Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Hmm, according to front page of the site it looks like Fate/Extella for Vita is on sale for $26.48 on Amazon.

Tempting, but I'll be getting the game for the Switch so I'm not sure I need the Vita version...
If you're getting the switch version, just skip the vita version entirely. Switch includes all the costume dlc, of which there's a considerable amount. Also the vita version doesn't look that good visually.

I happened to find the last copy of blue reflection deluxe edition at BIC Camera today.[attachment=26515:IMG_3795.JPG]

I haven't played Persona 5 in three days because I've been caught up playing Dragon Warrior II on the NES.   This was the most amazing game in the world when I was a small child.  It's so draconian and punishing, yet still somewhat fair and heavily adventurous. It keeps you wanting to discover more, what's around the next corner.  It was the original Dark Souls formula.

Games like Dragon Warrior II and the original Final Fantasy shaped my entire gaming personality to date.  I'm all about open-world RPG exploration with hidden loot and sidequests.  This game was such an amazing step up from DW1 at the time in 1990.  It was revolutionary.  I have been in awe of difficult RPGs ever since.  Not to mention it also has some of the greatest box art of all time.

Images above taken from Gu4n. If you've played Trails in the Sky, you probably recognize them. Can't have one without the other. The time skip from TitS should make that person a year older than Estelle during the first game I think. The other being almost 30 now.

I bought 3rd a few days ago and just last night was able to get back to playing SC. I couldn't be more hyped for some games right now. PC gaming has taken over my attention lately. My poor PS4 has become a Netflix machine for now.

Thanks for the pics. I'm so excited for the CSIII release.

The only notable game this week is really Birthdays the Beginning and reviews seem to be all over the place for it. Other than that, not much to say. I added a couple that seemed like they might release this week since the list was a little on the light side. Granted one was more for the 'wat' nature of it. Normally I skip games that don't have a static release date set. I guess it's time to decide whether or not to cancel your Akiba's Beat price mistake order from Amazon since that releases next week though.

Other stuff that released without warning last week (Assume PC unless otherwise noted):
- Lily of the Valley (Visual Novel)
- England Exchange (Visual Novel)

I started my merciless run of persona 5. I didn't carry anything over so I could give a 100% run a go. Pretty excited to attempt that.
So far I haven't noticed it being any harder yet. I do think having 3x damage for critical/weakness/technical hits is really weird. demon negotiation is clutch, get these enemies that can potentially kill me to give me money and exp and just go away lol
I have one more midboss to fight but I'm all out of mana even though I stocked up well on sp items, 12 drinks and 2 coffees. I'll probably just use the chewing soul I picked up to force my way through this dungeon in 1 day.
I'm only level 7 while I was level 12 on my hard playthrough, guess that's the difference when you go into the dungeon multiple times.

Update: I did finish that dungeon. I didn't even need mana for that fight since I got 2 critical. It helped to take out some other mobs though.

I'm actually a good way through Trails in the Sky the 3rd. I see now that people calling it Trails of Lore isn't an exaggeration at all. Holy shit has it been a ride with all the information they've dropped. You've got a ton of setup for Cold Steel, including what happened in North Ambria where Sara from Cold Steel is from. There's also some setup for whenever they visit Calvard as well as Crossbell. Also even more closure for the Trails in the Sky FC/SC arc. As well as backstories for various characters in the series.

I also got to fight a boss that I've been wanting to while playing through TitS FC/SC and it was every bit as awesome as I thought it would be. It was the second fight I wiped on and actually wiped twice as retry didn't get me anywhere. I was forced to re-evaluate all my equipment and orbaments. Played insanely defensively and I still had two characters die with the other two barely living. It was pretty crazy.

But in the end the game is structured very differently from the previous two games. It's essentially a dungeon crawler with a bunch of optional mystical doors you can go through after you meet their requirements and see a metric assload of lore. I hear the last chapter is a wild ride too, so I can't wait for it. I liked Persona 5, but for me this game blows it out of the water in terms of enjoyment. Being invested in the series definitely makes this game quite the joy to play through.

Oh and in this one you don't need to worry about using a guide to find books or gather AP. You don't have hidden items like all the other games in the series, no hidden quests, nor is there any kind of point system like bracer points or academy points. It's a pretty nice relief.

Doing the dungeon in 1 day was pointless! I can't beat the boss at level 7! Went back into the palace another to grind to level 9 smh

Do you people have jobs/school that have already sunk 200 hours into P5? I don't tHink I hit 60 yet but I am following the guide to minimize wasted time.

If I wanted to play with some TiTs (lol), about how much time will I have to put into them?

I thought it takes 2 days since you have to reach the treasure first and then leave the calling card.

I haven't played Persona 5 in a significant way for about 2 weeks, largely because I've been so busy.

Shame about the first part considering most people already played the cold steel games so this is too little too late. Nice about them getting rid of the stupid hidden quests and crap. Too bad that won't likely be present in cold steel 3.

That's great to know. After playing through TitS on PC, and Cold Steel 1&2, I've been itching to get my hands on all of the lore. I'm into Chapter 5 not on TitS SC and am taking my time. No need to rush it to play 3rd. Cold Steel III won't be coming out any time soon and more than likely I'll get Cold Steel for PC as well. Anything that'll support more Falcom games and possibly get Azure, and Zero released at some point. If not, then I still have some quality games to play and replay. Thanks, as always, for the great info.

If I wanted to play with some TiTs (lol), about how much time will I have to put into them?
This is a rough estimate from memory based on doing all sidequests and what not on a first playthrough. Second playthroughs can shave off a decent amount of time for obvious reasons.

