Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

It's plainly obvious developers are focusing more on the PS4. We've seen it with Cold Steel 3. I'm OK with it honestly, since I love the PS4 a lot. Seems like developers are experimenting with the Switch as well, so I'm guessing in about a year we'll see quite a few niche announcements there too, instead of just ports. It's a transitional time for sure. The 3DS is on its last legs too. I'm guessing by the end of next year Vita releases will be far and few especially for localizers.
I love my PS Vita, but I wouldn't riot the Sony headquarters in the event they stopped bringing all of their games to it. To be honest, the amount of games I have for the handheld would more than keep me occupied for years in the event I focused solely on beating all of them. I don't even have all of the ones I want for it either. Lest we forget the Limited Run Games releases as well as the PSN downloads. Again, my love for the PS Vita is strong, but I agree with you. The PS4 is their future, and their focus.

Yeah, I agree, as I've gotten more out of my Vita, than I ever thought possible. Especially with Sony's janky treatments from pretty early on.

It's nice to still be able to get so many titles so late in to it's run, especially with all things considered. So as stated above, if it all ends tomorrow, I've got years worth of titles to play and experience, so when the end does finally come, it will for sure be a celebration, and not so much a mourning.

The Vita has for sure earned it's spot among the gaming greats, no question(at least for me).

I have a boatload of games to play and still have both utaware and Mary Skelter (Otaku Overdrive got me to really consider this one since I'm iffy on IFI games haha) to get this year for it...maybe Summon Knight 5....but eh....maybe. God Wars as well I guess since I love my turn based strategy games. Just don't want to go too crazy there haha.

Vita is awesome and superior to the 3DS, though I play games on it too. Just a lot of fun games and unique niche games, which are always good in my eyes.

I don't think Sony is going to make another handheld. They stopped supporting the VITA years ago, why build a new system to ignore when they can keep ignoring this one.
Sony creates things just to ignore them, have you seen the Playstation VR.

It's no different from the PS Move. Big hoopla about how it was going to change the face of interactive gaming, and then nothing. The Move was kind of fun (certainly better than the Wii controllers), but there just wasn't enough games to support it. I'll wait and pick up a PSVR, just like how I got my Move, at 50% off.

I love Sony's consoles but, outside of those, I no longer chance buying their handhelds/peripherals.

Yeah same here, Outside of (if they even call it that) the PS5. I don't see myself buying any other Sony gaming product.
That's an outright lie and you know it. You might not keep it but you would buy it for sure and squeeze a dime out of it if you could turn a profit. :D/

You mean the thing that has had a pretty steady stream of games coming out and just released a pretty good release in Far Point?

VR has gotten a good amount of support honestly. They added 3D bluray to it pretty recently and Im sure there will be stuff announced for it at E3.

cold steel wise it more than likely will get a steam port considering they announced cs1 and 2 a little while ago enhanced ports for steam.

Free PSN junk this week:

Birthdays the Beginning

PS4

Avatar Ornament Set

Don't see anything else thread related. Also that DLC above is the one that went missing which I mentioned last week. Also looks like Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time was priced at $21. Go figure when everything else is $10-15.

Yes! I hope the VN comes over to the west. The Chaos;Head VN was one of my favorites. :)

Speaking of Vita, my main complaint was having so many titles that seemed to be Vita Exclusive end up being ported (sometimes with even more content) to Steam (and some on PS4, but the majority are on Steam). I mean, yeah, it's nice for people that don't have a Vita, but as someone who actually went out and bought Sony's handheld, I expected the games offered to be exclusive to that system unless otherwise stated at launch. But nope, a ton of these games ended up being brought over to Steam. Kinda made me think, what was even the point of getting a Vita? I know this way of thinking is pretty selfish, but it's just the way I've been feeling over the past year or so.

In terms of Playstation VR.....I rarely use mine lol. I used it once last week to play the English version of Summer Lession, played an hour, then put it away. I think it's been a month or so before that when I last used it. Games are neat, but there is just no staying power with it for me. Also setup is annoying.... and I'm lazy :???:

I'm pretty excited about Chaos;Child too. I didn't enjoy the anime very much, but I could see potential if it were in the visual novel format and had more time to pace itself out.

Knowing them, it's probably going to be PQube who will bring it over. They've been teasing for 2 years.

The Genji skin is awesome, especially since I'm a fan of Tokusatsu shows. Not sure why they called it Sentai though since it looks more like something from Kamen Rider rather than Super Sentai.

That art book that came out with Ys VIII in Japan I presume?

