another reminder that 256gb of space is almost nothing in these days.

A lot of the first party games are pretty dang small. Donkey Kong Bananza is 10GB. Mario Kart World, so far, is the biggest first party game at just under 24GB. As long as you don't leave every game you buy installed, there's enough room to have about 20 decent games installed at the same time. Less so if one of them is Cyberpunk 2077.

That said, I plan to get at least a 256GB card... though I probably could easily make due with less and, again, just not keep everything installed.

I just gotta wonder why Sandisk and Samsung waited so long and don't even have anything bigger than 256gb micro sd express cards ready

Lexar knew this was coming, as we saw from their leaked advertisement before the Switch 2's official announcement, so they had cards up to 1tb in size ready (though apparently not very many). GameStop apparently also knew it was gonna be a thing, because they have their own generic micro sd express cards up to 1tb. So why not Sandisk or Samsung?

Would you all give up physical carts if Nintendo allowed resale of your digital games?

I'm thinking that's one step farther than their lending program they've offered. I can see people "renting" their games to people through account sharing style stuff again like the old days on other systems.

I know Nintendo had some local networking requirements, but I imagine those will get bypassed in some time.

I don't think I'd trust Nintendo enough to go full digital, but with enough effort, I could be convinced at this point. Seems like it's a losing battle, what with the key carts and stuff, and that's probably part of Nintendo's design TBH.
Nah, I don't find digital all that convenient, honestly.
I don't need access to more than one game at a time and if I want to play something else, Picross is my go to palette cleanser. Not to mention, with how big my Switch collection is, I'd have to divide it across multiple SD cards and it'd be a massive hassle to organize vs simply moving boxes on a shelf.
I like playing various genres and looking for obscure games, so with digital I think I'd wind up sacrificing the bigger, more mainstream games or less important Nintendo franchises and stick to small indies and a handful of must-haves like Super Mario, Grezzo Zelda, SaGa, Dragon Quest, and anything from known developers like Suda, Swery, Kamiya, ect. to stay under whatever limit on the one SD card I'd buy.
Personally I'd rather avoid that if I could, but on the bright-side there'll be enough games under [̲̅$̲̅(̲̅5̲̅)̲̅$̲̅] to keep me busy.
To actually answer your question; I don't ever sell games unless I decide that I won't ever start/finish them. I guess I would benefit if it kept prices lower but I wouldn't give up physical ownership for it.

I do feel we are coming down to one of the last generations with physical product sadly. Systems are becoming so much like PCs nowadays and it's very obvious digital rules the PC realm. Digital space doesn't go as far nowadays for sure and I feel more than ever on the PS5/Switch/whatever that no matter the size it gets full easier and easier. I will get a Switch 2 someday, but I'm not super excited for all these virtual game cards and such. Sony is watching and seeing how all this works of course.

Well the new system update with virtual cards messed up game sharing on 2 consoles with the same account. Before the update I had my account set as primary on my sister's switch so she could download my games and play them on her account. My switch has my account but it would do an online check before it would load any digital game. We could play something like Portal 2 Co-op together online with her on her account and me on mine with no issues. The new system even with the online check thing selected in the user settings whoever is the primary console will default to that. For example I just tried to load Portal 2 on both systems and my sister's who is set as primary loaded fine but it wouldn't let me load the game saying someone else was playing it. I could be missing something in a setting but from other people I see the same issues happening to them. Very disappointed I had a feeling Nintendo would stop this loophole with the new virtual cards. Playing different games still works it's just playing the same game at the same time that's now nerfed. Also when setting everything up you will need both systems with your account physically next to each other to set up the virtual card system. If you gameshare with someone not immediately near you you'll need to meet up in person with your switches to set it up.

System Settings -> User Settings -> Online License Settings -> Use Online License (How to enable the online check system like it was before)

Oh crap this is really bad news. There are plenty of games that I game share with a friend that I haven't played yet. Nintendo doesn't Auto download the update though right? You have to accept it? I haven't turned on my switch yet today.

Yeah… this is frustrating. I like the idea of having all digital titles in one spot for the lost part. Unfortunately, I have my kids Switch Lite as primary so they can use my games from the eShop and we could play together on occasion. Seems like an unnecessary step for digital and not the family friendly Nintendo of the past. Wtf Nintendo? Way to over complicate things. Hoping I’m also missing something.

