07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. i tried to grab some gamecrazy guides today, but the guy said they are not in the system yet (he rang up baiten kaitos and geist). then he said to check later when they are in the system. he did print out the list with all the guides that they are about to throw out, but he said i couldn't get them yet since they are not marked for destruction.... arrgh! must be a regional thing.

I had a penny GoW guide in my hands at Best Buy months ago, only to have it swiped away by the video game section worker. After months of video game backlog, I'm finally on God of War, and a guide would be so useful. Thanks!

I'm gonna check my TRU for these, but only one store is left after the other's closing. :(
 
2 of my bestbuys have atleast 10 halo 2 guides in shrink wrap, when will this thing get pennied out? it is obvious that no one is buying these things!

Funcoland is part of Gamestop. It would seem that the few Funcolands that haven't been converted to Gamestop stores only haven't because of some contractual issues with their location. Something about not having too many stores with the same name in the same mall.

Thus, if Gamestop pennies out, Funcoland does too.

Though bad news for me. The most reliable EB, the one that had stacks of penny guides months or more after being pennied (ie. they had about 10 final fantasy crystal chronicles a month after they were pennied), had only 1 penny guide, and it was from a previous drop (fire emblem sacred strones, I must have missed it before). No ys, playboy, viewtiful joe etc., all guides that they had multiples of 2 weeks ago. They might have had a policy shift. They didn't ring up the fe:ss guide, and they always ring up and charge me for their penny guides (especially when I buy a game with it, like this time).

They still had massive amount of guides, but they weren't pennies. Though, just to point out (since I pricechecked about 4) the original Halo (Which I got pennied at gamestop a week or so ago), castlevania DOS, re outbreak file #2 (can't remember the other one I checked) aren't pennied yet.

My local PITA BB has at least 30 copies of Halo 2 shrink wrapped and priced at $9.99. If this goes penny... I hope I can beat the workers to them.

Same thing happened to me today. The EB I always get guides from, who usually has stacks of everything that was pennied out, had 2 this time. I got one copy each of Dynasty Warriors 5 and Devil Kings. I know they had Nightmare Before Christmas guides just a couple weeks ago, and I'm pretty sure Viewtiful Joe RHR as well (those were the two main ones I was looking for). Not sure if they pulled them this time, or if someone else has "discovered" my EB & cleaned them out.

Either way, I'm very interested in getting those two guides. The Dynasty Warriors 5 I picked up today is up for trade, as is everything in the list in my sig. Someone help me out! :)
 
Not a penny, but . . .

I was at Half-Price Books and found a few guides in their clearance section for $3 each . . . Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance (probably for a future trade) and the Making of Doom 3 (which is just a cool book).

Then at Mega Media Xchange (interesting newer store) I found a copy of Xenosaga I guide for $6.
 
Gamestop refused to sell the guides at a penny, even when I knew they were penny... he said I had to either buy them at full price, or they get destroyed, so I missed out on Geist and Champions: Return To Arms.

He told me that he used to give them away, but his manager chewed him out for it...essentially someone could get the guide for a cent, go back into a Gamestop, claim it was a gift, and return it for the full $14.99. I'm pretty sure he wasn't just feeding me a line of bullshit, because he told us if it was up to him he'd just give them to us to encourage customer relations, but he couldn't.

He said they had to rip the covers off as proof they were destroyed, and then throw the rest of the guide out... he wouldn't even let me have the coverless guide. It matched with the other stuff I had heard in this thread, so I didn't fight it, plus the employee talked to us for about 10 - 15 minutes about it.
 
my TRU has exactly 0 guides that were named to be pennied out tomorrow and I checked today.

Why do you think that is? Could they have sold out and never received more or did something with them knowing tomorrow they would be pennied out?

Sucks for me.

They are supposed to pull them BEFORE they get pennied out...so it just means they're doing their job.

That's any easy gamestop for returns. I've never seen a eb or gamestop take returns without a receipt, and I remember returning a guide once and having to argue with the guy because he kept saying htey wouldn't take them back since they can be used, but the receipt mentioned nothing about not taking book returns.

I didn't want to argue, since he was real polite and extremely nice, and I figured he had no interest in the guides anyways. Apparently it just came down from the manager that all penny guides were to be disposed of, not only for the return, but I just remembered he also told me when they sell it for a penny, or give it away, Gamestop is basacially losing money on that guide sale.

He talked to us for 15 minutes or so about all the different angles of this, he said if it was up to him we could have one, but he didn't want to take a chance. Like I said, it was just Geist and Return to Arms, nothing I'm going to lose sleep over.

I decided not to look in advance of the drop . . . just to give my trip tomorrow an element of surprise. My guess is that any guides will be gone (pulled most likely). I can't get over there until after noon . . . but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

That reminds me, the good EB that pulled their pennies guide is next to the good best buy, which yesterday I found out also rearranged their guides, put them in another area, and pulled the old penny ones. No idea if they're going to start keeping track of penny guides, but it's a bad sign.

But I bet tomorrow will be a wasted trip to TRU. I have classes from 10-7, so I won't be getting there till late.
 
Theres supposed to be a badass storm tonight or something, so i dont know if ill be able to 'safely' go to my TRU. But since i hid away the GOW guides, it might be safe.
 
Got denied today at my TRU which typically had never given me problems ringing them up before. There was a manager with a list pulling the guides and told the cashier she would have to ring them up at the regular price. I wonder if TRU's as a whole are starting to crack down or if I was just plain unlucky today.
 
With me it's been all or nothing with ToysRus. I prefer to never try early in the day when their full-time employees are there since that usually gets the teller to call the manager and eventually getting denied. Instead I wait until early evening, when the part-time kids come in who may not be as eager to call a manager to price check a penny item. I also never try to just buy penny guides. I try to buy a small item and then pass the penny guides.

Chesterfield, MO - 2 God of War Guides (1 for a friend), 1 Burnout Revenge Guide, 1 Conker Live & Reloaded Guide

Cashier was stunned at the prices but happy to sell them to me.

Sunset Hills, MO - 1 God of War Guide (for another friend) & Doom 3 Guide

Cashier said he would sell them to but he was going to remove the rest of the guides (hopefully he didn't the other games), so hopefully someone can still get lucky at this store
 
Got lucky. After ringing up the second penny guide the cashier called the manager and asked about the guides. I was thinking I was screwed and got too greedy, but the manager was cool and told the guy to sell them to me and then pull the rest. Hopefully he won't pull them all since I don't think he had a list and I didn't buy guides for all the pennied out ones.

I have an extra Jade Empire, Forza, and GoW if anyone is interested in a trade.
 
Well, i got to TRU and the guides were still there - so i went to look for a fodder game to buy along with the guides and when I got one (Ghost in the Shell PS2) the guides were pulled =[
So i just got my 2 GOW's that i stashed on Monday - guess thats cool. Any other guides wouldv'e just been trade fodder.

Woot, another St. Louis CAG. :D

I think you picked two of the better choices for penny guides at the St. Louis TRU's, since Bridgeton is closing/closed, Ferguson (270 & W Florissant) sometimes has 'em and sometimes doesn't, South County tends not to let penny guides go (if you find them there, don't pay for them in the RZone, go to the normal lanes to do it), and St. Peters is a hit or miss, depends on what RZone clerk is working there.

Since I had a nice chat with the RM for St. Louis about penny guides over the summer, I've not been checking TRU's for them, mainly because they tend to drop elsewhere quicker/earlier. I might swing by Sunset Hills and see what's there, maybe Chesterfield over the weekend.

Tried two TRU's as soon as they opened, and both had already pulled all their guides (one was in the process of doing it).

I don't care really, a friend is hopefully going to hook me up with God of War, and all the other drops are old or stuff I really don't care about.
 
Do you guys buy something along with the penny guides or do you ever ONLY buy the guides?I want to try to get a couple of guides but I know I will be shot down.

I got 13 guides (4 being doubles as I only grabed an extra of what I though would be of interest for trade here and not rot on my tradelist forever and alot of the guides that were pennied out looked somewhat shelf worn)

I couldn't get God of War has I haven't seen it at my TRU in months but hope that some kind soul has one to trade (hopefully with the DVD) for 2 guides as it seems as if people may not be finding it

Alright, I was able to get a few guides for trade. See my list below for an entire list. I'll do the God of War's as 2 for 1 or for 1 other rare guide. Here's what I picked up:
God of War x 2 (shrinkwrapped)
Conker x3
Doom 3
Burnout Revenge x2
Wrestlemania 21.
NBA Street V3
Jade Empire (shrinwrapped)
Forza (shrinkwrapped)

Also went to gamestop and found:
Genji and Suffering Ties that Bind. All up for trade as well.

There were others, but they have no real trade value and I have no interest in them.

I think there is a greater effort afoot to pull them.

They were already pulled at noon (couldn't get there any earlier) at my TRU. I did talk to the manager and he said that selling them for a penny counts against their loss prevention numbers. He also said that if I could find them on the shelf before they were pulled he would sell them.

The guy was pretty cool and basically said he thought it was stupid to destroy them.

There has to be. Two TRU's, that are usually really slow and don't give a shit whatsoever about penny guides, had already pulled them when I went there.

Got to the first TRU at 10:15 am, the guy was pulling the last of the guides off the shelf, and sticking them in the back. This is the TRU that usually has guides 3 months later after they penny, still sitting out there.

Got to the second TRU at about 11 am, all the guides had been pulled because there were big gaping holes where they used to be... I was told that just yesterday, they had tons and tons of guides. My friend actually went up and asked the guy about it, who said they couldn't sell them per corporate and they had to be destroyed.

A friend a few cities over, who had hidden a God of War yesterday, got denied at the register, and was told that he couldn't buy it, it wasn't supposed to be on the shelf, and it had to be destroyed.

Not sure what happened at TRU, at least around here, but someone came down on them hard for selling penny guides.
 
I went to ToysRus today picked up a whole bunch of guides and the guy said they wouldn't be a penny until tomorrow. I asked him to ring one up and he said it was 15.99. Anybody else run into this problem today. I'm sure they will all be gone tomorrow.

You should never get an employee to scan unless every in store scanner is down. I know usually $.01 price drops are YMMV, but I think today's drop was universal. Always find an in store scanner to check prices and when checking out try and find someome young.

Just got back from TRU i got 4 guides, all of the others were pulled, saved like 4 God of War guides, and none were around, the clerk was very hesitant about selling the guides, he called for someone to "key" the cash register, but i did got my two streetv3, yugioh and god of war guides...

Guess they have become very picky about selling them, most reliable being BB at the moment...

I've never seen a toys r us with scanners in the video game section, and I've been to tons in new hampshire, maine, vermont, massachusetts and upstate new york.

And I got nothing at toys r us. Though there was this really hot girl working there, but I think she needed psychological attention. It seems like every time I looked up she was walking toward me. Then after a while I figured out what she was doing, she was walking in circles around the whole video game department. She did it for the entire 5 or 10 minutes I was there. She wasn't stopping at anything either.

They're not in the R'Zone they're scattered throughout. Locations are usually:

- Near Bicycles and R/C cars
- Girls Toys (mock kitchens and princess stuff)
- Childrens clothing
- Baby Equipment (cribs, walkers, etc.)
- Board Games

I do that when I talk on the phone...walk in circles around the house...used to drive my dad crazy when I lived at home. I don't even know I'm doing it until some one points it out usually.
