 Anime Steals and Deals

**It is highly recommended you check the latest posts in this thread as they will often have the most up to date deals. I will attempt to reflect these sales in the OP, but always check the latest posts.**

Rightstuf

Rightstuf runs studio sales every week, sometimes even twice a week. These range from anime, manga, and even artbooks. Prices are decent, and Rightstuf has amazing customer service. I highly recommend them for that alone.

You can save an additional 10% off a majority of their items (Including preorders) by buying their Got Anime membership

Amazon

Amazon tends to offer lower everyday prices on their anime, and often run sales on Funimation items routinely. Keep track on your favorites or check your daily deal's for a possible 5% off of some based off your history on Amazon.

(Also, I'd also recommend to check out Amazon's top 100 deals in Anime Bluray/DVD as they tend to show what's popular, or what is on sale.)

DVDPlanet / Deep Discount

Known by many for their bad customer service, they often make up for it with their lower prices on a lot of their items. This and they routinely run sales specifically for anime.

I highly suggest when you order from them to only order in stock items, and not ones that are backordered. Save yourself the displeasure of having to deal with the headaches. And patience is a must with these sites.

Cheapassgamer

Maybe you will find something here on our own forums! We have a thread dedicated specifically to Anime and Manga for sale from fellow Cags.

Oh, yeah, Escaflownase has that guy, I had forgotten (if you really want to know, just google real life person in escaflowne)

Just read that Skip Beat Kickstarter has been pushed back from October to Q1 2017. Frankly I was surprised it hadn't already been delayed; I've noticed that every single Kickstarter I've ever seen has wound up getting slightly delayed, even Shovel Knight.

I was wondering when that update would get sent around. It doesn't bother me as long as it comes out.

I'm guessing you were in the know a bit, me, I knew this was coming because of the lack of progress shown as we were supposed to get monthly behind the scenes stuff. Either way more time isn't a horrible thing to get a quality release.

Oct always felt like it was too quickly to release a quality dub.

I never expected Skip Beat! to release in October, right from the very start - especially with it being a full series AND getting a dub... So I'm fine with the delay, it's much better that it not be rushed, as I want to be sure it is done right. Heck, we're into the third year now waiting for Mai Mai Miracle to ship, so I've become well-conditioned to being very patient with anime Kickstarters, lol...

Not a huge deal, but I found the Code Geass pre-orders for $39.31 a piece on Barnes and Noble (S1 & S2). Definitely the cheapest I've come across, but possibly even cheaper when a B&N "tier" sale like a few months ago occurs again.

Kind of worried about ordering from them again, though. Bought Death Note and Akame 1 and 2 (Blu) from them and it was a miracle the items weren't damaged considering how the package looked like it was attacked by a dog and thrown off a cliff.

So $80 versus $105? Chipboard + artcards for $25 extra or not...
For me, it was ultimately dependent on preference of artwork used. I like what they used for the season sets much more than what's featured on the artbox. Plus I didn't feel like the cards were a good physical extra and not worth paying more for when all I would do is stash them away and never look at them again.

The Escaflowne movie should just be tossed away anyways.
It's worth watching once for the gorgeous animation. I also suggest picking up the Bandai LE instead of the FUNimation version since the former includes a soundtrack and a Yoko Kanno soundtrack is always worth the price.

As I said, I'm in it for the quality - the quality of the discs themselves, that is. I much prefer AoA's disc authoring practices, with the best PQ, least amount of compression artifacts, highest bitrates, and minimal episodes per disc. I buy a ton of JP imports specifically for this same reason, and AoA is the closest thing we got domestically to the disc quality of Japanese releases.

