Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I'm jealous of you guys that got your DERQ 2 LE early. Mine doesn't even have any information beyond processing on the tracking yet, for some reason.

Though I still need to get the platinum / true ending for 1 so I have time.. I just want to see that shiny case in person ^^

As I always note that if you want a niche title for the systems right now and it's new it might be a good idea to buy on release. I already see Death End 2 sold out on Amazon and Best Buy. You will get the sales on the digital versions eventually, but some of the physical copies will not remain. Just a note of course.

I really depends. Some games like Ys 8 drop in price a little before vanishing into the ether. Anything that doesn't suck from nisa is basically a given right now to go out of print. Everyone else is luck.

Ys 8 dropped once, as I got it then around 40 somethingish, but that's just not the norm anymore. It's a risk, but yeah I'm not risking it mainly for the stuff I like such as visual novels and such. I'm sure something like Yakuza Like a Dragon will be around enough to get a drop or few. It's a gamble nonetheless and some come back into print like Langrisser 1/2 for the Switch.

DERQ1's physical version didn't drop much/often, as I recall. It was just pretty suddenly on 'clearance' for $55/$50 at GS for a bit then mostly vanished.

But IFI's shop directly still had and still has copies at regular price, so at least it could still be found without a markup. They had a few sitewide sales for 20% or similar. There was one time you could be the LE for the first game for pretty close to $60

While I generally prefer physical, I want to add that DERQ1 is currently $16 on PSN, for those who just want to play it prior to the sequel.

The PAL version is also available from playasia for less then MSRP.

Actually, since I was looking around anyway; IFFY has it on sale (twenty off) for 40, or the LE for 60.

A good example of a game I just bit the bullet and bought at launch was the switch version of Disaster Report 4.  A game I passed on, waiting for a sale, that I really wanted was La-Mulana 1&2 on Switch (loved La-Mulana on the Vita).  It dropped once, to $50 on BB... and vanished before I could order it.  That one I ended up just buying today.  Thankfully the NISA store still had it, though it's sold out everywhere else.  Still it was nearly $70 with shipping for games I felt like should have been sold in a standard version for maybe $40.  Live and learn but at least I didn't pay much over what Amazon or BB would have sold the game with tax included and I didn't have to resort to the import version (which as pretty much the same or a little higher after shipping).  I would have loved to pay less for a standard version.  For games I'm not sure about, I can wait.  Umahara Kawazi Fresh I waited for the switch version to dip down below $20.  Same for NeoAtlas.  I saved about $20 on Trails of Cold Steel 3 (switch) by waiting.  I wasn't 100% sure I wanted to continue the series... but at $40, I figured it was a decent enough deal to pair with the first two games on vita.

I subscribe to the idea of buying games at launch that I know I want.  Especially anything that is likely not getting reprinted or dropping in price anytime in the near future (like the main line Nintendo stuff... which I'll just go to Walmart for to save that $10).  But I don't buy a ton of games anymore and resist buying physical games that just happen to get cheap.  I need to have some confidence that there is a good chance I'll enjoy the game... and .. most importantly... make the time to actually play it.

Oh yeah for sure, Yakuza isn't really niche anymore relatively speaking of course. And I bet since Like a Dragon is coming out around new console launches (even if it isn't on PS5 launch day) it'll probably get a pretty big print.

It also depends on which platform you are talking about for Ys since it was released on so many. ps3 and vita I can't recall it dropping below 45/35 range for off hand physically. And none of them have gone lower than 30 digital outside specific discounts like vip on gmg or such. Only reason I even own it is because of the buy 1 get 1 50% off sale so I picked up the switch version for $27 along with xenoblade switch.

If something goes below 10 I buy it and throw it in the backlog. Sometimes I get to them like exist archive vita and p4 vita among others and other times I don't. You never know that they might pick up in value eventually and you make more than your money back reselling them later. Or go up in price and when you want them later they aren't as affordable. Plus occasionally you find a good game that you'd otherwise not have played that way. Okage is one I somewhat enjoyed and its writing reminded me of atlus persona series. It's a shame they didn't do a full remake of that since with voice acting and a few qol changes it would easily be a great game.

Something Shenmue related might be announced soon I saw on twitter.

The first the saga games are getting a switch release but it doesn't look like it's going to be physical so im out

The latest Kickstarter update for Lost Ruins adds a free playable demo and discusses the final stretch goal, Boss Mode, which will play similar to Castlevania 3 or the recent Bloodstained CotM games where you will be able to switch between three different playable bosses in-game.

