FYI, REC did make a stateside appearance as Quarantine. I only saw the original, so I can't really compare.
Quarantine was pretty bad. I made the mistake of seeing that before the original. In fact I still haven't gotten around to seeing it.

A lot of great movies have been mentioned, but I'm surprised anyone hasn't said Hellraiser. No Pinhead and Cenobite fans here? :p

Haha, that was my movie of the night last night. Tonight it's Bloody Reunion, which I think is a pretty decent modern Korean slasher film.

As for Hellraiser, I really am disappointed Barker gave up directing after Lord of Illusions. I've seen a lot of people demanding he comes back to direct Imajica, which I think would be awesome...
Audition
Trick r' Treat
Shaun of the Dead
Hatchet
Dead and Breakfast
The Thing
Re-Animator
The Mist

and my staple for the Halloween season
Freddy v. Jason
Oh fuck yes to Hatchet! The kills in that movie were fun as hell to watch with group of friends.

Most of my favorites have been mentioned--The Exorcist, The Shining, the original TCM (hell, all the TCMs)--but I also have to give a recommendation to May, if any of you haven't seen it. I love that movie.

Ha, finally, someone else who has seen May! That movie is great. Really started to creep me out toward the end.

Another fun little horror indie film is Splinter. Anyone ever see that one? A bit low budget, but I enjoyed it.

I am planning to watch 28 Days Later this Halloween. But my staple since I was a kid is not even a horror movie per se. It give me the serious creeps without horror which is nice, its called Night of the Hunter. Seriously the killer near the end of the movie is a fang away from being a demon.
I probably didnt understand it, you're right. Probably because I never really cared for Halloween for 2 reasons. 1, I get scared every day by the slightest things because i'm very jumpy & my nerves are shot to hell. 2, Any time I want candy, I go buy it.
Yeah - watch who wears masks and who doesn't in Trick r' Treat - it's deeper then it first appears.

Trick r Treat is something I really need to pick up this October. Truly an amazing movie for any fans of horror or the holiday itself.
That's sad. I think a lot of the people take it at face value and don't see the meaning behind it.

If you hated Sam, and thought he was dumb, he was meant to be the personified spirit of Halloween punishing people for not sticking to tradition. I love that.

Give it another go.
I understood the whole concept behind Sam being the spirit of Halloween and all, it's just that the movie was far from scary. Sam looks cool, but that was about it. The only saving grace for that movie was Anna Paquin, man she's freaking hot, if she had been nude that movie would have been better.

Couple of others shows to add to the list if not already here,

Hellraiser 1 and 2
Candyman
Session 9
Shrooms (thought this one would suck was kinda decent, bout as good as Trick R Treat)

I think I am going to watch these this year.
Trick R Treat
The Mist
Dawn of the Dead

I enjoyed shrooms and trick r treat but the latter is waaaay better.

For me, its pretty much any of the Stephen King movies. My favorites are The Shining, Pet Cemetery, and Christine. Those never get old.

Besides Blood Diner and others mentioned......

Demons 1 & 2, Don't Answer the Phone, The Gates of Hell (City of the Living Dead), The House of the Devil, My Boyfriend's Back, Demonic Toys, Puppet Master 4-5 (or any ;)), Dolls, Pumpkinhead, Silent Night Deadly Night 1 & 5 (or any ), Triloquist, Leprechaun, Rumpelstiltskin, April Fools Day (original), The People Under the Stairs, Silver Bullet, Sleepaway Camp........:bouncy:

Also recommend people checking out Noroi: The Curse great mockumentary type film. From Japan, the best I'd say....

Oh man, how can I forget Pet Sematary! That old man was the best :).
Stay very very far away from the sequel. John Connor is in it and the whole thing is so retarded you want to kill yourself.

Gigli :D

In all seriousness, the only one I remember that was freaky for me was Pet Sematary. Granted, A) I don't watch a lot of horror flicks and B) it has been a while since I saw it.

Everyone's Halloween should also include Gremlins. Obviously not scary but a fun ride.

