Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Impression of MYTH:

I'm honestly not really liking it. Just weird, weird, and more weird. I am I think possibly 60-70% though it. I really don't have too many impressions, but it's a very hard story to follow. It keeps jumping around and i'm finding it hard to keep my attention. I will finish it, but so far not a great impression from me.

This discussion has convinced me to wait as well for the sale on Dusk haha! Would you get Ayesha if it went on sale for 19.99 which I think it did before or are you going to wait for the huge package with all 3 bundled? I feel that might not come out as early and getting 1 by 1 may be better? As for the PS4 versions I probably wont play them until after Dusk just cause I like going in order even though it's a totally different story >.<
I bought ayesha new for 23$ the same day it dropped to 12$ ;_;

What I said exists and you will see it when you get that far. I'm just purposely vague on a lot of things to not give away spoilers, but clear enough that people who've played it should understand what I'm getting at.
I'm honestly more interested in what cold steel 3 is gonna be about if anything.

It's begun! They finally got to Japan.

If you play through Cold Steel II, you could make a decently educated guess based on the Finale scenes and what's shown after. It'll contain Cold Steel II end game spoilers, so I really don't recommend reading it unless you've beaten the finale of Cold Steel II bare minimum.

  • First possible scenario is Ouroboros vs Osborne. You would likely come in as a third party to put a stop to both sides.
  • Second possible scenario is You (Non-affiliated side) vs Osborne. This one has the highest chance of painting Rean as a villain initially I think. He could also be MC in this scenario.
  • Third possible scenario is Church (You) vs Osborne. Potential different MC that's sided with the church. aka a Gralsritter. Similar fashion to Trails in the Sky the 3rd.
  • Fourth possible scenario Ouroboros vs Osborne vs Church. Battle royale with high stakes. Winner takes all.
  • Rean may or may not be the main character and we will find out more about his past and the origins of his "ogre" power. If he's not the main character, I feel like there's a chance her could be part of the Osborne faction at the beginning before joining your group. Even if he is the MC, I could still see that happening where you start as the bad guy at the beginning. Him being a villain would be an awesome decision I think given the events in Cold Steel II.
  • It's extremely unlikely you will have everybody in your party from the first two games, but they will all likely return in some form even if a non-playable cameo.
  • Most likely returning party members (even if temporary/short) would likely be Laura, Emma, Gaius, Millium and Fie. Maybe even Sara, Claire & Toval. Scarlet and Altina are also possibilities.
  • I think there's a good chance we will see some characters from Trails of Zero/Azure in playable form such as Lloyd. We may even get Estelle and/or Joshua depending on what they've been doing the last year or so.
  • Possibly Kevin and his squire Ries as well with some serious church involvement. If not those two, then other Gralsritter, such as Barkhorn or [customspoiler='CS2 NG+ Spoilers']Professor Thomas (with his squire, Rosine)[/customspoiler]. Ein would be awesome to see in action too and it would be great to see a "Oh shit, it's you!" conversation between her and Toval.
  • I give it about a 50/50 chance that Sharon will actually be a villain this time around if Ouroboros is involved as I don't see Alisa being playable. My excuse for her being a villain would be the Grandmaster asking her to help. And she'll still somehow find the time to perform her maid duties.
  • Rean may be a Bracer or end up as one through the course of the game, even if it's just a decision at the very end. I don't really see him joining the Church's faction, but that's also a possibility.

My view may change after I've played Trails in the Sky the Third next spring. I feel like it'll have some direct connections to that story.

EDIT: Made some changes to my spoiler list.

I thought they said reans the main character still in cold steel 3? Guess its not confirmed according to the gematsu article. Though at the very least they confirmed rean is in the 3rd game and that he and a few other characters are all getting new models. Sucks majorly that it will possibly be ps4 exclusive. though since I own a ps3 version I'm screwed either way save carry over wise unless they don't do that with the 3rd game. I hope at the very least they do a vita version as a fallback option.

We do not know who the main character will actually be yet. The only information as of right now is a poster that shows Rean's front and back. We also don't know how long its been since the end of Cold Steel II either. Rean looks a whole lot less happy in the promo image compared to Cold Steel I & II. I just hope it redeems him as a character. Japan seems to really like him for whatever reason though as he's consistently voted high on male character polls for the Kiseki/Trails games.

