Tuned in late for the Playstation conference but saw some recaps.

I like the name PS4 Pro. Sounds better than calling it slim.  Can't comment on specs (What is HDR?) but it sounds like a good thing to get if you don't have a PS4 already. Otherwise, it's best to pass right now ... like I will. I'm quite happy with my Batman designed PS4 thank you very much.

As far as Xbox goes, sounds like we have an exciting console war ahead of us (especially with that Major Nelson tweet). I still say the next Xbox should be called the Xbox Dos .... spanish word for "two" and an homage to MS-DOS.

I'm still pulling for Nintendo and the NX though. They seem like the underdog right now so maybe this conference will get Nintendo to start revealing some news.  Apple partnership? No thanks.

PS4 doesn't have the appropriate spec built in to their HDMI port so I understand, so no 4k discs. Ironic since it's their spec(bluray).

It is the Neo. We just learned that it's official name is PS4 Pro.

It has 4.2 tflops of graphic power compared to the xbox one/one s' 1.3~ (original ps4 was 1.8~)

It has a lot more power. It supports vr, 4k gaming (not just streaming) hdr. Everyone seems to be comparing it to the one s for some reason. Now if you have a 4k HDR tv, you will see a huge benefit in the Pro. If you don't you can still utilize HD texture packs and the extra power to render the games more quickly in 1080p. Right now the PS4 Pro is over 3x more powerful than the xbox one. That's a huge gap

I understand that, but it doesn't shock me. From the beginning Sony has been more interested in building a console, while XBOX has tried to be a media center. I don't know the costs associated with having a UHD player, but if you have to drop something to keep the 399 priced tag, then I think that's the thing you drop.

I also understand this nixes what the Neo was thought to be and that the Scorpio will likely be much more powerful than any of these.

Then again we have no idea when it will come and the final specs on it.

Personally I see no need to upgrade either console until we at least see what Scorpio will ultimately offer. I could care less about 4K.

NHL Rewards can go screw themselves. I've tried signing up in different browsers on different computers and it never lets me submit the registration.
 
If you don't care about 4k then you never have to upgrade lol. Microsoft has already stated what Scorpio will offer, officially, when the slim came out.

So we have the specs, yes the neo is 6tflops, but we have no idea when it will come.

The Neo launches Nov 10th, and I think it's only 4tflops.
 
Anyone ever had to re-download the Preview Program app? My external hard drive died yesterday and I have been re-downloading my games, but I cannot find that app.

Edit: Ah nevermind, found it in my app and game in ready to install, I was trying to find it with the store and it was the wrong way.

Huh? I don't think I ever claimed that I knew any insider info, but if you've paid attention, you can get a good idea of what it's aiming for. It's a good bit more powerful than a PS4 Pro and is aiming to do true 4K gaming and PC-level VR along with that, which isn't cheap at all. The only way they can hit $400 is if they're willing to go into the red for it.

In contrast, the PS4 Pro is reasonably designed so that they can have an upgraded box that costs $400 and won't be bleeding tons of money at launch.

Ah, we were not speaking the same language, when you said design I think of the way the system will look, as in, the outward appearance. When you talk specs I think of that as the way it was "engineered" and not "designed". So when I was trolling your comment I was reading as you like the price and appearance of the PS4 Pro better than the price and appearance of the Scorpio which we don't have any pics of or a price for yet. Now you can see where I was coming from and I see where you were coming from.
 
I see two factors that led to the lack of 4K Bluray. The obvious thing would be cost. They managed to keep it at $400 and I'm sure that was a large focus. In theory games are the focus and they don't need this player. Second would be the more shady idea that they want people to buy their standalone Bluray players still, but if true it backfired with the Xbone S.

Bluray 4K isn't a big deal for me since I generally "rent" movies online. My only Bluray purchase so far that wasn't a $5 or less used copy was Evangelion 3.33, and I don't see my future anime purchases getting much mileage out of HDR alone and 4K is virtually non-existent. I only see that happening with 3D rendered stuff like the new Berserk. I'll probably get Force Awakens on Bluray during Christmas or something and I think I'll manage with my pitiful 1080p.

 
Should I get Ass Creed Rogue or Ass Creed India and Russia? I'm thinking Rogue is the better choice... I've heard it's more of black flag which I thought was great. Plus I have a new leather recliner in front of the tv my 360 is setup on while my Xbox one is in my living room... Decisions...

It IS an odd turnaround given that the PS3 played a large role in standardizing Blurays and had a slight emphasis (and arguably edge) on media capabilities last gen. Why push 4k if they don't support physical media? Very odd to me. It doesn't effect me because I don't care about 4k but still.

