CAG Niche Backloggers Anonymous (Monster Hunter World!) [February]

How did it screw you over just curious is all. I have been very busy and couldn't play much of anything but I know I got about 13 or maybe a bit more loot boxes. 1 Legendary and it wasn't an event one....so I bought one of the legendary skins. Another person I know got 2 boxes with 2 legendaries each from the event. Just wasn't my event for luck, and had no time to play it.

For the beat em up month i'll play some PC indie beat em ups haha. I'll put them as I play them. Also Dragon's Crown has been calling me back for a while....Not too long either. Could try to beat it with all the characters.
They didn't "screw me" screw me, I just got pissed that a ton of things went south and their system didn't help to prevent it.

I almost got to diamond, 2897 to be exact, even beating my previous career high, but I had a lot of wins compared to losses. So the next few games after I reached my peak, I got stuck with people who threw games and lost like 4 straight. Also doesn't help they purposely ranked everyone lower this season, so I had to climb way more than I should have. (From 2200 to almost 2900.)

For loot boxes, I opened almost 50, and only got 1 current event legendary, which was the Reaper one. I got like 7 non event legendaries, and like 3 old event ones, which I didn't even want. I was fine with not getting the older ones I missed since I didn't like them anyway, and they were recolors of what I already had. I didn't even get enough coins to buy a skin I wanted, and I didn't want to either since they'll just end up being 66% off next year.

Finally, the last day of the event, I was grinding mystery heroes, only needed 1 more win to get my 1st weekly lootbox, and 7 more to get all 3. Managed to lose 5 games in a row somehow, then the event ended suddenly with no warning, and I couldn't even get the remaining boxes. Overall, everything was just a mess. Just glad its all over.

I'd love to get back into Dragon's Crown too, if it's the PS3 version. I remember when it 1st came out, everyone in the niche thread was playing coop together, but by the time I got it a year later, no one was playing anymore, not even on the public server. So that one is left unfinished in the backlog. I also picked the warrior class just to run through it, and that class was boring, I should've picked something else.

I remember someone mentioning God Wars earlier and I didn't know about that one. Looked it up and I love that style of games. Is there any other FF: Tactics type games that someone recommends?

Also Dragon's Crown was free for Plus so most of us should have it.

If we're counting musou games I've already been playing Samurai Warriors 4 as my first 'Warriors'/musou game so I'm conveniently participating. It's really good!

That first taste is amazing. After experiencing it 3+ times...it tastes a little stale but is still alright.

Got to day 5 in Senran Kagura Estival Versus. Was getting really boring but seems to have picked up a little bit. Playing it with remote play on my new laptop now.

Nice! I've never played a Samurai Warriors game before, but I did play Dynasty Warriors back on PS2. It's a pretty cool genre. Like Nitrosmob said, they might get stale after a while, but most of the good ones know how to mix up the formula from time to time and add new gameplay mechanics.

So what is everyone playing this month? Beat em up or another genre included.

I'm playing Senran Kagura Estival Versus, and continuing Injustice 2.

Finally finished Gravity Rush 2. Overall, can't say I enjoyed it very much. Too much lackluster story, fetch quests, find person in crowd quests, and terrible stealth quests. All I wanted to do was fly around and kick shit like in the first game.

I liked it mostly. Except for the stealth missions. So awful.

I dance to the beat of my own drum, so Ys VIII & Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth. Which means ARPG & SRPG/VN hybrid for me. Technically I'll be getting dragged into Destiny 2 here and there too. So I'm full up for September.

I'm playing Senran Kagura: Estival Versus.

From a PSN sale a couple months ago I picked up the dlc missions and the Senran Kagura dlc characters. I previously bought Ayane from Dead or Alive. I have some dlc clothes since I bought the dlc characters from a bundle.

I did one of the base game side missions, but I think I'll finish the main story before I do any more of the side missions. I'm in the third day of the main story.

As soon as I got the option I switched from Easy to Normal for the main story missions. It became more challenging. I usually get a C or D grade for beating a mission.

Started Yakuza Kiwami yesterday too. It's a lot of cutscenes. I like the story so far, but the controls are a little janky, like most Japanese games.

Since someone mention musou style games, I think I'm going to go back to Ninety-Nine Nights. I complete the first story angle, then somehow deleted the file. I remember not liking playing as the brother as much as playing the sister, but it's a visual feast that I'll be okay playing in front of the sons.

Started Digimon Cyber Sleuth. So glad I dropped playing FFXV to play it instead. Having more fun in the first 6 hours than the first hour with FFXV.