As long as you're not playing the same game at the same time you should be ok. You will probably have to update eventually as I'm pretty sure to use certain online things the system will prompt you to update. Just make sure to turn on the online check setting for the account you use to gameshare on System Settings -> User Settings -> Online License Settings -> Use Online License

Yeah… this is frustrating. I have my kids Switch Lite as primary so they can use my games from the eShop. Apparently I now have to “eject” the game I bought on that console to play it on my OLED. Seems like an unnecessary step for digital and not the family friendly Nintendo of the past. Wtf Nintendo? Way to over complicate things. Hoping I’m also missing something.

Turn on the online check setting for your account System Settings -> User Settings -> Online License Settings -> Use Online License and you will have to do the online check on your OLED like you used to for virtual cards not loaded onto your system. Your kids switch should have virtual cards loaded onto their system. As long as you're not playing the same game at the same time it should work like before.

Not too surprising they closed the loophole for sharing and playing the same game at the same time. The free ride is over. But, if it's just a couple games you like to play together... wait for a sale and buy them a copy. Portal Companion collection has been as low as $4.99 and goes on sale regularly. It's the heavy hitters like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, and so on where it gets cost becomes an issue.

I've been reading through all the nintendo support docs on the update... they covered a lot of stuff. The game lending within a family requires the systems be physically near each other when lending each game. So that adds a wrinkle. But if it's just two people, you make the other persons system your second and they make yours their second, then at least you can insert/eject games back to the vgc library so you can more easily share a pool of games. Or you stick with the current system with online checks to see if the game can be played.

It’s just Nintendo assuming you only have one kid (like in Japan, had a hell of a time getting a room for 4 people, 3 people is much easier there).
We shared between 3 systems here so it will suck for digital. We don’t have much digital luckily, but do have some DLC.

If you all live in the same household, then it's at least easier for that. And sharing dlc is easier now at least with the gamecard stuff.

My daughter was so happy to be able to use our games on her switch lite without internet now. I have my OLED as my home console so the only game she was able to use without was Mario Kart because of my brothers account. This morning we updated both and just put the games she wanted on the lite as virtual cards and tested with the wifi off and now she has access regardless of connection.

For me it's not a big issue but parents and couples sharing games with each other to play together will be rough. Not everyone has money to double dip on copies of games and this helped ease that burden. it was even on their FAQ on how to do it which is now gone after the update. Nintendo should have left it as is for Switch 1 and moved to the new system for Switch 2. That's the problem I have with them they're not giving us options. They're also trying to push DK's new look and removed his old look in the avatars. Why not have both old and new looks? If I'm going to side with someone it's not the huge corporation who makes billions instead of the users who just got shafted on something that's been a thing for a very long time. PS5 and Xbox can gameshare and it's been a thing on there since the PS3/360 days.

Thanks for posting that. It seems like this will be really ideal for a lot of families.
It's nice that you only ever have to install the game once on each system and the swapping of the virtual game card after that is really quick. It took me some digging to find a video to demostrate it, but that was my main concern. Not having to do the online check outside of when you are putting the vgc in the first time, is a pretty big deal.

Have you confirmed this or has this been confirmed elsewhere? Did you also gameshare with a friend that lived in a different place than you? The way I had it set up, I had him as my primary and mine as secondary and I was able to play all his digital games and vice versa by going to his saved profile on my Switch and then going to the eshop and redownloaded whatever game he bought. Then I could play that game on my profile. Is that handled in the same way? If I update, do we both need to change the settings like you posted? What if he doesn't update but I do?

You need to set up virtual cards and that requires you to be physically be in front of each other to link your systems together. Whoever is primary for the account will have the virtual cards loaded for them and secondary will not so you will need to turn on the license setting thing I posted. It will function like before with a license check before starting games on the secondary system. You just can't play the same game at the same time anymore even if you play under a different user. The update stuff I don't know but eventually you will have to update. Turning on the online license thing in user setting should turn it on for the account no matter what system it's on.

What if I can't be in the same room to link systems together? My friend lives in a different state now.

Just watched the video someone posted here
and it seems like turning the online license check to On does make it function like before. From that video he hasn't set up virtual cards and even tells you how to download games without setting up virtual cards since you can't redownload from the eShop anymore. You redownload from the virtual cards menu. It should work like before besides not being able to play the same game at the same time. Hopefully this works for you and your friend and you don't need to meet up in person with your switches.