Also, if they do allow clear data to carry over it can still be done cross-platform. Just put in a patch to Cold Steel II that allows you to upload a single Clear Data save of your choosing to the cloud and then when you begin a new game of Cold Steel III on any platform, let the player choose to pull an uploaded save down from the cloud. Alternatively they could also make it read a specific trophy from Cold Steel II.

I don't see the Data Import being as important as say TitS FC -> SC, Zero -> Azure or Cold Steel I -> II. It would be more like TitS SC -> the 3rd which would just give you some Sepith and an accessory more than likely.

Save data on the PS3 can be imported into the PS4, Borderlands Handsome Collection has it, as an example.

Even more MYTH impressions:

This is still a weird VN. I'm starting to get how all the strings are coming together, though one or 2 characters I still can't quite place or some other things. I'm at the end stretch of this one and it's getting better although i'm not crazy about it. Also the adult content is honestly pretty garbage for what I've seen so far. You don't need those scenes to get the full experience of the game. There are very few choices in this game, but
there is a huge reason in the game for very little choices. Play and you'll know.
It's a very unique VN, and really causes you to think some. I couldn't sleep last night thinking about the game, though I needed to sleep. I should finish it today and will give a final impression of the game. I'm not crazy enjoying it but it's keeping me thinking and wanting to plow throw. Couldn't say the same for Dracu Riot, which I struggled through the last 3 endings I got.

This should easily win the "At least we tried" award...

Vita games are starting to look like a 3DS games when compared to the PS4 version.

The gap is simply getting wider :whistle2:
It's be expected from a handheld device that was initially released in 2011. PS Vita to the PS4 is what PSP became for the PS3. Unless they decide to overhaul the Vita for future games, my guess is it'll go the way of the PSP where it gets mostly niche releases until people quit making games for it. Of course, it's the console I play the most.

Zero Escape: The Nonary Games coming out next year for PS4 and Vita. Includes 999 and VLR.

Where is the pc release at tho
Boot Excel 2000
Under file menu, do 'Save as Web Page'
Say 'Publish Sheet' and 'Add Interactivity'
Save to some htm page on your drive.
Load the htm page with IE. You should have Excel in the middle of the page.
Scroll to row 2000, column WC. Select row 2000, and tab so that WC is the active column.
Hold down Shift+Crtl+Alt and click the Office logo in the upper-left.

jk, it'll probably just come a little later. Did ZTD launch same day on PC?

ZTD did come out the same day, maybe this bundle is exclusive to Sony

MYTH final impressions:

I knew I was at the end. Finished within an hour of starting the last part. There were some interesting characters for sure and the game was very weird and somewhat freaky. I honestly wouldn't recommend it unless you really like weird mystery stories. There is just a lot going on and I don't want to spoil anything. The ending wasn't that awesome ,although it did make sense. It had an interesting ending nonetheless, although I felt that they skipped over a plot point that was occurring and just didn't really finish the story. The climax just kind of appeared and I was like...ummm where is this and that and that stuff unfolding and it just ended. I almost made sure there was no more to the story, but frankly there wasn't anymore acts. This game feels strongly Doujin and doesn't really have music all the time, and sometimes no voices....I even forgot if there was voices but I think it was only sometimes. The graphics were basic but set the mood pretty well. As I said before the adult version stuff doesn't matter and actually somewhat detracts from the story. I would rate the game maybe 5.5 out of 10. For most of the game I wasn't following the story well and frankly increased my read speed near the end because I lost a lot of interest in the story, although there was a part near the end where I was gobbling up the story. I need a palette cleanser VN next...

Thanks, I really enjoy these adult VN reviews! I never get to play them, and I don't think I can run them on my computater either. Actually, if I might try one soon, where is a good place to start? Again, these reviews are awesome, there is a great use of serious language when describing the lewd contents that makes it pretty funny to read. Also, I see what you did there... "Climax just kind of appeared", "I was gobbling up the story."

Haha those were chosen words, but there only 2 adult scenes in the whole game....and one was so poorly done.

Honestly it all depends on what you want from a VN. I prefer Romance and Comedy myself.

Honestly one of the games were I enjoyed and felt the scenes were all necessary was the Fruit of Grisasia. Excellent story and the 2nd one needs to be finished already for an uncensored release. I refuse to play that one censored. I don't specifically play the VNS for those type of scenes, but if an original release had them, I'd prefer to play them as intended. There is some good Nukige with fun stories and characters. I quite like Imouto Paradise and Funbag Fantasy. I need those sequels now haha.