Got to day 7 in Senran Kagura Estival Versus, game is a lot more interesting now. Way more fun once the characters leveled up.

I've been playing a lot of Yakuza too and also started Akiba's Beat finally. Amazing how much that game has taken from other games. I don't think there's anything original about it. It's interesting enough. Not sure if I'll actually finish it.

Damn, I beat Day 7, but I'm locked out of Day 8 unless I finish the requirements first. Heads up to anyone who neglects destroying the festival platforms.

I finished the main story for Estival Versus. I guess that counts as beating the game. Now I'm going to use Ayane to mop up the destructible collectibles I missed. Then there are all those side missions.

Nice! I bet you're close to the platinum. I haven't bought any of the DLC yet, but I might if it's good. I'm saving for Sonico and Marie Rose in Peach Beach Splash though.

Sort of. All I have to do is beat all the base side missions and do a few more stage finishers, then just buy what completing those things unlock in the store. The thing is there are 27 characters with 5 side missions each. What I have left is simple; there's just a lot of it left. I want to see everyone's side story, so it's not a problem. I'll just have to look up where those final stage finishers are.

Playing through this game has raised my interest in Peach Beach Splash. But one week after it's release it will be October, and PSN usually does a Spend $100 Get $15 promotion that month. Then there is usually a PSN discount code during the Black Friday or Holiday sales. If I pick it up I'll at least wait for those offers.

Is there a way to track what stage finishers you did already and what you need next? Cause it seems like a hassle if I gotta do each one all over again.

Side missions weren't too bad in the original one, but my gripe is that I vastly prefer playing some characters over others. Some are super fun and fast, while others feel so rigid to control. But you gotta use that respective character for those missions.

My favorite characters to play as are Hikage, Homura, Miyabi, Ikaruga, and Yozakura. Basically the sword users or heavy hitters.

My least favorite to play as are Hibari, Mirai, and Karuru. They feel so stiff.

But my favorite waifu of all is Ryona of course.

I'm closing in on the platinum for Musou All-Stars. My only complaint about the game is that they got rid of 'mission select' which makes completing all dramatic battles and obtaining all endings a bit of a chore.  :whistle2:?

Other than that, it has been a neat throwback to the old Musou games with it's simplicity and focus on character interactions in the hub. :)

In the Library section you can see all the stage finishers you unlocked. Or you could check the store to see which stage finishers you did, but haven't unlocked by purchasing yet. Then you have to find a complete list online and compare.

For a story with 25 characters they did a pretty good job of showcasing almost everyone. The only one who I wondered where did she go was Yozakura. And when I got to finally use her again she was a lot of fun. She seems like a character that is meant to go into berserk mode.

Here's a photo I made in the diorama mode. I looked at the in-game gallery of user photos. It's pretty much what I expected when you can manipulate flesh-colored accessories.

Awesome! That game has actually been on my radar for a while, since you can play as Marie Rose. And I almost got it with Best Buy having a $10 GC and GCU, but I never got to it.

So what price would you recommend this at? Like a "buy now at $60 msrp game" or a "wait till 1st price drop at $40" or "wait till cheaper at $20" or a bargain bin $10 game?

Honestly I really want to play it, but I got other games to play so I'm waiting for the $20 mark. But if it's really impressive, I might get it at $40.

Yeah, they did a really good job at getting everyone involved in the story. All the characters had their own side-arcs and stuff. I haven't beaten day 8 yet, but from what I've seen though, it seems Miyabi's and Yumi's squad got a little more attention, mainly since they had a loved one to go see.

Asuka's and Homura's squad seems to have a lesser impact, and mainly part of the joke stories and the gag reels-like arcs. The crimson squad really got the shaft this time around. But it's understandable though, since the last two games focused heavily on them, and Homura's gang basically has their own deep story outside of the other 3.

Yozakura is so awesome! In the last game, they had tips during the loading screens on how to play the characters, and I think this one didn't have that. But in the last game you could hold a button with Yozakura in her combos and they charge up to 6x damage, and they brought it back to this game. A full combo with each hit charged full almost killed a boss in one sequence. She's pretty crazy. And her heavy attack charged full just demolishes mobs.

Rise Kujikawa?

Or I guess Renka Kujikawa.

I would recommend it to others at the $20 range or whenever it hits clearance unless your a die-hard fan. The story is short and not really intriguing so it solely relies on music (glorious remixes) and the character interactions. Plus, multiple playthroughs through the same battles over and over again to get the full story from each side..I can see non-musou fans wanting to stop fairly quickly.

