When I first tried online matches, I often got dropped right after one race. But the last time I played 2 races--and won them both, netting ~300 points--they ran perfectly. So I think they've got the kinks worked out.

If you're referring to the online tournaments sponsored by Nintendo, those don't require Friend Codes at all. If you're referring to CAG's Unofficial "Mario Kart Mondays", I think the only one you need is that of the one hosting the room...
