scribblenauts

Lego Indiana Jones 2

Spyro

Spongebob Drawn to Life

9 others I dont recall but mostly shovelware

I also got 45 comics for $15, nothing great but highlights include

X Factor 6 (1st Apocalypse, probably in F / VF-

Spider Man Annual Wedding - NM / VF +

Spider Man vs Wolverine 1 - VF - / VF +

3 issues in Kraven's Last Hunt Story

About 15 to 20 Marvel GI Joe Issues

Transformers Marvel 4 through 12 with a few others

5th Marvel Graphic Novel 4 (1st New Mutants)

Random 1st printing Marvel Graphic Novel of a concept that didn't go anywhere

Not the best comic lot but I am stocking up on Marvel GI Joe and Transformers as IDW begins the shared universe (and apparently so does Dreamworks).

PS3 controller $1
PS4 controller $1 (broken)
GameCube controller $5
Forza Horizon 2 xbone $10
Left 4 dead 2 $1.75
Assassin creed $1.75

Friday morning I see an advertisement mentioning games.  In a pic I see yellow player's choice GC labels in a stack of cases.  Of course I have to work so by the time Saturday rolls around they are all gone.  Left at 9:00 this morning for an hour, had an OK find due to mislabeling the ad they placed as not local.  I'll post it someday.

No games this week, but found some $0.50 CDs:

Dru Hill - Tell Me remixes EP
Puff Diddy & the Family - No Way Out (for Victory, Young G's, and the Benjamin remix. Lol)
Boyz II Men - II (sealed - cuz why not?)
Korn - A.D.I.D.A.S. Remix EP (with a remix of their cover of Ice Cube's Wicked)
House of Pain - Jump Around (Jason Nevins remix EP)
Fenix TX - Self Titled

dissapointed it took me over a month of yardsale hunting in my town to actually come across some good videogame deals.

got spyro the dragon 2 on ps1 for $1.  gave me a scare on the ps3 but i learned that the game just has audio issues cause when i played it on my ps2, it worked fine.

also got a holiday themed thinkgeek t-shirt from a yardsale for $1.  looks like it has hardly been used. i couldn't get a good picture of it so heres a stock image of it from online

My Saturday went from shitty to pretty good.

I drove around for 2 hours, saw a lot of sales. And all I got was a small HDTV for $2, which didn't even work.

So I took it to Goodwill a hour later, and saw another person donating at the same time had a nice looking cabinet in her trunk she was about to unload. I've been looking for furniture for my new apartment and they let me have this IKEA Effektiv cabinet. They also have an IKEA Effektiv desk they are giving to me for free as well this week, though I will be paying them a bit since they these are really nice pieces of furniture. I have been looking for dark brown or white IKEA furniture on Craigslist for a while so this was pretty awesome.

Yukon Cornelius and "the Bumble" for the win.

I would love to get back to sale'n! All of June was a bust either because of working Fri/Sat, weather in the mid 90s by 10am, or this weekend which was a combo of the 2 then crazy rain/the holiday today.

2 years late, but tonight it begins. Because America!

slow's week of epic finds (from 2 years ago, so they may not seem epic now)

Day 1:

$10 CIB wii lot

$5 NERF lot

And the only one of these I've ever found. Atari Lynx wanted $10, paid $7

next post 7-4-17. I kid I kid

more to come...

A fuckin' Lynx? Man, that's crazy. I don't know if I'd keep one if I found it. Did you keep that?
Yeah I kept it. My goal is to own every system and every standard NES game, but they can only be from thrift/garage sales-not buying them on ebay or something and I can not pay more than $5 for any individual game if I need it for my collection. I don't think I'll ever hit the every system goal, but this brings me 1 step closer. :)

That's what my plan is now too.  I flip any duplicate stuff I pick up, though.

On a related note, a few years back I had close to 300 NES games in my collection.  We went through a rough patch and ended up selling them all.  A day doesn't go by where I don't want to kick my own ass for that.  :wall:

Day 2:

This was kind of a weird find. I saw that this person advertised a wii, so I swung by. I ended up seeing that she had some boxes in her garage filled with sunglasses, reading glasses, electronics accessories, etc.

She wanted $50 for the wii and $5 per box for the other stuff. Ended up talking a while and negotiated her down to $35 for everything. I think I got 8 boxes of misc stuff and here are some pics to give you an idea. Most of the phone cases are outdated, so most of them were donated, but the other stuff should go pretty quickly at $1 each at a show or I can just dump them in a lot on CL. I forgot I had them until I was looking over these pics. lol

My 1st blue wii! CIB with other stuff $35.

This was in a different area. I saw video games in an ad, so I decided it was worth the drive. I got there early, so she wouldn't negotiate. $25

I don't remember how or why this ended up being $11. I think that is what she was asking when the stuff was added up. I just barely beat the d-bag from Savers (who I haven't seen this year-2016 at all) to this stuff.

Oh, and this guy was in the same case as Mario Party

more to come...

Understand that! My wife and I had the same scenario about 3 years ago. I sold off most of my 'wisdom tree' and 'bunch games' collection. Luckily my little Samson and Panic Restraunt games didn't sell :)

Day 3...ummm Thursday? My finds are so epic, I skip a day to let you recover!