Anyway, I'm going back to finish Yoru no Nai Kuni.

Awesome, congrats!

Also, thanks for the advice. I guess I'll wait till Black Friday where hopefully it will be $20, or at least like $24 with GCU.

Managed to get most of the platforms for Senran Kagura.

I just realized you can use your Ultimate Ninja Arts without waiting till you have 10% health left, a vast improvement over the last game. And you unlock them early on too.

Also, I love how in the side-missions, the dialogue no longer gets interrupted when you use a special move or get stripped.

I wanted to get Warriors All-Stars because of all the Gust characters, but no multiplayer is a killer.

Beat Utawarerumono: The Mask of Truth early this morning. From the last save at the beginning of the final battle to the clear save was roughly three hours, my god. I really enjoyed it and they ended the three game series nicely. However I wish they would've done the war segments a little bit differently to make it feel more like an actual war. I kind of understand it's not a typical one due to in-game circumstance compared to what you see in other games that use war as a focus, but I still wish it would've felt more war-like. Trying to beat that game alongside playing some Destiny 2 with a friend was absolutely brutal. I am never binging like that again.

On to Ys VIII I guess. Will have to do a write-up on Mask of Truth after I take some time to digest it considering how long it was (I had like 95 saves or so based on in-game transition points and battles beginning/ending).

3 games series? Are they all on PS4? I know that there is a new one just released with the pillow bonus, and one came out earlier in the year with the art book bonus. Was the 1st one an earlier game not on PS4? And is the 1st print run for the one released earlier with the art book rare? I haven't seen it in stores in a while, so I don't know if the 1st prints are all done with, and only standard copies remain.

I also keep tons of game saves. For games that have multiple paths, or to go back to if I made a mistake. But the biggest reason is a back up in case the save gets corrupted. It happened once for Persona 3 after I put like 60 hours in and I made sure to have multiple saves since. I still have PTSD from that.

I'm done with like 6 of the side-stories in Senran Kagura. Wow this is a long ass process, it's gonna take forever to get through all 25.

Deadofnight, did you get through all of them yet?

It's not too bad as a Beat'em Up, especially once you unlock higher combo routes for the girls, and the ultimate ninja art. It gets crazier and more fun then. But still feels monotonous after a while like the genre tends to be.

The first game came out in 2002 on PC only, never localized and only fan translated. If I remember correctly it has a lot of sex scenes in it as I remember trying it back then but dropping it because the gameplay wasn't particularly good and I didn't care for the sex scenes. You can skip over them, but the loli one that was early on left a bad taste in my mouth even with skipping it. It's just not my thing as the main character literally gets down with every female party member more or less.

There was an anime that covered it quite well around 2005 or 2006 I believe that can be viewed for the summary of the first game. I'd recommend watching that. Technically though you can play Mask of Deception & Mask of Truth without watching the anime or playing the first game, but I wouldn't recommend it. It adds a lot of lore and value to the story. Plus the ending ties into the first game/anime as well.

Do not watch the recent Utawarerumono anime that was in the last couple of years though. It covers a lot of the slice of life moments in Mask of Deception, however it butchers the story parts by completely changing everything about them. If you watched it and only played Mask of Truth, you'd be confused as hell.

The other thing to note is because it's a visual novel first and foremost, so there's a ton of reading. Within that there are a lot of slice of life like moments that some people may not particularly care for in the amount they have. It does build attachment to the characters and roughly the first half of Mask of Truth is very melancholy.

The translation is alright, but I feel like they used too many flowery words just because they could. Some characters it makes sense on, but I felt they overused it. Hell, I think there were a couple words I wasn't 100% sure of the exact meaning of.

Finally no multiple paths in this game. It's a straight up linear story. I have no idea about physical copies for the first game either. I think I bought the physical standard copies for both.

I think I have 14 left. I started alternating between doing them and missions from the dlc packs.

The dlc missions are all single-fight missions, but before and after the fight they have visual novel scenes with the character models. They're nice to have.

I think two of the dual blooming hearts missions are free. One of them I found really funny since we were just talking about this game's story focusing on the newer characters.

Wow, the game is starting to get really boring. I almost fell asleep playing. The hit detection is terrible, so one vs one fights are such a pain to go through. Especially the boss battles and you don't have a character with a wide super, those matches take way too long. The stun, freeze, and knockdown duration are also too lengthy.

I was thinking, isn't Dead Rising considered a musou game too? And I'm actually hype for Days Gone now too, since that's like a zombie beat em up but with guns.

