Unless it's a game I'm interested in playing NOW, I like to test the accuracy of Humble's "key expires" claims on their giveaways.

I'm redeeming some from up to years ago and 99% work fine.

The only one that threw an error was Surviving Mars... which sucks cause that was one I actually wanted to play.  (I have another copy, but the version they gave away included DLCs)

I just found it interesting.

And, in other news, I'm willing to trade for an Oblivion GOG key from Prime that no one's using! :D/
I mint my extra keys as NFTs on the eth blockchain. Why give them away when you can launder money make speculative alternative asset classes waste exorbitant amounts of energy profit?

I saw an interview with Jim Carrey yesterday about Sanic, and at one point he literally interrupts the interview to say he’s doing NFTs and people should check them out, and I’m like fuck off, Jim Carrey.

I have so many extra keys that I don't need it's not funny...  I've been trying to clear them out.  I was waiting to post until I was completely done, but I'm just going to do it in sections.

Most are trash stuff that's been given away or bundled so many times all of Madjoki's 75,439 steam accounts have them already, so I'm not going to bother obscuring any keys.

Some I might have already used, probably not, but who knows.  Or some might be expired.

Star Wars Rogue Squadron was a pain to get working on steam. I had to download some Glide emulation software to get past the constant HAL errors I was getting. Now I remember why I switched to Console gaming a while back. Old PC games like this always seem to be a pain.

Of course you do; old games don't easily work on modern PC's - especially when hardware changes, OS's change, graphics drivers changes, etc etc.

You're gonna need stuff like say Glide Emulators; DirectX wrappers such as DXVoodoo & DXWnd; OpenGL; mods; or whatever to get old-stuff going on modern hardware & software - if dev's and pub's ain't patched, Remastered, and/or re-released the game.

EDIT - At least we can get ancient stuff going on PC, somehow and some way. How's that backward PS3 emulator/support on PS4 and PS5 going right now? ;)

Now try to get Rogue Squadron to run on a Switch.

If you're trying to play old games why not get them on gog? They're DRM-free and usually work way better. Rogue Squadron is on gog afaik

Usually the ones on steam are the gog releases (although sometimes not as up to date, but being on steam also does not inherently mean drm either, pretty sure most gog->steam releases have no drm either). Out of curiosity I tried the steam version, installed, booted, into first mission and shootin droids fine. Git gud I guess?

If its a gog/steam release you shouldnt need some wrapper hackery, since they've already figured out how to get them working on modern systems. But I wonder if maybe its a driver difference like if the nvidia drivers are handling those older methods better than amd if you happen to have an amd card?

I have an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1660 Super with driver 472.39. I think this is the first game I had an issue with on Steam. I had to start doing internet research on the game. I am not the only one to have encountered this problem. The only way I could get the game to launch was install "nGlide" which emulates a 3dfx graphics card. There were actually a few other things I did to fix the issue, but it started working with the glide software. Probably needed all of the steps. Here are the complete steps I followed: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=670473220

I used to own a PC with a Voodoo 3 graphics card and I probably played Rogue Squadron back in the day on that PC. Probably only played the demo though since I already beat the game on N64.

The only reason I picked it up on Steam was I got a cheap steam code for the game. I prefer Steam over GOG anyways.

Definitely true, in some instances.

Some games might actually on GOG come bundled fixed-up in their released on Steam w/ wrappers; GOG did their own fixes themselves (see Dungeon Siege series & Drakensang: TDE CRPG - they made their own fixes to improve performance in Drakensang and also w/ DS they fixed the widescreen issue out-the-box); developers updated it there for GOG version; mods come equipped w/ the game (see Vampire: Bloodlines, where GOG works out the box, coming w/ Wesp's Patch - Basic version; Steam version needs to be modded yourself to fix it); equipped w/ less or no annoying services and actually might have some 4GB mod fixes applied already (see Fallout 3 and NV); come with the most updated version b/c patching it yourself from version 1.0 w/ numerous expansions & patches needed done in the right order can be a bloody nightmare (see NWN2: Complete); and/or work straight out-the-box w/out tinkering (see Jade Empire on GOG vs. Steam).

I know we all love Steam and all & like having most of our stuff over there - but Steam ain't always the answer or just doesn't have the most updated/fixed version of the game.

You need to go w/ the version that works out-the-box best, especially if you don't like or want to do some tinkering.

Always check PC Gaming Wiki for a certain game - b/c sometimes, notes on there will tell you if certain mods, fixes, and whatnot come right out-the-box in a certain version or what they think is the best version.

And since you are trying to play an old Voodoo-based game which uses Voodoo's Glide API & all - yeah, chances are, you should mod it w/ NGlide wrappers (emulating Glide) and go from there to get it going properly.

