everybody making fun of him is just jealous they don't have 3000 to spend on a gaming laptop

if i made enough money to justify it i'd buy one because why not

yes I am missing out on all the high-end gaming I could be doing during all of my international travel, stays at five star resorts, and luxury cruises.

I've only tinkered with League for the last year. I didn't know that was a thing. Looked like it was a good thing while it lasted.
It was, most of the time whenever I needed rp for a skin I would just play a daily 5v5 and get some quick rp.

I didn't spend any money on League of Legends, I have some friends from the tournament that have enough RP to last over the next 5 years if they only bought legendary/ultimate and limited time skins.

And you know someone has to ask since it was brought up before, do you really need to game like that on the go?

For 2500$ you could buy a kick ass gaming desktop and monitor and still have money left over for a fairly good laptop, but not a gaming one.
No one talks to "The Donald" like that! Build a wall around this peasant!

A lot of people (most really) who buy gaming laptops do so because of space issues.  They don't have the room or want to make room for the tons of wires and set up of a desktop.  Especially if you are in a dorm environment or in a house where you want to be able to put up the computer out of the way when not using it.

Considering this is a forum where people typically seem to have between 1-4000 games (not counting if people own consoles), around 95% of which they'll never play, I guarantee if money wasn't an issue majority of the forum would have a gaming laptop whether it's needed or not

Some people (younger people) just don't like desktops, either. Couldn't convince my younger brother to get a desktop, even though he likes gaming. He bought a gaming laptop and when that was kind heavy to lug around, he bought a $300 laptop for school and stuff. He's pretty happy with his setup.

So I'm thinking of getting a Gaming laptop and these were just announced with the new GTX 1000 series cards. Not looking to go crazy but what do you guys think, I'm leaning towards the cheaper one just cause money but the other is tempting. And before you ask the ones with 1080 are MSI and more expensive hence I am leaning towards ASUS ROG laptop.

$2,999

ASUS ROG G752VS-XB78K OC Edition

or

$2,499

Anyone have experience with ASUS ROG?
Holy crap @ those beasts. Those looks awesome, but ultra-expensive.

For gaming laptops & travelling needs: I think I'll just stick with my Acer Nitro V gaming laptop (i7 Haswell; 4GB 960M; 16 GB RAM; W10), thanks. Most games for me are at with Medium Settings at 900p or 1080p with either 30FPS/60FPS on my 15 1/2 inch monitor, which will depend per game (of course).

EDIT:

I also highly recommend using the second bay for a SSD.
@CAG Boards

Okay, I've been thinking about going SSD for quite some time.

So, what are some recommendations people have for SSD's around here?

If a person just needs one PC, wants to be able to play games, and needs portability then it makes sense to get a gaming laptop. While some higher-end laptops are beasts sometimes a better term for those mid-range options might be gaming-capable laptops, though the new line of GTX 10 chips is a pretty big game-changer.

Samsung seems to be the most popular option for SSDs these days. Prices have gone down considerably, though part of that might be the use of TLC vs MLC (TLC is cheaper to manufacture but has lower life/cycles expectancy). This is a good breakdown of the differences:

Yeah, and if money weren't an issue, I'd also have a new car each week, houses selected for seasonal appropriateness AND whether or not they match my clothes, a fleet of aircraft and luxury ocean liners as well as a staff the size of a small nation to see to my needs and the needs of my staff.

Oh, did I ever tell you guys my Domino's tip?

For toppings, "extra" and "double" are two different things but are both charged the same.

That is, "extra cheese" and "double cheese" are charged as 1 topping, but "double cheese" should have more cheese than "extra".

I know others recommend Samsung, but they come at a premium for their performance. If you haven't ever tried an SSD, then any modern SSD will feel lightning fast. You won't really even notice a significant difference between say a Sandisk vs a Samsung SSD in real world usage.

To give you a reference price, there was a decent deal during Prime day for a SanDisk Ultra II 480GB SATA III SSD. It's TLC and went for $94.99. By Black friday, there could potentially be even better deals on higher quality SSDs.

Also, Samsung isn't perfect either despite their popularity. I purchased a Samsung 840 EVO 2 years ago, and apparently that model had performance issues the longer you had it. They bandaged the inherent hardware problem with a firmware fix, but I'm still salty that the supposedly great 840 EVO was a defective product.

I don't think the 850 EVO series has any issues like that though.

Wasteland 2 doesn't really count as that's from idling (I haven't had a chance to play it yet), hence doing the top 11 instead of top 10.

As you can see I don't really get into super long games or F2P/MP. I probably logged ~250 hours of Quake Live over a few years before the move to Steam. Portal 2 playtime includes solo and co-op campaigns. Enjoyed XCOM but got to a point where I felt like I got enough out of the game. Dishonored took way too long probably because I played stealth/no-kill and save scummed. Similarly I save scummed STALKER due to some tough parts of the game. Lastly I did quite a bit of the challenges/riddles/etc. in Arkham City. Wanted to 100% it but gave up.

