Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I know niche games don't take full advantage of the systems (other than blockbuster non-niche games like FFXV), but really the PS3 and Vita are just lacking a bit in power period. We are starting to see poorer and poorer Vita ports such as I Am Setsuna and the new SAO game. I'd much prefer Vita games like Mary Skelter specifically made for the system. I've been playing these games forever so I just would like to see them try harder to get the better technology involved. Disgaea 5 really amped up some things by moving to PS4, and it would be nice to see other games do this too. I can only imagine what the Tales games would be like if the same engine used for the bunch of PS3 games was put aside a bit. Of course those games coming out annually makes them reuse so many assets, so there is an issue there. I enjoy niche games a lot more than the fancier AAA games and at one time they really pushed the genre such as how beautiful Chrono Trigger was at the time or such. Just hoping for a better, less cashed in future is all.
tales of games don't come out yearly like sports titles. You only feel that way since we've been backlogged localization wise so we're still getting games years after japan got them. If you paid attention to releases you'd notice there was a 3 year gap between xillia 2 and zestiria for example.

They do reuse the xillia engine too much but I would like to point out that its due to them closing tales studio and not having multiple teams anymore. Prior to xillia every games engine was always different due to games being worked on 2 at a time by different teams. Ignoring that xillias engine is a fault of itself. If you were arguing going back to vesperias engine and improving it you'd have a point since that one actually used the systems to their fullest. It cut costs down thus why we are able to get more titles released even if the quality has taken a significant cut as well. Then there's the last 4 tales of games were sequel/prequels instead of the enhanced ports they used to do. So they had to be closer release wise and of course they reused alot of assets between them logically to cut costs even further. Honestly, I almost miss the enhanced ports to the current situation.

The xillias and on can't even handle base and mid spells going off multiples at a time or fighting the number of mobs that they do. Nor have they had any arcane spells since tidal waves last appearance all the way back in xillia. aoe size for the artes and spells has also taken a significant hit.

and lol at disgaea series. They could probably still run those on a ps2 >.>

On the note of poor releases like sword art online I highly doubt that's the vita's fault it looks like ass.  To me that screams lazy cash in and as you well know licensed games are rarely good. And that's without factoring in the sao series has been halfassed by bamco since the first game.

Think it's time to for me to play Overwatch PC more and hopefully Titanfall 2. I'm so glad they made Overwatch ultimates cost more. I don't mind abilities but seeing ultimates too often made a lot of the game unfun. Course I've been out of it for about 2-3 months so I'm sure i'll be messed up by everyone playing Genji or whatever the hot thing is now.

Why we talking bout movies when this is the JP Niche games topic, lol. Anyways, excited for Future Tone's localization, that being a miracle to come out. Though that's nice that it is coming, I still have PDF, F2nd, and X all on backlog, so...yeah.
I think at this point, anything close to Japanese is fair game for discussion. It's only a matter of time until we delve into Japanese Food, Japanese Cars, Japanese History, and Japanese Porn.

Actually, let me tack on something else just because it's Miku:

Gamestop Hatsune Miku Play Arts Kai Tetsuya Version Action Figure $120 $70 (Been looking at this for a while, doesn't look amazing, especially the face, but the Play Arts are usually high quality and this is the cheapest I've seen it.)

Went onto the stream late but I think they said persona 5 delayed until April 4th, Japanese voices will be available at launch as free dlc.

Persona 5 delay is actually somewhat of a net benefit for me. I probably wouldn't have time to play it until around the end of April anyway when summer break starts for me, so I'll just take the free theme and avatars that are out today as well as the Japanese voice overs and be happy about it.

I don't know about anyone else but i'm having a heck of a time playing games. Been working on Criminal Girls 2 a lot....but really haven't played much else.

If they were adding let's say... PRO SUPPORT!

I'd be more comfortable with it... but voices... seems like a bullshit excuse for a delay.

But I want Persona 5 NOW.   fuck !  Now it's another five months away again.  Been waiting for this game for-e-ver.  I don't even care about the other games I am interested in.

One could always start playing the Trails series starting with Trails in the Sky if they feel there's nothing in between to play. Can pretty much guarantee that you wouldn't finish those very quickly. Depending on ones speed, it could potentially take you until the release of Persona 5.

It doesn't hurt to try.

Persona was definitely my most anticipated game, even more so than Final Fantasy.

But if we get to have dual audio now, i guess i can take the 2 month delay.

On the bright side, February isn't a dry month. Nioh & Horizon Will be plenty enough to play through.

Had Persona stuck to its original release, i think February would've been the best month of the first half of 2017.

Well Japan is doing Japan washing with Full Metal Alchemist, so it's all fair.

Except made in Japan live action anime adaptions are usually awful while Hollywood made GitS looks great.
I've seen people bitch that it looks too true to the material  These same people were expecting it look like DB Evolution, instead of this, where everyone working on it seems to give a shit about what their working on.

Hollywood can make a great live action anime adaption when they try. After all,
I thought Speed Racer was great

Does Edge of Tomorrow count as an anime adaption? Either way it was better than anything Japan could have done.

Edge of Tomorrow was loosely based on the Light Novel. I expect Adam Wingard's upcoming Death Note film to an interesting take the material.

Japanese voices for P5, hell to the yeah. Now I don't have to import it just for the Japanese voices like I did with God Eater.

Everyone should take note of their Japanese voice cast, definitely a all-star line up.

Yeah, it's an interesting take to say the least.

I think they had to do this since every voice actor is on strike. I'm pretty sure everyone is voiced by Kiefer Sutherland at the moment.

I have (and barely played Horizon 3) but what's the easiest way to find things like this? Seems like searching through the lists would take forever.
I forgot which Nissan this was so I'll figure that out maybe tonight.

Unfortunately the only way I was able to do it was to basically search for "Miku" whenever I had a car selected in the garage. Most of them turned up empty but this was the only skin for a car I could find for the ones I unlocked. There were a few that had her color scheme though.

That Persona 5 delay sucks....guess I'll just continue struggling to understand what is happening in my import copy until April then... But the dual-audio confirmation is great news!

I'll be downloading that Ryuuji PS4 theme later today as well. It'll join the female P5 cast themes that I bought off the JP PSN store. :)

Also on a side note, I'm really enjoying Fate/Extella but am kinda disappointed in the way they handled character models (in the PS4 version). Characters just look like upscaled Vita quality models....which kinda makes sense since there's a Vita version of the game too, but still.... I wish they looked better.

Go into the paint shop > apply decal > search decals with descriptions like anime or miku > when you find a decal you like lookup the creator they will have all the car designs that they have shared as well the decals they have shared.

There weren't enough designs for cars I owned in horizon 3 so I just downloaded as much decals I could plastered them on my cars. Bad thing is it's not easy to copy and paste a design onto new cars.

The super easiest thing to do get the anime design cars is to buy cars with anime designs already shared for it as it will be one of the top recommended paintjobs for it at purchase. Looking up creator shared designs is the easiest way to find out which cars already have designs for them. You can buy any car available in the game through the autoshow. At the festival site.

Here's my two best designs. Can't be shared though, since only the originator creator of the decal can share designs that use that decal.

This game has been teased for years now, and all of these little video snippets and teasers are not helping matters.  I was patient before and I was patient during the most recent delay. Now I am just overly irritated with all of these "Hey look at how cool we are!" trailers and marketing videos.

It's a bad look.  And now Atlus just seems super pretentious.

That was a base 2003-2005 nissan 350z or 'Fairlady Z' if it's the Japanese version.
Great car.
