CAGiversary!

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2
Wait....you can actually buy guides for a penny? I never noticed at any stores. Why do they do this? To get rid of it? even then, wouldn't a penny be a little low?
They're supposed to throw them out/send them back. I think the penny is there as a place holder and to remind them that it has to go.

Not a penny but MicroCenter has red tagged clearance guides 2.99 or less. Don't know all of the titles but I picked up a TimeSpliter 2, Defender, Gunvalkyrie and Contra Shattered.

I got them at 1/2 price Books. A few months ago I found an new Xenogears guide for $5.
whered you get those guides from spamfree?

Not a penny but MicroCenter has red tagged clearance guides 2.99 or less. Don't know all of the titles but I picked up a TimeSpliter 2, Defender, Gunvalkyrie and Contra Shattered.
Yea i stopped by the other week and got a couple for .99 cents or so. If i remember correctly, it was a Blinx : time sweeper, Evolution worlds, and Shenmue II
I got them at 1/2 price Books. A few months ago I found an new Xenogears guide for $5.
Seems like everyone here gets awesome finds at that place and the nearest one to me is about 150 miles away in Indy.

Anyone here know if these price cuts tend to spread accross other stores, too? Because I couldn't find any guides in the stores mentioned, that I want, but Hastings has a ton of good ones.

This thread is now officially filled with newbies asking the same redundant questions. Can we get this back on track and only list newly pennied guides? Thank you.
Anyone here know if these price cuts tend to spread accross other stores, too? Because I couldn't find any guides in the stores mentioned, that I want, but Hastings has a ton of good ones.
Why even mention Hastings, they never penny out guides. You might be lucky to score a clearenced one or a used one someone traded in. My hastings has 2 brand new FFVII guides (Brady) for $14.99. Hastings has some deals every once in a while, but they're like K-Mart, Media Play, etc. They think they can still get top dollar for old shit.

Granted there are people who don't mind spending $14.99 for a guide, but for an item that is almost 10 years old is upsurd. Sure I like Hastings and am glad that if I need to get a hard to find item they might have it, but overall they have some outrageous prices.

Anyone know if these .01 price cuts tend to spread to other stores, or if it's prettymuch just the ones mentioned? I couldn't find anything worth buying at EB, CC, or BB, but there seemed to be alot of nice ones at Hastings?
If you're paying attention when they ring them up, they should show up on the little card swiper that they have. If it shows .01 and they try to price adjust it, just tell them "No I want it for a penny if it's ringing up that way." They really can't do anything about it. If it's on their Salesfloor then they have to sell it to you. If they deny you that would be poor customer service and they could lose customers that way. I also think that they have to sell it if it's on the salesfloor. I've boldly walked up to the counter with literally 30 guides before and they always give me the same response "Wow are you serious? and Catching up on some reading huh?" I just say yup if they are the right price! lol
lol if you walked in my store with that attitude i'd laugh and kick you out for being a retard. They don't have to mark alter anything if the price tag says $15.99 or whatever, they can charge that and technically there is nothing you can do about it but complain, but the DM will back the employee.

Now why do you have to go and call me a retard? You'd have no right to kick me out because I'd have done nothing wrong, especially if I was purchasing something else. And I also believe the DM would back the customer. A golden retail rule is "The customer's always right." At least it was when I worked retail.
I've never had an attitude about it. And I have not had any problems with stores yet about giving them to me. I'm actually a very easygoing nice guy. But if a store (any) has something for sale on their salesfloor and it rings up at .01 then they really do have to sell it at the price it rings up. Regardless what it's marked at, if it's in the system at a different price then that should be the price it's sold at. Now if stores were on top of these things like they're supposed to be then they don't even have to worry about it.;)
I actually just walked out of an EB last night with over 60 penny guides. Some stores are just either too busy or too lazy and don't care. Among those guides were older ones not even in the system anymore like Sniper Elite, Ys, Haunting Ground, etc. I love stores like that!:bouncy:

You'd have no right to kick me out because I'd have done nothing wrong, especially if I was purchasing something else.

Actually, the right to refuse service gives them the right to kick you out.
But if a store (any) has something for sale on their salesfloor and it rings up at .01 then they really do have to sell it at the price it rings up.
The right to refuse service also allows them the right to not sell you the guide at all.

^Refusing service is not very good customer service or good for the business either. And I meant purchasing other stuff besides guides. Do you think they'd refuse service if I was purchasing a $50 game? I think not. Also, why would a store kick someone out if they'd done nothing wrong? I take up some guides to buy and they ring up at .01, is that my fault? Can't people just contribute to this site and not criticize everything? Geez:bomb:

Remember I called Customer Service. I was told they could not raise the price. So, if it rings up for a penny, they cannot raise it to the MSRG. They can refuse to sell it but not raise the price. If they could do that what would stop them from saying "Oh this my last copy of ____, I'll sell it to you $20 more." To me, a sell is a sell. At stores that pull that, I just don't go back. I also pass it along to other friends...sort of a boycott.

I said that earlier.

They can go down or not sell it to you, but cannot legally change the price that it rings up at - sticker or no.

The sticker is irrelevant, because it's not an advertised price.

The SKU dictates the price, and that information is kept in the company database.

Like I said - you may not get the guide for a penny, but they cannot legally charge anything other than what the price rings up in the computer.

On a side note, today I picked up 3 extra "The Outfit" guides for XBOX 360, and 3 extra "Gun" guides - all for $.08.

