07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. good lookin out! anyone ever do penny guides for instore pickup? my store used to have all the guides out, but it seems they keep a lot in the back now as a bunch of those penny guides i thought they didnt have, show up as available on the site.

I wouldn't bother until you have a chance to go see for yourself. I would guess they'd be more likely to go pull them if they see an order for a penny.

We'll see what they do when the order comes in. Last time I did an in-store pick-up order (which has to be months ago), they did it without any issue.

I couldn't get Gun, M&P: PiT or DQ8, so would be happy to trade the ones I should be getting (PDZ, Outfit, FFIV and MGA2) for any of those. Damn BB website said I could do in-store pickup for DQ8 and the order kept getting stuck on that point. I had to remove it from my cart to let it go through.

For the DQ8 guide hunters, GS & EB have $5 off guides this week, so I think it knocks it down to $9.99, $11.99, $12.99 or $14.99 (if it was originally $14.99, $16.99, $17.99 or $19.99), so it might be worth checking into, since we know how long it takes EB & GS to drop RPG guides.

Definitely let me know... I think I'll go over to one at lunch time, but if you get the in-store pick up to go, I'll do that for a farther store so I can hopefully secure a couple copies.

I guess in reality it doesn't matter too much. You already bought it online, so they don't have any need to see how much the guides actually are when they collect them for your order.

If they make it available for a web-order at a penny price, and the store shows it as being available for in-store pickup, then the order should go through without issue.

They can blame BB.com for putting them up for a penny, which they haven't done in six months or more.

I'm hoping that the same store will have the other guides on-the-shelf in quantities less than 3 (which shows them as unavailble from in-store pickup) and I can pick 'em up in person. I'm pretty sure that the BB store I ordered from had one Gun guide, and maybe a DQ8 guide or two. I can also hit up another one on the way home, maybe 2.
 
I just ordered a few for in-store pickup - we'll see what happens. It's definitely an arguable point if they don't let us get them.
 
I got copies of them all. DQ8 and Mario and Luigi I was only able to get 1 copy. I'm looking to trade for other rpg guides i don't have. Really want a Silent hill 3 or ..hack//Quarantine guide but i'll check lists.
 
Of course most of the ones I want for pick-up are at nearby store as opposed to the further store. I'll give it a shot as I planned, and set up pick up for both stores if I have no luck.
 
I put in an order at a store that normally pulls them, so we'll see what happens with that. Maybe I'll be able to get them since an order was put through. I'll check the BB that normally waits a couple days before pulling them today at lunch though. If there's nothing in store, then maybe I'll try the online order to see if I can get them to pull backstock or something.
 
Oh fyi I love my best buy. Employee's there were helping me find a couple of the guides i wanted. Even checked the back for me to see if they had more. Because of that I went ahead and gave em 1 of the 2 copies of DQ8 they had left. Figuire kindness will pay off in the long run.
 
I've recieved an email back (three of them, in fact) that says all of the guides I ordered should be ready for pickup. We'll see if that's the case or not.
 
Sort of lucked out here -- they'd pulled all the guides from the console section... but not from the PC section. Luckily, the 1 copy of DQ VIII they had was in the PC section!

They have TONS of Socom3. I saw one DQ8 left, around 3 Gun, 3 GTA, 2 FF4, 4 MGA2, 3 PDZ, 3 Outfit. Those are estimates. I really want Mario and Luigi but they dont have it.

Don't forget that a store will show as "Unavailable" if they have 0-2 copies left. They may have some, they may not. You can only add them to a cart for in-store pickup if there are 3 or more copies on-hand.

Good luck in trying to find what you're looking for.
 
Still no response email from BB from my order - they prob pulled them and the stock person can't find them, even though they prob show a bunch in stock.
 
Boo... I'm guessing the pulled Gun and some others since he went back to doublecheck that they weren't on the shelf when I asked about it. Did find a stack of Metal Gear Acid 2 - only bought one for trade.

If anyone has Gun and wants MGA2, let me know in case I am just as unlucky at another store.
 
