The reason digital is more expensive is because MS and Sony don't want to compete with box stores. They need them to sell the hardware. The people buying the physical disc are the reason digital cost more. They think they're saving a dollar or two when they're costing gamer billions. They're nothing but underpaid workers for Gamestop and BB. Rant over. Get rid of physical so we can have steam like prices. It's coming whether people like it or not. The faster the more we all save.
Thanks for fighting for me to lose my job!

This may be the stupidest thing I've ever read on this website. Congratulations, take your seat next to Pepsiman.

He's sort of right about the first sentence. Sony and MS need big box stores to stock consoles, but for big box stores, if they stock consoles they also need to stock games. the end result is a lot of real estate, and so there is a sort of unspoken pressure on Sony/MS to not undercut physical, since doing so would mean big box stores wouldn't sell as many games, which in turn means they'd offer less real estate, which in turn means they might not be as apt to stock consoles. It makes sense for Sony/MS to want large console sections full of games in every big box store to make their ecosystem look vibrant, and the only way to ensure that is to not undercut physical the way they could.

It's a complex issue. I have no idea what the rest of his rant was about, though.

I still don't expect digital to take over until internet gets better anyway. Data caps are an issue for a lot of people but for some of us living in rural areas it's more about raw speed. Like man we pay $60 a month for a 5 mbps download speed and that is a recent thing, was 1.5 mbps at that price until about a year ago. 1.5 is borderline unusable for modern games and it was a absolutely brutal for even the PS3/360 era. 5 is tolerable but it's still like an all day down for a 50 gig game, easier to just buy a disc.

Remember when this generation was coming around and the publishers kept pushing it with the promise that it would be cheaper because of how darn expensive it is to make those discs? Really showed us with digital being almost universally higher and not following the steady drop of physical because they realized we're all lazy slobs who will buy stuff in the middle of the night without having to be competitive with themselves.

Yeah made worse by sony's download speed being slower than what your internet even offers.

Some digital games drop quicker than physical titles but its just as ymmv as physical is on what goes on sale and what doesn't. but yeah they certainly have less reason to not have lowered prices even gradually on games they sell at 40-60$

south park stick of truth tales of symphonia ps3 and dungeon travelers 2 were all super cheap digitally at 2$ 4$ and 8$ if I recall correctly.

Joke's on Sony, my internet's only 10 mbps!
ha! What's the average internet download speed anyway?

I just ran a checker and mine is apparently only 38 mbps. Though that was via my laptop. I imagine its faster wired connection wise. Which is interesting since it is supposed to be 100 since that's what the thingy we are paying for is supposed to be.

Where do you people live with these horrible internet plans? Is it the Midwest? I'm guessing it's because there's a lot of competition in NY so therefore I don't deal with this. I hope that it improves for you soon

Boxes also take inventory space so retailers are like to lower prices to push them out to bring in newn inventory. Digital takes up no space.

It takes up HD space - a lot of it. Especially unfortunate for suckers like me, who bought a 500 GB bundle.

I'd rather them come with even smaller hard drives and let us save the money and use them on the externals we are all racking up and using anyway

the size of the games and us being hoarders leads straight to big externals anyway, I don't even keep games on internals anymore as it should make it easier if I ever upgrade or need to replace a system

I'd prefer the replaceable internal so I can put bigger hard drives in if that's what I want to do. That's one of the big disappointment of the Xbox One X as a supposedly premium product.

internals right now are still only reasonable at 2tb? up to 8 for externals so right now I stick with externals at my collecting level

but yeah you should be able to replace for sure, both systems have sure had some silliness over the years. I still want an external option for ps3. Large file sizes have already filled my 1.5tb and I still collect on it occasionally

KY which is technically part of the south. But really that has no bearing on it as much as just lack of competition within each town. We only have like 2 options here iirc so it's easy for them to keep prices high but literally 30 minutes away from me our ISP offers like triple the speed for the exact same price because there are like 10 different providers there.

It's all pretty gross.

Which externals are best for PS4? Looks like there are 4TB seagate and western digital ones for $100.

It's not really gross. Your area costs far, far more per person to network, and there are less people to share that cost. Hence, higher prices. The area 30 minutes away has so many people to share the cost, that there is even room for competitors to enter. So, yeah, sure, part of it is that they need to keep a low price to compete, but you're completely forgetting about cost of entry. You're correct that even once they're profitable in the region they have little reason to improve service or lower costs, but in exchange you get to walk to the end of your driveway to get your mail, and smell cow shit when you open the window, so it's a pretty even exchange.

Not sure but I could swear there were government funded incentives for ISPs to “wire” rural areas. That said I have no idea how much or if it really is enough to bring down prices in said areas.