I got the platinum trophy for Estival Versus. It's my 18th. It was fun, but it gets repetitive. One should probably play the side missions every now and then instead of rushing for the platinum. I stopped doing the dlc missions. I'm saving them for when I don't feel a bit burned out on the game. I got the platinum for Bon Appetit at a more leisurely pace.

I finished the story for Estival Versus and got the plat for it! Like Deadofnight said, it's repetitive and should be taken in small doses. I really like the story, especially the end. I thought the ending was almost perfect, and they picked the best characters to end it, and didn't just rely on the leads. I can also see how this leads into Peach Beach Splash, which looks to be a direct sequel possibly.

After playing through all the side-stories, I absolutely love how Rin plays. She's probably the most fun to use imo. Also sexy as hell too.

The side missions were mostly a hit or miss, some were really entertaining, others were a dud. I thought the Mirai one was really dark for some reason. My favorites are probably Homura's and Minori's.

Any particular ones you liked/disliked Deadofnight?

The regular side missions that I liked were the ones for Shiki, Minori, Ikaruga, Imu, Ryobi, Homura, Yomi, Mirai, Haruka, and Renka.

I like the Crimson's Squad's five broke girls shtick. Though it's kind of weird seeing them as comic relief in Estival Versus and Bon Appetit. I saw the anime series before playing these games, and in it they were bad asses. One of the reasons I'm interested in Shinovi Versus and the Burst remake is to possibly see them before they fell down on their luck.

A problem I had with the side missions' stories largely taking place during battles is when I got to the boss fights I ended up just running around until all the voice lines finished playing. A few times I restarted missions because I cleared them before I got all the story. Some level 2 supers in frenzy mode can instantly defeat the bosses on Medium.

My favorite characters are Ryobi, Imu, Yomi, Shiki, Murakumo, Mirai, Haruka, Homura, and Renka.

I thought about starting God Hand, but my Playstation VR should arrive tomorrow. I'm going to re-play Resident Evil 7.

I've only been playing Overwatch enough to get the weekly loot boxes and the first win of the day bonus. Free for All Deathmatch makes that pretty easy. Today a new map and Mercy's rework went live, but I'm not really itching to play the game. It'd be funny if I was finally weened off Overwatch by a game about boobs.

From your wording I guess you never played Shinovi Versus right? I've only played that one and Estival Versus. I think it was the 1st 3DS game where Homura was the main villian (anti-hero) and she was really badass in that one. In Shinovi Versus, not to go into spoilers, but Yumi had a bigger role, and Homura was actually mentioned very little, and the Crimson Squad story was actually an unlockable campaign. She played a significant role in the true ending though. But they were already broke in Shinovi Versus. It's actually really sad too...

So I've never watched the Senran Kagura anime. Is it a good watch? I remember EdJericho said it only featured Asuka's and Homura's squads, so I guess it's the story of the 1st game right?

Yeah I did the running around while dialogue finishes too thing. Eventually I got so sick of it, I actually just ignored some of the conversations all together. Also doesn't help I don't understand Japanese, so I can't even focus on it while playing. It was actually waaaaaay worse in Shinovi Versus, where the dialogue stops with every super move and clothing strip, and then replayed that line afterwards. It's better in this one, actually a whole bunch of things are, and hopefully they improve it even more the next one.

RE7 scares the living shit outta me, have no idea how someone can even think about using VR with it. Especially the parts with the bugs.

I've already given up on Overwatch lately. But boobs are the solution to anything, so it'll probably cure Overwatch obsession too.

The anime series was okay. I finished watching it, but I only remember a handful of scenes. I might have appreciated it more if I played the game it was based on.

I picked up Shinovi Versus from the flash sale. That was timely.

I'll buy the Rin and Daidoji character bundle the next time a PSN discount code comes around. Buying them let's you use them in Shinovi Versus and Bon Appetit, so even without much of sale they feel like a pretty good deal.

Rin had one of my favorite songs in Bon Appetit. A nice thing about that game is it comes with the downloadable soundtrack to your Vita or PSTV. You can then transfer the drm-free mp3s to your computer.

Anyone got suggestions for next month?

I'll be playing Cyberdimension Neptunia mostly, but that doesn't come out until Oct 10th. I was actually going to suggest a Neptunia series month.

There's also a bunch of new niche games out this month too though, so maybe it could just be a new releases month or something.

Thought we were doing like a Horror theme or VN theme this month. Can't remember what we said exactly last month.