No one mentioned Trolls? j/k

Trying to find this B Flick from the 80's I believed it was called Spookies. All i could remmeber is that these teens go to a house (stereotypical 80's) and one person finds an Ouija board and plays with it, then all the stuff goes crazy. It's kind of like a knockoff House(1986).

EDIT: I feel smart searched on IMDB, and BAM it shows up. Need to find a copy

Silly, Gremlins is a Christmas Movie.

Ahh I love Halloween and horror movies. I try to mix it up every year so I don't have a specific one I always watch.

I doubt I'll be able to watch them all but I have a bunch favorites lined up.

The Prowler
The Crazies
High Tension
Dawn of the Dead
Chopping Mall
Let the Right One In
[REC]
Undead
Shaun of the Dead
The Ruins
All the Boys Love Mandy Lane
Tokyo Gore Police
Timecrimes
Martyrs
Inside
The Descent
Sleepaway Camp
A Tale of Two Sisters
Stacy
Shutter
Cold Prey
Fascination
Army of Darkness
The Stuff

Is The Mist that shitty movie based on the Stephen King book with the crazy spider things? If so, that movie made no sense. The only redeeming quality it had was the epicly awesome kills it had.

I made the mistake of reading about that Slender Man stuff and watching one of the videos posted on here. Gave me a little trouble sleeping for a few nights. Guess I'm a wimp.

But then I learned nothing is more terrfying than when both kids wake up before 6:30.

Thanks to this thread I'm hooked on The Slender Man stuff AND I'm devoting the entire month of October to Horror Movies / Games.

I'm making sure I watch:

Dawn of the Dead BOTH versions. The original is one of my favorite childhood movies of all time (next to jurrasic park) and I liked the remake and appreciated it for what it was (basically a completely different film).

Evil Dead Trilogy

Ring 1 & 2. Yeah part 2 was meh, but I haven't seen it since it was in theatres, so I'm overdue for another look.

And I want to watch as many obscure movies as you people can throw at me :)

Yes, but I LOVED that movie.

The characters were interesting (especially the crazy religious lady), the thrills were good, and the ending was awesome and unexpected.

Personally, I think most good horror movies make no sense. It's not about why it's happening, it's about what is happening.

I feel like once you know what's going on and can attach a human face/reason to the action, the scares are mostly gone. (Obviously, there are a few exceptions).
Hahahaha Chopping Mall fuck yeah! Definitely gotta add that to my pile of Halloween movies.
where shopping will cost you an arm and a leg lol. i loved that movie its horrible but in a good way. man i need to get my hands on the puppet master series the first 3 are classics.

The last scene in May is phenomenal.

And I agree, Splinter was surprisingly awesome. Low budget but really well done.

Anyone ever seen Motel Hell? That's a fun (if not actually good) one.

Return of the Living Dead is necessary god damn viewing, folks.

After that I'd go for the ol' John Carpenter The Thing/Prince of Darkness/In the Mouth of Madness. The Thing is the best known of the bunch, but has probably aged the worst and is ultimately the least scary. Prince of Darkness has some pretty weak damn protagonists, but makes up for it in other ways. Mouth of Madness is just plain badass.

I just watched "Splice". While I wouldn't really consider it horror, it was a very good science fiction drama/thriller. It was smart hollywood science (believable, but not super real. Think Jurassic Park. ), and the characters were developed really well. The pace was also superb. And go into it with an open mind. You can tell it was made with the idea in mind that people would talk about it and actually use a little intellect.

If you want to watch something new, give it a shot. It's definitely not for everybody, though.

Now to go figure out why everyone is so obsessed with "The Human Centipede".

No way! I still love that movie and the effects still look great. I'll take that over CG any day.

ive been thinking about seeing splice since it came out but wasnt sure if itd be worth it but from what you described it may be worth a view. but avoid human centipede its complete shit and not worth seeing. aside from some chick nudity theres nothing worth seeing there.

QFT

Especially now in HD....sadly someday kids are gonna look at this movie and go "So did everyone dress like that in the 80's" and I'm going to go "Yes, yes we did".

