CAGiversary!
Feedback

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2

I went into an EB close to where I'm at and found 2 copies of the GT4 hardcover book. Stickered on the front at $34.99, and innocently I asked if the person behind the counter (which I found later to be the store manager) could check the price on 'em. The UPC didn't scan and the SKU # came up, and it was $0.01. I asked her if I could buy them, and she did.  Since I was there to use my $50 GC from Xmas, I picked up Super Mario Strikers (since they had a sealed copy) while I was there. I picked up the two books + SMS and was out the door.

Total out of my pocket was under $4 for all of it.

I picked up a few guides at Half Price Books yesterday--I get 10% off for teacher discount:

Bard's Tale for $4 (I have a feeling I may already have this from EB--need to look . . . in that case $3.60 was a bad deal but I wasn't certain and I can't get back there for a week)

Romancing Saga (close to mint) was in the clearance area for $3 . . . has this been pennied anywhere?

It looked more like a regular book /w pictures than a game guide.

Found the a (last) copy of Ultimate Spiderman guide at BB. I was surprised to see it there since it should have been removed from the shelf long time ago.

it's "Driving the Game: The GT Experience". Here's a link to the book on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0761548742/

Is this at all locations of said stores. I was just wondering cause I am still getting used to the site and all. If so are they marked down so you will know or do you just have to take them up to register and hope the ring up .01 at that store?

Should be at all locations, and at Gamestop and Toys R' Us, you'll have to get it scanned. Dunno about toher stores.

On a separate note, when does GS plan to drop some more guides? There's a few I'm interested in :D

Ok, can someone who got the Stubbs guide from EB please provide the SKU? I found 2 copies today at EB but they would not scan at all. They told me if I got the SKU from someone else it would be a penny. So, if someone can help me out, I'll be able to help someone else out by getting an extra copy!
Rarebucky, simply take up another guide from one of the lists in the first post on this thread to the register with at least ONE copy of the Stubbs guide. They should realize that since it's no longer in the system and won't even bring up info for it that it has been cleared out.

That's how I got my second copy of the Stubbs guide, by simply taking it with another guide to the register.

I'd really suggest trying to find a copy of the Dawn Of War: Winter Assault PC game guide.

It should be on the rack with the PC games or near the used PC games.

At least it was in the store I went to.

Or, find a copy of the Darkwatch guide and take that up.

As for them telling you you need to bring in the SKU, thats just so I guess they cover their own backsides.

Honestly, I would just go back in there when someone ELSE is working, if I were you and just bring ONE of the Stubbs guides up with maybe a 'fodder' game(cheap $5 used game).

This kind of throws off suspicion that you're just there for the penny guides(which I usually AM LOL) and should tell the employees that you aren't just a guide hoarder.

LOL Speaking of guide hoarding, I got my one cousin who is a car dealer to stop in Syracuse tonight at the Carousel Mall to go to the Best Buy there.

I snagged 2 more copies of the Matrix Path Of Neo guide, plus 2 more Matrix Online guides, a couple more D&D Dragonshard, another Ratchet Deadlocked, another Spartan Total Warrior and an Empire Earth II guide.

And ya know, this is the first time I think a clerk has asked me if I 'own all the games I'm buying the guides for'. LOL I had to chuckle at my answer.

Anyway, do like i said rarebucky and they should give you no problem about getting at least ONE copy of the Stubbs guide for gratis. However, I wouldn't hit the SAME store 2 times in one day, like I did to get my multiple Half Life 2 hardcover book copies.
Someone is addicted ;)

Ok, so I went back to that Gamecrazy where I got some guides the other day. The manager whom I've made friends with tells me I could not have stopped in on a better day. They were just finishing pulling all their penny guides and she told me to take what I wanted!:bouncy: So here goes the list for this haul:

:gc: :xbox: Advent Rising
:ps2: :xbox: Area 51 X2 (Had to grab more of these since I've traded the others already);)
:ps2: :xbox: Dead To Rights II
:ps2: :xbox: Forgotten Realms Demon Stone
:ps2: Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3
:ds: Dragon Ball Z Supersonic Warriors 2
:ps2: Jak 3 X2
:ps2: :xbox: :gc: :gba: :pc: Need For Speed Underground 2
:ps2: Resident Evil Outbreak File #2
:ps2: Tenchu: Fatal Shadows -->TRADED
:ps2: The Getaway: Black Monday W/DVD
:gc: WWE Day Of Reckoning 2 X2
:ps2: WWE Smackdown Vs. Raw
:ps2: Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monster Coliseum
:gba: Yu-Gi-Oh! Destiny Board Traveler

:xbox: Guides
Dead Or Alive Ultimate X3
Jade Empire w/DVD X2
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dawn Of Destiny

And the ones I'm keeping:
Demon Stone
Fire Emblem Sacred Stones
Nanobreaker
Tekken 5
Ultimate Gamers Codebook

All these are in addition to my list above and are FT/FS excluding what I'm keeping of course.;)
I can't wait for their next penny drop! All guides are in great condition.

I found Half-Life 2 Raising the Bar and Advance Wars at an EB games but they wouldn't give me them for a penny. They offered them at half price... I said no thank you. I never have good luck at EB games... On contrary, Best Buy is so easy.
But do they have sensors on guides?
(at TRU)

not typically but the only kind i have seen on a guide would be either on the inside front or back page and its a 1 by 1 inch purpleish/redish metal like sticker. Obviously its use location and type may vary.

i have noticed an increased number of people mentioning that eb / gamestop said that guide X is not in the system. I was talking with a fairly knowledgeable and truthful employee at a EB yesterday and he said that they are transferring store system one at a time to a hybrid system between GS inventory system and EB inventory system. This might explain the removal of guides from the system.

This has the posibility of eliminating one cent guides all together. If a guide is not in the system they obviously wont give it to you for a penny but could still at option sell it to you for cover. Also If you say no then they would could eiter leave it on shelf for cover price till next inventory at which point it could get removed or pull it to confirm removal from system. Both possibly eliminating most opportunities for pennied guides. If anyone who works at a EB or GS that been converted could please give us a more detailed explination of what has transpired it would be much appreciated. Please ignore the spelling mistakes as i am tired and my fingers feel like butter.

That would definately suck... maybe EB / GS caught on to all the people snagging tons and tons of penny guides, and this is their way to put a stop to it?

I wouldn't worry too much .
They'll still have to dispose of guides .

One good thing about the merge is I never had an inside guy @ Gamestop .
Now I don't have to worry the computer systems will be merged .;)

this could apply to several stores, the exception to this is if its not in the system there is no for sure way of knowing if it is clearanced out or just another computer mistake.

hmmm where is 'Crash Override' and 'Acid Burn' when you need them...
EB/GS stopping people from grabbing penny guides? Say it ain't so...........LMFAO

Honestly, it's been a bit of a mixed bag for me, as far as grabbing them or not.

But really, the only books I'm after lately, are those luscious $34.99 HL 2/GT4 books that're pennied out.

Otherwise, I think EB/GS can KEEP Stubbs and Darkwatch and Winter Assault.

However, I would still like a copy of the guide for GEIST, assuming I can find another copy of it at any TRU for 10 bucks.
Haha, you get another GT 4 book, and I'll trade you a copy of the guide Geist :p

Thank you for your gamecrazy additions to this thread they are much appreciated. Also the alphabetical order really saves me a lot of time. Thank you and please keep posting whatever whenever available. Thanks.

Well, taking them out of the inventory would just encourage employees snagging tons of guides, so I doubt they'd do that. Never know of course.

