Sega genesis mini preorders are live

I didn't get to have time to play it a whole lot. I just fired it up to make sure it worked.

I liked what I saw though. The interface was good and I tried ghouls n ghosts and alisha dragon. The ran well. Console itself also felt built well. I'm hoping this does well and if the turbografx 16 comes out and is done just as well I hope this will spur others to create ones of the same quality.

And if anyone is curious on a 6 button controller I got this one and it felt really good. I didnt even try the pack in controllers.

If you do go for an 8 button controller, make sure it says Switch Compatible on the front. Apparently Switch compatibility was a hardware revision. I found some in stock at my local MicroCenter and only one of them had Switch compatibility listed.

Yeah, they did one run without it - stiffed all the early adopters - then immediately added Switch functionality. Ridiculous. It's great and unexpected to have it, but handled incredibly poorly.

I have one launch 8 button controller and one i ordered a month ago i test the old one today.

Update: Well this sucks only the newer one works with the switch. The older one does not.... the markings on the controller are not different at all. I don't have the boxes anymore so I cant comment on that.

This is cool the dpad works in links awaking on the version of the controller that works with the switch... :)

Using a genesis controller to play links awaking feels so wrong yet so right

excuse me if this has been discussed already in this thread, but who played ecco the dolphin back in the day? This is probably the main reason why I would buy this mini. I remember as a child, I seemed to be the only kid in my little bubble that loved this game.

I played it ... and it was great, until it got ridiculously hard ... damn aliens (uh ... spoilers?)

I played it back then on the Sega Channel. I didn't got into it because I didn't know what the hell I was suppose to do as a kid.

I remember it well and also thought it was a great game. At first, I was stuck in the lagoon and thought it was a stupid game and gave up. When I finally picked it up again and started to make some progress, I got hooked. There was only one part I couldn't get through and had to use a good code to get past it.

"I was paranoid about game rentals and kids beating the game over the weekend. So.. I.. uh... made it hard."

Developer quote:)

I think the weirdness appealed to me.......funny because later on in life pink floyd became "my band" which was inspiration for the soundtrack of the game. I also got into float tanks as an adult and found out a few years ago that ECCO came from John C Lilly, the inventor of isolation tanks and dolphin research.

I miss codes:)

Wow 60 bucks already? I assume that is YMMV and only a few locations? Is it not selling that well?
I think it's actually selling pretty well. It's pretty much sold out at all targets and Best buy's in my area. I think Sega would be smart to do a small initial run on this to get a sense of the demand so it's not a fire sale like the PlayStation classic.

I haven't played much of it, but I just bought the 3d version from the eshop sale for the 3ds.

I owned the game and was very excited for its release at the time. The graphics were really good for its era. But I could never get into the gameplay and don’t recall getting very far into the game at all.

I've been playing a lot of Genesis games for the first time this summer. I beat Dynamite Headdy, Mystical Fighter, Ristar, Shining in the Darkness, and Super Hydlide. I started playing Ecco too, but I quit after 4-5 levels out of frustration - I love hard games, but it wasn't the fun kind of hard. Plus, the gameplay wasn't too exciting, like pushing blocks underwater, going back and forth to trigger crystals, etc.  Maybe I'll give it another shot, but I wasn't impressed.

It was one location
Yeah, one location and it was either a mistake or an employee having a bit of fun or a photoshop. It's been out four days, no way they would cut a third of the price that quick and put it on "Clearance". Maybe some kind of promotion or something, but even that is questionable.

doctorwolf seems really, really invested in wanting the price to plummet on these things, even after he said he bought one. Of course he first posted he was waiting in a 100 person line at Target for a midnight release. Then he said he went in the next day after work to buy one (again I guess) and said the employee didn't know what it was and the case is full. Then he got all giddy about a 99 cent "price drop" on Amazon. And now he is acting like this photo is something that is happening.

Dude, doctorwolf stop the trolling. You aren't funny and eventually a moderator is going to get involved.

Sounds like an early adopter with a severe case of buyer's remorse. I cannot think of why else someone (who is apparently stalking me) would get so triggered for merely reporting evidence based speculation.

And "modthreatenning" someone because you don't like their speculation? Really mature.

I had it on Sega CD and could never beat the game. I always got towards the end of the long ass machine gauntlet and wouldn't have enough time to dart through an area IIRC, so I'd die each time. Or I'd just plain derp on the path since it was winding and confusing AF. I should try again now that it has been decades ha.

I already have the Sega Classics collection on the PS3 and Switch so I'm curious if getting the Mini makes sense as well since there is a lot of crossover.  Of course there are quite a few games that the mini has comparatively. For those that have both and have played both do you think it's worth the investment?  I was never  a big sega fan (always had Nintendo) but I do enjoy playing older games so I do have some interest in getting one.

If you buy these consoles, the main reason has to be "i care about the hardware", not "i care about the software"
they're cute stuff and i really like how the genesis uses USB controllers, but im not buying it for the games

Ecco is an "experience", but the experience is best using save states cause it's like you said, not fun hard
That game and Cool Spot were some of my favorite non sports game I played back then. For me, Sega was a NHL and Joe Montana Football game machine. I was pretty deep in the PC gaming scene back them but those two gaming styles I loved. Good times.

Got the two-controller Asian version in today from Play-Asia. Box was beat to hell and dented, but the system itself seems to be fine. No bonus Sega cartridge for me, but I ordered it kind of late in the game so maybe they ran out.

The controllers included with the Asian system are noticeably smaller than the Retro-Bit six-button controller. Kind of disappointing since I have big hands. I will just use the Retro-Bit controller and pick up a second one when they go on sale.

I loved Tecmo Bowl, but when I'd rent a Genesis from a local rental store, Montana Football was a must.  Definitely over Madden.

Montana over Madden??
In the Sega days, absolutely. Madden had really strange player models and they ran all wierd. Plus the playbook was really bad and the game was slooow Montana was excellent. Fast action and a great playbook. Madden only survived due to everyone else dropping out. If 2k went all in on football games back in the Dreamcast days, today's video game football would look totally different.

EA signing an exclusive license with NFL effectively killed any competition Madden had.

THey should have put Joe Montana Sports Talk football on there. They could have licensed with him and dropped the rest. This was certainly a ground breaking title for Sega.

- Sonic 3*
- Sonic & Knuckles*
- Mortal Kombat
- Mortal Kombat II
- Aladdin
- NBA Jam: Tournament Edition
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Hyperstone Heist
- Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker
- WWF Raw

I don’t know what they would have had to do, and I don’t care if they would have had to raise the price another $20-30, but they should have done whatever was necessary to get these on the Mini. It’s a great system, but it feels so wrong without these...

*Plus the lock-on technology

I don't know, I feel pretty fortunate to not have anything to do with Michael Jackson on my system.

Wouldn't have minded the rest of the Streets of Rage and Golden Axe games though, for completeness.

Sega utilized outside composers for the Sonic games and doesn't actually own the copyright so they have to pay to use most of the classic themes. The general accepted fan theory is that due to Michael Jackson and his production staff being involved in Sonic 3 that they want more money than Sega is willing to pay.