It looks like a work around has already been discovered. With a few extra tweaks in the settings.

Yeah but the other system has to be in airplane mode. The days of playing Splatoon with my kid are over.

Crazy that we lost split screen couch co-op (or the even better multi screen coop on WiiU), and so many families just bought multiple devices for multiplayer. Now we have to buy multiple copies of the same game to play the game together on multiple consoles... on that same couch. At least I don't have to buy a second couch ...yet.

Nothing good will ever come from digital games. Can't believe we're going to lose physical games within a few years all because people are too lazy to swap out a game for 2 seconds.
An obscene amount of games wouldn't have been made/seen the light of day if it weren't for digital storefronts that significantly reduced the barriers to entry into the industry, and these games can thrive by becoming overnight sensations where consumers can quickly purchase these titles through digital storefronts instead of needing to go to a store and hope that they carry the game or order online and wait for days or weeks for the game to arrive.

I'll probably never be on board for this Digital Key-Card Crap.. but many others will and Nintendo is forcing physical gamer people to head down a river with no paddle.

Maybe charge physical game collector's a little more for the option ?? I'd pay up to have my game Complete on Cartridge and I'm sure others would as well.. right ?

Isn't that what the weird little novelty publishers were already doing?

In theory, nothing is stopping anyone from doing a "full release", and these carts are replacing all the stupid "10% of the game is on the card, download the rest" we had on the Switch. I mean, I feel like it's hard to blame Nintendo when Nintendo is releasing games that are actually on the card...

Oh? I've saved hundreds on games because of digital and console sharing. Buy for one, play for two.

Even Nintendo begrudgingly added that feature to Switch now.

For myself, I find it easier to just focus on playing on a single system. I did the switch lite thing for a while as a second system but I'm to the point where I don't want to play handheld games anymore. My eyes are getting too old for small screen details like text without wearing readers. At least Nintendo made it easier with that option for double-press-home to magnify... but... it's not something I want to constantly rely on.

I upgraded my Switch to the OLED model due to the regular one giving me eye strain/double vision. It helps, but I play mostly puzzle games in handheld. I could never do switch lite's 5.5" screen, no way!
I play solely on a lite and have had no issues reading text. I like it more than the regular switch since it's lighter and has a Dpad. I do wear glasses for everyday use though.

I got to play some more Eternal Radiance, but still not too much because I've had a lot going on lately.

The game is a combo visual novel & action RPG, and leans pretty hard into the former. There's a lot to read, occasionally to the point where you may just want to get the text out of the way to carry on with your business. Thankfully the writing is pretty well done and the characters fun and interesting, which helps the overall feel so the game often kind of skirts the line between interesting and tedious.

Outside of gameplay, everything is done in menus, from chatting with NPC's to shopping to navigating different locations. There are a lot of side quests that offer different solutions (although the end result may be the same). In one quest an old woman was worried about her granddaughter who wouldn't return home from the shopping district, because she was enamored with ocean faring life and demanded to hear some stories from local fishermen. You could A) ask one rather dull character to chat her up, in which case she becomes incredibly bored by his lack of skills or interesting stories, or B) ask a crotchety old man, who regales the girl with such wild and scary stories that she becomes terrified of the sea. In either case she becomes rather disillusioned and returns home safely.

As far as gameplay, the game is passable, but nothing special. The main melee attacks are comprised of a weak and a strong attack, which can be combo-ed in different ways, and you can dodge to cancel out of attacks at any time, which comes in handy pretty often. You can either block enemy attacks, or dodge with perfect timing to earn a temporary rush attack toward an enemy of your choice. I was being fairly cautious in the first dungeon but the enemies there were pretty easy - but when I got to the second I saw a noticeable spike in difficulty; I died twice against regular mobs. There is also a bit of jank; you can often move the camera through walls and floors, and occasionally either you or enemies can even begin to sink into a ground for a moment.

Overall though, I'd say the game is worth it if you wait for a sale, although it's not really going to win any awards. The combat is fun when you get into the flow, the game mechanics are fairly robust, and the story and characters are pleasant. For the most part I agree with the sentiments in this review:

I'm actually a little inspired by all the pushback and media recognition these Game Key Carts are receiving. With all this negative attention I am hopeful that publishers will make better attempts to get the full game on carts going forward. Meaning that the Nintendo disclaimer label plastered over the front should also be a good thing, as a deterrent to pubs. This topic seems to be getting a lot of attention.