No problem, I'm happy to contribute to the list. As I mentioned before, the manager has agreed to set aside any guides when they drop so I may have a look at them. I'll update whenever I get more.:D

ive never gotten a penny guide at Gamestop. EB games ive gotten big scores at, but not lately. Best buy and Toys R Us have always been 100% - assuming they were still on the shelves.

Never found anything at GS, got turned down at EB. TRU I've had 100% but only one has had any guides, and it's the one in my home town (some 7 hours away). They'd let me have them because they knew me there since I'd gone to the story a million times over the first green tag sale.

Best Buy I've had success. I love it when I see the actual item at a penny on the shelf. That makes me feel all warm inside.

the hardest place to get a penny guide was toys r us. even though i worked there they wouldnt give me it for a penny.

gamestop 100% thats where i got those 70 guides that one time

eb about 90% if the manager isnt there they would give it to me for a penny or sometimes for free but if the manager is there then nope

went to my first Fry's today. I didn't even know there was one in indiana. It reminds me of a circuit city on steroids. Any who I asked a gentleman who claimed to have worked there for some time what there guide policy was. He said that basically he never heard of any clearing out or returning of guides. He said they usually just keep droppping in price till they sell. After checking several guides this seemed to ring true. Also it seemed that they had their own SKU that things were entered under in their store. All the guides checked matched their tag but i suppose there is a possibility that they could drop some and not get new tags, Well I know this isnt some vital news but at least it might be a start for fry's handling of guides. Any more verified info from anyone would be appreciated.

I've been to Fry's when I've been to Houston and California and I've had amazing success with guides there. Last week I got a Super Mario Advance guide for a penny and previously I've found Ogre Battle 64 and ZOE2 guides there for less than $10 each, and that was this year! What a strange store...

hrm....thank you for reminding me to pick up those ultra old guys at microcenter, i think i saw ZOE 1, dreamcast launch guide, battle realms, and some other monstrously old stuff
LOL I have to admit, I've had alot more success too when the manager wasn't at the store(s). And getting clerks who feel they MUST call a manager when something comes up to that price, really sucks.

That's what happened last night at that one EB, bunch of new clerks in a store I go in ALOT, they called the one guy(who I guess became manager when the reg one quit) and he came back to the store and POOF, there went my luck.

Then again, I brought only the 3 guides up, trying to act like they would come out to reg price, so that may have been part of the problem.

However, if I had brought up a game to the register with the guides and they refused to sell me the guides but would willingly sell me the game, then I would've just left.

And actually, I asked an employee at the one GS about if penny guides are out there, are they supposed to sell them to customers. The answer I was given was 'if they are on the shelf, then YES, they had no right to do an override on you and you should have been sold/given those guides'.

So, I guess GS corporate is getting ANOTHER email from me regarding ANOTHER non compliant store.
You might wanna be careful about speaking to corporate about these types of things. Most likely, all it will lead to is a memo being sent out to all the stores that says that they need to pull guides immediately and to stop leaving them out. And then, the majority of the penny guides will disappear from GS/EB.

Agree 100%.

QFT.

To reiterate

DO NOT CONTACT GS CORPORATE ABOUT STORES NOT SELLING .01 GUIDES!

If you make them aware of how prevalent this is they will really drop the hammer. Just be satisfied that you're able to get some guides at least some of the time.

Jeez man, just quit while you're ahead. All the posts you've made in this thread over the last few weeks, you must have gotten over 100 penny guides, and now you're freaking out over ONE store that refuses to give them to you? Some people aren't able to get any penny guides from their local stores, so be thankful for the obscene amount of stuff you've been able to get so far, and move on.

