20% off general merchandise at Meijer is back 8/10-8/11 (with Meijer CC)

not worth signing up for a CC for.

but much better than the deal I was offered at Subway today-- sign up for a visa, get a free 6" sub!! pft, and of course, there was a bunch of 18 year olds there getting in on the hot deal

Apossum, if you are a new card member you get an extra 10% off of your first purchase which you would be able to get 30%. The last time they did this I got a PS3.

They ran a deal like this presidents day weekend, but even crazier. It was 20% off one item and 15% off your total purchase if you get a new meijer card. They both stacked on top of the 10% that you get anytime you sign up.

So back when the 60GB PS3 was $599 I got the system and Resistance for $430 after tax. Which came out to $360 for the ps3 and $40 for the game. For a savings of $278 !

Unfortunately I still regret the purchase since I already own an xbox 360. Hopefully next year will change things around.

technically it isn't 30% off. Close but not quite.

*edit - damn! I missed the last one and was hoping for another chance soon, but I'm going to be out of town during this one. :(

oh, didn't realize that from the way the OP is worded.

but still, it doesn't seem worth the hit if someone were to use it once then ditch it.
In my opinion, an introductory 0% APR for X amount of months or years would be much better. you don't save money but you can pay a little at a time, while building your score. plus, you can "discount" the price on your own by flipping other games and putting the cash towards your purchase.

Well maybe I will get another PS3. lol. Two weeks ago I bought one and paid $376. Just sold that one for $450 to someone on Craigslist. So... I guess now I will pay 400+tax out the door minus my 75 dollar profit from the last one.

Alright, giggity giggity.

This deal is definately legit and I got my PS3 a couple weeks ago with it. Anyone looking for a big item from Meijer should go and hop on this.

i have to disagree on this one. the % off is way better unless you like to make payments on your CC's (which i don't). take the discount and pay it off when you get the bill. no debt, no possibility of incurring a late fee, etc. plus unless you're a better than average investor, theres no way you'd get that 20% off back over that short of a time span anyhow.

i've had a meijer cc for several years now and this is how i buy all my video game hardware and most of my console games.

You could do it in one payment, if you wanted (I'm assuming the point is the discount, not whether you have the cash or not.) Say you have 6 months to pay for your PS3, $500+tax. 0% APR might require you to pay a few bucks for something random, but nothing significant (and it's not interest, it'll go toward your balance.) The trick is in flipping games or whatever you are knowledgeable about enough to flip. Buy some games for cheap that you know you could make a lot of money on on ebay, put the sale price towards your card and you'll be doing better than 30% off in no time. But you have to have a keen eye for rare games and good stores around. I feel I could knock out half the price in one or two runs through the usual places around my hometown in IL (there are a ton of gamestores around.) I dunno, maybe this is all irrelevant and I'll just get bitched at for hoarding, even if its "educated" hoarding, haha :)

I think above all, make the new card the one you want to keep, so it's not just this ghost card on your credit report. This way, you're showing some dedication to the card, not just using it once then ditching it (which, iirc, doesn't reflect well on your credit record.) On top of that, you can actively "make" your PS3 a good deal, potentially a lot better than 30% off (like 60, 70, or if you get super lucky with finds, 80% off)

I don't mean to throw the thread off track, I just think people should take care before they start signing up for credit cards for instant gratification.

It's worth it to get the CC, especially if you buy your groceries at Meijer. Every $1 spent at Meijer earns you 1 reward point and when you get to 1000, they send you a gift certificate for $10. Dollars spent anywhere else earn 1/2 point per dollar.

I spend $500 every month in groceries alone so it makes good sense for me. they usually run 15% off general merchandise every other week with the cc, so I've found it a good way to get hardware, furnitire, toys, at a good discount on a regular basis.

Hey I am right there with you, I bought a PS3 two weeks ago, and made 75 bucks profit selling it on Craigslist.

As for the credit part you were talking about, it is so important for me to have this, I only had one other credit card like item (Visa Debit Check Card), so this was a great way for me to start building credit at 19 years old.

Another thing that many people don't realize is that when you just sign up for a credit card and get approved that is reflected in your credit score. Many people just think "Ahh, I just want the free gift!" not the best way to look at it, as it can hurt you in the long run.

I will end this now that I have wasted everyone's time.

I don't like having store credit cards even though I pay my 2 credit card bills in full every month. But what bmulligan said is the same reason why I signed up for the Meijer one. I'll actually be using the card for groceries now and during their Meijer CC sales. Well, and getting a 60GB PS3 for $360 + tax was the other reason. For signing up, I also got 3 coupons for 12-packs of soda and water and a rotisserie chicken.

On the other hand, I'm planning to get a new PSP with store credit at GC that I did get by flipping and trading in old games. I like to balance out my flipping workload with getting things via instant discounts or coupons. It just all depends on how much I want to wait and how much time I want to put into it.

Not a waste of time, and I was going to mention the same thing. Opening a new line of credit will affect your credit score negatively, even if it is just a Meijer credit card.