After that I'd go for the ol' John Carpenter The Thing/Prince of Darkness/In the Mouth of Madness. Sorry, here is where I need to throw you to the Lions. The Thing is hardly 'the least scary'.....the entire movie is one long suspenseful buildup, never knowing where the thing is....towards the end when its huge and on the attack..come ON man. In High Def that movie still holds up insanely well.

Prince of Darkness is another killer, you are right...weak in some areas, but very cool in others..BUT you have to love Carpenter films (set at night, plodding synth soundtrack, usually take place in confined areas). especially like the whole "messages from the future being beamed back in time" spin, like a science + religion angle on this flick that isn't usually done.

I'd also like to recommend: Halloween 3, Season of the Witch and THe Fog......both are creepy Carpenter Flicks that must be watched around this time of year....hell, throw in Escape From New York. No Horror element, but again...shot entirely at night, creepy soundtrack.....pretend the crazies are zombies and boom, instant horror flick! :D

I don't really have a "watch every year" movie, but any one of these would be good if I did:

Nightmare Before Christmas
28 Days Later
Any of the Evil Dead series
Shaun of the Dead

On The Thing: I didn't say it was bad or not worth watching. Just that it had aged the worst. The scene that was supposed to be the big "Oh shit!" in Mouth of Madness has the same problem.
where shopping will cost you an arm and a leg lol. i loved that movie its horrible but in a good way. man i need to get my hands on the puppet master series the first 3 are classics.
Hell yeah! I'm glad some of you guys know Chopping Mall. Such a fun flick.

I nearly flipped my lid when they finally put the Puppet Master series on DVD. 2 is still my favorite. Torch was awesome.
The last scene in May is phenomenal.

May was amazing. Splinter had a strong concept but the husband nearly ruined it for me. Too many typical horror movie mistakes. I wish they did the original screenplay, it was much smarter and overall would have been a better film. I still like it, it just could have been better.

I love Motel Hell. If you or anyone else here is interested, for the past year or so I've been doing a weekly show where I focus on lesser known movies from the 70s-90s and talk a little about the movie's history and such. I usually do horror movies but I branch out into other genres like sci-fi, action and comedy. Anyway, this past week I did Motel Hell. I throw in a few jokes here and there to keep things interesting. The episodes usually run like 7-10 minutes.

Ok, plug over. If you want check it out. It's called Good Bad Flicks.

Return of the Living Dead is one of the all time best zombie flicks. Still holds up. Hell yes Linnea Quigley.

The Thing not scary? Gotta disagree with you on that one.

Amen. Tom Savini, Stan Winston and Phil Tippett all have done amazing make up and FX that put CGI to shame.

I have Splice but haven't watched it yet. I have to disagree with you on Human Centipede, I thought it was fascinating. Look beyond all the hype and it is an original and disturbing movie. The movie was not about the gore, of which there was very little. It relied more on the concept being so far out there that a you couldn't feel anything but sympathy for these poor folks that were stuck in a situation beyond anyone's worst nightmare. The doctor was outstanding and really helped to "sell" it...for me at least.

I usually watch Hocus Pocus atleast once just to keep the tradition going and this year I ordered Are You Afraid Of The Dark Season 1 and I'm going to watch it with my younger cousins after they are done getting candy.

Took out most of your post

But honestly, I think even 25 years later, Day of the Dead has some of the best practical effects that still hold up. Coincidentally enough, Day is also my favorite of the series. Night and Dawn both are great for their time, and still wonderful, but I do enjoy 80s films, and Day pretty much seeps with 80s awesomeness. Plus, Rhodes is completely badass.

day has the bigger sense of how overwhelming the zombie plague is and i still want to see it remade the way romero intended but i like dawn because well who the fuck wouldnt love to live in a mall but the lack of chicks would suck. and in the end stuck in the all they had some level of hope to survive.

im gonna start my movie viewing today ( dawn, dawn 2004, day of the dead, dead snow, zombieland, zombie 1979, night of the demons, phantasm 1&2, brain dead, cemetery man , night of the comet, 28 days & weeks later, trick r treat, the entity, waxwork 1 & 2, howling 1, something wicked this way comes and demon knight).