QFT=Quoted for truth. ahh, now i get it... (thanks wikipedia. haha)

btw, this is to IAmTheCheapestGamer, "You are screwing urself over." You'll just end up posting on this thread saying "my eb/gs doesn't sell me any penny guides anymore..." like me. *sob*

Got a DW 5 today at a Gamestop...I asked for a price check, since "I thought I saw it cheaper at a different Gamestop" and it came up 1 cent, and the guy is like "its not in the system... we really can't sell this" and slipped it into my bag. They said to keep it on the hush hush (whoops) and that since I found it, I can just have it, and they were very adamant about not ringing it up. I said I don't have a penny and they said "its ok, just take it"

They had two copies of Urban Reign there, but I really didn't want to push my luck, so I'll go back at a later time. This is the same DW 5 I got rejected on about two weeks ago, guy told me it was full price... pretty strange.

I saw a Wind Waker guide, thought it was a penny and was excited, but it turns out it was just the Prima version which is still full price.

Dynasty Warriors 5 is up for trade.

In other news, that Harvest Moon: Magical Melody guide really sucks.

Yeah, that damned Prima guide for WindWaker will never drop. I've checked a few times (I keep forgetting), and it always rings up full price (not even a damned reduction to 10 bucs).

Master list updated

I was able to retrive a complete list of all guides from a converted EB/GS system.

THATS 2300+ GUIDES ¡!¡!¡!

I removed any guides that were cover price. All the rest were either 1 or 2 cents unless otherwise noted. I edited some for full titles but most are still not the full title as thats all the computer system shows. Please Please keep in mind that since the titles are not all completely listed that you may see one that is listed but there may have been 2 releases (metriod prime guide was released twice, Resident Evil 4 was for the gamecube the a guide for the ps2 version) or a different extension to the title (Brother in arms: road to hill 30 and Brother in arms: earned in blood) Many are old of course but here is all of them. If you ever find a massivly disorganized location who knows you may get lucky. Good Luck to all and keep the contributions coming.
Hahahahaha I guess I should give up while I'm ahead. But, as Pook on here said and I agree, I'm a bit addicted.

I still find it hilarious though, that I can go to a bigger mall, which has 2 EB's, one will sell the guides at whatever price, the other will tell me 'we can't sell them'.

It should be either 'you CAN sell them 100% of the time at ALL the stores' or you CAN'T sell them under ANY circumstances at the penny price.
Should be, but ain't. Its YMMV and always has been. Anyway, we've got the 1st Monday of the month coming up, which may mean a fresh batch of penny guides at Best Buy. There's still some stuff they haven't pennied out yet thats been lurking there since Oct/Nov...that last Mortal Kombat guide, some Xbox 360 launch guides like Condemned perhaps, and the ever popular "will it ever be clearanced?" Halo 2. Any others that might be good candidates?
Floormat, the Gran Turismo 4 and Half Life 2 hardcover books are also pennied out at EB now. And Stubbs the Zombie is listed as .99 at some EBs.
not stubbs but the other to are on the new list

Floormat, you just received my vote for 2006 CAG Of The Year.
What about the URU(pc) guide, Dino? Or the Need for Speed Most Wanted one?
Who knows...there's no predicting what BB will do...sometimes they will penny out a guide after its only been out a few months, sometimes they just sit there on the shelves gathering dust. (I think there's STILL a full priced Full Spectrum Warrior guide at my BB). Based on past form, anything that's been on the shelves for about four months is a good candidate for the chop.

Wow... that's just... wow!

Also, another one that's not on there is Pac-Man World 3.

Anyways, thank you very much for the list. I think the next thing that needs to be done with it is for the ones that are cut off to be filled in as much as possible. Floormat, if you send me a file with all those in them, I can start filling in a bunch of them and then give it back to you to repost it. It'll take me a while, but I'd be able to get probably 50% of them done no problem. The ones that I wouldn't be able to do are the ones that have the same name like 3-10 times (due to different publishers, #'s 1-4, etc.).

there is no file per say. I was given a print out and i scanned them and pasted them together. Your cutting and pasting them would yield the same result. i'll try to get to them but that would be from interperting the list as well as the time of processing that many titles. I already spent hours getting it into the system. Bleh. some time soon unless you beat me to it. good luck.
