I'll just wait till they air the whole season, subscribe for a month, see the shows I want then cancel. Same thing. Or just figure out another way to get the content.

It's going to be worthwhile down the road, once they get content staggered onto the service. It isn't just the Marvel and Star wars stuff everyone seems to think is the extent of their original programming. There are other shows like that Jeff Goldblum show and some others. But the value really only comes in if you have kids as there is a ton of stuff for them.

I think we are going to wait as well until some more stuff starts to filter in, I've finally started adding and removing services as there are things we want to watch. They of course want you to remain subscribed while you wait a month or two for new stuff but if you follow and add 1 remove 1 model it works out better. It really isn't hard to re-subscribe or cancel whenever you want to watch some new content.

I agree with you and probably going to follow your approach.
 
Mandalorian episode 1 is pretty good, definitely want to see more.  But Disney+ launch is awful, errors all over the place, and stuff half loading.  If paying I'd wait a week or 2 for them to iron out the kinks as it is a mess at the moment.

yeah, they definitely should have done a limited soft launch. app is obviously overloaded with everyone checking it out at once and, like you said, errors all over the place.

Year subs are cheaper in the long run than a monthly sub. But ultimately anyone who wants to keep the service will and those that don't won't. But it seems incredibly tedious to set up just to only use it once. I can't see many people doing that. Why pick up a service just to watch 1 show?

Moving on since they have the hulu espn bundle with disney that is what they are likely looking for to get people in. As THAT obviously offers far more content for everyone vs mostly children stuff. The main negative is that the hulu in the bundle is the ads version. But I assume you can upgrade to commercial as it would be stupid to lock out such a feature.

The yearly discount definitely is to address the short term subscriptions. But honestly most people are too lazy to sub and unsub as needed. Netflix can get by with binging because they add new stuff every week (some good, some bad, but I can at least depend on them to deliver something I want to watch every month). Personally I was thinking about it to watch the Mandalorian, but I've since decided to let them get at least half a season out and let them work out the kinks then re-evaluate. Down the road I will definitely be trying it out.

Maybe this is the anarchist misanthropic nihilist in me, but I hope Apple TV+, Disney+, NBCUniversal+ (Peacock or whatever it's called) all fail and every other streaming service like Netflix, Hulu and Prime gets taken down in the process and the whole world fucking explodes.

I'm torn on this because while they are becoming a monopoly, they technically still have strong competition and are coming in at a lower price than them so I very much see them as being an aggressive competitor. Over the years, I've seen so many issues with being able to get complete collections because shit is just all over the place that having a solid, one stop shop for all my entertainment needs isn't exactly something that's harmful to me. How that affects economic growth is certainly TBD.

That and they're a far cry from the garbage that is Amazon. If anything, Disney is buying up competition to give them job security instead of putting them all out of business.

 
I honestly don’t even care about Disney vis a vis usual monopoly concerns. What worries me is having something like 3/4 of the media that a majority of people are interested in consuming controlled by a single entity. That’s some ridiculous power, and Disney’s already adequately demonstrated that they can and do put pressure on government to change laws that don’t suit them (most notably copyright law). I’m not saying there’s some conspiracy by Disney to exercise that kind of power for evil, but a single corporation having the ability to influence both government decisions and the views of the public at large in tandem seems... I dunno, really freaky.

The Fox acquisition has gone forward, too. Between that, Marvel, and Star Wars, Disney now owns a large majority of successful American film franchises, and two of the four basic TV networks.

EDIT: My mistake, apparently there’s still an independent Fox Corp that manages the Fox TV Network. Disney still reportedly gained a controlling stake in Hulu in the Fox acquisition, though.

I think the “a la carte” stream wars will eventually just become the same people willing to over pay for cable currently ...nothing more nothing less.

OG cord cutters wanted a la carte options (channel specific) at a reasonable price...not a bunch of different services and apps that hike the price up to “not worth it” and too much “management”

We still aren’t ready for “all digital” because of the pricing.

For example, if streaming hd rentals of new movies was the same price as redbox then redbox would become unnecessary and inconvenient for most people.

