CAGiversary!

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2

can anyone who works at EB confirm the GT4 hardbook price? No point in checking it out if its not marked down to 0.01... also, I think guild wars is $9.99 at BB, I bought that last month at that price, but I thought once BB drops the price (like to $9.99 or $4.99), it stays that way for awhile (like Shaolin Monks or Clone Wars)...

Media Mail is technically for things that d not contain advertisements in them. bound printed media is for things like manuscripts. It is possible if the post office inspects your package they will send it back asking for more postage, it has happened to me a couple times becuase I have goine through a few post offices trying to figure out what exactly they will accept. Flat rate priority mail is sometimes best becuase some guides can run about $4.50 or more for first class mail which is done by weight.

I always send out my guides media mail. Media mail includes books and a guide is a book.
Also, first class mail ends at 13oz - which is about 3.30 or so I believe. After that it becomes priority.
Ive also never seen a flat rate box that would fit a guide in it, unless you are talking about the $7.70 flat rate boxes. The flat rate envelopes might, but they wont be very sturdy.

Not sure if you were replying to a previous post with this... In my experience, they've always threatened me with the 'All Media Mail is subject to inspection' line, but I've never had a package returned to me because of it. Lately, the more annoying problem has been their desire to decline DC because the envelope is not 3/4 of an inch or more (per the post rules).

I've sent 1-4 guides in global flat rate priority envelopes without issue. Though I've only done it 4 or 5 times. It's sturdy cardboard and the guides pretty much pad themselves.

Just throw in crumpled newspaper. Adds depth, but not weight. I use that whenever I have a gift card to send.

Have the following been pennied out at GS and/or EB?

Star Ocean: Till the end of time
Star Wars: Episode III
Xenosaga II

So many penny guides, so little time...................
I remember when I first got wind of guides pennying out I got excited like you too. But you will quickly realize these guides take up a lot of space so I also focus on getting guides for games I already own (or plan to own). I rarely even pick up extras now unless I know for sure I'll be able to trade them away.

Yup - the GF isn't too keen on the stacks of guides. Doesn't mind the actual collection sitting neatly on a shelf, its the extras.

Think of them as an emergancy heat source in case of disaster. :D

It dosen't help that the fact that CAG'ers only have other recent drops to trade, all of which I have. I've got about 30 - 40 leftover guides, which I'm considering just dumping on Ebay for 99 cents + shipping.

My answer is just "Honey, I am going to trade them with other people, and get lots of guides I can use!"

Then she responds with "Well, you've only traded three guides in about a month, I think you need to rethink your plan".

Give us CAg'r a shot at the .99 cents first , of course

Its probably better to put them on Half.com - that way you arent on a timelimit for selling them. The lesser desired guides dont sell very quickly.

Some that I thought would be hot for trades have just sat . . . like MGS3 Snake Eater . . . I got 3 extras and have never traded one of them.

I think I may do a clearance sale here on CAG at some point. $3.50 shipped for the first one and $2 extra for additional guides (on select guides anyway).

I would kill to buy some of your guides from you guys... Guess Ill just have to vulture this topic and wait for the kill till you do :D

If you visit the trading forum, you'll find many CAGs selling guides for $4-5.00 bucs a piece, which barely covers the shipping cost on some of the thicker guides. I know there was at least one post there, where a guy was moving, and all you had to do was pay for shipping. So, if you really want them, you just have to visit the forum.

Got a big guide score tonight - not a penny , but "reduced price" so i guess it belongs here =]

Went to Microcenter(where i picked up 5 baldur's gate 2 last nite) and went to their clearance rack where there was a TON of older guides. I picked out like 50 guides i wouldve been interested in, but prices were still about 10-12 after the 30% off that was advertised.
I found a manager and asked him if i could get a bulk discount. He said he could take an additional 20% the final price, and took one of my guides to manually input the SKU into a nearby computer. It came up at 3.50$.
He let me check the rest of my guides, so i narrowed it down to about 25 to get and the manager overrode the final price when i paid.
Heres what i got, good stuff bolded...

Pikmin - Prima = $1.67

Resident Evil 1 Gamecube - Brady = $7.11

Yea i never thought they did - but then i noticed some blurb sign near the games saying they have a game guide section in the book area. Then BAMM, treasure trove.:drool::drool:
Jade Empire $5 + $4 shipping = $9 (Still expensive). Seems like i must check out local CC instead online ;)
Maybe as an add-on if you order other stuff to get over the free shipping hump, $25 I think. Jade Empire is still $15 in-store, I checked it yesterday. Maybe someone will PM the site for you. I would at my store, I have 4 copies to get rid of.

I have had a problem with the people at the best Buys and Toys r' Us allowing me to purchase the guides that are marked .01 and it is getting me mad. they will not take them off the shelves but they will not sell them. It makes no sense. Either take them off the floor or sell them. Has anyone else had this problem? :bomb:

I have for sale some guides, what ones are you looking for? On hadn I have the ratchet deadlocked, 007 From Russia, Spartan Total Warrior, True Crime NYC, Jak X....

Best Buy should not be giving you any problems, the 4 around my area just scans them and sells them to my, one of them even went to ask the store manager but it turned out fine. TRU on the other hand pulls everything. Its all very dependant on the location, if you can try another store.

Picked up these guides at a mom and pop bookstore.

All new...

Xenogears - 4.95
Jet Force Gemini N64 Guide - 1.00
King of Fighters Maximum Impact - 1.00
Geist - 1.00
Rumble Roses - 1.00

Any of these have any value ?
who would actually pay 90 bucks for a guide? I guess i'll go stow away a couple of my penny guides now....
I sold my Skies of arcadia Legends Guide for $81. And it was USED.
who would actually pay 90 bucks for a guide? I guess i'll go stow away a couple of my penny guides now....
It is for this reason that I started buying guides for pretty much any RPG that has one available.