Is it difficult to mod a Switch? Because I would imagine the N64 emulator for it is pretty decent. I know N64 emulation on Wii U is decent.
It's more difficult than emulating on PC, but that's moving the goalposts anyway. Being hard to play 30-year-old on games on PC as a pro-console argument is just ridiculous, since there is a tiny fraction of console games from that far back that are playable at all on modern hardware.

Phew! Been a rough month and there were times I thought I'd become the Dung Eater myself, but I finally finished Elden Ring for the third (and fourth) time today and I think I'm done. The last playthrough was a sub 3-hour NG+ run I needed to get all the endings/achievements.

My final verdict? Avoid this game!

Return to Monkey Island announced for 2022:

Looks like Ron Gilbert's back to work on this one and Dominic Armato is gonna be back as Guybrush. Can't wait to see more!
Awesome news. Earl Boen, the voice of LeChuck, is currently 80 and basically retired from acting/voice-acting but I hope if LeChuck is in the game they can convince Earl to reprise the role.

Or rather, did, past tense, as it seems the game is mostly done and was worked on over the last couple of years.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again … 7 Days to Die … on sale for $7.49 on Steam … one of the best games you can play on PC for that price.

I've owned it for a while from some bundle but never really played because it's still in Early Access and I get the idea it's more multiplayer/online oriented. Meh.

Nope, it can be, but I’ve played exclusively solo and put in hours upon hours. If you haven’t played it can seem multiplayer oriented because you have to create a server/map, but you can lock it from other players and adjust the difficulty accordingly. It’s kind of similar to Ark in that regard.

But if you like games like Ark, Minecraft, or things where you gather resources and build things, then 7 Days to Die is one of the best. It has elaborate character skill branches that eventually allow you to gather resources and build faster, create motorcycles/cars/a mini helicopter, and specialize in all kinds of weapons (melee-based, sniper rifles, handguns, rocket launchers) and the Points of Interest are great if you like to explore solo … there are old west towns, secret research labs, military bases, and skyscrapers just to name a few.

It’s a really cool game as a solo player … and the multiplayer stuff could be really awesome too but I’ve never gotten around to it.

The thing that got me to stop playing 7DtD was the blood moon or whatever it was called... I was playing on default settings and blood moon happened and super zombies trashed everything I was working towards.

Technically that’s sort of the 7 days premise in 7 Days to Die, you have to be ready for an attack every 7 days, each attack getting progressively worse. With that said, I think you can turn it off or make it easier (lots of customization in the server settings) but you can also avoid the hordes fairly easily by getting up to a second or third floor and destroying the stairs, etc. If you’re building a base, I would recommend leaving on the 6th day and then hiding from the horde elsewhere. They always attack where you are and won’t damage a base that isn’t ready for the attack.

I've got almost 3000 hours in 7DTD. The only games I've ever put more time into are the MMOs WoW and EQ.

Brigandine The Legend of Runersia is coming to Steam. Haven't played it, but it was stuck on Switch and PS4 so nice to see it finally leaving consoles.

I just started playing with the A20 update that released back in December. At 500 hours in, I've got a pretty even split between SP and MP. Like any of MP game, playing with your peeps is going to be tons more fun. But the game is designed such that SP is 100% viable and still fun. The devs have tons and tons of settings to tweak to make the game as easy or difficult as you want, and they dont require starting a new game. So if you get a few days in and find it too easy, you can dynamically adjust things. The modding community is pretty robust, and there is a good selection of QoL, graphical enhancement, content additions, and overhaul style mods.

The thing that got me to stop playing 7DtD was the blood moon or whatever it was called... I was playing on default settings and blood moon happened and super zombies trashed everything I was working towards.
You can completely disable Blood Moons, make them weaker, make them happen less frequently, whatever you want. That first Blood Moon is definitely a challenge for new players. You still don't understand the meta, and suddenly its a seemingly never ending swarm attacks. Most people do the Blood Moon defense in a dedicated base, separate from their camping/crafting base, or just pick a defensible POI to do it in. It is perfectly viable to have your Blood Moon base and camping base be the same, but it requires a bit more work to setup and more advanced knowledge of the game. As mentioned above, all the settings are dynamic, so you can start a game with BM turned off, play for 10 days in game, then turn them on, do the Blood Moon, turn them off again, and just chill til you decide you want to do one again.

Unrelated to pizza, but for any children of the 90s here, Batman: The Animated Series Blu-Ray collection—including the later New Batman Adventures episodes, Mask of the Phantasm, and Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero (though not Mystery of the Batwoman for some reason) is on sale on Amazon for $30, which I believe is a historical low. It’s supposed to come with a digital code, as well, though since the collection released in 2018 there’s a good chance it’s expired by now.
