07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. Man, I'm confused. Have any new guides been pennied out by EB/GS recently? It seems like posts about new penny/cheap guides are scattered, and rather vague lately. floormat's was fairly clear, so I appreciate that. If someone has just an up-to-date list of guides pennied out in the last month until the present, it would be awesome.

Hopefully we'll have one of those shortly. I'm trying to find the time to get the last few drops into the master list, and start a new thread.

I called BestBuy for the heck of it to get my in-store pickup order turned into a free shipping order since i got the "out of stock" email.
It will probably never show up, but it was worth hearing the confused voice on the end of the line(all the way in India) when they saw the order total, 8 cents.

I would imagine that the $5 off all strategy guides was an attempt to clear stock of a large number of guides, and then to penny out all the remaining ones they wanted to get rid of but didn't sell.

Also, I was still working at GS after the last B2G1F ended, and the day after it ended there were massive numbers of price drops. I would think that there will be more than a few strategy guides on that list this time around.

I managed to pick up three copies of the FFIV guide at Best Buy today. There were still a handful left at the store near Crossroads, but they didn't have any of the other penny guides.

I would gladly trade a FF guide for a Dragon Quest VIII guide. PM if your interested.

I hit two EBs and two GSs. The first EB let me have a Halo 2 guide without a blink. The second had none in stock. The first GS wouldn't let me have a guides since the computer didn't know how to handle a -0.01 sale. The second price adjusted the guides to $5.00 from $4.99 so they would ring up as $0.00. Walked out with two copies. They had at least 15 more in stock.

I've had ZERO luck with the local BBs. I hate them all.

I just scored 2 Halo 2 guides at gamestop, they only charged the TAX of them, for a total of 47 cents each, not bad ...

I had a crap experience with an EB that I finally found had some guides that would be 'free' after the discount in stock.

I saw 3-4 copies of the Spartan Total Warrior guide, which pennied out a while back at GS/EB/BB. But, I have enough of those from a haul at a BB when I was 'hoarding' penny guides, so I didn't bother to pick them up.

Next, I saw 2-3 copies of the Stubbs the Zombie guide, which won't even come up when scanned at the register. They usually have to manually enter in a code from the usual sticker that GS puts on the front cover of the guides with the price. Then, they come up as 'generic guide' for .99. These didn't have ANY of the price stickers.

I also saw single copies of the Halo 2, Star Wars Republic Commando and Red Dead Revolver guides.

The clerk out and out refused to sell me the Stubbs guide(s) because they wouldn't come up in the system, he claimed the Halo 2 guide was $4.99 after the rebate(lie), he said the SW:RC guide was 'full price' and Red Dead Revolver also didn't come up in the system, though I'm not sure about the RDR guide, since I've never seen it on the pennied out guide list from EB/GS.

So, all in all, I walked out with 0 guides, since I wasn't even willing to pay the $4.99 AFTER $5.00 discount for the Halo 2 guide. And moreover, I knew he was lying about the Star Wars one, as I had already snagged a personal copy of this at an EB down the line.

So, for anyone who wants to make the trek to Wilkes-Barre, PA, there are numerous guides that SHOULD come up as .01 and/or free during this sale.

Happy Hunting, but just hope you don't get the old bearded liar I dealt with last night.

EDIT:

This is the EB at the Wyoming Valley Mall, though if you go to the Gamestop nearer Panera Bread off Mundy Street, there are copies of Drakengard 2's guide that you can grab for $4.99 after the discount, as well as copies of the True Crime:NYC guide, which will come up as $2.99 after discount as well.

Hope this helps anyone looking for those guides or just to pad a personal collection.

So I went to Best Buy today to check and see if there were any guides left from the latest drop.

I picked up 1 copy of Gun and another of GTA Liberty City.

I took both up to the front to double check and Gun rang up .01 while GTA 15.99.

But the employee was a little confused about Gun and made a call to the media department asking questions. Finally see said she didn't know why it came up .01 and I told her thanks and I will continue to shop.

I went back to the area about to go check on the 5 other Gun guides that were still there when an employee of Best Buy said to me, "Got luckly with the Gun guides?" Then asked if there were any left(my mistake). I said "Ya, about 5 more or there".

So about 30 seconds later I see him walk over and take all the Gun guides that were left and keep them for himself.

So I made out of the store with just 1 guide(can't really complain though) but I would rather a regular person like me or someone else have a chance at the guides instead of an employee.

I think its BS that he did it pretty much right in front of me.

Unless you saw him buy them, chances are he took them off the shelf so no one else could buy them like he should have done four days ago.

ya, he might have done that but at this Best Buy I have gotten guides 4 months later after they were dropped. I would think he would know they were a penny and not wait for an employee to call down asking if they truely are.

I thought Best Buy was run differently than Toys R US and EB/GameStop?

I got pretty lucky with my DQ8 guide, too. There weren't any in the guides section, but I happened to wander over by the PC games, and there was a near-mint copy of the DQ8 guide down on the bottom shelf. It was surrounded by a halo of light, and I think I heard some angels singing when I spotted it.

Came back the next day to participate in the B2G1 free sale to find them all taken off the shelves...haha.

Went to my EB...but my EB blows ass. It seems like they're uninformed. They didn't even know a B2G1 sale was supposed to be going on, and this was near the end of the sale, mind you. They had tons of Halo 2's/HL2s, but when I tried to get $5 off they didn't know about it.

I hate my town's EB.

I asked my one friend who was near her local Best Buy yesterday to grab me a couple copies of the 'limited edition' Hulk #1 comic that they were supposed to give out to people buying the Hulk: UD game, but sadly, within the last couple days they 'sold out'.

It's weird too, because they must've had them there since the game came out last fall or so and they were just sitting there last week when I found my personal copy of the DQVIII guide.

She also met the employee who usually hoards the penny guides at that store and tosses em up on Ebay. This is the same person I had to have her buy a copy of the Warriors guide from from EBay when I couldn't find any copies locally.

I guess she stopped grabbing the guides to EBay anymore though, as some CAGer on this board mentioned going in and finding 35+ guides(and must've been the person who the clerk I spoke with last week mentioned about 'cleaning them out').

Ahhhh well, just thought I'd mention that that Hulk #1 reprint is also .01, in case anyone wants to grab a copy or three.

'Stale' magazines ring up as .01 at Gamestop. I got a Nintendo Power from January for .01, but one from April rang up full price. So, I guess the cutoff is somewhere around 3 or 4 months old.

I think Romancing SaGa is newnly pennyed, as it was still $15.99 in GameStop last week I checked... but man, today is a truely happy day for me, I almost wanted to cried when the cashier told me BOTH SSS/RTC and RSaGa are penny guides!!! I also asked about Star Ocean: Till the end of Time, but that was still $15.99, so I told the dude, I'll just take the two penny guides, thank you. Handed him a buck and got 98c back...

Actually, Romancing Saga was pennied at EB/GS in April, but congrats on your pick-ups. The only reason I started collecting guides was because most were a penny or free.