Also officially confirms the game will be available DRM-free on GOG:

Yeah it is always a toss up with physical If! games and how much they will drop. The Nep games and Fairy Fencer F dropped like a rock almost immediately whereas Dragon Star Varnir and DE:RQ1 did not see much of a drop before disappearing from store shelves. That's why I don't even try to wait them out anymore as it inevitably costs me more in time waiting and searching for a deal on them.

Digital on the other hand, they go on pretty deep sales fairly often.

So, Wednesday morning I ordered La-Mulana 1 & 2 (Switch) from the NISA store. I went home today for lunch and the package was already there. Nicely boxed with some large bubble padding to keep the thing from floating around (it was only sold for the NA version as an SE, normally I never buy SE's of anything). Really quite pleased with the transaction. I'd have been happier if there was a cheaper standard edition... but now I can throw my vita version into my sell pile and not feel bad about it.

I'm trying my best not to build too big of a backlog. Often in the past I'd buy so much when it was cheap that eventually I'd feel like I was done with a system before ever getting through all I bought. So I'd end up selling a lot of games I never even played (or played very much of). Yes I'd make some good money but it took a lot of time and effort away from gaming and life. This got worse the older I got and the less time I had to play. So, these days I try to be very picky about what I buy in the first place. A demo goes a long way to helping me to narrow my focus and also find games I would have passed on. Like the demo for Langrisser 1&2 (switch)... I played three sessions with it before it all clicked and I loved it and had to own it. I didn't get a great deal on it when I bought my copy, but I got it while it was still available. NeoAtlas though, that was one I thought looked kind of fun but I wasn't paying the launch price. It went cheap though, and I bought it, and for what I paid I think it was well worth it. So I'm not not against getting games cheap... but only a few odd ball games like that get on my radar.

I know I order the VNs I want to read. I'm talking most recently about Collar x Malice Fan Disk thing, the future AKSYS otome games and the 2 pack of Robotics;Notes. I'm a pretty avid player of these things and the supply of them can be pretty hit and miss. Moon is out for Switch now. If anyone plays it please give some impressions.

I love buying CEs from NISA as they always ship them well protected and they usually get here fast. They are a little expensive but they also have a rewards program that gives a certain percentage back in rewards points (5% maybe?).

Heads up for a targeted promo on amazon.  5$ off an electronics purchase with the code 5OFFELEC  I can't find anything it works on and I followed the fricken link they gave me in the damn email.  Thus far it won't apply to any of the headphones I tried.  Let me know if you find something it works on please and thankyou ^_^

Yeah, I loved NISA, as their shipping practices and customer service were always top shelf. I never had an issue paying their higher shipping, as their packaging was worth it. And in the rare situation were something was damaged or less than great for the "collectors" mind set, they would make it right.

Sadly, I haven't shopped with them in years, as I still have an almost $12 rewards credit need to use, and could never find anything to spend it on. Once their Vita selection started winding down, I've been looking for an NS title I could go with, and still nothing. At least the points don't appear to expire, as I've had them for years and they still show in my account, so hopefully one day I can use them for something. Their rewards program often gave me pretty solid discounts and pretty often to boot, so that was more icing on the NISA cake. LOL

During the last few generations you could wait until niche games hit $5-$10 clearance and pretty much buy anything you want. This generation I'm noticing that more stuff is selling out even around full price and by the time they drop to around $20 you need to buy it ASAP or pay the inflated prices soon after. Publishers seem to be printing less and there's not enough demand to do reprints anymore. Most people are satisfied with digital versions, but of course for us collectors (who are probably old assholes like myself who refuse to change our ways) you can't be too greedy this time around.
Oh yeah. Learned my lesson the hard way with Godzilla PS4. Guess I'm never going to play that game 😭

And people thought I was crazy for buying it at release for $60.
I had heard that used copies of that game are going for insanely high prices. Apparently it's quite collectible now.

Of course, I also heard that the game itself is trash, and not worth playing. While it might be a collectible title for classic Godzilla fans, general gamers would probably never be interested in acquiring it, physically or digitally. My personal policy is to only collect games that have some merit to me. While I do like myself some Godzilla, I'd rather get the classic films than a sub-par game.

I remember seeing it used at gamefly for $17. I thought about it and said "ehh it'll probably go lower". Lol boy was I freaking wrong. Big mistake. Real shame to me too as I genuinely wanted to play it. I know reviews are not super great for it, but damn if it didn't look like Godzilla game entertainment.

No idea what it goes for at brick and mortar shops that have it but eBay puts it ~ $160 right now it seems. I think part of it is just that the game isn't available digitally and the only way to play it is with a disc. But like you said reviews for it aren't great. I'm with you in that while I consider myself a "collector" it's only really for games and genres I'm interested in. Shin Godzilla is since release my favorite Godzilla movie and rewatching it not too long ago really have me the itch to be Godzilla. Went back looking for the game and damn was I upset. I know game prices are up in general now (I guess because of covid) but still. Despite the middling reviews it's still a game id love to play. Here's hoping I find it at a thrift store or garage sale so I can afford it sometime within the next 10-15 years.

Sidenote: if anyone has Godzilla, doesn't want it anymore and would rather sell it to a community member who genuinely wants to play it vs selling it on eBay shoot me a pm lol

Oh wow, I have a copy of that around somewhere (smt4a) and don't think I'm going to play it, maybe even unopened. Guess it's time to let it go.

I've made some crazy sales over the past couple of years to pay for construction. I let my GBC Shantae and Neptunia Re;Birth 1 sealed LE go. As well as English versions of Cotton and Evolution for Neo Geo Pocket Color - all in the range of $500-800 each. Collecting seems to really be taking off these days.

I regret getting rid of my copy... anyways, if it helps, it isn't that great. I mean, it's fun in the fact that it is Godzilla... but it doesn't play well and the levels are really dull. It's also a grindfest.

for some games yeah they go for crazy money. I've never had anything that goes for that kind of dosh. Closest would be path of radiance and I'm unwilling to part with it.

Wow, nice. I have sealed/new copies of SMT4 and SMT4A... both seem to go for pretty good money. Same for a bunch of the other SMT DS/3DS games.
Yeah I was surprised how much they go for as I picked up smt4a at target for 4 bucks back when they had that sale 2 years ago along with the zelda 3ds games and other select titles. I already opened and played my copy of smt4 (though stupidly didn't do so in time to get the 30$ eshop credit that nintendo was offering for it and awakening if you buy both because I play through my backlog slowly.) I also sold a couple of the sealed 10$ psp games from amazon when they clearanced those out around 2017 iirc. Normally I open my games and try to play them right away. But during large sales like those and since these are rpgs it takes a while to get to them.

It's totally fine. You don't have to justify why you (and everyone else) buys sealed games. I have a bunch too. Way too many to admit. I always try to get to them, but now that they have gone up in price, it makes no sense to. So I try to find them digitally or a cart only copy. In their plastic coffins, they stay.

I open games when I play them.  I find that makes the most sense as there are plenty of times I end up changing my mind later on.  Plus for those I do open, it's kind of a nice treat to open something fresh and new and start playing it.  The main exception are games I'm 100% keeping for the switch and I'll open them for the gold coins.

And selling stuff... yeah my fear is getting ripped off.  When I sold before I had a good pattern of transferring money out of paypal to a real account I only used for ebay and cashing checks (the old days)... and as soon as the money hit my bank I'd go withdraw it.

I haven't had too many problems, thankfully, with the high value sales, but I was worried about it.

Usually if I found a big fan of the game series giving me offers I would go with them for a lower price. I only had a couple of problems. Someone opened a case for an item I sold and shipped to Vietnam saying the item wasn't working as expected, but I replied to the PayPal case saying it worked fine when I sent it. PayPal decided they could get a refund, but would have to return the item. They didn't return the item, so they didn't get a refund.

Another time I had someone wipe down an SNES cartridge they bought after they received it and I guess some of the black label peeled away from wiping, or something. They accused me of covering up damage with sharpie or shipping them an item other than the pictured one, because they couldn't see white spots in the original or something. They kept messaging me saying to let them know, they were very disappointed, it takes away from the value, and spamming me. I finally offered them a small refund and said they could do that or I wanted the item back. They accepted the refund, then within five minutes were like "I mean I want to ask for more, but I don't want you to think I'm taking advantage of you because I'm a kind hearted person lol". I just sent them the amount they agreed to as a refund and it was fine after that, thankfully.. But that was the most stressful buyer I've had for sure.

If people keep pushing for more of a refund but still want to keep the item, just tell them you'll give a full refund, but you want the item back and that usually filters out the people that are just trying to make money back in the customer service system. I always shipped the high value stuff insured too, so if they were ever like "oh, must've gotten damaged in shipping" then shipping insurance claim could've been an option - though I'm sure that's a pain in the butt, too. Haven't had to do it, fortunately.

Yeah I usually opened games to redeem whatever dlc, launch stuff if there was any and or do installs.

Yeah to avoid any of that I take numerous incredibly detailed pictures. And in case of any supposed damage after shipping I get the insurance plus added insurance. Though I triple wrap stuff in bubble wrap, put it in bubble mailer inside a box with air packets and such.

Thus far the only 3 issues I had were the first package was damaged during shipping so they got a refund and I got paid via insurance, one that was asking me how much to ship internationally then said that they have a na address when I replied I don't ship internationally and their account clearly says kuwait so I noped out of that. The other bought a game but hasn't paid yet and it's been 2 days. Other than that all my sales have gone without a hitch including the big ones like trails in the sky 1.

Over the years I've dealt in items across the spectrum value wise, and the only fraud I've seen was for some of the cheaper items shipped with no insurance or full tracking(overseas). In those cases, someone would claim they never received the item, and it was their word against mine, but I knew that risk before hand, and was OK with it. But I haven't even had that situation happen in many, many years as almost all my international orders are insured now and fully tracked.

As stated, I always take tons of pics, and for any electronic devices, I make sure to take pics of the boxes SN(if it has it), and I take one of the SN of the unit as well. This way, no one can claim the item I sent is different, as I have the SN proof. I also make sure to insure and have a signature required for items of any decent value. A few years back during the holidays, I sold a guitar to someone in the US, who then claimed they had never ordered the item. I think a kid used his parents card to order it, and once the bill came, the parent claimed they didn't order, which may have been true, but it was delivered and signed for at the address specified through the order, so I was good.

I regularly sell stuff in the $200-300 range, as that's pretty common, with some of the $500+ items maybe 5-10 times a times per year(in a busy year). With the $1000+ items maybe once or twice a year, with no issues there either. The most expensive items are pretty rare, so not likely many would scam those, as that would require more work than most would do. And with some of my more expensive items, I even take pics of the packaging process, as I've heard some places like to claim your packaging was shit(FedEX), and that's why an item arrived broken. As for selling digital game codes or DLC, that was a complete **** show more often than not, so I haven't done those in years.

Agree 100%.

My august pick-ups were mainly figures again, but hey, there was a Trials of Mana at least. ;D

Less than 12 hours left for the Lost Ruins Kickstarter!

I think it's safe to say it will make the final stretch goal.  Looking forward to playing the complete game after playing the demo.

There's some information on Japanese twitter that a new Senran Kagura pachinko machine was approved for sale. It's just a line on a document but if you see some kind of countdown in the near future don't count on it being a game.

I did finish Kandagawa Jet Girls last night. Pretty decent story but it seems like the last school was a plot line that got dropped at the last minute.

I pray we're still getting 7even, but I'm not holding my breath. Since it's in development hell, it'll either never come out, or it will eventually release, but in a severely censored state that completely loses the spirit of the series. Thanks a lot, Sony. :bomb:

Good to know. I have been slowly working my way through this between ReQuest 2 sessions and have enjoyed the goof ball story so far. Plat doesn't look all that hard to get either.

As for 7even, I gave up any hope of seeing that released on a Sony console. Jet Girls is really tame in comparison to the SK series and it would be a shame to see it 7even be done dirty like that.

If anyone's willing to put up with Gamestop's terrible website & shipping, just wanted to note that they did something with their inventory today.  Made a lot of additional preowned stock available out of stores.  Possible mass new-to-preowned conversions.  These have all been long-OOS from past weeks of flash sales.  Anyway I picked up:

:ps4:
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel $12.50
Utawarerumono: ZAN $14
Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception $5
Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth $7.50
Persona 5: Dancing $9

The Alliance Alive HD Remastered $12.50
Touhou Genso Wanderer Reloaded $9
AI: The Somnium Files $10
Steins;Gate Elite $10
:switch:
Sonic Mania Plus $9
Our World is Ended $9
Dusk Diver $9

A lot of these are games I own digitally, or have sealed LE's.  So they're just play copies that were cheap enough to grab.