I'm more curious exactly what it is with Detroit and cheap pizza. Both Dominos AND Little Caesars are Detroit chains.

Yeah, I agree it's strange and I live in Detroit. Good news is that in the city we all eat Jets or Buddy's which is square thick-crusted with a great crunchy crust. Its also more expensive though, so maybe thats why our cheapo franchises are the ones that spread.

1)  If you're going to go SSD, Samsung Evo.  Period.  I'm running 2 of them in my gaming laptop and 3 in my desktop.

2)  Gaming laptops have their place.  I have my rig (which has a 1070 in it) but I travel a LOT... so I have my gaming laptop as well.  My issue with gaming laptops will forever be the inability to upgrade them.  FFS, you'd have thought they'd have come up with a consistent transfer so I could plug a desktop video card into it by now.

3)  I never go $2K+ into a gaming laptop.  It isn't ever my mainstay and realistically they need to be re-bought in 2-3 years ANYWAYS.  But... ROG is a good brand.  It's more bang for you buck than most any other gaming brands (except MSI... but I don't really KNOW them anymore)

4)  Who the heck are you guys?  I see people with games left and right.. you throw money at "deals" and never play them.  Well I'd rather buy a decent rig and only a couple of games.

And for those tracking my NMS progress.  3 star systems tonight.  14 planets, only 1 that had any meaningful plant life.  6 were martian red, 2 purple, 3 ice/gray.  Only 1 planet had trees.  1 had giant leaves.  The rest were all mushrooms.  Almost every form of life had horse hooves.  3 of them were Sentinel harassment planets.

What the last guy said,  if you're new to SSD no reason to get the most expensive one.   Get a 250-500gb Crucial or Scandisk and you'll get amazing performance for that value.

Don't forget Shield's pizza if you're willing travel 15 minutes outside of Detroit.

Papas's Pizza is decent too if we're talking about in Detroit only.

I've haven't found a decent Pizza Hut in Michigan after the one near me closed down.

The current best $$$-performance ratio that I have heard of was a $59 480GB OCZ Trion SSD at Frys. Man I would have loved to grab one

Stores near me have started stocking Crystal Pepsi.

Nostalgia is a Hell of a thing.

I want to throw up.

I'm pretty sure Pizza Hut stopped being decent after I stopped being able to get free pan pizzas for reading 5 books.

Yay BOOK IT! and the 1980s.

God bless the Choose Your Own Adventure books and many free personal pan pizzas.

I've seen a ton laptops die to due gaming, granted it was through a college deal and were "must buys" through some no name brand... but, man, did WoW melt a lot of motherboards.   Make sure you buy quality, but it still doesn't make sense to me when you can have one machine networked to display on every monitor/TV on the house, plus some sort of portable PC solution, for less than a gaming laptop and have more power.

I even kept a desktop throughout college, partially for gaming, partially to run software that crawled on a 1.4GHz Pentium single core processor... memories...

Between those two, the cheaper one for sure. 32 GB RAM is already overkill, and 256 GB extra hard drive space for $500 is absolutely not worth it.

But really, even that one is very expensive. Do you travel a lot? Will you really be playing games on the go or do you just want a beast laptop?

I have an older Asus ROG and never had any problems. The build quality is nice. It's very thick and heavy but that's standard for gaming laptops.
To be honest I want it just because and to game at work when I have free time. I have a desktop at home, i5-4670k, 12GB Ram, GTX 980ti, 6 Hard drives totaling 16.1 TB, 2 monitors (24" Asus VG248QE and 24" Dell SP2309W) that I use everyday for gaming. I don't travel much except yearly trip to Disney World for my daughter's birthday and with the 2nd due in Dec, my 1st biological child, I don't think I'll be traveling much for the next year or two. This is just primarily to game at work and feel like I'm home when it comes to running games on High or Ultra.

That's true but I want something to take on the "road". Plus I hate lights on my PC.
Those are really cool, but gaming laptops will always have an overheating problem. The parts will get really hot, especially since EVERYTHING is overclocked, and there's not enough room for adequate cooling. Imagine how small the heatsink is in this compared to a desktop, and it only has two fans and no liquid cooling. Frequent gaming will lead to parts wearing down pretty fast, not to mention the hinge casing has cracked on every laptop I've ever had. And the fact that even the best laptop parts are usually less powerful than desktop counterparts.

I can't really recommend laptop gaming, although if you wanted to, you could get a decent ~$800 laptop with a Thunderbolt port, then get a ~$400 desktop graphics card enclosure and a full desktop GPU to fit into it. You'd save at least $700, have a decent GPU that fits in desktop or laptop, and would have to spend less to replace other parts.

Because parts of Detroit look like Chernobyl. I hear they have real shitty cheap pizza there too.

Detroit, not Chernobyl:
