CAGiversary!
Feedback

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.
And all the R'Zones I've seen have security sensors, so I'm not about to start walking out of there with merchandise.
But do they have sensors on guides?
But do they have sensors on guides?
Not on any of the ones at my TRU.
And all the R'Zones I've seen have security sensors, so I'm not about to start walking out of there with merchandise.
You're not serious! Sure if there is a security sticker and you walk out the alarm beeps about 3 times...whoopty freakin do... employees can't do anything except ask you to bring the item back in. Also if you can manage to walk directly in the middle of the 2 sensors the alarm doesn't even sound. Reguardless of how you take the items out of the R'zone it is not like you're stealing. Just like toys, books and board games you have the right to scan whatever you want.

TRU started cracking down last fall but it seems that it's really being enforced now since they've been having some obvious financial problems (all the store closings). I haven't got any at my TRU since August or September.
I hate this weather in the Northeast, as I got kind of snowed in today. It wasn't too bad, but the local road crews weren't doing their jobs quickly, so the roads were still pretty covered by 9:30 am. I was so wired overnight about going to TRU and grabbing some guides for either trade or to Ebay them, but now I'm wondering if there will be any left by tomorrow.

You know, I've only ever been ALMOST denied at ONE Best Buy and that was just on Monday in Syracuse. Honestly, I know I should have more confidence in the drop lists on CAG, but how foolish would I look if I grabbed 2-3 copies of each guide that dropped, only to have them ring up full price?

That's why when and if I ask an employee to price check a guide for me, I tell them 'my one buddy said these guides were supposed to drop in price'. Honestly though, I'm still looking(in vain it seems) for a copy of The Suffering:Ties That Bind, but I'm not willing as of yet to go the trade route. I keep hoping ONE of my local GS/EB/Gamecrazy or even BB stores will have it STILL in stock.

Anyway, I may try and go out tomorrow to see what I can find at my local TRU, probably nothing though, but eh, who knows.
Just find a empty computer that can do the search, press F10 and scan the guides youself. Hit Esc when you're done. If someone comes and ask what you're doing, just say you need someone to pricecheck, but noone was around for so long. Then say you're about to complain to the manager... but decided to save both parties trouble and did the pricecheck yourself

oh, and if anyone get a extra GoW guide, please CML for trade. Thanks

I've used a little rubbing alchohol on a cloth and the residue comes right off with no damage to the book.
And honestly, some of those security stickers are a royal PITA to get off, even when they're on the plastic from game cases.
Funny how the acronym PITA means Pain In The A**. It makes total sense now seeing how annoying the organization is.

PITA= Pain in the Ass
PETA= People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

They are pronounced the same. And no I'm not an advoate for PETA... :bomb:

Also, pita is a type of bread (and good bread at that).

Edit: Looks like I'm a little slow.

cml for all the guides i got. i don't think my TRU helpers give a fuck. during the $10 RE4s they were a little perplexed, but not as much as a penny for a guide. the retard cashier was like, WOW you could rack up on ebay. i was like, "yeah, its my retirement plan"

Don't laugh, I made about 4k-5k in profits (ie. not counting the cost of buying) in the summer of 2004, and then made anywhere from 3-5k during the school year. It was the only job I had, since canada wouldn't give me a work visa. Paid for cable, apartment, food etc., with plenty left over. If it wasn't for ebay I would have been living in my car eating generic cheerios all day long.

And work was fun too. I love shopping and seeing different places, and I got to travel to tons of torontos surrounding cities and suburbs while "working". Best job ever.

If it wasn't for ebay I would have been living in my car eating generic cheerios all day long.

And work was fun too. I love shopping and seeing different places, and I got to travel to tons of torontos surrounding cities and suburbs while "working". Best job ever.
selling penny guides?

Okay, stopped by and picked up a few more guides, although it seems this time I alerted the rzone person to pull them (eventually). Didn't make a big fuss, though, as the guide section needs a good cleaning. Scored another God of War, Conker, and NBA street v3. Please check my list if you want a God of War guide, and have older guides available (still looking for BloodRayne 2 and older ones).
selling penny guides?
Almost all the stuff I sold was games and related stuff (the sopor aeternus cd box sets being the only sizeable exception). Most of the stuff I picked up from random game stores (ma and pa, as well as chains) such as valkyrie profile, suikoden II, rhapsody etc. Much of the rest was penny and 95 cent guides. Penny guides were american, the 95 cent ones were picked up in canada. For example, I found multiple skies of arcadia guides for 95 cents at a bunch of future shops, which I immediately sold for 50 bucks each. I found about 25 steel battalion guides for 95 cents each, and sold them for about 25 a piece etc. I also had a bunch of good finds in canadian toys r us' (like a sealed disney dance mix). But guides were the main source. The canadian best buys and futureshops, where I got the 95 cent ones, were better than their american penny counterparts though, since they were designed to sell (not destroy), and there wasn't anything like CAG in canada, so basically it seemed as if I was the only one who knew about these clearances. The only problem was most didn't mark them, but enough did to get an idea. I eventually developed an extensive mental list of what was clearanced. The only time I'd ever really hoard though is when it would be stupid not to, such as when I can spend 25 bucks and get 500 out of it (ie. the steel battalion guides). I left a lot of less profitable stuff behind, stuff that still would have made money.

Though now, since I actually can work again, I'm back to primarilly collecting stuff, and what I sell on ebay goes to finance my video game habit.
Got skunked on GOW at both BB (months ago) and TRU . . . this new crackdown on penny guides really sucks.
so BB and CC will ring up .01 on GOW and the other TRU markdowns? sorry i'm new to the penny guides

went to EBGames and found out that Fable for xbox is pennied out too .. might be kinda old, but just a heads up. I got it for free too!
so BB and CC will ring up .01 on GOW and the other TRU markdowns? sorry i'm new to the penny guides
No - each store has its own drops. BB was just ahead of the game with GOW

I would say that your chances of getting a GOW guide at Best Buy are zero, but I bet one store in the nation has them on their shelf. According to the master list (first page of this thread) the drop occured in Sept of last year . . . 6 months ago!

Circuit City has very little known history of reducing guides to a penny.

Try your local TRUs (or trade with someone on this thread).

Went to the TRU in South County, MO and found some of the penny guides there. Picked up the following:

Forza (x3)
Burnout Revenge (x3)
Ghost Recon 2 (x3)
Rainbow Six Lockdown (x3)

There were more of the above there, and unfortunately, no GoW guides. Rep in the RZone was surprised by the penny guides and happily sold them to me. I'll have to remember that one for the next drop. None of the other recently dropped guides there, either, except maybe for the Yu-Gi-Oh guide.

So went to the mall in Queens, NY on Sunday, and opted to quickly go into one of the Ebgames there. I immediately noticed that there was a large selection of penny guides, which is never the case around the ebgames here, so I knew something was strange. So, I looked around and picked a Psychonauts guide that I already own, but wanted to have for trade. Brought it up to the counter where a guy and a girl were sharing the register. The guy rings it up, and I saw that he mumbled 'a penny' to himself, and then proceeded to do a quick price override, and asked me for $10.83 (at this point I knew it was a definite override). So, I said okay I don't want it. Then the girl gets all agressive with me, and starts asking me questions. So, I said 'look, I know that guide is discontinued, and you're choosing to charge $10.83 for it, but I'm not going to pay that price'. She continued to go on the offensive, saying that because it was discontinued they were charging less than the $14.99 on the front. I just left. My question would be how often do you guys think that managers instruct their workers to do these overrides, instead of destroying the guides and returning the covers to the publishers? Does this process bring in more money than getting the publishers to refund them? This is the first time someone has opted to charge me 'their own price', instead of just refusing the sale.

Does anyone have any idea if Best Buy will be adding some new .01 guides today or tomorrow since its the first of the month?

Thanks,

vgc

Doubt it, their website still shows 29 guides, they usually pull them off the site before they penny them.

Its possible. Halo 2(!), Gun, Mortal Kombat Shaolin monks might be some good candidates. Maybe also some of the 360 launch title guides like Condemned, Quake etc, since they already dropped the PGR3 guide last time round.

Yea but look at what some of those guides are - NCAA Football 2004? Tomb Raider angel of darkness?? And they pulled Halo 2 off their site long ago, and that hasn't been pennied. Maybe its worth checking the site again after midnight. They did drop about 15-16 guides last month, so maybe they're done for a while, but you never know with BB!!

Just to give you a heads up, TRU does get a list of the .01 guides aswell as other price drops such as the 9.99 games a week before they go into effect. It just depends if the rzone employe does their job to know about it. By the way if you ever get denied a .01 guide buy a cheap 9.99-12.99 game with a BBP and they would probably give ya every .01 guide they had.
"also a little hint if ya wanna save $10, buy a psp 1Gig memory stick from them before thursday"

I managed to sneak in and take about a dozen guides under the nose of the manager who was pulling them all off the shelf. Gotta love how management doesnt tell the employee's jack because the guy at cash register had no idea she was removing them because they couldnt be sold.

I wasnt able to snag a copy of god of war so if anyone has one for trade lemme know. Will trade 2 guides for it.

My available list is located here http://gametz.com/usertab/brian9824/tab/AllAvailable.html

Just picked up:

Forza Motorsports (Prima)
Jade Empire (Prima)
Conker Live & Reloaded (Prima)
Doom 3 (Prima)
Star Wars III : Revenge of the Sith (Prima)
Burnout Revenge (Prima)
Rainbow Six Lockdown (Prima)
Yu-Gi-Oh! Destiny Board Traveler (Prima)
NBA Street v3 (Prima)
WWE Wrestlemania 21 (Prima)

Also have: Soul Calibur III (Brady) from BB also.

Looking for:

God of War Guide ( I will toss in a $5 off 19.99 Video game coupon @ BB plus trade for this)

PM if you want to trade. Thanks
So nothing from BB today? I completely forgot to check.
Yeah, I'm surprised that there wasn't anything.

Last few times BB dropped 'em, they've done it in the middle of the week. Worth checking them a few times through the week to see if they drop any guides.

My guess is Gun might be one, since most of the console versions are $30 or less.

it is also possible they might drop some PC guides instead. Also there is no relation between the price of game and guides that are pennied. Games can be full price and the guide get pennied, while other times the game's price drop but the guide is still full price.

Went back to the Gamestop that refused guides... two different people were there, they give me the Geists they left on the shelf. 1 for me, 1 is for trade.

What's also messed up, is I found old penny drops at Best Buy... Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Starfox Assault. Both rang up full price?!? I looked like a complete idiot at the register... I brought up two copies of each to buy =X

Found every penny guide minus God of War at a TRU, girl was confused by it all, called a manager, manager told her over the phone that "they had to be destroyed" so I walked out with nothing.

I went to Best Buy today to grab Genji and saw several 360 guides in a pile where they usually throw old penny guides. I didn't have them scanned though. Usually, seeing them in that pile is a good indication that they're either already pennied or will be very soon. The actual guide racks had been recently cleaned out and were half empty...so I guess they are expecting a new shipment this week and were making room....otherwise why throw half the guides in a big pile on a shelf 2 aisles over?

I double checked Bestbuy online to see if maybe they just recently pulled some guides... it shows 26 guides now, down from 29, but all the 360 guides are still full price =/

I'm not noticing anything big as being missing, either.

Looks like they just removed shit like Tomb Raider.

As soon as they drop FFIV and Mario and Luigi, I'm there.
Doesn't Best Buy get new shipments on Thursdays? Might drop them if that's when they get in the new guides.
They get new shipments throughout the week... usually not a set date. I imagine they get their guides through UPS, same way as the games (if they ship through UPS... K-Mart and TRU got their stuff this way when I worked there), and UPS comes Mon - Fri usually.
As soon as they drop FFIV and Mario and Luigi, I'm there.
I have a Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga guide for trade, if that's which one you wanted.

Also, my b/f scored a bunch of guides, so if anyone wants Jak X:Combat Racing, True Crime:NYC, The Matrix:poN, Conker, NCAA Football 2006, or Ultimate Spiderman, PM me.

I have the old one... I don't know from where, and I forgot I had it until I just looked, but yea, it's there. Where did it come from?