I just like VN in general. It's my equivalent of reading books, and I read pretty quickly, so it's fun to go through all the routes and such.

I agree with that too but we're reaching the point where if there's 2 versions of the game (PS4 & VITA) and you're getting it on VITA just because you "like" the vita more.. you're doing yourself a disservice.

^ That is just atrocious... Not only because it's SAO :D/

But because Holy fucking Frames Batman!

Yeah, I can't and won't argue with the fact that the PS4 version is always the superior version of any release that comes out. I usually pick the Vita version due to the fact I do much more handheld gaming than I do on the console. I know that at one point the PS4 will be my only choice unless PCs continue getting more releases. I played SAO: Hollow Fragment way more on the PS4 than the Vita. Granted the release I initially got was the Chinese release, but I found it much easier to put time into than on the handheld. I followed it up with Lost Song and it was damn near impossible to follow all of that flying around on such a small screen. I doubt I'll get Hollow Realization on release day, and then will more than likely be purchased on PS4 only. I'd say 80% of my Vita purchases have been exclusives.

**Edit** This link looks a little better.

Remember in the gameboy days when developers would actually make a completely separate game that's actually designed for the portable consoles, instead of just a shitty downgrade of the console version. I miss that. It made handhelds special.

You guys complaining about Vita versions of games...I don't think the issue is with the Vita so much as the port quality. Look at WoFF Vita. Runs great, looks good. DQB reportedly does as well, as did Digimon to my knowledge. Odin Sphere Vita is another dual release from this year that looks and runs great on Vita. Firis and SAO seem more like low-end outliers than typical examples to me.

I don't mind Vita experiences, though the gap is starting to be bigger between the PS4 and Vita release. I will have to think about that future Akiba game, Fate and maybe a few others. Akiba I'll likely get the PS4 release....but yeah generally going for the PS4 editions these days.

Pretty much this. When they put effort into it the ports turn out well.

I still get the Vita version because it's usually cheaper, and the way my life is structured right now I can only get on PS4 about 10% of the time I'm able to play on Vita.

Did not see a Dengeki Additional Colors for the PS4 version, however all their DLC says that it is cross-buy. So you should be able to purchase the PS3 DLC and there should hopefully be a download for the PS4 version. If not then, I'm sure it'll be up later and I'll edit it in.

Yeah, it works fine...until the medal machines decide to spit out the ultra rare MemoryCorruptormon medal and everything goes black.

Seriously, nightmares to this day. ;_;

The Vita is weaker that an already weak PS4. Of course games will look and run worse on it. Most of the Atelier plus games run even worse than their PS3 counterparts and Digimon is 30 vs 60 FPS.

What does run great or looks good mean? Is there a resolution, texture, or effects difference? Do they run at different frame rates? Are there more frequent frame rate drops? Specifics are the bread and butter of these discussions.

Without technical details, I generally can take a CAG's word for "runs great on the Vita". Unless it is utterly jarring like the SAO video shown above (in which case I believe no CAG would call it "runs great on the Vita"), I can tolerate the hit in texture and frame rate drops, it is a handheld, after all.

Excellent. Now to form a MLG team and go pro.
Be sure to get one of the officially licensed PS4 Elite Pro Controllers that will make you the top Senran Kagura MLG player in the block beach.

First look at two new licensed pro controllers for PS4

Now... How am I going to convince my friends who are into military shooters to buy this game instead...
By telling them the tides are changing and it's time to jump ship. Just look at Splatoon last year with how well it did and this year with Overwatch and all the waifus it included. Senran Kagura in 2017 will be the 3rd year in a row that waifu shooters will once again dominant and leave shooter games like Call of Duty and Battlefield fighting for 2nd place.

hrng... why did it have to be Rice Digital announcing this. I have all the previously released versions of this series and my collection sickness makes me want this one as well but I haven't bought anything from RD ever since the shipping price hike to 20 pounds.

Curious as to how the rest of you on the same collector's boat as me have been handling it

Marvelous themselves announced it, Rice Digital is just reporting on it.

Pretty much this. Once they started charging $30 shipping I said fuck it and stopped ordering from them. Looks like it hasn't really harmed their business unfortunately as the CEs they offer still seem to sell out without going on discount.