I'm someone that hasn't had any problem with seagate and use them but many people here talk shit about them (based on their experiences) so take that into consideration

I'm also not a heavy gamer so I don't tend to put my electronics through stress tests in comparison to other gamers which should also be considered

and I use the ones that have a power cord and are not powered by the console

The free Uncharted 10th Anniversary bundle of themes and avatars is live for the next few days:

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP9000-CUSA07737_00-UNCHARTED10BUNDL

Seems to include six dynamic themes and a 10th anniversary avatar plus a bundle of Uncharted 4 avatars.

Don't forget to start up either Uncharted 4 or The Lost Legacy's multiplayer to get the free pack of Uncharted anniversary skins.

there are/were.... but I think once the first company wires an area, the gov't won't pay the second company? Not an expert on all that, though. I know wiring an area can be very expensive, though.

that potentially/ ultimately makes it even more difficult for competition... the first company gets subsidized, so doesn't have a significant cost of entry. How is competition supposed to enter that market now, when they need to shoulder entry costs where the other guy didn't?

One of many reasons government subsidies and interference often backfire / have unintended results [hi, farming industry].

Anyone have a Livelock review?   Descriptions sound like I'd like it, but after watching vid I'm not totally sure.  I'd likely be solo'ing it.

Eh I live in a suburb on the edge of the city away from any farm stuff. Most of the landmass is rural but there is still a city in the center of it all where many people live (myself included.) It's just a small city (in both population and size.) But really I have to disagree about it not being gross, you'd have a point if all I could get was the speed I have now but I can go up to 25 mbps with my current provider, it is just expensive. When we got bumped from 1.5 to 5 last year it had nothing to do with them upgrading infrastructure or anything, it was just the little competition we actually have finally pushed them to raise the low end.

So there is progress being made it's just annoying from a video game perspective.

Conversely I prefer the lack of limit on externals since an internal drive is still going to be capped at 2TB in the proper form factor for a bit.

Anyone bite on The Mummy Demastered yet? Saw some good reviews for it, but would prefer an opinion from someone on here who would've played it. Price is a little high for me, as well - might hold off until $10 or less. Thoughts?
I bought Mummy Demastered a few days ago along with Mystik Belle, and finally tried MD today. It's a fantastic metroidvania game, reminds me of a cross between Turrican and Castlevania. If you ever played Turrican or Super Turrican back in the 90s, it's a lot like those games, with a lot of Castlevania elements included. The graphics are very reminiscent of SNES games from the 90s, with great pixel art, parallax scrolling, and great music as well. It's a bit hard, the bats keep dropping fireballs on me when they fly by, gotta practice to sharpen my old skillz!

Haven't tried Mystik Belle yet, but I like to support Wayforward so I picked it up too.

Where I live in KY, we'll have fiber soon by the first of the year. Might want to check to see if your ISP is going to have that soon.

Picked up River City Melee. It's a fun couch multiplayer brawler. $7 well spent if you have friends. Wish I could get the trophy for playing a match online though...It's dead :(

How different is the ps4 original vs the slim other than the obvious re-designs?

The current trade value on the original ps4 is $130 and all I would need to do is add $60 for the slim model.

One of the more prominent changes I found with the slim is that it has 5 ghz WiFi support. Otherwise I don't think it's that different.

The touch-sensitive power and eject buttons on the original PS4 are horrible, can easily be activated when you don't want to. They redesigned the buttons on the slim, a big improvement.

Where is that $130 deal? GameStop?

I have a fatty and wouldn’t mind getting a slim just for the 5ghz. The Internet on my original is soooooo slow. Get maybe 5 mb/s at best. Have 5 ghz on my Xbox One and it gets 50 mb/s.

I know people do complain about PSN downloads being slower in general though so not sure if it would make a huge difference or not.

use a router, not the built in router with the modem the isp gives you, and you can bridge your network with no nat and that will improve connectivity in games, dunno if bridging is why my speeds doubled on ps4/3 with another router though.

I have a great router. And my Xbox One is right next to my PS4 yet gets downloads up to 10x faster. I think it’s a combination of the 5 ghz band being faster and PSN being slow.

But I am curious if the slim’s 5 ghz would make a difference.

For $70 you can get a new 1TB PS4 Slim at either Game Stop (and get a $50 GC) or $60 Kohls cash at Kohls on Friday (Thursday at GS not sure about Kohls).

New DS4 and double the storage and a 1 year warranty. The Slim uses less power and is quieter.

Man. I may need to do this and trade in my fatty since you get the $50 GC too. Not that I really want to actually go to a GS on BF.

Yeah I hate going anywhere on BF. The deal is through the 26th though so maybe take a chance and go on Saturday or Sunday?

They open at 4pm on Thursday. There is one right down the street from my parents. I might stop in and grab a couple of games if the lines aren't crazy.

Yeah, might just wait and see what’s left over the weekend. It’s not the most pressing need after buying an X1X but it certainly is enticing.
