07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. I've checked there plenty of times, and they usually never have any of the pennied guides... I gave up looking a while ago, but I guess I can make a stop by today to see what they have.

None of the new drops at my BB today. I have a feeling they're pulling them, just doing a crappy job, since there are still a handful of Metal Gear Acid guides sitting around.
 
I checked out EBGames and Gamestop today I did not find any penny guides. I have not found one penny guide yet. Is the Prima God of War guide a penny at EBGames? I saw it but I did not ask.

It was only the LE guide that was pennied, I believe.

I got lucky, a local Gamestop had pulled the regular Xenosaga 2 guides (I assume on accident) so I got one that way. I didn't even realize it wasn't a penny until after I got home.
 
I grabbed a few guides from EB games tonight not listed I believe. SSX On Tour, The Punisher, and a couple of others that I'll have to edit this post later for as I cannot recall them at the moment. Apologies if these were mentioned before. :)

Only just saw this post... man, that explains why I can never get any penny guides from any of the BB "near" me, this dude's warehouse (South El Monte, CA) is right in the middle of ALL the BB I can possiblly reach (before the gas costs far far out weight the buzz of getting a penny guide)...

EB / BB / TRU aren't supposed to sell penny guides anyways, so I'm not sure how this would make publishers ask the companies to stop selling them. If anything, it would just make the publishers pissed at the companies, but if every store was doing its job correctly we would NEVER find a penny guide.

Nah, that's ok, I didn't really want any of those guides though, only really wanted them so I have something to trade for other guides.

But I did go to Best Buy today, and they did have a pretty big pile of NFS MW and DOA4 guides... so I took two of each, and a movie was going to buy anyway. So I got to the register... and the girl was a little confused why they scanned for a penny, so she called someone over. Well this smartass that comes over says "you know why these sell for a penny? It's because they're garbage. They're going in the trash." Well, let me have a copy if you're going to throw them away idiot. I understand that they're not really supposed to sell you them, but if I legitimately want to buy them, what are you going to do, say I can't buy it. That said, I didn't buy the movie either because I was pissed off. They could honestly go fuck themselves.

Now I know why I hate best buy. Circuit city generally aren't asses about it, there's more than once where I got a pennied game or guide from circuit city, and they didn't care. Oh well, the guides were for nothing I really wanted.

I would complain just based on his attitude. Its one thing if he said they can't sell because blah blah blah have to return covers to publisher blah blah. But its another to say "No, you cant have it because its going in our dumpster".
Of course, this is all regardless of the fact you picked up an item from the store floor and brought it up to the register where it rang up for a price in their system.

whenever you get pennied guides from CC please post that info here as neocisco is the only other person I can recall on here who ever gets any penny guides from CC.
 
Getting penny guide from some places is definitely an art form... My local GS for instance, I went in there before to try to get penny guide, they would always tell (lie) me that it's at $16.99... today, I was asked by a friend to buy him a new game, and I grabed FFIV guide just to test them out... I got the guide for free! :bouncy:

Hmm... they have a few more guides that I want... guess I need to buy more games there... :headache:
 
I found Black, NFS, and DOA4 at BB tonight. I'll trade them for guides I need for games I own...mostly looking for Nintendo guides but a few PS2.

Punisher has been pennied for a while now, I grabbed my copy from the EB at the Stroud Mall a while back. This was back before they did the schizo thing I've noticed many EB/GS stores doing lately. That being, removing the guide shelf or shelves COMPLETELY for about a week or so, then sporadically bringing them back.

There WERE multiples of Punisher, Killzone and a number of older guides at this particular EB, till they did that 'disappearing act' with the shelves for the guides.

And SSX On Tour was one of the .99 reduced price guides, much like Stubbs The Zombie was. However, last time I had a copy of Stubbs PC'd, it didn't even come up in the system.

The only way to get the .99 guides, if they don't scan up to that price, is by having the clerk manually enter the number under the price on the front of the guide(on the price sticker). That will cause it to come up as a generic guide.
 
Anyone have a list of the last 3 months worth of EB/GS drops? I saw a bunch of older guides at two different GS stores tonight...I'm sure at least a few of them are pennied.
 
Anyone have an extra DOA4 guide they'd like to sell me? I couldn't find one as I guess all the stores in my area are pulling their guides now. I also have a few older guides on my trade list.