So I like the idea but....all these characters has got me nervous that they'll mess up the story with too many characters in the mix. And considering CSII left way too much open I'm wondering how they'll wrap everything up.
And I'm now getting vibes of "Sen no Kiseki III: Osborne Vs. Zemuria."
Eh, who am I fooling? I'll probably play this game and love it to death anyways even if it sucks more than Dark Matter.

Just a reminder guys, there's a PS4 Community for CAG Overwatch players if you want to play together, working towards these lootboxes. Search up "CAG Overwatch Group" or pm me and I'll add you. It's the one with a picture of a very pretty lady Hanzo cosplayer, so it's hard to miss (that might be incentive alone to go look it up.) I'll start using the event feature to make parties at night or during the afternoon.

If you play on PC or XB1, you can use this thread, and I think Draekon handles most of the Battle.net players.

CSIII will be a game I'll get and play day 1 for sure. It'll also be one where I snag the LE/CE in the event one (More than likely) is released. I need to get the lead out and finish SC for I can start 3rd. More than likely I'll be playing Cold Steel I&II on PC as well once its released this summer.

My guess is that CSIII will do a good job about having these in your party as a temp character much like Elise, Toval, Sharon, Claire, etc. Some might not even be playable at this time and perhaps will make way for some DLCs or something. Like I've mentioned before. I hope the buzz around the games make for the release of Azure, and Zero, plus more new games from this series.

Cause, I'm a Trails of fanboy (fanman?...no that sounds odd)

People say PSVR isn't being supported but it's done a good job bringing us waifu material in VR. It's a shame Gravity Rush 2 didn't include some kind of VR photo mode since you can make Kat take those selfies with her camera. Then there's Nier Automata, imagine a VR photo mode with 2Booty.

Going back to Gravity Rush 2 tho something I always thought would've been neat with VR was a first person mode just to do all that gravity flying etc.

Here's all the Overwatch skins/emotes for the three week event that started today. Lots of dance emotes.

Pretty disappointing, but I wasn't expecting anything grand since the Omnic Crisis event just happened (which should've been the Anniversary event to begin with).

Finished Nier Automata last night, great game. Can't recommend it enough. Having to basically beat it a second time to get the rest of the story was a bit of a pain but seeing the true ending made it worth it. Definitely my PS4 GOTY for now.

You have to play it 3x. There's 3 story versions.

And I will be too simply so Xseed has money and sales numbers to show Falcom that there are enough people in the West that want their games. Though simply going back to Kondo-san's addressing the International players personally in that Ys VIII NISA reveal trailer I think is a sign that he already does recognize that fanbase. And Cold Steel I and II on PC that I think is exclusive to the English dub from Xseed. That's also something that I did NOT expect.

There could be one way to balance out all these characters and even settings: Like in Persona 5 where you have to do things in the real world to affect the Metaverse, wouldn't be cool if you were running two dungeons at the same time but different characters would need to do something in one dungeon so the other party can continue forward? It could also add to the complexity of the dungeons that some people liked (or hated) in that last part of CSII. Plus I think it'd be kinda cool if you can fulfill requests in different areas with specific characters.

Not that I expect it from a typical JRPG, it'd also be interesting if you cleared specific objectives in different orders, you can change the outcome of specific events or get different results....I dunno.

But most of all....

...I want them to focus on a compelling and satisfying conclusion to the Erebonia arc. I think we can all agree to that, right? :D

I was hoping the anniversary would be a collection of past events. Maybe give people a chance to get old seasonal outfits.
They will come back once a year around the time they were prior if I remember correctly. Of course the pool for skins may be bigger during that time if they release even more. We'll see what happens in a couple months around the time when they held the Summer Games event last year I guess.

Dat D.Va skin tho. And the dance emotes!

BlackRockWaifu played it 5 times.
I think he means that I had to replay one of the endings since I reloaded a previous save by accident.

But I'm currently going through another playthrough again just to get the platinum. Way more fun now that I know how to get the "True Booty" through self-destructing. Also, having Indignate as my coach makes it more fun too, found out I can ride animals, swing myself, launch enemies, run faster, etc.

Swing yourself?
Press the jump and shoot button at the same time I think. And launcher is jump then quickly press triangle. Thanks to Indignate for that info!

There's lots of little tidbits of knowledge that I wish they included in the tutorial. I still think there's a purpose for the red glow at the end of A2's extended dash.

Edit: Another thing is that you can hold down a pod ability to use the other pods to charge it up. But that's a bit more common knowledge.