Assassin's Creed Rogue is fantastic. Set in the Northern Atlantic, I enjoyed it as a follow-up after playing Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. I highly recommend it.
 
I see Tales of Vesperia is not BC yet even though it's on sale again, fuck ers. I bought Peggle 2 because I saw the $3 price tag and thought what the hell, it's decent enough for $3.

I find it kind odd the PS4 Pro doesn't have a UHD drive. I mean they spent a lot of time pushing how good 4K looks but then they don't include a drive. Especially when 4k Blu Rays look better than streaming. Kinda seems like a missed opportunity there.

 
To go back on topic, is it worth it to sell my copy of Rogue (I think I'm only on sequence 3) and buy a digital version? I have a coupon from EB Games that gets me a $10 bump to whatever the regular price is.

If you end up saving a few bucks, I don't see why not. It's not like Assassn's Creed games retain value anyway.

And odder still that Sony is one of the major players pushing HDR 10 with their commitment to it in their TV and movie businesses. I would guess they likely have a stake in 4K BR as well. So you would think they have a vested interest in furthering the adaption of those two standards but who knows.

This. And it was the same with the PS2. The PS2 sold gangbusters in part due to it including a cheap DVD player when DVD players were generally more expensive. Same deal here. I have no idea why Sony isn't following their usual tactics, have they just gotten that arrogant that they think people will gladly shell out for an UHD player that's not an Xbone?

Awesome. It's rough, but a lot of fun. If you care about achievements, there's a bunch you can get pretty easily, most likely easier than playing the full release, and if you're on TrueAchievements, you get to brag about getting the achievements before anyone else (really high ratios at the moment). Also make sure to do a fight in the mode daily for those daily rewards.

Very true. Sony's always been more media and tech savvy in this regard. Using both companies systems and products, I've long held that Microsoft makes better software and networking (360 dash, XBL) and Sony makes nicer hardware (PS3 had done of audio options, media support, IMO the Vita is incredibly well designed but they abandoned it). They also have more invested in the media industry so I would expect them to continue these trends of pushing formats forward.

Especially since the whole point, seemingly, of both Neo and Scorpio is to future-proof the platforms without creating a whole new console. Not supporting physical media is antithetical to that, especially when you consider the fact that streaming HD or 4k content doesn't look nearly as good as when it's sourced off a disc or HDD. I watch HD Netflix all the time, but when I put in a Blu-ray I'm astounded by the difference in picture quality and color depth. Am I alone in this? HD streaming content looks very good, but Blurays look much crisper. I imagine 4k would be the same thing.

I'm sure Sony would like to sell more 4k TVs, what about 4k Blurays of Sony films... that will play great on your Xbox One S?!

The focus on 4k streaming is also odd to me because the US at least doesn't have great internet infrastructure for the bandwidth required.

Finally - the PS4 Pro uses up to 310w of power. Yeesh. That will definitely show up on your power bill.

No, you are not alone. Streaming will never be as good as physical media. And two, not everyone has a blazing fast interent connection.

 
When Sony includes a Blu-Ray on PS3 (and a DVD on PS2) and jack the price up, it's because "you don't understand, they are bleeding edge technology on all fronts." When they cheap out on the Pro by not including a 4k player, it's because "you don't understand, they focused on making a GAME CONSOLE first." Whichever way the wind blows, I guess. You can rest assured the same people saying "HA HA XBOX LOOKS LIKE SHIT" during the X1/PS4 launches will be back telling us how graphics don't matter when Scorpio hits.

Pac-Man CE2 being less on Amazon is a pleasant surprise and brings back memories of the brief, wonderful time where you could get really good deals on XBLA games via Amazon that weren't present on the Xbox.

13-2 is the ULTIMATE apology for the [censored] that was 13. It has a fair amount of stupid, idiotic, insulting, ridiculous, goofy nonsense that almost makes you miss Vanille from 13, but at its heart it's everything 13 should have been.

Lightning Returns is whatever. If you've got this far you have to play it, but it's such a stupid game. They knew people would buy it regardless, and boy does it show. Textbook example of phoning in a sequel, Force Unleashed 2 is now off the hook.

I pay about 13.5 cents a Kwh. So 4 hours a day for 365 days is about $62. Or $5 and change a month. I think the national average is 12 cents a Kwh but other places are higher. I was paying 22 cents in my first apartment IRC.

The more powerful the computer/console the more power it will draw. I bet Scorpio will be even more. Gaming PCs use much larger power supplies to accommodate the extra power requirements.

Screw it, I decided to just buy Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata. Maybe having them on the HDD instead of a disc will get me to finally revisit them. Backwards compatibility would be amazing.