Found everything on the list at my 3rd and final BB I was willing to try. First 2 had nothing at all and probably pulled them as they have in the past. I tell ya, it gets harder and harder to get these sometimes.
 
If anybody is looking for outfit guide I have a couple of extras to trade. Anybody that did an instore pickup I'd double check your receipt. I ordered three guides to pick up in store. When I got there and they rang it out the guides were listed as .01 cent but my total was $118.00. It was really bizarre the date on the receipt was Sept 2004 and the address of the best buy was someplace in Ohio im in Texas. Probably a computer glitch.
 
Thats why i love my best buy. They don't pull any of the penny guides. They actually put on $.01 tags and put em out on display for people to take.

Then again my Gamestop and EB now suck with penny guides so I guess it balances out.
 
best buy at almaden in san jose had every single guide. i picked one copy of each guide and the guy rung each of em. paid my 10 cents but then some other best buy guy said they couldn't sell them to me. told them i understood and asked if i could at least have 1 guide. the guy said i could have two, so picked up GTA and DQ8.


dammit...at least i was able to pick up what i wanted (DQ8)

I got DQ8 on in store pickup and also ordered Perfect Dark but they cancelled that because they said there were none in the store. Picked up DQ8 with no problem so I went back to look at the guides and to my surprise none of them were pulled. They also had about 3 copies of Perfect Dark which I thought was weird since they said they were out of it. I picked up socom, dq8, and liberty city stories I also bought a ds game so it would look like I paid more. The guy I had at the counter was an old guy who seriouslly knew nothing he kept scanning the wrong barcode on socom so it wouldnt ring up I had to show him how to scan it. He kept saying why are these a penny I just said theres a special promotion and all that.
 
Luckily I found every guide I wanted at the first BB. However, as I was checking out the cashier, who recognizes me now, asks if there are any more GTA: LS. There weren't, but he has been cool to me so I let him have it. So if anyone has an extra GTA: LS please let me know if you are willing to trade.

I also have DQ VIII and ML: PiT but not sure if I want to trade those for GTA just yet...
 
I went to the BB by work to pick up GTA: LCS guides, since I did a second in-store pickup order, split between two BB's. I ran through the shelves and all the pennied out guides were gone.

When I went to the CS counter, the rep into the back and pulled out my order. Which, oddly, was 3 copies of GTA: LCS. The game, not the guide. :wall: :wall: :wall:

The description of the item was GTA: Liberty City Stories (Game Guide) - PSP . :whistle2:s :wall::wall::wall: How they pulled the game is beyond me.

The rep called into the back and told them she needed the 3 guides I ordered. And from the back they came, and out the door for $0.03 they went. :D

I was a good CAG and told the CS rep that guides were $5 off at Gamestop & EB, since she said she was looking for a KH1 guide and couldn't find one anywhere. :D
 
I picked up Dragon Quest 8 via in store pickup... Also picked up M&L:piT guide while I was there.

The Bridgewater NJ BB had 1 more (beat-up) copy of DQ8, no other copies of Partner in Time, several copies of other recent penny guides - all marked for $0.01.

Picked up an extra DQ8 and Outfit guide if anyone wants them. Only willing to trade DQ8 for other RPG guides (either very recent RPGs or PSX). Oddly enough, the BB I went to had DQ8 but not some of the less desirable ones I was looking for (PD Zero, Gun).

How different will the PS2 version be from the PSP version? I was going to wait for the newest version, but if they're the same, then I might as well try to get the guide for PSP...

I can't imagine any significant differences in the guides. I think the only real difference in the game is that they dropped multiplayer.

I believe the PS2 game is the same as the PSP version, so it might just be controls that are different.

I compared the table of contents for both at EB Games, and they looked the same...

At 2 BB/s I found guides, another had none and I was denied for a short fat fuck at another BB , saying they had an "agreement with the publisher to return the books. " A load of shit I know, I could tell he was lying as he could not look my in the eyes when he said that. No big deal I found what I wanted, but I hate when they make up BS stories.