You will never know which game or guide will climb into high numbers, espically once they get pennied out and disappear forever.

I sold a ff7 versus guide for 100. That one gets me more than any other, since there are tons of ff7 guides. I can understand xenogears, thousand arms etc. having value, but ff7 for 100?

Though ones that drive me crazy are lufia guides (1 and 2). They sell for 30-100 depending on who the hell knows. I've been trying to get them for about 20 each, came close a few times but never got them.
OK, it seems my luck with the local EB stores is running out. Sadly, my one local EB(where I scored 2 copies of HL 2:Raising the Bar not more than 2 weeks ago) has 2 copies of the GT 4 hardcover book IN STOCK. So, I took one to the register, it didn't want to scan, so the clerk manually entered the barcode numbers. It came up .01, as I had expected, to which the clerk was befuddled by. A co-worker of his kind of whispered 'do an override', at which point the total became $37.09 with the tax.

I essentially told them I didn't want it at that price and very hastily left.

I may try going back when the clerk who told the other one to do the over ride isn't there and just buy the copies out THEN.

This makes 2-3 GS/EB stores within a week to deny me a penny guide, which was clearly still out on the floor for SALE.

I went to a GS store up the road a bit later, looking for a copy of the same book, to no avail. I also asked the one clerk there if an item comes up as .01, do they have to sell it to me. She told me yes and that some stores would just GIVE them to me.

Either way, this is kind of frustrating. However, I went for a drive down the line and found ANOTHER EB at a different mall with 2 MORE copies of the GT 4 book.
It's been hit or miss for me as well. The last time I checked at an EB around here...the worker did a manual override, not to the original price, but to some random number ($10.83), which I refused. A lot of these stores are in trouble with the merger, and I think they're just trying to keep their profits up, so they don't get shut down...although penny guides won't change crappy customer service, and bad company policies (not referring to penny guides).

The Final Fantasy VII Versus guide is really good IMO, I think between that and that it may not be as common as the Brady guide is what makes it so sought after. My friend had the Brady guide & the Versus guide since way back shortly after Final Fantasy VII came out. I barrowed the Versus guide and used it to help me get all the extras and only looked though the Brady guide which I didn't like the formart of, mostly text and all reading IIRC.

OH and also, that last update for Gamecrazy has a wrong listing. It's Final Fantasy Tactics that is marked down, not Dawn of Souls. Also you can add Castlevania Lament Of Innocence to the list as well. A gamecrazy employee showed me their list of markdowns and that was on there. There were a couple of others on there too that are not on our list but I can't remember what they were. Anyone care to confirm this that works at GC?

Eh, if I worked at EB I'd take all the penny guides, put them behind the counter, and give them free to all my regular, paying customers. If anyone came in I'd never seen before asking for them, I'd give them a couple if they actually bought something and as many as they wanted if they spent a lot of money. Just from a business point of view, it makes no sense to give guide hoarders free guides if they don't usually spend a lot of money in your store. I've been in retail for years and the whole "do it for the goodwill" argument doesn't hold water since customers have very short memories for the nice things you do and very long memories about anything that goes wrong.

I've never been refused a penny guide, but then I've never taken any up to the counter without taking a few games up to buy at the same time.
LOL Dragon, you mean like the days back when EB was super disorganized and used to charge varying prices for games at different stores?

I can recall going to buy a copy of a game for Genesis at one EB, then going down the line about 10-20 miles and finding the same game for almost half of what the other store had it for.

I already mentioned this in another post on this thread, but this happened in Middletown, NY. Anyway, here's how it went:

I went to the Galleria Mall, to scope out their EB and FYE for potential fodder games and penny guides. So, I go into the EB there, finding copies of the Darkwatch guide, as well as another penny guide(don't remember which).

I take them up to the register and have them rung up, after which the clerk tells me he 'can't sell them to me'.

Why not, I ask, already knowing WHY. He mentions that they're being cleared out and the whole shpeel. Then, he adds in that if I buy a game at full price, he will give me ONE of each of the guides. How GENEROUS of him. LOL

He then offers me a second option to grab at least ONE guide with. He says 'buy a guide at full price and I'll give you ONE guide'. You know, if it wouldn't have been looked down upon as being genuinely rude, I would've told him to stick those guides up his ummmmm ya know.

Besides the fact, I believe this was the same day I had (mostly) cleaned out the Best Buy near that mall. So, I had more than enough guides for my liking for that day, just that the Darkwatch and other penny guides I saw there would've been icing on the cake.

Speaking of penny guides, I may well take a trek down towards Hazleton area tomorrow to try and grab 2 copies of the GT 4 guide for .01 that I saw on a side shelf there. The one employee told me he would 'put one aside' for me.

I hope his manager didn't simply tell him to 'destroy' them.
I would try to get him to give me 2 penny guides for 1 game, but if I really wanted a guide I just would have bought the game and then returned it to another EB. I always try to buy something if I grab more than 1 guide. I try to find something I genuinely want, but sometimes I can't. In those cases I just buy something and return it to another eb. Even when I have like 8 penny guides listed on the receipt, no one gives me any grief. Once the employee said to another employee "they're not supposed to sell these, I should go there and grab some for myself". But that was the only time it was even mentioned.

My thing is though when there's an alternative why did it get so high?

Saw the following guides at GS/EBgames. Were they pennied out?

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Star Wars: Episode III
Xenosaga II