For someone in the 16-20 year-old range who only has one or no credit cards, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, as opening a line of credit as a means to establish a credit history is necessary.

But (for example, not me ;) ) a 30 year old that already has eight credit cards, a mortgage, a car payment, student loans, etc., a new credit card really isn't worth the 28% off a one-time purchase.

It's especially bad for someone who is looking to open a major line of credit soon, like a home loan or a car loan, as the amount of time since you last opened a line of credit is taken into consideration when you apply for those. If you've just applied for a Meijer credit card and then go to apply for a mortgage, your credit report will show that the average American opens a new line of credit every nine months (for example) and that you've opened one in the last two weeks, and will lower your score accordingly. While that may not seem like a big deal on the surface, it could be. For saving $200 on a PS3, you may have bumped up a possible mortage rate one or two tenths of a percent, which is a heck of a lot more than $200.

So yeah, think first.

Yea it's amazing when I hear people at big events like "Oh man I really want that watch they give you just for signing up." Good idea jacka**.

Are there any restrictions on getting a CC from them? Like I'm a full time student and I don't have a job. So would I still be approved to get a CC from them? Has anyone else without a job gotten a CC from Meijers without any problems?

Sorry for the triple post:

You can get the additional 10% along with th 20% on the same day/first purchase? Like, I grab a console and then signup for the card, and get the 30% right then and there?

Thanks

It actually ends up being 28% off, they will take 10 and then 20 off of the purchase.

Still worth it though, for those of you that are in Michigan you will be paying $381.59 out the door. Unless you add on one of the Meijer "REPAIR" Plans (which is kind of worthless).

To answer the previous questions...

Farley, unless you have had a previous job, or a credit card, I would say that it looks pretty grim that you would get approved.

RESMonkey they are like any other credit card, so I am not sure what exactly your question is. I got mine and it was free to apply, if that is what you mean.

That's how I got my 360 bundle for like $308 out the door a little over 3 months ago. :) Good luck getting a newer manufacture date! (Meijer doesn't exactly move consoles quickly)

Another thing to note is that they give you the option of getting 1 of 2 cards. One is their Meijer-only card and the other is a Visa card. At least those were the options given to me.

I've already got a Meijer CC....used it to buy a ping-pong table for 30% off and thought I got a deal....now I want PS3!!!

Anyone know if my wife can sign up for one? The card I signed up for is in my name only. But didn't know if they have restrictions on one card per address and couldn't fine it anywhere.
Hey I am right there with you, I bought a PS3 two weeks ago, and made 75 bucks profit selling it on eBay.
You are a terrible person. :p

Crap, I may not make it to Meijer until late since I gotta move. I hope they get Mega Man Starforce in, because I might buy it.

I'm on the line with Meijer right now. Doens't seem like they got the Xbox 360 PRICE DROP. The consoles are still full price.

WTF? They better have the Price drops by Friday...

Damnit! They have em for $399.99, but you CAN do a price comparison if you have a flyer/weekly ad of another store.

No stores have the $349.99 X360 in their current ads!

Help !

Okay, I talked to another Meijer. Guy said that I have to come in, do a price match by having them call Bestbuy or circuitcity, etc., then I use the CC and get it for the price I want.

They only have 1 console, though :(

Anyone else jumping on this?

Do they sell out of systems quickly when they run these deals? I really want a PS3 but my concern is they will be sold out by the time I get there on Friday.

Illinois - I called different Meijers in the Northwest Suburbs and they all have more Elites then premiums.

I PRAY TO GOD that SOMEHOW Meijer will have a Premium w/ HDMI.

One Meijer I went to today around 5:30 had two elites. I might go back in 45 minutes and pick one up. First on to another one to see if they have any PS3s or Wiis(unlikely on the latter) :(

Yes, I did this back in March or April to get my PS3, but I had to go to four local Meijer stores before I found one that hadn't already sold out of every console but the PS2. Pretty much every expensive console and Ipod have sold out by the end of the first day during these sales.

I need an Elite but I don't think any Meijer around me carries it. Does anyone know if Meijer caught up with the price drop yet?

Crap. I have been wanting to pull the trigger and get an Elite for some time now. I don't know if I should jump on this or wait until later in the year when the newer architecture hits the shelves.......what to do....what to do.... :whistle2:k

mvp828: What area have you been checking in Michigan. I wouldn't want to compete with you. ;)

I am an absolute freakin idiot... I go to my Meijer last night thinking that it started Thursday... dee dee dee.

The Bends, I am in the Grand Rapids area.

Also, for those of you that live in Michigan, if you let me know I may be able to pick one up for someone if you can't find one. The only thing is that I don't feel like having to send one, seeing as that would be a pain in the arse (unless you want to pay for shipping). But I go to school in Midland, so if you were interested in waiting two weeks, I could meet you somewhere if you live anywhere along I-96, 127, 131, or 46.

Meijer is open 24/7, but the deal usually begins at 6 AM. However, two weeks ago when they had the deal a manager gave me the deal when I checkout out at 12:15 AM. YMMV on the latter.