I'm looking for the F.E.A.R., Medal of Honor Pacific Assault, Doom 3 (PC), God of War w/DVD and Quake 4 (PC) guides. Anyone have them for sale?
 
Okay, so I was too sick to go out the first day these new guides were pennied, and now it's too late for me to make the absurd trip out to all the other "local" Best Buys.. so if anyone picked up extra copies of any of these three recent guides (DoA4, NFS:MW, or BLACK) please check my list - I have some guides from the last pennying at Best Buy for trade, or I could pay for them, just let me know how much.

The OP really needs to update the first post. That or just start a new thread. It is just frustratingly inconvenient to go through page after page just to find out what is pennied at Best Buy.

Also, any word on what the next batch of pennied guides will be at EB or GameStop? Thank you.

As I've said in my other recent posts on this thread, I really think alot of EB/GS stores will be pennying their old version Liberty City Stories guides real soon. Many of my local EB/GS stores have the PSP only version still sitting on their shelves.

I needed to find where the kangaroo court is that I have to go to in mid July in NY for my hearing on the speeding ticket I got(first one in 15 yrs of driving and I get it OUTTA state, figures).

So, I was up in the lovely(read:abysmally backwards and small time) town of Bethel and found the court. Then, while up that way, I figured I'd take my friend who came with me(in her car) up to Middletown to check the Best Buy there.

I bumped into fellow CAGer ShiningSlade, who was up there looking for a copy of Black's guide, to no avail.

Was cool to meet yet another CAGer on a mission for some of the deals listed on this site.

We both scored a copy of the NFS guide and a couple of the DOA 4 ones, but they had none of the others.

The store there is pretty destitute of guides anymore, well especially since I cleaned them out in my guide hoarding days. LOL

floormat isn't going to do the next penny guide thread, I am. And it's something I'm working on, as time allows. It's partially done, and I hope to have it done soon.

So, as it stands right now, we don't need any more comments of "can the OP update the first post". The replacement will get done when time allows.
 
How hard is it to just skim through some pages and see what guides people are talking about, anyways?

I know there is always one main post where someone lists all the guides that are pennied in the recent drop, like "Hey guys these are pennied hurry and get them!"

You see, this job needs to be given to some one with no life so it's always updated within 5 seconds of a drop. Some one that reads this board 100 times a day and has nothing better to do.

Still missing some EB/GS and BB drops...and possible some GC drops. I know there was a big BB drop that had Dragon Quest VIII and some other stuff that's not on the first page.

I went to a Target, a BB, an EB, and 2 GSs in the weekend and managed to grab a total of 7 penny guides!!! :bouncy: :bouncy: :bouncy: Skip to the bottom of message for trade list if you dont care for the story.

First was Target, I grab a copy of each guide they had and scanned them for price, only one came back as $0.00 -- Half Life 2... took it to the cashier got refused since it's $0.00... then the manager made up a price of $6.50 so I gave it up... I think had I brought something else with the guide I might have been able to get away with it... will report back later once I tried...

BB -- freaken awesome trip, got 4 guides: NFS:MW, QUAKE4, GUN, and MK:SM. I must have got the best cashier ever, she scanned them and said "that'll be 4 cents, thank you."! :bouncy: Too bad I failed to find DQ8 or SO3

GS 1 -- Found another copy of FFIV and AC:Nexus -- I asked them to scanned AC first as I werent 100% sure if it's penney, they scanned it, came up penny and they said hey lucky you... but then they scanned FFIV as well and quickly changed their mind saying they cannot give them to me... that they had to send them back to the pub. hmmm..... I told them to just sell me the AC:N guide... after a few minutes, one of the dude gave me BOTH for free :bouncy: :bouncy:

GS 2 -- Found The Warriors -- they semi-bastard cashier scanned it, saw it was a penny guide, about to hand it to me but then decided that he had to cut off the freaken entire front cover before giving it to me!!! What a bastard!!! Hmmmm..... it was a very good condition copy too!!! What a freaken waste... I know I still got it for free, but man, that kind of action just saddens me...

Is it strange that I can't bring myself to pay a penny for a 50 Cent Bulletproof guide?

I look at it everytime I go to BB, and can't seem to muster the interest to pay a penny for it.

No it's not strange. If I don't want a guide then sometimes I won't bother, but you could try to use it as trade bait.
