2001: A Last Movie You Saw Odyssey

Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple

Pretty good film. Not as effective as some other Japanese works, but still pretty entertaining.

20 minutes into the future

the channel 4 movie that led to the max headroom series. interesting and holds up pretty good considering it's 20 years old and made for tv (that goes for the series too). definitely ahead of it's time, i would argue it's even ahead of our time now. shame the tv series was cancelled after only 14 episodes. guess that's what happens when you create a satire that criticizes media and corporations, the very same people in charge of programming tv schedules. definitely worth a view if you can find it, though certain things (music, clothes) are dated. the stories are what makes it worth revisiting.

The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)

Something great by the Coens to cleanse the ol' palette after the Ladykillers. I love the bravado that they brought to the picture and the obvious nods to the work of Hawks and Capra.

Great movie... It's a shame that studio execs (as this was the first Coen / big studio release) made the Coens cast Robbins as the main character, when it was written for Bruce Campbell.

Really? It was written for Bruce? Interesting...

His character was pretty good in the movie anyway. "C'mon, baby! Let's grab a highball!"

Yeah. The Coen Bros., the Raimi (Sam and Ted), Bruce Campbell and Frances McDormand were all friends when they first started getting into filmmaking.

The Coen Bros. wrote an early film that Sam Raimi directed, called "Crimewave" (or "The XYZ Murders" or "Broken Hearts and Noses"). That was a big studio release, too, I believe. Bruce Campbell had a role written for him, but the studio made them cast him as the heel of the film... appropriately named "The Heel".

As a joke, Bruce Campbell has been in Fargo and Intolerable Cruelty (two Coen movies) as "Soap opera actor on T.V.", on a television in the background. Making fun of how the studios dick him over.

Ya, one of the Coens was an editor on Evil Dead also.

Yup. I wish, for old times sake, they'd do another film together.

As for recent movies, I'm thinking about watching Narc next. Simply one of the greatest films ever, in my opinion.

Mulan (1998)

Surprisingly great, definitely one of the better films to come from Disney in the last decade. Very touching, as well.

Mulan(- Eddie Murphy) > Goodfellas.

I've been meaning to see Narc, but only because the girl who plays "Ellie" on Degrassi is in it.

Watch the Chinese version of Mulan. You get Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and a bunch of other kickass actors doing the voices. :)

Was Ming-Na still Mulan or did they get someone else?

I'm not sure. I'm guessing that it would be someone else.

EDIT: In case anyone's interested. Here's the song "Man Out of You" performed by the Chinese cast. Jackie is the main vocalist, but you can also hear Jet and the other Chinese actors in it. I like this version better than the American one:

Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys - ok flick, but those were some really fucking dumb and reckless things those kids did, and WTF is up with the Culkin clan? Did they have like 10 sons 4 years apart so there would always be one available to be a child actor in movies or something?

Shit, I forgot that I used to own that movie. Never watched it, but I let my sister borrow it. And her ex let a friend borrow it, and then it was lost to the ages.

She still owes me a replacement ... :whistle2:k

Densha Otoko (Train Man) the movie

Story of an anime obsessed otaku who stands up to a drunken train passenger harassing a pretty young woman (loosely known as a 'bijin). The woman thanks him for sticking up for her and he doesn't know what to do as he's never been socially close to any girl. He goes onto a message board and asks the members their advice.

Think of it as a combination of 40 Year Old Virgin with the 'Chronicles of Mr. Anderson's Lovelife' thread here at CAG.

Quite an interesting story but ultimately the ending is trite as it's a feel-good 1980s type ending so nothing surprises you. But, for what it is, it's a cute love story.

A Bittersweet Life

It was good but not a masterpiece like some people was calling it. The first hour was kinda slow and boring but when the second hour kicked in...the time flew by. I paid $30 shipped for the director's dts cut. The dvd comes with loads of extras that I only watched for a little bit so far. The only minus about this dvd is that the extras didn't come with subtitles. The dvd would have been so worth the $30 bucks if it was there.

My Wife is a Gangster

I enjoyed this movie

INCREDIBLE musical score, though. I've never seen the movie, but I knew that Joshua Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) co-composed it. "The Atomic Trinity", composed by him, is one of the most hard-hitting rock songs I've ever heard.

Escaflowne - I've watched this a few times and want to love it but it just never shows me anything to love. The main female character is annoying as fuck but Van was badass.
Star Wars Episode III - Very good, much better than the previous prequels and much darker. I can't wait to get the dvd.
Pi - I don't really know what to say about this movie. It was just...weird.

Being John Malkovich

Freakin' genius. One of the most brilliantly original movies I've seen in a long time; it's a wonderfully strange ride. My jaw hurts from smiling throughout the whole damn thing.
Domino

Kiera Knightly fans need to watch this. she is still hot even as a model turned bounty hunter.
I'm going to wait for the dvd.

I'm going to agree with you on Escaflowne. I kept hearing good things about it, but when I watched it, I was extremely disappointed.

Oh, and Pi kicks ass

The movie or the series? The movie was kinda lame but the series was and still is amazing IMO.

House of Wax. It wasn't as bad as everybody makes it out to be, but it is a massive Texas Chainsaw Massacre rip off. It's nothing like the original House of Wax either. The whole hillbillies + wilderness + screwed up families combination in these slasher flicks is getting old. Still a fun watch though, especially since we get to see Paris Hilton die a pretty cool death.