I do wish AoA would go back to doing more chipboard box sets rather than almost all singles now, but at least their singles come in side-load slipboxes and not those crappy o-card slipcovers with bare, cut edges which I hate so much. Their singles also fit perfectly into those stiff plastic steelbook protectors I buy for a lot of my anime, so they do look great all lined up on the media shelf in their crystal-clear boxes rather than unsightly shrinkwrap. I'm not a fan of trinkets, which just end up collecting dust and hogging up space, so a few art cards or a booklet is OK by me. Also, since I never use an English dub myself, and never watch any on-disc extras, if their releases happen to be lacking those I don't really care. A dub is only useful for me to show anime to friends, but is totally irrelevant to me. In contrast, Funi's poor disc authoring practices leave a lot to be desired; since I watch my anime on a 120" projection screen in my theater, you can really notice a difference.
Funi is on par with Media Blasters where authoring quality is concerned. Better than VHS, but not what a DVD really should be.

It is one of the best fantasy series ever made. I'd argue only Lodoss War (possibly Negima if they ever did a proper anime adaptation) is better.
Sad thing is that Pioneer / Geneon use to deliver us the same quality at about half the price.

Yes, and the soundtrack is gorgeous! I really miss Bandait Entertainment, they would often bundle one volume of an anime with the series soundtrack or at least a volume of it.

Lol, I had originally typed in my post that I rank Funi just above Media Blasters for quality, but then I removed that line before I posted - didn't want to piss off any Funi fanboys, heheh... but yeah, you're right about that. Although, I watch almost everything on Blu-ray, avoiding DVD if at all humanly possible - I really can't tolerate watching Standard Definition video any more, makes me want to claw my eyes out. But, Funi's Blu-ray authoring isn't very good, either.

I did pledge for the CE + Soundtrack CD in the Escaflowne Kickstarter, so I'll at least be getting a soundtrack for the series itself... I do like a lot of anime music, and have bought a dozen or so soundtracks on CD, but I just don't have a chance to listen to a lot of music anymore; about the only time I have for music is in my car when I'm traveling a few hours out of the local area for work - during my daily commutes I'm normally talking on my ham radio with other Hams also headed to and from work, so no chance to listen to music then. I'll sometimes listen to anime music on Youtube when on my computer in the evenings, but I actually find that somewhat distracting, so I don't do that too often.

I wasn't buying any anime from Hastings, but I had just recently started buying used 3D movies from them online for $8-$12 each, filling in some releases that I didn't want to spend regular 3D prices for... I'm glad I got a few orders shipped before they announced their closing...

Have a question for anyone who know about the Bandai version of Escaflowne. How is the Dub/Sub quality in terms of being accurate? Because I have the anime legends complete collection myself but I was wondering if I should upgrade to the new funimation release.

I should also probably rewatch the show since I barely remember it.

Can't speak for the dub quality, but the dub is usually considered subpar. I personally don't mind it and have heard dozens of worse dubs, but it isn't the greatest dub by Ocean Studios.

thanks. What about the quality of the sub? Do they change things, take liberties?

Sorry, misspoke. I mean I can't speak to the SUB quality. Haven't watched the sub in over a decade. There's probably a handful of lines that aren't translated as well as they could be since this was released in the early 2000's.

Actually, the original sub was released by Animevillage.com (which later became Bandai) wayyyyy back in 1998 on VHS (could've been 1997, but i saw it for rent at my local store in 1998

I still remember waiting by the phone to call in my order. Picked up the complete Escaflowne and the first volumes each of Saber Marionette J and Clamp Campus Detectives as they were something like $10 each.

RightStuf's weekly sale this time is for Discotek and Eastern Star titles. Up to 40% off with the code DISCOSTAR16.

Picked up Mazinger Impact and Lupin III: Napolean Dictionary. Was tempted to get Street Fighter, but $30 is still a bit more than I'm willing to spend on it and it'll probably be easily available for $20 later on.

People actually read books?! lol

I'm actually just getting it as a coffee table book or conversation starter. I already have the set which uses the "adult" covers.

Mine has been updated as well.  Though it still hasn't shipped, "We're gonna" is a lot better than "We don't have a listing for that anymore."

Time to trot this out again.

Don't celebrate just yet--Amazon did this once already, so until they actually ship the sets, I'm not holding my breath.
True. But last time they just pushed the date back. This time, it went from "we have no clue" to an actual date. So I'm a little more optimistic.

But you are right. They could very well pull the rug out from under us this time too. :(