The cashier thought it was hysterical.

How can you say what they can or can't legally do when all 50 states have different laws on these things? There's no federal law that covers this.

I agree. While many people cite laws, no one ever actually names the legal code that backs them up. To the average retail worker I imagine saying that "it's the law" would just make them refuse you entirely.

^Refusing service is not very good customer service or good for the business either. And I meant purchasing other stuff besides guides. Do you think they'd refuse service if I was purchasing a $50 game? I think not. Also, why would a store kick someone out if they'd done nothing wrong?
This has always been a YMMV, and we're simply giving reasons why and how people do not get penny guides. People also unfairly attack retail workers (many of which contribute regularly to CAG). You probably won't win over the average retail worker by telling him that selling you a guide for a penny makes for good business. Even if you did purchase a $50 game with a guide, it's still YMMV as other CAGs have been refused guides even after buying MVP membership and several games. Some retail workers are also told to not sell penny guides by their managers, and this often will be a higher priority to them than making a sale. Some CAGs get obviously pissed when they're denied their penny guides. This can disrupt business and affect other customers.

Can't people just contribute to this site and not criticize everything?
If you noticed, no one criticizes tips that users post about improving your chances to get penny guides.

I also pass it along to other friends...sort of a boycott.
Getting pissed or boycotting over a penny guide won't make them regret selling you the guide. If they have a good deal, they know you'll be back regardless. If you organized a real boycott, like they denied you service because of your race or religion, then they might think it over.

Tell you what - call your Better Business Bureau, and they'll give you the lowdown.

I did, that's why I posted what I posted.

I called them and they said the state of Indiana has no law remotely like that. Call them yourself: (317) 488-2222

I went into EB Games, today, and tried to buy a Zelda:4S, which is on the list as .01, and was on sale for $9.99.
Apparantly, Nintendo releases "Players Choice" version of their guides, which aren't affected by the same price cuts as their predecessors.

Yeah, if you had scrolled back a page or two, you would've seen a similar post.

re updated post on master list

"Gamestop/EB Games .01 3-31-06 replaces all old EB and GS thread from this day forward

Gamestop/EB Games .01 - .02 unless otherwise noted printed from a converted system on 3-30-06"

it now inlcudes everything from the original scan to help prevent confusion. Obviously some of the guides have dropped since then but I just wanted to make sure that the list was complete so there were no more xenosaga II vs xenosaga II signature series mix ups. I am sure there still will be but hopefully less now. As always good luck n keep posting.

Sims 2 and a couple of other guides aren't showing on BB's website anymore. I know Sims 2 was Sold Out, but does that mean its a penny yet?
Anyone else recognize any other guides that aren't there anymore?

Actually, there's a bunch that haven't been on the site for a while and still aren't pennied out. My Best Buy has copies of a bunch of guides that're just holding on. Though, on a weird note, both of my local BB's had a shitton of Halo 2 guides and now POOF, ALL gone.

Weird, as I know that didn't drop and I seriously doubt that after months and months of it sitting on the shelves that it suddenly flew off there in mass quantities.

Hell, up till about a month ago, my one Best Buy had 2-3 copies of Star Wars Clone Wars guide, clearance priced at $2.99. They were there for over a year when I first spotted them.

And really, I think the PC version Quake IV guide is still on the shelves at my local BB too and it has not yet dropped to .01.

So, sadly, while the 'if it drops from the site, it must be pennied out' thing works sometime, it's not always an accurate way to determine which guides dropped.

Unfortunately not all gamecrazy's penny out their guides at the same time. I have 4 gamecrazies around me. 2 of them pull them the same day (or earlier) as they are posted here. The other 2 still have them out. However, when I take any to the front at those two, they ring up full price (without any overrides). The guides will continue to be out for almost another week and then they'll magically disappear. Since all 4 stores are in the same region, I don't know how it is organized in order to determine which store does it when, but it would be interesting to find out.

Best Buy .01

Dragon Quest VIII
Final Fantasy VI Advance GBA
GTA Liberty City Stories PSP
Gun
Mario & Luigi partners in time DS
Metal Gear Acid 2
Perfect Dark Zero
SOCOM III
The Outfit

Unless I grabbed the wrong guide or something GTA Liberty City guide rang up for 14.99 for me.

Yeah, you grabbed the version that's for PS2 and PSP. They had an original version that was just for the PSP.

I talked with a Gamecrazy manager the other day. He said it was totally up to him when he pulls the guides and pennies them out. I guess he has to enter some info in the system and it is a real pain according to him. He was cool about it and showed me the drawer full of guides he was going to penny out. So it sounds like it is at the Manager's discretion as to what they penny out.

I went to a GC and found:
Bards Tale x3
Madden '06 x8
Burnout Revenge x3
Blackhawk Down x4
PM if you want to trade for any of them, Thanks.

Yeap. Black ones are for PSP and are .01; white guides are PSP/PS2 and are $14.99.

I went there on the last guide drop and started talking to the Manager. He was surprised I had the list about an hour after he got it. This time I went in and he had pulled them the day before and was saving them for me cause he figured I'd be in, really surprised me. I bought a couple of games and a Makai Kingdom guide off of him.

I'm working at Best Buy, and as of 7:00 AM Tuesday the 29th, the following guides dropped to a penny.

X-Men #
Star Wars Battlefront 2
TC Advanced Warfighter
The Sims 2
Metroid Prime Hunters

Enjoy.