Currently, I have Amazon prime for my kids kindles, Netflix for my wife, and HBO free with my phone. PSPlus for my online play and and Nintendo Online for my cloud saves. OTA antenna for local channels and htpc/kodi if need be.

That’s already a bunch of yearly “service subscriptions” so the idea of more is overwhelming.

The dream was pay for what you want, but the reality is again paying for bundles.

Sorry for the vent...fine with the implosion if need be lol
 
The streaming video services are monthly subscriptions. I'll subscribe to just one of them each month; hopping around between them depending on which content I want to catch up on. It's not possible for me to watch everything on three or four streaming services in a single month, so why subscribe to all of them? Just Netflix is a smorgasbord for me.

Which makes me think they'll eventually take steps to discourage hoppers. Things like discounted annual subscriptions, or no longer putting entire series of original shows up all at once. Putting original content into a vault for a set time sounds drastic, but I could see Disney doing that with some of their movies.

 
Back to gaming, I gotta say I am really enjoying Death Stranding after not expecting to. Being a delivery man is strangely addicting.

I expected to like it, but damn am I seriously seriously enjoying it. Like wayyyyy more than I expected to. Already about 30 hours in and not even all that far in story wise because I just keep doing all the delivery runs. It's engaging in a way I really hadn't expected

Same here about 20 hours in and iam thourghly enjoying it. Keep thinking about it when not playing and can't wait to get back to playing some more game is addicting in a strange way.

Guess we'll see tomorrow. MS clearly saw value in putting the deluxe in their bundle so it will sell well regardless of reviews. Hope I'm wrong but I think it will miss the mark first time around.

Yea I went back and watched more recent videos about it and the early impressions have gone from mixed to praise. I still have too much shit to finish before buying another game right now, but I will def pick it up down the line.

They have way too much control over culture. Ripe for abuse. They recently gained control of the Fox movies as well. In addition to having too much influence in one place, they can also control which older movies remain on streaming services, and which silently disappear. Given their history of attempting to delete their own history, i'm not okay with them having such a stranglehold on so many culturally critical franchises. Their recent adventures in Star Wars, Marvel, etc also show the dangers of too much concentration of culture.

Part of what makes Death Stranding capable of being so lovely for some is the way that it isn't afraid to alienate others. The game forces its players to fixate on details most games take for granted, and a lot of people find that punitive and/or mundane. I think if you love it, you're really going to love it. Hating it seems to be easy too.

On the subject of Black Friday: I have no idea what to expect. Will PSN offer digital deals comparable to Best Buy or is that a pipe dream? Days Gone for $20 and Dragon Quest Builders 2 for $25 are amazing deals.

It seems like you have to match a slower block animation just right, and those that mashed L1 in Sekiro will have trouble here if they get caught in the wrong animation. You have to be raising your saber to block at just the right time, and if you're lowering it because you let go of L1 then you'll get hit instead. It'll take some adjustment, but it's fun so far. And it looks good too. Playing on Jedi Master to start (second hardest).

Only played the intro of Fallen Order but it looks like it's going to be a hell of a ride. Souls/Sekiro-lite gameplay with the spectacle of Uncharted.

 
Got through the first planet of Jedi: Fallen Order and am about to start the second. Enjoying it a lot so far. I'll stream that tonight at 9 PM ET/6 PM PT.

 
I actually found death stranding to be more interesting to me from watching streams then the early review videos. It's like a Journey(psn game) experience with a complex storyline.

Star wars on the other hand looks like SW unleashed 2 in both gameplay and the graphics to me. Like i see carpet flat grass & stuff. The cutscenes & lighting effects looked nice but still.

I cant believe how tedious outlast 2 is. the first one was pretty fun, thrilling and spooky. this one is just running around testing doors and backtracking and poking around getting lost in a bad way.

 
45 hours into Death Stranding and I'm still getting smacked in the face with major, gratifying surprises in terms of story, aesthetic, and even gameplay. It's such a strong game, I'm surprised the response has been so divisive from critics that finished it.

 
Out of nowhere comment: I hope Marvel Spider-man Game of the Year goes on sale digital for $15 for non plus members so I can sell my physical copy and finish the DLC I currently dont have. Any chance that might happen?