N64 system and controllers were marked $20. No games in sight. I asked if they had any games and they said they did, but they didn't put them out because they were not sure how to price them. I said "normally about $1 each is reasonable" and I asked to look at them. After looking over the games I said "How about $30 for the lot?" deal

Oh and this guy...

more to come...

I said "normally about $1 each is reasonable" and I asked to look at them. After looking over the games I said "How about $30 for the lot?" deal
Come on. I know that we're cheapasses and that finding cheap crap (and possibly reselling it) is fun for us, but I can't approve of this. Paying $30 for that stuff is (simply in my opinion) conning them. I don't expect you to tell them what it's really worth, but that is just deceitful.

That's not what people go to yard sales for. At a yard sale you get the cheapest price you can because you don't know if anything will work, most of the time and effort you put in doesn't yield anything, and most people are just trying to get rid of stuff.

I disagree. I could have said .25 each. I believe $1 per game is reasonable as a general rule of thumb if I intend to buy all of them. I am giving a blind price without seeing the games at that point. Factor in sports games, complete junk, and the fact that they may be heavily soiled/scratched and a buck each sounds right. The system may not work, the games may not work. For me personally I tend to pay $1 /game and $10 a console on average (-in my head, I average it out) in case something doesn't work. I could try to go even lower, but they happily took my offer without me pushing.

Yard sale ethics are always an interesting topic.

When buying games, I try to judge it on the day I am having, who the seller is, and on how my most recent encounter with competition has been.  For example, if I having spent much time going around or haven't driven around much or eaten, I think I am more likely to pay the asking price or talk down less.  If the seller is a kid versus an adult, or if they don't begin by stating something along the lines they want this gone,  I think I try to pay more for games.  I also try to pay more than competition in case someone has more games and calls / texts later, that way the competition doesn't try to persuade them to be called instead.

I am also more likely to buy a lot of common games if I get a harder to find one in the process.  For example, this morning someone had a Raiden Project PS1 complete for $2.  Instead of buying just that one, I bought 6 for $10, including games I would not have bought otherwise as $10 was more than fair for Raiden Project and Resident Evil 2.  So I ended up with some filler games I do not believe I have that I normally wouldn't have paid more that a buck for - Pitfall 3D, Activision Classics, Wipeout XL and a disc only Wii Sports Resort (the 'free game').

I did start recently to pay more than asking price if the deal is stellar (as long as the seller isn't rude) and I hope to continue this trend as I do not want to feel bad about something.

For items in less demand, such as comics or magic and pokemon cards, I tend to negotiate a lot more as those items are more condition sensitive and people usually have a better idea of what the actual value is.

That being said, this is just my opinion and I do not blame anyone for getting a cheap price as long as they aren't being an obvious jerk.

I do not believe its right to snake a deal (being the first one there in cutting in line, offering more than someone is trying to negotiate for), 'spreading out' over items, trying to resell what you buy on the spot, using one of the cliche'd lines that isn't true that we have all heard, and many other jerk like things that I am sure we've all seen.

**Edit**'

I didn't realize Raiden Project was a $50+ game.  I thought it was half that max.

I never thought of paying more than the competition. Tell me more of these cliche'd lines. I've never seen someone offer more for an item or resell on the spot

"Its for my grandkids / I buy them to give away" etc etc.  I think this was discussed on this board a few pages back.

As for paying for more, I had an extremely unpleasant experience last year with competition who was extremely rude to me and the people running the yard sale.  I had another unpleasant experience earlier this year with someone who was not happy that I arrived just before they did (i was maybe 30 seconds earlier and walking up to the sale when they pulled up).  Both of these people attempted to buy the games out from under me by grabbing the games while I was looking (I was pulling money from wallet as I was talking to the seller) or bending over a box while I was trying to take games out.

To counter I have begun offering a few more dollars than my competition does.  It has led to more people holding stuff for me (if the games are not all out yet I buy what I want without negotiating and if I come back later, they will not sell to new stuff to someone else) and more people taking my number for later.  It has also led to more people saying they will look for games for me as it becomes more worth their while (this happened late last year, initially I was told no to game stuff, bought something for more than they expected, than next thing I know they suddenly had more game stuff - that had a large amount of Pokemon games that they found and sold to me) .  This has been especially beneficial at community sales where people arrive early and not everyone has their games out.

It doesn't help that the area I am in is full of 'game guys'.  It gets ridiculous some mornings as I have heard stories that people are knocking on doors at 6am or earlier (earliest someone told me was someone woke them up before 4am at a Community sale that advertised games).

I get salty whenever I show up at a sale and see someone just picking up some games, but I would never attempt to buy them out from under someone.

I'll just curse my luck under my breath and spend the rest of the day wondering what they got.

I hate people that throw any sense of common decency and manners out the window to get games.

I sometimes have yard sales and sell games at them if I want to offload some titles I no longer want... I swear if someone rang my doorbell early in the morning before I opened, I would literally tell them to fuck off and not bother coming back once I did open.