[PSP/PC] Trails in the Sky FC - 45 hours
[PSP/PC] Trails in the Sky SC - 80 hours
[PC]Trails in the Sky the 3rd - 50 hours

[PS3] Trails of Cold Steel - 80 hours
[PS3] Trails of Cold Steel II - 80 hours (Has extra story content unique to NG+ too)

Cold Steel I & II are also coming to PC this year as well. They will have extra voices added courtesy of XSeed. Vita and PSTV can play the PSP versions without an issue, but they will not be as patched with updated/corrected dialogue like the PC version is nor will they have backported features from TitS the 3rd like the PC version does. Each of the sequels also allows you to load your save into the next game. Finally, TitS the 3rd won't be releasing on the PSP at all.

There's technically a duology in between Trails in the Sky and Trails of Cold Steel that hasn't released in English yet. The first of the two games is being fan translated. It's unfortunate because most consider those two games the best series of the three. Those two and Trails in the Sky the 3rd are considered the best games in the series I believe, but TitS the 3rd wouldn't have much to stand on as a standalone title without having TitS FC & SC backing it up honestly.

Shame about the first part considering most people already played the cold steel games so this is too little too late. Nice about them getting rid of the stupid hidden quests and crap. Too bad that won't likely be present in cold steel 3.
Eh, it would've been good going into it, sure. However it's not entirely a lost cause learning all this stuff after playing Cold Steel. It still allows you retrospective on everything and you still see the bigger picture.

I also don't have an issue with the hidden quests, but the window on finding them can be stupidly small sometimes which I'm not really okay with. Some of them feels like if you sneeze and move wrong on the controller, you'll miss out on one or two things.

Well technically it takes 5 days minimum but that is besides the point. I left the dungeon too underleveled for the boss fight, but not sure what I'm supposed to about that. I was pretty much sapped of all sp. took an hour just to get 2 levels on everybody, which was thankfully enough.

Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star (Switch) is up for preorder at Best Buy:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/fate-extella-the-umbral-star-nintendo-switch/5871409.p?skuId=5871409

Is there anything special included in this version of the game, or is it just the standard vanilla version of the game/packaging with no bonuses?  Looks like it includes some DLC.  I'm more interested in learning if a physical bonus will be included (like with games such as Puyo Puyo Tetris or Binding of Isaac+).

Also started stella glow on my 2ds since I needed something to play on the go or when not in the mood.  I'm surprised at how much voice work is in it.

Looks like there is. The PSN Classics that release often aren't put up for listing outside of playstation's blog, which isn't something I check. If I catch them, I put them in but I seem to be about 50/50 with PSN Classics. It looks like you've got the following:

Revenant Saga (KEMCO RPG; Digital Only)

Resident Evil Code: Veronica X (PS2 Classics; Digital Only)

Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland (PS2 Classics; Digital Only)

Also missed the Birthdays the Beginning demo apparently. Wonder why it's not showing up on the PSN demo list that I check every Tuesday. Guess it's not on the US PSN, so maybe it's releasing tomorrow.

How is Rogue Galaxy? Picked it up a month or two ago when it was on sale but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Ah Stella Glow is underrated and pretty awesome. Great graphics and pretty alright story. Only major problem is the first time through the game you free time is super limited. I hated that so much, so you're forced to do repeat run throughs to get the full free time.

No physical bonus so far. I was hoping XSEED would announce a cool collectors editions or something, but it looks like that won't be happening. However, Japan/Asia is getting that edition of the game which contains the fancy Nero Switch case. I was considering importing that one since the game has been reported being multi-language, but I'm still not sure. But yeah, the game will have all 35 DLC outfits and also one new exclusive Nero outfit.

Decent combat but the dungeons are overly large with alot of empty hallways of nothing and the story feels much like ff12's pacing wise. Only with a really awful story. The games also really long They could have easily cut out jeraika and zerards first visits and lost nothing since they aren't related to the story. Even digimon cyber sluts had more people finish it trophy list wise.

Man, the exposition bombs before, during, and after Palace 7 in Persona 5 were so damn exhausting. I don't even remember half of the over explanations thrown at me.

Well, no news sites picked it up yet, but to let you guys know...

Degica is bringing Castle of Shikigami over!

And no, it won't be that shit port of Mobile Light Force 2, lol. Degica will mention more info by next week. (And yes, CoS has had a PC version before (though in JP), this is supposedly getting an actual good official translation.)

I remember picking up the PS2 game and spending many hours of couch co op playing this. Really glad they're gonna bring this over

Are those PS2 classics the ones with the upscaled graphics and trophies added in for PS4? Or are they the emulated ports for PS3?

Beat the second dungeon boss in p5 on merciless mode.
What a trial that was. I can't say I enjoy how underleveled I feel. Took me over 20 tries since winning was pretty much luck based. You're just praying he doesn't target anyone's weakness. It's not instant death if he does that(well unless he targets MC), but it sets you back considerably and you need a a good amount of healing items to make up the ground. I would say I was well stocked, but definitely felt like I could have used more even though I already blew all my cash on them.

This battle made me tempted to cheese levels with the reaper but that would ruin the point of a merciless run.

This just strengthens my belief that Tokyo mirage systems has a much better battle system than persona 5. I fight every enemy and then some to grind some cash in persona 5 in merciless mode and I feel underleveled at the boss battles, while I fight every enemy and but no grinding and I feel game has been perfectly balanced for every boss battle and everything is fair in tms lunatic mode.

From what I've read (somewhat skeptical) is that merciless is basically low-level challenge, and hard is actually harder if you grind on merciless to the same levels.

I think part of the reasoning is the 3x damage making fights generally faster (especially if you abuse miracle punch, etc.)