I think it's all going to come down to sales. If it's just a vocal minority and sales are still good then publishers aren't going to pay more to get the entire game on cart. Hopefully they don't sell well though. I was going to get bravely default at launch, but once I found out it was a key cart I'm passing.

Sales, but according to Digital Foundry, it might also be that only two sizes of carts are available to publishers: the small game key card size (I don't know what this size is. Has Nintendo said?) and 64gb. Unlike the first Switch that had incremental amounts up to 64gb.

So if you have a 3-4 to 10gb game, financially it doesn't make sense to put it on a 64gb.

I hope Key-Card Crap fails as well.. like a distant memory one day would be nice.. maybe they'll be done with sooner rather than later if people steer clear of em.. Finger's Crossed

With Microsoft increasing prices out of nowhere, it has made me rethink not getting a switch 2 day one. I think it's overpriced and hopefully closer to launch we will find out an estimate of how much it costs Nintendo to manufacture a switch too but I'm also a little worried prices will just go up as the console goes on. Do you think this is just a really weird time and that Microsoft will change the price back or do you think the high price of consoles are here to stay for the next couple of years?

The other message board I post on is pretty pro Nintendo and a lot of posters stick up for the price of the console so I can't really ask there before other people interject with how great a value it is and how Nintendo is just the greatest and everything they do is correct and all that of the prices for everything is perfect because Nintendo is God etc etc. Are any of you questioning not getting a switch to for a while after what Microsoft did?

I still maintain it's overpriced and that the console will have to come down in price either during the holidays or at the beginning of 2026 and so I was just going to wait but now I'm not really sure what the heck is going on and I don't want to end up paying more for it by waiting which sounds crazy but that is what is starting to happen.

I'm not mad at the $450 price but I was hoping for $400. Now with the tariff situation we're in right now and the uncertainty of everything I don't think anyone can say what will actually happen in the upcoming months. They're raising prices because of the tariffs, but if they lower them will the prices go back down? I would hope so, but who really knows. Covid made things go up and they never really got lower when things got better. If you have the money for a Switch 2 and have games you want to play on it that are exclusive I would say try to get one in case the price goes up. For me personally I'm hoping for a lite version since I only play it handheld. Also the games (which I still think are overpriced at $80) I will wait to see if deals can be had on them like how woot sells switch games for cheaper. Memory cards are another issue I would hope they get cheaper with time. Games are going to be even bigger on Switch 2 so that 256GB storage will be an issue unless you just use it to only play small indie and first party games.

the only reason i preordered it is because i think it will go up before the holidays. with an early june release there is just enough time for it to release at this price, sell through the preorder allotment, and then nintendo announces a price increase before the next wave of imports come in.

That's what I've asked about with a lot of things. When tariffs get back to normal, do companies lower the prices? If people are still buying at the tariff prices, what's the incentive to lower the price? Especially since these companies seem to be getting more greedy every single day.

See that makes sense. I was really thinking before Microsoft pulled what they did, that the system would only sell to the hardcore at first and then just sit there on shelves like 3DS and Nintendo would be forced to lower the price but I'm just not so sure anymore. Microsoft was selling the Series X for 350 bucks a couple different times over the years but with Nintendo never officially dropping the price of switch (they just bundled Mario Kart 8 deluxe in it for the same price) will it be any different with switch 2?
I'm really thinking I'll just wait until digital foundry or some other website tears the switch 2 apart and can estimate how much it costs Nintendo. I still maintain they are making probably $80 profit on each switch 2 at the $449 price point. The switch estimate was like $253-$263 at launch so Nintendo was making a pretty good profit right out of the gate.

Wait for it…$499 BUT includes Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour for free!

I got to play some more Eternal Radiance,

I really appreciate all of that. I kind of want to dip my toe into the visual novel genre where there is something more to do that click through text. I enjoy some action rpg fights and this one looks kind of decent for that sale price. It's kind of a bonus that DekuDeals shows this as 9.5h to beat, 12h to do the extra stuff and 16 for a completionist. Kind of a bite sized experience which I think helps if there's any slight jank in the battle system.
